Ticwatch Pro 3 Review: Wear OS Finally Works!

  • The TicWatch Pro 3 GPS looks an awful lot like the last TicWatch Pro from Mobvoi - and the one before that, too. But don’t let appearances fool you: the Mobvoi TicWatch 3 is the first smartwatch to carry Qualcomm’s newest system-on-a-chip designed specifically for wearables, the Snapdragon Wear 4100. Specs still matter on smartwatches much more so than on smartphones, and that 4100 combines with a generous 1GB of RAM to make the TicWatch 3 the most performant smartwatch Wear OS has ever seen.
    When you factor in the innovative dual-layer display and battery life heretofore unseen on a Google-powered wearable … you get the best Wear OS smartwatch of 2020. Join Michael Fisher for a two-week test drive featuring the smartwatch that fixed Wear OS, in MrMobile’s Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 3 Review!

    Got mine 4 days ago, and unexpectedly, no regrets so far. As mentioned in the review, I'm also missing the crown, but that's something I can live with. I get 2,5 days with very heavy use out of that watch, and that's OK, compared to the half day of the Fossil Gen 5. There are still minor issues with Wear OS, but everything is manageable. First smartwatch that I have, that is actually an addition to my everyday life.

    I bought the TicWatch Pro 3 based - in part - on your video here. I believe there are 3 critical things that can make this about the best watch on the market today...and one of them they already fixed. First is give us the option of turning off the backlight every time we move our wrist to do virtually anything. Thankfully, in a recent update, this was taken care of (thank you Mobvoi). Second, give us a rotating crown to help us scroll around instead of relying entirely upon touching the screen...and third, get rid of the haptic motor you use and put something in that actually WORKS. The haptic motor in the TicWatch Pro 3 is easily the most anemic, useless motors I have ever used. It just sucks. Period. Fix the last two and I don't think any watch can truly beat it running Wear OS.

    You have to be my new favorite channel to watch for mobile tech news. I like what you bring to the table, your insight which I agree with almost 100% of the time, and-because I work in radio, I personally like your delivery, too. Very natural without falling into "announcer mode" like so many other reviewers do.
    Like you, I really like what Wear OS is capable of delivering. Unfortunately, in my 7-8 watches I've owned, none of them actually did just that. Glitches. Hiccups. Stalling. Sudden app closures. Taking forever to open almost ANYTHING. It just wore on me. QUICK. I finally switched to Tizen back with the Gear S2, and I haven't really had a compelling reason to go back to Wear OS at all...that is until I saw your Oppo Watch review. While I would have preferred it pack the Wear 4100 chip and bluetooth 5.0, I ordered one anyway because, while it really IS an apple lookalike, I think with those curved edges, I prefer it more. I just think it needs a rotating crown, just like you. Thank you again for your review. The Ticwatch Pro 3 just may be my next smart watch. You rock, my friend. Keep up the good work.

    Although I don't use it as much as I once did, my pebble time steel still works like a charm. While dictation is subscription based, Rebble maintains the the basic functions of the Pebble. Although many have made videos on how the Pebble still lives on with Rebble, I think it would be a cool video idea for you to revisit the Pebble and how it still compares to other watches, even with it's flaws.

    Wear improvements over the last 3 years have made the biggest difference. I've just refreshed my LG Watch Sport for the second time, with new straps and a new battery. Full day usage from 7am till midnight with typically 20% remaining, this with LTE all during that time.
    When new over 3 years ago I was lucky if I got half that time.
    Dig it out of your draw and put a fresh new battery in it (easy to do) you will be surprised!

      @karthikgnskasi209 3 роки тому +10

      @@watn3yold119 the very first ticwatch had it. The term "tic" comes from that tickle. The first gen ones used to have a capacitive strip onto the (more bottom) side of watch which is used for scrolling without touching the watch like the one on watch active 2 but imagine 1/4 part of that strip. Removing that feature was the most dumbest ommision done by mobvoi.

    • @CForce

      Watn3y instead of using a crown or the screen you can use the sides of the watch to tap and slide through the OS. Keeps the screen clean and doesn’t require an actual nob. It can be limited though

    I've been using the TicWatch Pro 3 for about a week. And I really like the watch.
    My only problem is the battery life, I can just, and just barely get 2 days out of it, and that is with light use. The first day I used it, went over to some friends, and the watch was at around 53-58% charge, so plenty for a evening out. Next time I looked at the charge, it was down to around 23%, within an hour's or so, and when it got down to just under 20% I put it in essential mode, but that didn't help to keep the watch alive till we got home. It has gotten better, but it tops at just under 2 days.
    So I'm afraid I have to send it in, and get a replacement, which sucks, as I really like the watch.

    I have the Casio Pro Trek, and one reason why I got it is because it's still a watch when the computer battery dies. After going through a few smart watches, and suffering the consequences of forgetting my proprietary charging adapter while far from home, I like that feature a lot. I also liked the big, chunky form factor. My all-time ultimate watch still is the very first digital watch, the Synchronar 2100. That's one chunky watch that becomes an unintentional hammer if you gesticulate, but it's just an outstanding industrial design. It's not dainty, and not meant to be.

    I had the first Pro as it came out back in the days. The problem with the first gen was when you didn't wear the watch both displays turned off after some time and didn't want to turn back on. The watch was reacting to the touches, but the screen was blank. Reboot was the only solution.

    As an Apple watch user and fan, I'm so happy watch os finally good. A bit of competition is good for the market.

      @@shurchil69 if I was a fan boy/girl I wouldn't be happy that watch os is competitive now would I? I'm not like you mate, I don't let brand loyalty override my decision.

      @@the-boring-car-guy Same boat here. I use iphone with apple watch, but would be willing to switch to the droids if there is a good enough watch out there. And those $25 fitness trackers are a big no.

    I just tried the same Google assistant command on my ancient huawei watch (1st gen) to see how things had improved. It took a few seconds to open the assistant, then I accidentally cancelled the voice input due to the lag, then when it did start it misheard me. Things are definitely better on this new snapdragon 4100! That said im surprised that the interface hasn't changed one bit

    Would be nice to have a smartwatch with the features of Samsung ones, battery life of Huawei ones and the secondary LCD screen of this one...

    Thanks for the review. I love my Ticwatch Pro 1st gen, although the “speed” is an issue. Mainly switching betweeen monochromatic and OLED display. So the 3rd gen is finaly faster also when switching between the displays? Thanks

    Finally! A proper wear os smartwatch.
    That's exactly what I wanted and what I'll probably buy. I don't like being limited to one manufacturer, so Huawei is out of the question, I haven't seen any other watch other than Samsungs running Tizen... So WearOS is the only OS I'd use on a smartwatch at the moment.

    • @Spiriluli
      @Spiriluli 3 роки тому

      Everything seems to be heading towards WearOS anyway and that's the logical thing to happen. More manufacturers opting for WearOS means more support from both Google and app developers. The consumer also benefits from more competition from manufacturers, which brings prices down

    Would like to see Michael do a update to this review based on the number of people having long term problems with this watch. I bought one based on this review. Watch is everything he said it was.... Until it wasn't. One day it just went dead half way through the day. When I charged it up it was acting strange, sensors not working and even at full battery the TN displays showed an empty battery error. Looked on the mobvoi website and saw on their forums a lot of people with the same problem. Advise was to put the phone into "ship" mode and then restart it. This got the sensors working again but after that I never got more than 7 hours battery life. Even just leaving the watch lying on my desk, after 7 hours it was dead. There is a serious bug with this watch. Mine was about 2 months old when this happened.
