I lived in TN and LOVED everything about it. Awesome song and awesome Photos. Never had the guts to try the moonshine, cops set up roadblocks everywhere looking for drugs and drunk drivers. Made us pour out our beers and let us go.

Probably one of the greatest songs ever written. It's a good one to listen to while doing 90 through the backwoods in a beat up chevy. Much love from the south Georgia bayou.

I had to move out of the hills for work, since they done the war on coal and lost my job, and miss it every day. But the one good thing that came from it is my kids and I married a Filipino, so I call my kids Fil-billies

I am a old man and have been all over and have seen most things of interest but before I pass on I still would like to drink one drink of some real "shine". Everyone seems to know where to get it but so far I have not been able to find the real thing. Life is full of dissapointments.......

A lot of years since this was posted...gotta appreciate UA-cam's electronic brain for surprising me with it...
Growing up in (very) Hillbilly rural central British Columbia in the 1960s, quite understandably Copperhead Road became an instant favourite...we didn't call our little valley a holler, and the road didn't have such a cool name, but the rest....pretty much spot on....
Mr. Coupland, this is an amazing version, incredibly well done, and a wonderful tribute to Steve Earle's efforts. It is raw and rough around the edges, but that is what makes it so cool, and how it invokes memories from 60 years ago....very nicely done.

Just saw the new movie LAWLESS...great movie about the Prohibition era. Them Bondurant Brothers were a force to be reckoned with! We need more men like them now a days as the FEDS have gotten a bit to big for their britches...

No, the words have a different meaning than what is said. A lot of people think it's about moonshiners. But it's more about doing what you have to to live. It's not always about working for someone else.

Look for the Foxfire book series about mountain people...in one of those, it explains how to build your own still from scratch, how to maintain it, and how to produce moonshine. Your post moved me and I hope you will track those books down, find the instructions, and produce your own. Good luck, my friend!:)

Good cover of the song... I love Steve Earle's version too, and have since it came out in 1988. I didn't need to wait for "Moonshiners" on Discovery. My great grandpa was a moonshiner in the hills of Virginia, and became a preacher in his later years... life is strange, isn't it? This song makes me homesick.

I am also of Scots and Irish descent and fiercely proud to hail from regions where the bravest and most steadfast freedom fighters in the world come from! And I too have some predisposition to the whiskey and tobacco. Unlike other immigrants to our fine country(where 13 signers of the declaration of independence were Scottish) the Scots and the Irish, while still proud of their ancestry were also proud of this nation they'd created instead of clinging to there homeland and pissing on the U.S.A

My Dad who grew up in east TN way up in the mtns, my grandpa was occasionally the town's Dep Sheriff. He never wanted to be Sheriff as they had 4 Sheriffs in one month, each killed by the shiners. Dad taught me how to look for good shine. He said "shake the bottle", turn the bottle over and it there are beads at the bottom of the bottle, do not drink! Once he and his brother got into some shine and had a fine time. 'Nuff said., just remember, look for the beads and do not touch.

You did an EXCELLENT job on this! I am officially impressed. My cousins used to make moonshine here in the Appalachian hills. I have some old photos somewhere. But hell, we was all dirt poor...got to make a living somehow. Scratching the dirt for potatoes, onions and beans only goes so far. We made muscadine wine and that was legal. But I drank a bit of moonshine in my 50+ years in the hills. I like the store bought stuff better to be honest. You could use that white for paint thinner!
