- Apple's new $99 HomePod mini officially launched yesterday, with the first pre-order purchases arriving to customers and Apple beginning in-store sales. We picked up a new HomePod mini and thought we'd test it out for MacRumors viewers who are curious how Apple's smaller HomePod measures up to the original model.

Thank you for muting "Hey Siri" 😂, so my HomePods don't go crazy.
I found it hilarious during the event, they kept saying Hey Siri and the HomePods in my bedroom kept activating.
I bought two HomePod Minis. I was blown away by the sound quality. I set them up in my office but I am thinking about moving them to the TV area where the full sized HomePod sits. The absolute best part is that the space gray HomePod Mini looks like a mini Death Star and fits in perfect with my office Star Wars decor.
I’ve got 2 minis on preorder for upstairs. Do you think it’s worth selling my larger downstairs HomePod and buying two smaller ones for downstairs to get 1 system for the house?
I just purchased the 2 blue HomePod mini speakers, and they sound really nice…they are so fetch !
Me judging the audio quality while listening from my iPhone speakers....
Funny thing is... You can get the idea, KUDOS TO THE iPhone team
It sounds great but doesn't get that loud. It could use a bit more bass too.
If you compare Apple products with other brands at similar prices, Apple devices would have much better sound. Even my Mac Mini from 2014 has better sound than most laptop computers with built-in speakers. BTW, my wife asks what I'd want as a New Year gift, I'm gonna pick the HomePod Mini. Oh, happy new year to whoever sees this.
Just got 2 yesterday. Sound really good. I love how they use stereo sound on my Apple TV. So far so good!!
HomePod mini cannot have just the wall plug at the end of the cable because does not have an integrated transformer, which big homepod has; the usb plug is the transformer for the HP mini
Correct, it's to save space within the HP itself.
You’re a good guy, Fabio. Have you been in any more book covers lately?
And with an usb c powerbank, HomePod Mini kind of gets mobile
So can you plug 2 directly into the 16’ MacBook Pro and have room filling stereo sound?
Jockney dont expect minis to work via cable...
Hmmmmmmm, why am I even watching this?
Literally listening to this on my HomePod mini.
So, what do you think?
Really nice! Can’t wait for my second one to arrive so I can set up my stereo pair 😁
@Sean Nelson Yeah, I know. You have to wait even longer for the Space Grey ones, I ordered mine 4 days ago and it is coming mid-December😢. Also, did you mean November?
😂
4 months late to this…but I got a HomePod mini yesterday 😂
Just got one and the sound is INSANE!
We already have the original HomePod and bought two of these for other rooms. They work and sound really, really good.
Kudos for actually turning it on. It sounds awesome!
Mine arrived today, i love it. I just wanted a speaker for my bathroom, it’s perfect for the price
Fantastic sound, works with my HomeKit setup
I did pre-book my HomePod minis, but the shipment to the Apple store got a bit delayed so I’m still waiting to get mine. Seeing all the reviews I sure am getting more and more impatient yet excited to get them!
Love that your go-to was Seaway
I have had this since the day it came out. I'd recommend it to anyone with an iPhone, just as a home speaker alone.
And the biggest issue that EVERYONE ignores is privacy, and security of your privacy. There is a reason that most everything works with google and alexa.
Hey Dan, I've really been enjoying your videos lately! Great job!
I am going to start the switch to homepod/ homekit as well. I have installed a Starling hub for Nest products. It works really well as a bridge to the Nest products.
Barely anything supports HomeKit, thats the biggest problem. All assistants function similarly, but they need to function.
My whole home works in Homekit, 32 lighting devices (including outlets/lamps), garage door, cameras, fans, outlet switches, fire alarm, 3 homepods, 1 homepod mini and a thermostat with motion and temp sensors in every room. But yeah.... barely anything at all.... /s I had Alexa and Homekit running simultaneously for a while. Alexa was always thinking we were talking to her. Had to be at least 3-5 times a day. Watching television was the worst culprit, but still picked up our conversations incorrectly too. Siri maybe gets an incorrect request once or twice a week. (meaning they think we asked them something and did not). I'd much rather have less devices, but devices that actually work and are secure vs. a ton of crap devices.
It’s so cute ~ I bought one today and so far so good.
Just got mine today and it truly sounds incredible.. Now I want one in every room 💸💸
Aamyko i get it to day and the sound is so bad that i buyed a harman kardon
@@Freddy-zi8rw it’s pretty solid considering the size, overall the sound is very good.
Yay! New Red City Radio on the way! I have a Mini on order.
I use the regular HomePods for my Apple TV 4K in the bedroom and they're amazing! Sound quality is nuts...im for sure picking these up for the living room listening.
I’d love the ability to add 3 of these for center and surround speakers for 5.1 plus external sub.
This video seems more personal than the other. I like the style.
Thank you. Your video was really helpful. 👍🏻
The Homepod Mini is... amazing!
I switched it on and the stereo with the Homepod is awesome!
Can you say eargasm? 😊
Two great features are you can use it as a Home Hub and supports Thread.
Great Music choice!
Great review. Love the Bobcat hoodie!
Yep, makes me feel like I’m back on court street
I have four HomePods I have two big ones and two little ones and they’re all hooked together to my Apple TV. I can play the ones in the rear by themselves of the room or I can play the front ones by themselves or I can play them altogether for stereo affect in my room they’re really cool.
I'm an android guy, using Fold 3 right now. But do own Apple TV 4K 2021, iPad Pro M1 11Inch with magic keyboard for games and mails etc. So bought these specifically for night time use with Apple TV. It arrives today so hope it works great.
Now that outlets are starting to add usb c it does make it cool to be able to use it without the brick
I see the OG HomePod and the Mini as almost two completely different products with the original being more of an audio product with Siri and the Mini as a smart home speaker with decent audio
In the topic of Apple making good speakers, I was looking at external speakers while I first ordered my iMac ten years ago and waiting for it to ship. Then when it arrived it was obvious that I didn’t really need to buy one. The iMac speakers were already loud and good sounding.
Thanks for the video. How’s the latency from Bluetooth when you are watching a video?
My husband has a Google Home Mini & Spotify for the kitchen and I just got a HomePod Mini with Apple Music for my home office and I can say the HomePod Mini blows the Google Mini out of the water with sound quality. There’s no comparison. And I am all in on the Apple ecosystem for my needs while he has a mix of Apple & Google but I personally would never use a Google or Amazon smart speaker for my use because of privacy concerns. Privacy & sound quality are two things Apple & Siri excel at.
After buying/trying most of Amazon’s Echo devices, I held my breath and ordered a single HP mini, hoping it would at least do voice better, but not expecting much for music. I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, voice is much clearer than Echo devices and music actually sounds decent too, even surprisingly good. I’m sold.
HP--the stock symbols for Hewlett-Packard?
Love this but haven’t it in Ireland yet 😔
For £99 it’s a great speaker for a bedroom, kitchen etc.
I bought two Minis to do exactly that.
Best for old parents who just want to say any music and play it or playlist
Great video. If you have any feedback on how to get the HomePod to play “my” playlists and not Apple Music, please let me know. Thanks
You have to find the correct bridge switchover. Like for lights Phillips. But c by ge works with HomeKit if you have c reach. I think the have cameras and etc @macrumors
I am a huge Apple fan boy...and would love to deck my place up with homepods...but I still opened for Amazon echos mainly due to compatibility with a wider range of smart devices. Hopefully as time passes Apple continues to add further support. Anyone have the same issue with HomeKit?
Plug that into my power bank and take it into the garden 😁
Hello,
how's the sound in comparison of the homepod?
Are the cords the same length as on the regular HomePod?
I’ve found that if you hold the phone right up to the top front of the HomePod directly on the the other side of the power cable hand off works every time i have the OG HomePod and it works with my iPhone XS Max and iPhone 12 Pro Max
can you please provide the link for the lamp in the background?
I am replacing all my google homes with these now, I need to control lights, set timers, and play music through my Sonos system around my house. Works great so far!
mine arrived yesterday and ive already ordered 3 more!
I love my new HomePod Mini, I’ve never had a Google Nest or anything else and I’m still getting used to it. I love the color when you talk to Siri I think it looks so sick I only wish it could be that color or change colors while you listen to music.
Can we connect two homepod mini's with LG OLED with Airplay 2?
Transfer to Homepod tip:
hold the top edge of your iPhone to the side of the HomePod, keep the screen flat/facing up
Did you just learn this or did you know this 2 years ago when Apple included this in original HomePod?
@@studivan I’ve owned a Homepod since they were released, transfer to Homepod is actually a relatively new feature from iOS 13, and it’s only recently gotten fast and reliable enough to use.
I think you’re right, for the most part other speakers are better (by that, they can do more), but it is the respect for privacy (or so they tell us, haha) that makes me like the HomePod over other, cheaper, products.
cory wong!!! macrumors got a respect bump!!
He’s so good.
How do you all have yours. I ordered mine from Apple UK, but delivery is mid-Jan. 😢
Can it be powered by an external battery? And, can it be connected to a personal hotspot and used while camping?
Since it have usb c, technically could you plug into a MacBook and use that as a speaker?
Will this work with my Tidal app. via a 2020 MacMini?
Ordered the white one too (will be here in Dec :( and from your video, it looks good! Please tell me Siri gives an auto cue when after "Hey Siri"? On my iPhone mini, Siri simply lights up so if I'm not near my phone I can't tell if it heard Hey Siri or not. Bring back the damn "ding!"
Love to see you rockin the Ohio shirt.
When I play my Sonos one on my Mac there is a delay in audio. Will these prevent that?
Does it integrate with smart life?
This may have been mentioned earlier but there is a Nest to HomePod bridge that apparently works very well. The Starling Home Hub is $89. No, I have no connection with them but that would solve your issue. 9 to 5 Mac recommends it.
I have an Echo and and HomePod and while the Echo is compatible with a lot more products, i think thats not always a good thing. A lot of those products aren’t that good. The HomePod is a speaker first and thats what i like about it most and it works very well with HomeKit products.
Well spoken
I never cared for Alexa, Google Assistant is definitely way "smarter" but at the end of the day I really only use a voice assistant for home control, audio control, and some random queries like setting a timer.
Agreed, unless you use LIFX. They are horrible
Which is why I a SOOOO glad that Mi has added support for HomeKit on their products like Yeelights:) You can buy 2 or 3 of them for the same price of a single philips hue or LifX lightbulb!!! And I think the reason HomeKit supports less products is because Apple is stricter on quality control. They hate to be affiliated with anything that isn’t good quality, and thus you don’t get crappy products with HomeKit support but you do get horrendously crappy products that support Alexa... So good and bad thing at the same time. Less of a range but superior quality which is better for long term.
Sony and Bose make much better speakers if that’s what you think is the most important, and they support open standards like Bluetooth.
Apple re-encodes all wireless audio as AAC on all their devices, whereas most other wireless speaker manufacturers will use Apt-X or Apt-X HD which acts as a wrapper for the audio, and doesn’t re-encode it producing quality loss.
It is works any iphone and ipad models?how is the sounds in the music-Netflix-UA-cam?it works in any Spotify Country?
nice Cory Wong reference. Good taste.
The day they allow you to change the wake word to “computer” I’m in. Until then Alexa is sticking around in my house.
Apple absolutely should allow "Computer..." as the wake word. ua-cam.com/video/hShY6xZWVGE/v-deo.html
What an odd stipulation.. But to each their own
@@kcbc9037 I think he's referencing Scotty and Star Trek 4
@@faisal181 ahh. I’ve never watched Star Trek but that would make more sense.
@@kcbc9037 it was actually a pretty funny scene when they went back in time (or at least I thought It was when iw as a kid LOL) LOL ua-cam.com/video/hShY6xZWVGE/v-deo.html
Great video as usual. I'm looking at getting 2 HomePod minis and use them as main sound for Apple TV, can they provide stereo sound to the TV when paired ? Maybe you can do a test once you receive the second one and let us know. Many thanks
Can you plug it into a Mac directly and have it output audio over USB? Could be a nice audio upgrade for my iMac.
Yes, I saw other youtubers doing that on their reviews and it worked.
@@thegamingenderman198 really I haven’t found any videos about this. Can you share a link?
If Spotify pushes support, I'd definitely be interested. Until then its kind of a tough sell over Sonos.
I have an interesting question for you-can I connect home pod mini to my echo dot as a speaker so that when I say “Alexa play this on Spotify”, it will play it on home mini.
I have a similar set up with my IKEA symphonisk and eco dot at the moment.
No, it will no connect to an echo dot.
Will it work for a home theater if you have 2 of them?
Yes.
Nice video . We’re did you get that L.E.D color changing lamp?
that’s be a Phillips Hue color ambiance bulb screws into any socket
Hope they add the ability to set a pair as the default for Apple TV audio in the future.
I’m trying to figure out if any new features will be available on the standard HP.
Yes, apparently a software update later this year will give HomePod the mini capabilities ie., intercom
Let me know when it supports Spotify.
OHIO!! Thank you!
De ac brick + usb-c cable is to save space in the speaker i guess
Is there a way to disable Bluetooth so my neighbors do not connect and play music at 2 am? Yes my neighbors are annoying and do that with all my other speakers.
Try comparing the sound performance with a Sony SRS-XB10.
If you have the HomePod, you can connect your HomePod mini to it to create more sound. You can also continue music on one, and then use the other for Siri, a phone call, and etc.
Is it possible to pair four HomePod Minis in room so that they all play the same?
@Dan, does it work with the Apple 18w adapter or PD power bank?
Haven’t tested but some others who have said it does not
@@macrumors thank you! Damn you Apple! lol...
Does it work with UA-cam Music?
Cool
I LOVE the ORIGINAL HomePod !!!!
(IS there a ”rechargeable battery” on the Minis?
No, there isn’t. It has to be plugged in all the time.
The seri shortcuts app is incredibly powerful at turning creating custom Siri actions. Its nearly a whole programing language and can pass tuns of different data to you from all sorts of apps. or even pass that data between them! its way way way under advertised! people need to know about this!
Does the handoff feature on HomePod mini only works with U1 equipped iPhone? ( iPhone 11 or later )
works on my iphone x
Can you use the USB-C to connect directly to an iPad or Mac and use it as an external speaker?
No
Hell No! You can only use Apple products for what they are intended to be used as.
Can you connect it to a Mac?
6:05 lol
I’m confused about the “home theater sound bar replacement” statement you made in this video indicating it wasn’t fully compatible with 2 Minis currently? I have considered buying 2 of these to replace a soundbar based on the Apple website indicating this would be seamless? They even show instructions if you have nothing but Apple TV 4K streaming compatibility. Essentially, turn off flat screen audio, connect stereo minis to ATV, should work? If you mean that you have an ATV paired with an old school receiver and cable DVR, different scenario all together. Yes?
You’ll have to airplay from Apple TV to mini every time. Won’t be default choice whenever you watch tv
@@macrumors To add to the confusion, 2 regular homepods then brings Dolby Atmos but I would still have to airplay? Or is home pod mini in only requiring AirPlay? Are 2 homepods the sound bar replacement?
Like mine very much. Trying to figure out how to add several iPhones, iPads to the one in our kitchen so each of us can answer questions.
@MacRumors Can I stereo pair the SATANDARD HOMEPOD with the HOMEPOD MINI?
Unfortunately not.
Does Siri’s functionality differ between the mini and standard HomePod?
I ordered one on a whim, but my deliver date is eight days after launch! Eight days? Whaaat? I thought it bad when my Xbox came a day late.
I ordered mine a few days ago, currently it says it will be delivered by Jan 4th! Hopefully that changes, I want it now...
I have a Bose sound bar on my TV. Will having this speaker in the same room add surround sound? Will it work with my Bose speaker?
Not sure if this is just my problem. I set 2 up with a soundbar in my living room. When I have sound output to the homepods and the soundbar, the apple tv remote will only control volume on the soundbar. When I change the sound output to only the homepods, the apple tv remote will then be able to change the volume of the homepods.

Can HomePod mini be powered by an iPad Pro??
I believe the mini has USB C cable which can be plugged in iPad Pro, not sure if iPad can supply enough power.
No, I don’t think so. I think someone tested with the Mac and it could not produce enough power.
Hey Macrumors. In terms of how to get stuff which is not HomeKit compatible to run with Homekit I came across Hoobs: hoobs.org. I do not have the product nor am I sent by them but I am currently looking myself on how to install a HomeKit system. And found this system very handy as it supports Ring, So maybe this might be an option?
Love the Ohio shirt
If it supported Spotify I’d put it on my Xmas list.
How’s Airplay work? Is it basically Bluetooth?
Great video Dan The Man!
AirPlay is WiFi-driven, I believe. I don’t think it’s Bluetooth.
@@benvreed I’ve asked some other people. It’s basically like Bluetooth but not compressed because your on the same WiFi network. But if you go out of range of the WiFi it doesn’t work
Apple commands are there and a bit more customizable than Alexa, in my opinion. Apple has them in Shortcuts, not within the Apple Home app. My homepods can turn on my Apple TV, open Netflix, start HBOmax while dimming the lights. The downside is the homepods need to be on the same wifi as a device running Shortcuts. I have an iPad that controls my whole home and doesn't leave the house. So as long as my iPad doesn't die, the homepod can run Shortcuts easily. If your device disconnects from the network or dies, homepod will tell you the device required to run the command is not available and to check the device to make sure its connected to the same network as the homepod.
Can you plug the HomePod mini into a battery pack, thus making it portable?
Yes, the battery needs to support Power Delivery 3.0 and be 20watts+. I'm using one right now.
@@gingerman5123 Nice! Thanks... :))))
I wanted to ask this question! I wanna take this into my camper
I saw this video on my home pod mini!! And it's worth buying! Would recommend it straight away :)
