This is a meeting of two of the very best channels in the sailing world. You guys are very reliable in telling a extraordinary story in a totally natural way. Without the unnecessary “constructed action” as others, only the naked truth of your own personal experience.
Well, this was one of the more unusual but very entertaining solo sailing videos that I seen. But the one thing that really hit home, Christian, was your little speech about consciousness and it not being any different at 17 or 78. You see I’m 70 and there are many times that I feel no where near that age. The only thing that brings me back to “reality” is when I see myself in a mirror. You put it into words perfectly, that feeling of self that, at least to me and you, is somewhat ageless.
Thank you Christian for sail and Bob for this comment. This really hits home with me even at the ripe old age of 39. I still feel like I'm 18 until i look in the mirror too. Christian "That's the secret, who'ever you are now, is who you'll be when you're my age. You are yourself, we all are, and the only job we have is to be it". I cannot like this more, thank you sir!
I've got the same mirror at 67. I remember still working past 65 when it suddenly hit me that I was actually old and worked alongside people 50 years younger than me. I did not feel it but they could see it.
Man, I have a lot of respect and admiration for this man. To make these long voyages at 78 years old by himself is unbelievable. It takes a lot of experience and knowledge obviously, but I think most importantly, a huge pair of balls. Dude is a straight up badass!
As a mere 67 year-old I am impressed at your 11 year advantage in knowledge, experience and all the rest. When the topic of age arises I always think of my paternal Grandmother who was born in 1897. In 1997 we had a party to celebrate her century, and during the evening I asked her how it felt to be 100 years old. Her answer will stay with me for the rest of my life. She said, "It's just like being 20 - but your knees don't work the same!" She left us about a year later. 🙂
Your inspiration led me to act on a dream. I’ve just purchased my Royal Enfield Himalayan motorcycle. Next year is for planning and learning. 2023 is a cross country ride via backroads and small towns. Call it my own version of Blue Highways ala William Least Heat-Moon. Thank you.
I have learned one good lesson. "The art of single-handed sailing is mastery of reducing the decisions one must make under pressure". Thanks for the master class.
After many months of watching and curating YT sailing videos, I have found my biggest hero! I'm 57 and you, Mr. Williams, have just proven that I can ignore any clock ticking thoughts. Super video. Thanks for posting!
I am now 40 and as an act of mid life crisis or just good old fashioned melancholy, i have decided to take some courses in sailing and get out there. I started watching your video and your quick refrain of contemplation about life and age and lustras is one of the most inspiring things. I showed it to my sister who has been aware of my recent interests and unironically told her that you are who I want to be when I grow up. Thank you, sincerely.
@@King-Lewoff topic but I was in the army at fort Stewart in hinesville ga. From Washington state. I went to a falcons game in Atlanta and stopped by a gas station in some meh neighborhood. There was a nice Aston Martin parked out front and a very pretty woman opened the driver door for a probly 70 year old dude dressed like a pimp from a movie. He walked inside and as I’m looking at drinks he points a gun at the cashier and is just casually talking to him about something then calmly walks out. I don’t think he robbed the guy I paid for my stuff and the cashier seemed like nothing happened. Was one of the strangest things I’ve ever seen
Sir, your channel came on whilst I was chatting with a friend on messenger…..at first I thought what’s a silly old bugger doing single-handedly sailing a boat, but then I got in the groove, the music, the pot drums, the odes, philosophy, game night quizzes, the reflections and you know sir, I was thoroughly and utterly entertained and it was probably the most enjoyable hour and a bit I have had in a long time, single-handedly watching your adventures. Thank you so much from Aussie
This is great I am actually considering selling my Corvette for a sailboat ⛵! I used to yawn when people would start talking about a sailboat. Thanks for making these.
This is what its all about folks... intelligence, adventure, fun, problem solving, music and more fun! I feel as though I could hang out this man for days and never tire of his company!
We have a saying in Sweden that goes "den som väntar på något gott väntar aldrig för länge". He who waits for something good never waits too long is the meaning of the text. This wait was worth it!
Great to see someone actually enjoy the sailing. So many younger seafarers are worrying about all sorts of things that can and do go wrong with their boat whilst at sea. I worry for them even! You though, enjoy some good music a glass of wine a good book and leave the boat alone! Thanks for sharing your vid, I enjoyed it.
I really wish that there were more sailing channels like this. More sailing, less "travel vlog". Don't get me wrong, I definitely love so many of the sailing channels that are far more "travel vlog", but this kind of "real" is nice.
Probably the most personal and honest sailing vid I ever seen. 🏆 This is just the way I love it. The rough parts, the lonesome parts, the going nuts parts, the sunny part with no wind and the fear of reaching your destination.
Despite being thoroughly marinated in UA-cam sailing content, this is my favorite sailing video ever, bar none. Thank you, Christian. I laughed, I marveled, I even got something in my eye. This was brilliant, funny, entertaining, beautiful, and deeply moving.
My wife and I prepared a meal while watching your video, ate the meal, had a glass of wine, and watched the rest of it, all in one sitting. It was spellbinding. You are truly inspirational, and your video is the best movie we have seen all year. Thank you so much for sharing your adventure with us.
Man these are awesome, i'm 23 and did north America in a Van and thinking about sea travel now. You really capture it all aspects but most importantly the spirit! Inspiring, old man - you're who inspires and models their role, keep on rockin'!.

Thankyou for taking us along on your grand adventure! as a Dad who works 45hrs a week and has a backyard farm I truly appreciate the time it took to do this😁
You are an amazing man Christian. I’ve seen all of your crossings to Hawaii and have enjoyed them very much. I cannot believe you are 78. Wonderful. Keep going strong as you are.
This is brilliant! Hilarious! Christian is boss! I'm from UK. But this jazz loving, philosophical, hilarious, nautical wizard and expert film maker is surely a US National treasure! Get him a TV show of his own 👍😍
Christian, of your three crossings, this was my favorite! Great adventure. Loved the music and video as you approached the islands. Enjoyed the banter and philosophical satirical conversations with yourself. The attention to detail you have with every inch of the boat and the regular checks was a learning for me- never assume all is well- proactively identify problems, address them or fix the unexpected issues that ALWAYS come up. I thought your previous crossing would be your last. So glad that you were able to make another. Thanks for the lessons in life, how to be a better sailor, for good laughs, and living out my dreams of sailing to Hawaii.
One of the most down to earth inspiring videos I have ever watched... I'm only 62 and looking forward to my next chapter in my life on the open seas... ....
What an amazing gentleman. A real sailor, living life to its full. Inspiring to see such a trip single handed, brave and a certain confidence in achieving your goal. I’m 57 and have started sailing and i hope some day to experience an adventure like yours. You have inspired me. Respect and thank you..
Definitely the most entertaining the most entertaining sailing video on youtube. I also enjoyed the insights of a very intelligent man. Thanks for taking us along with you !!
Absolutely loved this video. You're an amazing 78 year old who lives life to the fullest. Good for you! I've been waiting for this video since knowing you had completed this voyage a month or so ago....it was wonderful seeing it announced. Thank you!
This is an excellent movie, I say movie as this is much more than a video. You did a fantastic job at filming, editing and realizing this movie. I appreciated your lesson as I am about to set sail solo myself at 66 years old. I enjoyed every minute, all fell into place at the right time, at the right place. Congratulations. Richard
I just found your channel Christian. Love it. I solo sailed in the Wake of Slocum right up to the coast of Brazil where I ran out of $. Your videos are bringing back memories and a thought or two of doing it again. At 74 I still have time.
I am a sailor who had to sell his love, a Cal 2-27, three years ago when unremitting back pain kept me from walking. Since I could not walk on the moving dock to get aboard my boat, I had to give her up. I am hopeful that someday I will be able to walk, and then I will look for a new boat to sail. Since I have enjoyed your exploits on your Erickson 32’, and then your Erickson 38’, I really like the Erickson brand. I used to lust after a Catalina 30’ but now your sails on the Erickson has changed my mind. Actually I really want to thank you for your U-Tube shows, especially the solo sailing to and from Hawaii. Please keep on sailing and making U-tube video’s for your fans to watch. Watching you really helps me until I can get a new boat to work on and sail. Again, THANK YOU!!! From Larry in Oakley, California.
Thank you so much for taking me to Hawaii again. I thought my wife was the only person who had conversations with herself. You're great and I love to sail with you. Also in my '70s and love your choices of music. I only get to sail the Chesapeake Bay, but every day on the water is treasured.
My wife and I found this last night and said, looks interesting but now way would we watch the entire 90 minutes! However, we so enjoyed the video we couldn't believe when it was over! We are somewhat new to sailing, just bought our first cruiser this year and found this not only entertaining, but inspirational and learned a lot in the process. Thanks Christian for the video and making your adventures available!
God, the last words you said ring true to me at 47, I have lived a lot in my time, more then most, and Ive noticed this very same thing. I am myself as I was, more matured, more in control, more thoughtful of my decisions, but the same. Thank you for such wise words!
Serious question... How do you know that you've lived "more than most"? The sheer arrogance of such a remark is a little disturbing to me. Is it not enough (for you) to be who you are without contrasting, comparing or judging how that ranks among most of humanity? Geeshe!
Christian, I have your 3 trips to Hawaii and back tucked into my favorites folder so that I can replay them in sequence which I do several times a year. I was once a sailor and did some single-handed stuff in my Cal 25. But now I'm 78 and my health is such that I must enjoy what other sailors have accomplished. There are many sailing videos on UA-cam and I have watched many. None are in my favorites folder but yours. Thank you for allowing me to sail along with you. Blessings, David
Please keep living on the edge of the horizon, sharing those adventures, deep thoughts and inspirations. You have been a inspiration to me during tones of personal struggle. Thank you sir.
The transition from his mundane update to the segment of his arrival at Hawaii: the sheer majesty of the rolling ocean and the beauty of terra firma, set to Thomas Newman's music. I am moved to tears.
"Christian Williams (born July 9, 1943) is an American journalist, television writer, and yachtsman. I'm 53 and just getting into sailing. Christian, you're my hero--I've watched your other two passages and started on this one. It means I have a minimum of 25 years left of sailing. Thanks!
Thanks for letting me crew again. This is the fourth trip I’ve ‘taken’ with Thelonius. They cheer my day and lower my BP. I’ve many voyages under my keel, but none solo yet.
Sailing in the ocean has been one of my oldest dream. I am 47years old this year and will be taking the first sailing lessons in Florida next month. You have inspired me so much in so many ways. I really appreciate it. What a beautiful journey!
Brilliant as always! It’s not everyone I can watch for nearly an hour and a half. You’ve got nearly two decades on me and are a true inspiration that age itself is not a limiting fact. Fair winds, friend.
Christian, what a pleasure, an inspiration and a joy! Beautifully produced. I have a smile on my face. Thank you very much for that. All the best! Andy
Christian is such wonderful example of how the sailing community is just as devoted to teaching our collecton of seamanship skills to everyone we can as we are devoted to enjoying t sailing. Christian leads by example in his videos wirh harness use and constant attention to safety while also showing how its not hard to be safe and incorporating into every aspect of sailing only makes the sport more enjoyable by reducing risk. I hope he knows his work has helped a whole lot of people find a great new passion for sailing.
Well I have been connected to oceans in one way to another, sailing is one of my passion, but, for an unknown reason, solo sailing is for me, the most intense and romantic connection that a sailor could have. Excellent video, comments, music and footage are 5/5. Buena Proa Christian
..."You know you got to be careful of dead bees if you're goin' around barefoot, 'cause if you step on them they can sting you just as bad as if they was alive, especially if they was kind of mad when they got killed. I bet I been bit a hundred times that way." Walter Brennan was great. Thanks for the memory and sharing your latest adventure. You are truly an inspiration.
A dead bee never stings anything but a protruding stinger on a dead bee can pierce bare skin and be painful. Dead things don't attack. There's no such thing as zombies.
I’ve gone down a UA-cam sailing video rabbit hole lately, I’m ashamed to admit I had no idea who you were. I thought crazy old dude sailing solo to Hawaii would be an interesting video to watch. I instantly became enamored with this “fearless, possibly crazy, sometimes a little drunk, pipe smoking, has his own version of solo jeopardy show, wish he was my uncle sailor”. At the end of this video I thought this is one bad azz old man who can be an inspiration to everyone who thinks they can’t or their too old. Then I googled you. Dude, you’re a fu*#ing legend. Thank you for sharing a month in your life with me.
Dear Christian! What an amazing adventure! You are my inspiration to live longer!! :) I'm 50 and a sailor, but man, I love your taste in music and general approach to life and sailing :) God bless! P.S. Keep writing. Truly enjoyed "Rarotonga".
Hi Christian, I loved your video, one of the best I ever watched about sailing single handled. One can see you are alive when of shore! Big respect for the performance and thank you again for sharing your experience and phylosophy. Keep going youngster!!
Having watched this I have so many feelings going through me right now. Happy that I've been allowed to share this with Mr Williams and sad that this voyage has ended
Love your videos. My boat partner and I did the San Diego to Maui sail on our Columbia 26 MK2 in 1979 (no GPS then...Sextant, HO229, nautical almanac and reasonably accurate digital watch). 19 days consisting of 33% boring, 33% spiritual, and 33% absolutely MFking terrifying. I'm 65 now and sail a Corsair F27 out of Oceanside...Thinking it is time to sail southwest again. Thanks for the inspiration. Captn Bob
Mr. Williams.... I must say thank you SIR... I'm 47 and am a single hander living in italy on my 33' comet sailboat... I have sailed around corsica and sardegna and soon I know i will be sailing around the world.... At 50 60 and into my 70s... Your words will stay with me forever. The window of the world through these eyes shall forever be exactly the same... Nothing has changed.... consciousness unaltered by time... and still strong like bull... Frikin awesome.
There is no other way to put it you are a bad ass!! I’m 40 and can only hope to be able to do this in my mid 70’s . Than you have the fortitude to record everything!!! Amazing
Thanks for posting your latest sailing adventure. I’m #o happy to see you haven’t bought into the “take it easy” part of growing older with only your fading memories of past excursions as you recline in an easy chair. The reasons we do long distance sailing are many and varied. Each person must do some serious self examination like are we up to the task? I love how you describe doing a typical repair with only a few spare parts and tools, but mainly with experience and ingenuity. You need an eye bolt? You scavenge one from some other place on the boat. Ciao and namaste
Coffee and Oreos. You remind me of my dad who is very salty and when everyone else is seasick to the point of debilitation can be found at the helm grinning, holding a Heineken with Fig Newtons falling out of his pockets. I have got to make jerry can holders like yours. Very tidy ship sir. Those big visible chain plates in the cabin are very reassuring.
I have seen this video numerous times. I enjoy it because it’s simple. But why I keep coming back to seeing it again is because it brings me joy the part you talk about age. I turn 60 in a couple of days, it feels good to age. Thank you.
I think any sleep-deprived solo sailor could easily identify with those philosophical ramblings mid-ocean. ;-) Godspeed as you proceed underway to 79.

I am 50 years of age after watching you in action I feel very inspired to keep marching on awesome 😎 thanks 🙏
Geeshe!
That was a very enjoyable 1+ hour of watching! Greetings from a Dutchman in Japan.
This is just wonderful. I'm sailing single handed as well. You cought the spirit. But your humour takes the unbearable pathos out of it. Simply great.
"Christian Williams (born July 9, 1943) is an American journalist, television writer, and yachtsman. A former editor of The Washington Post during the Watergate era, he later created two television dramas and is the author of four books..." Just the first paragraph from en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Williams
80 mins of pure joy
I'm 53 and just getting into sailing. Christian, you're my hero--I've watched your other two passages and started on this one. It means I have a minimum of 25 years left of sailing. Thanks!
I'm 51 and just getting into sailing too. How I ignored this pastime so long is beyond me.
Thanks Christian for this fascinating video. I marvel at how a single person would undertake the challenge of sailing across an ocean. Well done!
I'm now on my second trip through this great tale, and it's even better this time around. Just brilliant!
Me too🕊
Dalida in a christian williams video…it just keeps getting better😮
Thanks for letting me crew again. This is the fourth trip I’ve ‘taken’ with Thelonius. They cheer my day and lower my BP. I’ve many voyages under my keel, but none solo yet.
Sailing in the ocean has been one of my oldest dream. I am 47years old this year and will be taking the first sailing lessons in Florida next month. You have inspired me so much in so many ways. I really appreciate it. What a beautiful journey!
Good, try "Introduction to Sailing": ua-cam.com/video/tw_A6xA6fH8/v-deo.html&t
Go for it !!! Enjoy be safe.
Andy
I've watched several of these videos so far of singlehanded sails across the pacific and Atlantic. This guy did it in class and style! Love it
Christian is such wonderful example of how the sailing community is just as devoted to teaching our collecton of seamanship skills to everyone we can as we are devoted to enjoying t sailing.
I just love watching Chris’s sailing adventures. Such an amazing sailor and story teller. Wishing you all the best Chris!!

Bill, you got the reference too! Thought I must be one of the few. To Have and To Have Not. Best movie ever.
I am Jacob Bacca's granddaughter you are a joy and inspiration to watch! He would be tickled to watch your channel.
Love your videos and adventures! This was wonderful to watch! Thanks for bringing us along 🙏
I love watching you sing and sail! I long to be sailing and since I’m not, thank you for sharing your adventures. Amazing! 🥰
Loving every minute of this. Please continue to spread such fantastic, inspiring content over the internet. Thanks!!
There is no other way to put it you are a bad ass!! I’m 40 and can only hope to be able to do this in my mid 70’s . Than you have the fortitude to record everything!!! Amazing
I could watch this forever. Solo long distance sailing is the best catalyst for philosophical contemplation.
Thanks Christian.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your other videos but this by far is my favorite. Thank you for such great storytelling and inspiration. Expertly done, Sir!
Thank you.
Not the youngest, but still athletic and self-sufficient at sea. Awesome! Many more exciting years to you!
