    I've been getting more into Dress shirts and upgrading my wardrobe so thank you very insightful content! Obviously haven't been able to go to the stores lately but these videos put things in perspective for when I am able to get back out and purchase more. I know you can buy online but for Dress shirts I definitely enjoy trying on first as well as other garments. Keep up the good work!

    I’ve been doing Brooks Bros custom shirts (non iron and regular) for a dozen years and have had some amazing shirts made, (at least 25) including many OCBD. I’m not sure now what direction the company is going to, in the future with the bankruptcy, but I’ve been completely happy. If your new to the custom shirt game, have only one made first (with any company) because there will be some changes in the fit after a few launderings. You need to see, feel and touch the fabric in person, so if your ordering on line, ask for samples.

    Great rundown 👍 think it is worth mentioning the effect that the collar will have on the versatility of the shirt. You need a proper (longer collar) if you want to use it for more formal looks (with a tie or even with a jacket). Some of the shorter and more casual OCDBs like from Uniqlo really should only be used casually 🙂👍

    I recommend at least trying Brooks Brothers. Off the rack they have five different fits in all the typical neck sizes and sleeve lengths. Lots of colors and patterns. Perfect collar roll. Made in USA and they run sales quite often. If their off the rack is somehow not good enough they have custom options.

    Always on the lookout for a longer shirttail and double buttons at the cuff. I freaking hate a large cuff opening without the option to fasten to the second button. Tons of makers don't include it. Drives me nuts. Just makes a person seem unkempt like a too-long sleeve on a jacket/blazer.

    I love your roundups! I'm sending this to few buddies of mine that are trying to upgrade their wardrobe.
    I had a terrible experience with Deo Veritas. The shirt they delivered was the wrong size in every dimension, and the one free fit guarantee remake they sent was literally the exact same in every dimension except one of the sleeves was shorter. Extremely unresponsive customer service. I had to find the owner's email address in a forum from years ago because no one else would respond.

    You missed a few OCBD staple companies:
    * Mercer & Sons
    * O'Connell's
    They're more prep/ivy league but are extremely well made but pretty boxy.

It’s a shirt that lasts because you can only l wear it comfortably 5 months (40 wears) out of the yr. Definitely a staple in the wardrobe but any temp over 80 F I’m reaching for a linen, poplin or a simple tee.

    I noticed you did a video on teddy Stratford a while back but don't seem to have mentioned them since unless I'm missing it. You seemed to give them a pretty favorable review so is there a reason they wouldn't be in this round up? I know they are technically not a button down since they do the zipper thing but still. Did you end up deciding that the conventional shirts are just better or would you still wear a TS shirt and how does it compare to some of these other brands in the same price range?

  • @kongmw

    i’m totally on board with reviews of fits being more centered on overall impressions rather than specifically how they do or do not fit reviewers. i’ve seen reviews on other channels (aimed at broad audience not specific subgroup) where they score something low because the OTR item didn’t fit their atypical body parts/proportions.

    • @Phafanapolis
      @Phafanapolis 3 роки тому +1

      Happens a lot in watch reviews: guys have abnormally small/large wrists and ding a model for not fitting their outside-the-box appendage.
      OTR is basically made to be tailored. If they fit well enough without alternations, that's great. But most shirts could use some fine tuning.

    Ledbury - buy if you have relatively long arms. For example, I typically wear a 15.5 neck 33" sleeve, a very common size. I think most shirt manufacturers offers 15.5/33. Ledbury starts with a 34" sleeve, and you have to pay extra to reduce the length. I did that, and it didn't come out great the first time, had to have it adjusted again. It's a bummer because I love the shirt, but I wouldn't recommend the extra cost of alteration compared to some other options.

    • @ReimerKeith
      @ReimerKeith 3 роки тому

      Using the length to control where it rides on your wrist results in a shirt that pulls up your arm when you reach outwards. Instead, keep a generous arm length and tighten the cuff to set where it rides.

    • @pattgsm
      @pattgsm 2 роки тому

      @@ReimerKeith Agreed. Most OTR 33, 34 are not accurate. Better to get slightly longer but closest to length and adjust the button or have a tailor make the length adjustment to your arm. Then you can actually get a perfect fit. These measurements can then be used later for a MTM/MTO shirt.

  • @michaelgraci2925

    Great Stuff Jon! A few pet peeves of mine. The shirt should be able to button comfortably at the neck. A few of those shirts appeared like they would not. Silly I know, but I look at a guy with open collar & wonder, "can he button that?" Transparent OCBDs! On far too many shirts today, you can see skin through the fabric (even some of the custom shirts). Sleeve length is another, some of the shirts (images on the manufacturers sites) were either too long or short. Your white Mack Weldon, suffers from both (transparent & short sleeved). You said you've had for a while, so it might be time to make it an under layer to your favorite sweater. :). Terrific content. Good many options to consider. Thanks

    This might be a bit pedantic, but OCBD stands for Oxford Cloth Button Down shirt, not Oxford Cotton Button Down. The Oxford cloth uses a particular weave for the shirt cloth, which has been incorporated into the name of the shirt.
    That being said, your rundown of shirt brands is pretty good, and generally informative. I will add, however, that you tend to bias your comments towards the brands that provide slimmer fits. Brooks Brothers and JPress provide a classic fit that provides more room than most of the other brands you mentioned. So, if you are a bit larger than average, take a look at what they have to offer.
    LL Bean is another brand whose OCBDs deserve consideration. They offer both a classic fit and a more tapered waist, though I don’t think that they are as dramatically tapered as many brands. They offer them in solid colors, bengal stripes and tattersall patterns.
