    I have a Patriot bolt action in 243. Bedded and floated, custom stock with adjustable cheek rest and Nikon calibrated BDC scope. I have bowling pins suspended at 100 yds and can sever the wire while on the bench.

    Such a beautiful rifle. It’s on my wish list, probably 450 bushmaster or 350 legend because I hunt in OH and require a straight wall cartridge

    I have several Mossberg rifles. The safety does need to lock the bolt. I will never own another rifle that does not do this. I have lost rounds like you and had the action fill with trash while carrying the rifle at the ready while still hunting. Everyone needs to contact Mossberg and tell them to place a 2 position bolt locking safety on the weapon. This is an inexpensive option that high end guns such as Sako, CZ, Weatherby, and newer Savage guns have . I believe this is a safety issue as debris could get into the bore and cause an over pressure problem. Call Mossberg and tell them to change the safety. I share none of your issues with the magazine and I have found them to be just fine. I like the trigger too.

      I agree with your consensus for them changing the saftey to something that locks the bolt, or even stiffens the bolt considerably. Hopefully they will continue to innovate the patriot series and not just come out with a different rifle with different issues

    I have the Mossberg Patriot, which was my first rifle. I have never actually hunted with it. I range tested it, kicked like a mule with that light stock. I kept fussing with it and then realized I wanted a comfortable rifle with adjustable cheek and bought the MVP in .308. Then, later, for giggles, I went back to the Patriot (also a .308 Win) and put it in an MDT LSS Gen 2 chassis, folding stock, and SCS butt stock. And a Vortex Venom scope. Shoots 1 MOA and is heavy, now, with all that metal and a 35 oz scope. So, I went back to basics and got the Thompson Center Compass II in .308 Win. Put on a Falcon Strike hydraulic recoil pad, silencerco ASR2 muzzle brake. Some goda grip cheek cushion, then topped that with some craft foam and vet tape to get the cheek rise I wanted with my Diamondback Tactical 6-24/60 mm scope.
    Anyway, I really like the Mossberg stuff. The Patriot has the lowest trigger weight at 1 pound 3.6 ounces. The MVP is 1 pound 7 ounces. The Compass II is 2 pounds 7.7 ounces. The heaviest trigger is my Windham Weaponry R16SFST-308 at 5 pounds. I also like my Mossberg 590A1 SPX 12 ga.
    The Mossberg Patriot series is so affordable and in so many calibers, I think anyone should get one but also be prepared to do something about recoil. To put it another way, it kicks like a Tikka T3 Ultralite.

      I agree, the mossberg patriot is one of the more heavy recoiling rifles, because of how light it is. My 300 win mag comes in at just under 6 pounds without the scope, and is just over 7 with the scope

      I have the same gun, same caliber, but I have not experienced the bolt issue. I do use mine mostly for prairie dogs, using 58gr. Hornady or Winchester rounds. I've been known to belly crawl to get closer to the town, but I can't say I've ever had the bolt handle lift while doing this.

      I don’t think I will ever sell this rifle, but I get it. If I regret some rifles I could not get at one time or another I will certainly miss the ones I have to give up. I would look on the used market now or a couple of months from now since hunting season is over, if you are considering getting another one

      I bought my youngest son one of these for Christmas 2020. It is a youth model in 6.5 creedmoor, finding ammo was an even harder task. It was literally the only youth model rifle within 200 miles of my house, and couldn’t find any online. I was skeptical about the Patriot, but got it for him so he would have it under the tree on Christmas. He got his first buck 2 days after and another one this year, last Tuesday. It was cheap, but has done well no complaints. When he is older and more experienced he can upgrade, but for now I am happy with what we put in it, and are getting out of it.

    I have the atr 100 in .243 which was kinda the 4x4 predecessor which was the predecessor of the Patriot. Mine does have a removable mag and it has a synthetic stock. I got it in 09 (the first couple years of them they apparently didn't have great triggers but mine has the LBA like yours and it's Great) would carrying it on your left shoulder possibly elevate the bolt opening issue?

    • @louderpowder3298
      @louderpowder3298  2 роки тому +2

      It depends. If I carry on my left now I don’t have to worry about the bolt catching on any brush, but I now have the concern of the bolt rubbing against my clothes. So it might not, but I will admit I have carried on the left very little, as I am right handed and right eye dominant, so carrying from the left makes very little sense for me. I will try some carrying on the left side and let you know

    I’ve heard a lot of complaints about accuracy, but I’ve never had a problem with mine. I have the wood stock like yours but in .308. Just put a new scope on it. 🤞🏻

    • @louderpowder3298
      @louderpowder3298  2 роки тому

      I have not heard to much in regards to accuracy issues, but I do not know many people who own them. Most everyone I know owns Remington products, and this was a breath of fresh air after my 770 experience. I think what can happen is because if the lighter barrel in these, they can get a shift in accuracy due to them heating up. I have had slight shifts aft I shoot a half box of 300 win mag, but it is to be expected. I’m shooting deer on a cold bore

    I have one in 243 and the only thing I don't like about it is the plastic magazine. Maybe someday they will make a steel replacement. A design improvement would be a 3 position safety. Still a great gun for the price.

    The barrel on my wood stock was closer on one side than the other. Seems a little lopsided. Wood stock looks nice but nylon is more consistant.

    • @louderpowder3298
      @louderpowder3298  2 роки тому +1

      I do not know, I have seen some of the nylon/polymer stocks that are factory being warped because they were allowed to be dropped out of the mold before they had fully cured. That surprises me about the wood stock, I have barely seen any of those wrong. Then again I had my stock which was not cut properly and would clip my bolt as I opened up the action.

  • @tdjohnsky

    The bolt shouldn’t open if the safety is on should it?

    • @louderpowder3298
      @louderpowder3298  Рік тому

      Edit: It always has opened when the safety is on. In addition, I carry with saftey on 1 in the chamber, so that is how I lose the round when slung over my shoulder.

    Well im glad you like yours! Mine is total JUNK! I purchased one of the youth model Bantam's with the plstic chassis and its "not" accurate and one one piece of the rifle fits tight. The 1st outting with it i fired off 60rds and hit a 12" plate 3 times. Twice at 50yrds and once at 100yrds! Mine is in 7mm08 and its the worst single rifle i have ever purchased. I do plan to buy a new chassis for it to give it a more stable base to shoot off of. But once i do that if it dosnt get any better ill pass it on to someone else "cheap"! Without the scope though ,because even though its a cheap one it works. Not great its just average and works.....nothing special but i have other rifles that could use one. But then again what did i expect from a 225.00 gun! JUNK!!! Maybe if mine was on a wood chassis it may have been better? but i wouldnt hold my breath!

      I’m not saying every one is good. That would be like saying every Toyota is good. I guarantee you can find a bad one. I would hit up mossberg and see what they say. They will probably get it resolved for ya. And another thing, you said you shot 60 rounds in the first outing, so the barrel can heat up quite a bit on hunting rifles like these. The barrel is thinner than a modern military rifle, so your poi might change after a few shots and having the barrel warm up. I would shoot it cold, and let it cool after shooting a group. If that does not help again I would contact mossberg

    • @louderpowder3298
      @louderpowder3298  2 роки тому

      Also if you are shooting at a plate that is only 12 inches, you might want to go bigger in case the sights got shifted or the scope that is mounted is way off. Find out where it is hitting. If you can do that you can figure out how tight of a group it is, and that can give you your moa as well as help you find where to adjust.

      It’s not usually the stock that causes inaccuracy, I wouldn’t waste the money on a new stock, I would also take louder powder advice, you should also try some different brands of ammunition sometimes it makes a big difference.

    • @louderpowder3298

      I would recommend 308, as when I shot my first deer, the meat came back out the entry and plugged it, so I had virtually no blood trail. I have it because I have the potential to run into and shoot bear where I hunt, and would like the extra capabilities. How big of hogs are you talking?

    With the things you showed in the video, I don't understand how you say it is a great rifle...even at the price it sells for.

    • @louderpowder3298
      @louderpowder3298  5 місяців тому

      I never said it was perfect, however for the price at the time of purchase, it was a good deal. They have since worked out the stock issues on other models I have seen, however the bolt may still be really easy to open. I will say as of late I have been able to get some longer range shooting with it. I have shot mine at 500 yards at a 10 inch gong, with repeated hits. It can be a great rifle in the right applications, such as an entry competition rifle, as they seem accurate enough to handle themselves. The mags can still suck as they loose rounds outside of the gun. However they do feed reliably when seated in the gun. I can give this a pass considering it’s price point. I would still say it is a good value for the money. If you want something better spend more money on something with better features and accessories. That’s all I can recommend if you are not satisfied with performance in certain areas

      I just picked up a Patriot 350 Legend for $329.00. The store lists them at $399 but had a big sale on all Mossberg rifles... $70 off! I'd been farting around wanting to try that round, so I picked one up. I bought an ATR 100 in .243 around 2008, for $260.00. I felt like $329 was worth the trying. Once the snow goes, I'll see what it's got.
