In my most humble opinion, the most beautiful boat yet, if she was a lady we would be talking Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffanys, classy, chic, heart pumping beauty. What a bargain, if only i lived State side my money would be on the table in a flash. Hats off to you gentlemen.

I could get Talked into this...
    A few ideas for grading...
    1) can it be a live-aboard
    2) can it sail with only one person
    3) Dryness while underway...
Basically,,, is it a cruiser, or
just for putsing around a bay to say you went sailing in a bar!!!
Oh I guess #4) would you sail it to the Caribbean...

@@YachtHunters No, a friends father was a doctor. The doctor previously owned a Tartan Back Watch 37 and went on to buy a new Mariner 40. I was a racing sailor primarily but the Mariner 40 opened my eyes to what a real sea going vessel was and the contrast was great. This was in Ashtabula, Ohio, on Lake Erie. When it was fresh, under jib and jigger on the M40, it was like nothing was going on. Trimmed properly for point of sail, between a close and broad reach, the boat tracked beautifully without touching the helm. The comfort at seas rating is around 48, among the highest for a 40’ vessel. To my mind, comfort at sea is very important and worth sacrificing some daily logged miles. in the 80s, the contrast between boats like Tartan’s, C&C’s, Erickson’s, etc, etc, in a given condition was great. The difference was between boats and a vessel that felt like a ship. So for living aboard and voyaging, with her spacious accommodations and sea keeping ability, a well found M40 is hard to beat.

Bravo for doing this astounding beauty! Those boats (the multitude of designs based on that hull) were overlooked for decades and could be bought for dirt cheap. This is probably the finest example I have seen in quite a few years. They are slow but comfortable and extremely safe as well as full of classic beauty. The quintessential blue water cruiser. The ketch rig no longer gets the love it deserves but it makes sailing easier for those who are up in years and allows for a comfortable and balanced sail plan to accommodate any conditions. I am surprised at the price, being a Japanese built version in incredible shape she should be going for a lot more than that. The drone shot at 14:00 of casually running jib and jigger should be enough to sell this boat fast, such a beauty. If I was ready this would be a contender boat. I admit to being gobsmacked by this one, but I have a long term love with that design. Good job Cap'n and Randy, you found an astounding boat for us this week. I bet this sells quickly thanks to this video.

Still Dirt Cheap when one sees they way it was preserved and maintained was, all that Good Stuff, seems to have been done what with the Decks sorted with Fibreglassing that alone today would be serious serious money... A good Survey and then one could see from same what you're looking at, but looking the upload it seems a sound very loved seagoing Craft. and that beamy design would keep you safe in a disturbed following Sea... Great Upload Captain 'Q'...

" There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbor. Tomorrow for old England she sails. Far away from your land of endless sunshine. To my land full of rainy skies and gales." Roger Whittaker. This small ship reminds me of that song. A very romantic yesteryear appeal about her and the price as well. " For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly, more dearly than the spoken word can tell." That is the feeling I get when I look at her.

The layout speaks of a whole different approach to sailing to the modern equivalent size boat. Personally I love it, the communal feel to the sailing experience. As a non-sailing watcher of many types of boat reviews, from liveaboard power, to these type of classic yachts, I seriously benefit in knowledge from this channel, the history of the boats and the clear explaination of the various rigging styles has finally penetrated my thick skull. An amazing raconteur.

As a boat owner I can say they are about 10k USD in fees and repairs every year (minimum). After a few years of trying to sell, you get so you almost want to go out and sink the thing to stop the bleed.edit: all the brightwork and teak deck and wood frame is the stuff of nightmares. Boats are the like the epitome of depreciation...

This was fantastic to watch and a great example of a Bill Garden designed boat. I live on and sail a 1973 Seawolf Hunter and it is a tank and yet graceful. A good balance. And the amount of teak and old world charm in these boats make them cozy. It's a shame so many of them don't get the love and attention they deserve.

I just saw this one, what a great boat. I could see myself living on that boat 12 months of the year down here in the SE US. I really like that you were able to incorporate views of the boat under sail, showing both mizzen and genoa sails up. Wouldn't it be fun to invite buyers to make a video 6 months to a year after their purchase to further the experience for those of us who will not likely be fortunate enough to enjoy such a life. I could imagine an easier way for us older folks to climb into that fore peak birth. Thanks again to you and Randay for bringing me closer to the experience. Looking forward to your next one.

I had use of two of these boats, the Garden 35 and Mariner 35 both wood hulls. The only difference was the owner of the company William Garden sold the company to Clare Oberly between the build of the two boats. 1964 &1965 great boats. They had, as most of his boats spruce masts (keel stepped main). They were great sailors, the first was sailed in races in the pacific northwest and won many first in class. The 35 has the same layout as the 40 and is a dry sailing boat the flare of the bow keeps the spray and splash of the deck and unless you get a wind spray or slide slap of the water you will seldom get wet. In the 60's most of the bright work was done in Honduras mahogany not teak and the cabinetry was top class. I would love to have one again! There is a 36 foot build of this and it is also a good boat. The original Sea Wolf used the 40 foot hull and built more of a cruising design.

You are a gem Capt.Q! Not sailor here, but it seems like these boats incredible bargains from my point of view. Thanks!
