Both are great machines. I have had the yxz for two years and it has been absolutely reliable. I love being able to drop down a gear and rip around turns. Its so exciting to drive. It never gets old.

I recently had the opportunity to compare the new Talon R vs. my 2017 YXZ SS with Packard SC. I Spent the day at Sand Hollow rock climbing and riding dunes. I swapped back and forth between both machines frequently. As an effort to even the playing field during the comparison the Packard Charged YXZ carried additional ~300-350lbs ( passenger & cargo) the stock Talon R had 180-220lb single driver (no passenger no cargo).
    Results as follows:
Drag racing (sand): Talon has the edge due to torque advantage and traction, although the YXZ always runs Talon down especially if the YXZ is initially launched from high rpms.
    Drag racing (gravel/ hardpack):
Talon gets the jump everytime.. The Talons tires are surprisingly good as compared to brand new 28x10 terramasters installed on the YXZ, again the YXZ overtakes the talon mid third gear but the Talon is surprisingly quick and consistent out of the hole.
    Sand dunes (steep hill climbs):
Talon climbs dunes with ease, torque + wider rear tires, Talon edges out the YXZ & the Talons transmission keeps the engine in the heart of the torque curve and to our surprise climbed right up the "infamous" backside of the dunes fairly easy.
    Rock Climbing:
Despite not having the ability to see the front tires over the hood the Talon easily wins this comparison, the Talons motor has plenty of torque on tap, engine braking in low range is superior to the YXZ even in high range the Talons torque made obstacles easy. The Talon simply outperformed the YXZ in every single rock climbing scenerio.
High/ low speed Rocky trail riding:
YXZ wins this comparison due to better suspension less body roll and precise steering. (YXZ equipped with base Fox RC2s)
Jumps & high speed sending it:
I'm calling this a draw.. Talon performed slightly better on the big steep faced jumps (multiple nose dives & frequent bottoming out experienced on both machines) The Talon R has more travel than the YXZ therefore bottoming out in the Talon was a bit less harsh in full firm shock settings ,, but the YXZ suspension/ springs were set for trail riding ---pre load was not dialed in for big jumps.
    Overall engine & Transmission/ performance:
The talon wins this comparison, the engine & transmission+ power delivery is more refined than the YXZ, the Talon simply outperformed the YXZ in this segment, the engine consistently and predictively pulls hard..especially in sport mode, plus you can select auto regular mode and lug the engine if you into that sort of thing..
    Chassis & Suspension:
The YXZ is more planted below 60mph but the Talons steering is less twitchy at higher speeds on smoother gravel roads. The YXZ chassis feels more rigid but somehow more connected & comfortable.
    Fit & finish:
Regardless of the Honda quality hype,,, the YXZ is built better, fasteners/hardware & build quality IMO Yamaha is the better built machine. During the comparison the Talons odometer was 300 miles basically brand new machine vs the YXZ's 2000+ miles. The older higher mileage YXZ chassis is still tight with minimal rattles/ squeeks and no clunky noises. The Talons doors constantly rattle even after full adjustment there was a intermittent loud clunky noise somewhere near the front diff especially noticeable when rock climbing. I'm the real rough stuff the Talons chassis sometimes feels loose & disconnected --similar to AC products--🧐, in addition, the Talons center mount digital screen is plain cheap outdated junk..
Regardless at the end of the day I feel the Talon is a great machine, would be excellent with chassis/suspension & display refinements. The YXZ is decent chassis with an outdated transmission and engine but is fun to drive ,, that fun somehow never gets old..
If I was to purchase a new machine today I would lean towards the Talon X as the motor and transmission is at this moment far ahead of YXZ..😁

Your kinda all over the place but I respect your comment. The YXZ is a proven machine and very well built. So fun to drive. My opinion is it blows the Talon away. It’s amazing how good the YXZ feels just to sit in. The transmission is awesome and so is the 11k rpm engine...But there are a lot of haters out there...

    • @jasonholt2741

@@DUNEATV Yes there is always haters.. I'm not one of them though. I've owned too many Yamaha ATV'S, Motorcycles, & SXS's and they've all been reliable "good units". I can't say that about the Polaris & Arctic cats I've previously owned. That being said I'm not loyal to any brand ( although my garage is full of Yamahas) my comments are totally unbiased and based on a full day of first hand testing & comparing both machines in my riding area. Neither machine is anywhere close to perfect, Fact is all of the UTV manufacturing companies have certain shortcomings e.g. drilling extra drainage holes in our YXZ skid plates to protect our frames from corrosion 😄...
IMO Honda has surpassed Yamaha in a few key areas The YXZ doesn't blow the Talon out of the water in anything other than instrumentation & suspension. I'm not sure how reliable the Talon Engine and transmission will be.
Watch my other Talon vs YXZ videos..
At the end of the day, competition between manufactures will only benefit the consumer. In other words, Yamaha will have to continue to improve the YXZ lineup, hopefully the next gen YXZ will be offered in a WR model?? 6speed with Low range transmission and perhaps better roll cage than the current 2019 model.

I have the 2019 YXZ SS SE, it is much improved over the older YXZ's, I can compare because I put 9000 miles on a 2016 YXZ SE. This video is a good comparison of the facts between the 2019 YXZ SS SE and the Talon. I now have 2600 miles on my 2019 YXZ, and would not trade it for any SXS in stock form. It is very comfortable to drive, fast, you can paddle shift with your little finger, and it downshifts automatically if you want to. The triple cylinder engine is very smooth, and the fun factor is off the charts!

I love my Honda Talon. I have also a Polaris General but as far as experiencing the two, I chose Honda, in fact I will trade the General to a Pioneer 1000 as my utilitarian as soon as I pay off the Polaris. Nothing wrong with General but I’m no mechanic, I don’t know how to replace the belt if I break it! I have peace of mind when driving geared transmission!

I just sold my 2017 Pioneer 1000-5 to get a 2021 Talon 1000x. I couldn't be any happier with getting Talon. It's a beast of a machine so far. Now as I've researched ive came to realize the Can Am X3 is a true beast of a machine but the belt drive is something I don't want to have to deal with either. Having the Talon makes me feel more at ease when I'm by myself or just me and a passenger while out in these mountains here in Southern coalfields of West Virginia where the terrain is pretty rough and tough. Now the Talon may not be able to get through some of the crazy stuff the X3 can but overall it's got what it takes to get you in and out of some really tough spots. Hell add a winch to anything and you'll never have to worry much anyhow. Lol. But that shaft drive is real amazing to have, plus add in the i4x4 and it makes this machine well worth it. To be honest I wish it did have more reach with the suspension but I would say in the future Honda will make this machine even more competitive with the Can Am as time goes. I think the X3 has like 21 inches while the Talon 1000x has 14 inches and the 1000R has like 17 inches. I think Honda will boost that up as time comes. I honestly can't wait to see what Honda has in store for the Talon in the future. I already know I'm going to stay with the Talon as they progress cause I already know that Honda will make it better and better. And we all already know what Honda has to offer overall throughout the years. Honda has always been a good machine regardless of what it is.
Side note: You can't go wrong with a Pioneer. Now if you're looking for a machine for the trails, it's not it. Although it can perform but not like the sport UTV's. It's a workhorse to do work with more than anything. It's the reason I sold mine cause it just wouldn't keep up with everyone I was riding with cause the suspension just ain't got what it takes. Just wanted to throw that out there in case you thought it would be good for the trails. Which it'll take you places but it won't perform in rough and rugged terrain like the Talon can. The General is by far better for it than the Pioneer.

Chris Baumgarten Yamaha’s “low range” is first gear, and sure a clutch can be weak, but that’s replaceable. All Talon Models have Paddle Shifters. The beauty of the machine is that you can use them, or not, and let the machine shift for you. You don't have that luxury in the YXZ. In our testing, the paddles are basically the same in both machines when used. However, since the Talon is a 6 speed (Yam 5), you are shifting more often. That's probably why most Honda drivers including us like to let the computer do the shifting which it does very well..

How do they compare climbing hills/rocks, how much clutch slippage, jerkyness, and how much difference does low range in the talon make? Is it better than the Yamaha in 4-low? I'm really interested in the question: Does low range give the Talon a practical edge over the Yammie?

Gotta hit stuff with some speed. Dedicated low range probably works, but 1st gear is hard to beat when you've got diff locks, a 10k redline, and launch control 😆

I own yxz and don’t see myself sitting into anything else anytime soon . Its fun fun fun machine and it doesn’t break. Stats and all the other bs doesn’t matter. Yxz is built right. My other friends have over 200hp cvt machines with 32” tires, long travel.. and all bs that sounds good on the paper, but in the real world they cant keep up on trails and dunes. Yxz makes me better driver. Its predictable and easy to maneuver. Soo whoever reads this please ignore these hate comments. I think Yamaha has addressed some of the problems with the newer models. They lowered the gearing so you have more low end torque. The trade off is a lower top end speed, which would probably make them even less desirable in the dunes where speed is what you want. In the end, they're all remarkable machines and people ride what they like. Think back about 10 years, all you had then was the Rzr 800s if you wanted a fast, sporty utv. All the manufacturers have come a long way since then. Kawasaki just introduced the KRX 1000 this year too so another competitor has entered the mix. I have a friend who just bought one and he really likes it.

And it was lacking then compared to everyone else. The Talon looks like a nice machine. I like that it gives you the option of full auto or paddle shifters. I wish they made a 50" model. A lot of people ride in places with tight trails and many trail systems are restricted to 50". The smaller machines are easier to store and fit on a trailer too.
