    If the premise of your video is how to professionally paint a motorcycle with a can, perhaps it would have been instructive to actually show the painting with a can.

      Yes, the problem is that over spray kills my camera lenses. I can afford to buy a new o e every time I want to film painting a part. If you are willing to lend me your camera for that purpose I'd be more than happy to film the whole process.

    budget doesn't always mean rattle cans, I have found that rattle cans are actually more expensive than buying paint by the quart and spraying with a gun. For that same amount of money you can buy paint by the quarts and spray more than one project with it, Sand paper and masking tape are your actual biggest expenses!

    Thanks Mackie. More or less what I want to do with my Bandit tank. There might be two problems though. The bike is an import so it's not a UK colour but Hammerite smooth dark green is a match. Can I use the same method? Do you think it will take a clearcoat as I want to put a small line painting on it

    I'm glad you made this video, very interesting. I have a two tone red and white paint scheme to attempt on my tank, it just has a light coat of grey primer on bare metal at the moment. What primer would you use for that, would grey primer be okay? The paint manufacturer recommends red primer for the red and white primer for the white, obviously I would rather just use one colour primer.

    • @MackieBass
      @MackieBass  6 років тому +1

      Hey Brian, i'd stick with grey primer - it's a good neutral base and goes well with any colour really. It also covers anything nicely, way better than the white stuff. Good luck with it!

      Its not a good idea to just fill dents with filler. Your best bet is to borrow or rent a stud gun and weld some studs in the dent and use a slide hammer to pull as much of the dent as possible. Then you apply a nice thin coat of filler. That is how the professionals do it.

    Great looking job Mackie. A couple additional tips for those wanting to do this 1.) Be careful to ensure the primer, guide coat, and top coat are compatible. You can't for instance use a lacquer top coat over an alkyd resin (enamel) guide coat. The lacquer may bubble the guide coat in that case. 2.) There are 2-pack rattle cans available. They have two compartments. Press a button on the can and the catalyst mixes with the paint. The can then has a pot life.

      @MackieBass  6 років тому +1

      well the top layer came off easy (previous owner didnt lacquer top coat, so it run when petrol touched it) i now have the underneath colou showing awaiting the wet and dry, 600 grit. I often use duplicolor touch up paints as secondary colour. It's ... convenient, and quiet in not requiring the compressor. Once under clear coat it's all the same. More vids on striping please mate.@@MackieBass

    Mackie, my tank is going to be re-sprayed soon and I have sanded the top 'shine' colour off and the colour beneath is now a dull matte colour. In theory could i just spray right onto that, rather than go back to bare metal?

    The best clear coat that you can use is the "OH MY" 2k clear from BuyCustomPaint.com . Easy to spray, no cutting or buffing required and the half paint kits are $30... if you watch the last 5 mins of this video ua-cam.com/video/XwBl53nql4I/v-deo.html you will see how great this clear is... its definitely worth checking out...

    • @MackieBass
      @MackieBass  6 років тому +1

      Yes, different kind of paint most likely...or the underlayer wasn't cured enough - patience is the key here. If you're not in any rush leave the paint to cure of a few days if unsure. I've done the same mistake again - heartbreaking.

  • @davemurphy2020

    Good job. But....In a year or less depending on usage Jean abrasion, bug and road splinter abrasion, and petrol spillage will make it old all too soon. Rattle can paint seems too soft to last. I guess you get what you pay for in terms of durability. Shame really as the prep is the same for all paints to get the desired finish.

    • @MackieBass
      @MackieBass  6 років тому

      That's true Dave, but not everybody got access or the money to do it profesionaly. This way if one wnats to "fix" their paintjob themselves...they can do it on the cheap. It doesn't take much to make their first bike looking so much better. This is really aimed for the younger riders really. DIY and all that :)
