Citizen's First Smartwatch (Costs $200 Too Much)

- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- The CZ Smart is the first proper smartwatch from Citizen, a Japanese watchmaker whose eponymous brand just turned 103 years old. Citizen also happens to be the company from which I bought my very first wristwatch, as a fresh-faced seventeen year old on the day after his junior prom. So while it could be said I've been waiting twenty years to properly review a timepiece from this company, and it’s always exciting to see a traditional watch-maker dip its toes into the smartwatch space ... I'm sorry to say that Citizen's first effort falls a bit flat. Join me to learn why, in MrMobile's Citizen CZ Smart Review!

“Old watch is an heirloom, Old Smartwatch is e-waste”
This sums up whole review perfectly
You have a point. I don't think anyone will be handing this down to a grandson. On the other hand, it's pretty cool to get workout stats from a watch and also be able to go phoneless.
Agree.. He's a genius crafting those endings!!
That's actually the essence of any smart watch. That's why I don't see a point in buying those
@@rumatadestora Yes, Smartwatches have their own utilities and benefit but it’s not long lasting. After 2-3 years battery will give up and there’s no easy way to replace it.

Your reviews keep on getting better and better, I think you are currently the best reviewer on UA-cam... job well done as always 👏 👍

Seconded.
It's always so well written
"An old watch is an heirloom; an old smartwatch is e-waste."
Sums up my thoughts about smartwatches so elegantly. Your scripting is tight as always. Great work.
Is there any chance a smartwatch would last at least 5 years or more ?
Words is Wisdom, that needs to passed on from one generation to the next, "Old watch is a Heirloom, an Old smart watch is E-Waste".
My jurassic park burger king watch still works... had to replace the battery though. I will pass it down lol.

I never really buy any of the things you use because I have a very different tech taste. I just really enjoy watching your videos!
Cool story
@@TN_AU he's complimenting Mr mobile on his video. What's wrong with that?
@@kopfschuss881 whats wrong with saying "cool story"?
Edit: My definition of "cool story" is, cool I like the reply.
Haha, I can relate. If I were to get a smartwatch, it would undoubtedly be an Apple Watch. Android smart watches wouldn’t work all that well with my phone anyway. But it’s always nice to see what’s happening on the other side of the fence!
Yeah Michael has a gift of telling interesting things about things you aren't even into.
Hell i don't even care for smart watches 😜
Still love his content haha
You make some of the most enjoyable tech reviews on UA-cam. Long time viewer here! Congrats on finally reaching 1M BTW, it should have happened way before.
Something about smartwatches I've been noticing over the years is that as well as not having a great longevity to them (if not in hardware, then in software), is that manufacturers continue to try cramming in as many functions of a smartphone into a smaller rounded touchscreen rather than focusing on a less is more approach. Seeing the use of the crown as an analogue interface for the UI is great to see more of because, well trying to accurately press icons on smartwatch screens is frustrating at times and nobody wants their beautiful watch face obscured by smudge marks
Idk, my first gen Samsung Galaxy Watch is still running fine, and it turns 3 yrs old later this yr. And looks cosmetically still good too despite the bashing its taken over the yrs
@@ru2225 you are lucky, had 2 Galaxys that had the screen go bad super fast. =(
ua-cam.com/video/Y7Za2aq2X9E/v-deo.html
@@CRANEREVIEWSah unlucky, typical mega corporation's quality control I guess. I've swam with mine at beachs (salt water) and took it rock climbing and it survived with 0 issues.
A “less is more” approach would be to ditch round displays altogether. Only reason mechanical watches were round was because there was a cog in the middle making a sweeping circular movement. Then it was effectively turns into a square watch once the lugs were added on, just with lots of wasted space between the dial and the lugs. Much better to start with a square watch in the first place. Just lazy design without any real thought behind it. Citizen could have done something different here, but the execs are flogging an old design and pretending its made by Citizen.
I can't tell you how much I related to this video. My first "real watch" I ever purchased myself as an adult, was also a Citizen. I've also inherited my fathers first watch, which is also a Citizen (It's over 30 years old and still works great!). Finally, I've also been trying to talk myself out of buying the SkyHawk for my upcoming birthday LOL. Awesome video, Mr. Mobile. All the best to you!
The BEST reviews! Always have to stop whatever I'm doing to make time for Mr Mobile.
"You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation." This is why I love traditional watches. You can have a pre-WWII Omega that still keeps good time and is wearable (just for the love of God keep it away from water). These smart watches will last at most for a couple of years until their batteries are shot, then it's landfill time.
Lies this whole comment is a complete lie. I had every Apple Watch and I sell it and it’s gets a new life... even with the iPhones. It’s older people that’s always have doubts about new techs.
@@JoshuaTruckin but those iPhones and Apple Watches are not going to last more than a few years at most with their new owners. The batteries will degrade over time and eventually the manufacturers will stop supporting old models. Unlike a quality mechanical watch which are usually built to last.
Even an oldschool digital watch will last pretty much forever. Just change the batteries in time and a F91 will soldier on for decades. A perfect little heirloom to give to your 4-year old son, low in monetary value but not in sentimental.
@@JoshuaTruckin Having bought & sold them like that suggested that you never used any of them for more than 3 years. try to use one of those for TEN YEARS just ONCE for a change, & we'll see if you could still say the same thing.
@@TheLaXandro Even old smartphones back in the mid-2000s could easily last over a decade, probably even without a need to change their batteries. smartphones these days, along with smartwatches, good luck having them last over 5 years with constant use.
Man, the production and script in these mrmobile reviews are the ceiling on what tech reviewers should be. Made me wanna buy a classic watch sheet WATCHing it
I wholly appreciate your candor and willingness to criticize brands when something could be done better, or cheaper. Thank you for your honesty.
You are an awesome honest reviewer. Humbly introduces a sponsor by not irritating the viewers. Great job mate keep it coming.
Bought the same watch in 2000 and still keep it in mint condition. Time literally flies.
As always, a reviewer I can trust. Thanks MrMobile. I'm also a long time Citizen fan and this just hurts feelings that they put so little effort into it.
I think you hit the nail on the head with this review, I've had smartwatches come and go but throughout the years I've still always gone back to my Oris automatic.
So, your resolution for 2021 was that you lift up the already very high production efforts and presentation quality to new levels?! From what we see...oh and one more thing: the chosen background music is wonderful, Michael! Keep it!
I loved loading classic watch faces from Omega and Panerai on my Asus Zenwatch 3 until it finally died. I've been watching your channel for a while now, and it always convinces me not to buy a replacement just yet. I'm hoping soon you do encourage me to finally replace that missing watch on my arm.
I personally own a Fossil Gen 5, but I will definitely be going back to traditional watches. I find myself currently wearing my Orient Bambino more than my smartwatch. They are just heartless shells. I like the longevity of an actual watch, Citizen with their EcoDrive makes some of the best Quartz out watches for the price. Just so many options, so many styles, but most importantly, those watches have some semblance of horology behind them.
I really enjoy your videos, Michael. For years I hope to find a review done by you on a piece of mobile tech. Even before Mr. Mobile brand. Keep it up.
Wear OS reminds me of the failed MSX gaming console platform from way back and after that 3DO. The manufacturers were/are limited in what they can do and seem to lack the imagination and freedom that comes with creating your own platform. Hence, the success of the superb Samsung (Tizen powered) S3 (still good two years later!) and of course, the Apple Watch, although I prefer circular over rectangular. ;) Citizen should work with Samsung to create a smartwatch that will last at least a decade by using a processor that will not age so quickly and feature a large screen, no dark bezel area that makes the screen look larger than it is, like this Citizen. Great review as usual Mr Mobile! :)
When you said the smartwatch won't last 20 years you are spot on. I used to collect watches and have several that are 15 to 20 years old and still running great, I also have an Apple Watch Series 2 that this week has started to stop holding charge it would seem. In the last two days I would put it on at 8am and it would be dead within 5 hours. In the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal considering it didn't cost that much but for anyone buying one of these types of watches that's what they should expect and I babied my watch, never put it in water or worked out in it or used it for phone calls etc, so a heavy handed user I imagine would have less longevity.
Your story telling allows us to feel like we are on the journey with you.
A great give away you could offer would be a day spent with you. Learn how to create from beginning to end. "A day with Mr Mobile" contest.
I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem with someone sponsoring this.

Smooth production and hit the nail on the head when you said old smart watches is an e- waste .looking forward for the latest smart watch reviews...
@Mr Mobile Micheal Fisher lol is this even true ?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 @mrmobile ??
Since your review on the first Samsung's edge phone few years ago, i felt something different , this is how a tech journalist should sound ! Never disappointed ! Thank you 🙏
I love MrMobile videos, Michael's presentation style is unique and infectious 💖🇿🇦

As always, I live for these reviews. Thanks as always Michael!!
@Mr Mobile Micheal Fisher haha nice try
I too am a huge fan of Citizen Eco watches. This is the most relative video on why I will wait to buy my 1st smart watch. Thanks Michael!
Thank you for ticking all MY boxes. My first “adult” watch was a Citizen Promaster Windsurfing watch (which I lost, replaced and then found!) For me, (after near hits (and misses)) with two Apple Watches and complete misses with Montblanc and Tag Heuer smart watches I had a lot of hope for the CZ... for just about the same reasons as you listed: robust build and the ability to ‘dial-up’ (pun intended) a collection of faces from the Citizen Hall of Fame. From what you’ve said, I’m going to park those ambitions for version two.
Thank you. I really enjoyed this review and found it helpful.
Honesty, refreshing. Your dad gave you more than just a watch. Continued good luck!
citizen fan here... and I 100% agree with you, missed opportunity and too much of a price disparity.
Hi Mr. Mobile I love you videos, I hope you continue. I like that you do them even though we are in a rough time. Stay Mobile
I love your watch reviews. That's something no one does. Keep it up! 🔥
Thumbs up for another honest review from MrMobile.
That is what puts me off smart watches, they're not meant to last like a real time piece. I have a few Citizen watches and some Pulsar Spoons too, all of them roughly 20 years old and they all work perfectly. You can't say that about any smart watch.
Well, smartwatches are essentially smartphones in watch form factor after all, & smartwatch people are usually the kind who'd dump old tech to go after new ones every few years, instead of buying things that could easily last over a decade.
@@FalconWindblader True but I don't think the smart watch market will ever take over the watch watch market.
@@righthandofdoom77 The watch market ain't going anywhere alright. the smartwatch industry is just too goddamn different to truly appeal to the existing conventional watch market.
Awesome, honest, well made review. You are a gem.
I'm still waiting for fossil to implement qi wireless charging instead of that proprietary charger.
Big same
I remember gen 3 Fossils had wireless charging, then they replaced it with the infamous back ring design since gen 4. Still wondering why.
Yeah me too if they include it ,everyone will go crazy
@@jwhisky4128 NANI???But yeah, why???🧐🧐
Brilliant review as always Mr Mobile
Wow, this was really a top-notch review. You really hit the nail on the head about it being just another stock WearOS watch. They should've at least tweaked the UI some like the OPPO Watch did.
Gotta say, though, despite not having any inclination to buy it, for me this is probably the best looking smartwatch I've seen to date.
My over 5 year old Gear S2 still runs fine. Only the battery got a bit weaker over the years. But I still upgraded to a Galaxy Watch3 last year.
My Gear S2 Classic also seems to have held up well. The battery hasn't degraded as much as I expected it to.
That said, the band pin came loose yet again and I just haven't found a want to go back to it. I just stick to my analogue watch.
Nice job Michael. Looking forward to more smart watch videos...this might be the year I breakdown and buy a Smart Watch. Btw, Happy New Year!!!!
You should take a look at the xiaomi mi watch, granted, it's China only, but it has practically everything you always say a smart watch needs, it has the crown, 2 day battery life, 1gb ram, AMOLED display, exclusive watch faces, esim for calling and messaging , and it costs around 120 us dollars, it's insane value, I ordered mine and with a few tweaks it has been undoubtedly become my favorite wear os watch ⌚. Just make a special episode or something you won't regret trying it
The casing on this watch is Fossil Hybrid HR FB-01 with some slight modifications. They had to adapt it for use with the OLED screen and other Wear OS-compatible components (e.g. the rotating crown is new), but I think it's 100% made by Fossil, they just slap some Citizen branding on it.
I got the Garrett HR for I think 125 bucks, definitely money well spent. I think the Citizen watch is literally the exact same watch, case and all, just with the bezel and buttons replaced.
Superb, thanks M. Have a lovely day. 100% support your review.
Of course Michael got the LCARS warchface :)
When I saw it, I immediately thought of him haha
Michael Awesome! Video and I like many different types of timepieces and love that you still have yours. Thanks for sharing Deb👌✌
Citizen kinda following LG's pattern of overpricing smartwatches ( LG Watch W7) 2018 with underwhelming internals. It makes it easy to pick cheaper alternatives with similar internals...great review!
Couldn't agree more. I have several Citizen watches. I LOVE them. Their ECODrive technology has kept them running for over 15 years, without a battery replacement. Granted I have had 3 Apple Watches in the past 5 years, I still wear my Citizen timepeaces to formal events or strenuous activities that might damage the more sensitive Apple Watch. There's definitely something beyond monetary value attached to my faithful Citizen watches.
Exciting! Love your videos Commander Fisher!
As the owner of a 18 year old Citizen watch myself...its been laying on my nightstand next to a 1 year old Citizen as well as a 14 yo Tissot ever since I got my Galaxy Watch 3 Titanium in October.
This brand is familiar to me since my childhood
Another great review. Really hits home with me as I'm a watch collector mainly Seiko but all Automatics
Wow, I wore at Citizen Watch to my prom too... Nice. Great video!!!
Same.
Production values of Mr.Mobile Videos are just staggering
Excellent points in your review.
"so, imagine my face when what I got was four fairly forgettable faces"
*All around me are familiar faces*
Dang that Navisail is beautiful, I think they should build a hybrid watch using that as a starting point
Damn imagine if Rolex and other traditional luxury watch brands partners- up with Apple and release their own smartwatch lol
A Rolex Apple Watch.... 🤔
Apple's prices, as well as Rolex's are inflated enough, don't give them ideas
@@TechDove clearly you don't remember the $17,000 Apple watch 😆

Thanks for the review. I have a beautiful Citizen Promaster watch that I have owned since 1999. I have needed to replace the battery every couple years but it is still the gold standard that I have judged all watches. I have many other watches including an Apple Watch series 1 and would love to have another smartwatch but think I will pass this one after watching the review.

Everything else in the world is worth putting that shit show Discovery on pause LOL 😂
I have loved this season of Discovery, even with some of the flaws in the episodes.
@@varisht4 but how? Watch The Expanse instead.
Love the great stories that come with an equally great tech vid, cheers to 2021!
I think the problem with all tech is currently the non-standard parts. 10 years down the line you can't buy a Li-Ion battery of the same size since it's not standard. Similarly for watch components... And the software which needs to be tightly optimised to make a lot more compelling experience that is smoother and less draining on the battery.
Everything seems great but that soc thought. If the had the 4100 then imo it would be worth the money.
I'd agree if it packed the 4100 -- *and* some better-crafted Citizen watchfaces/custom apps. As it stands, the similarities to the $179 Garrett HR are just too strong to justify the asking price.
@@TheMrMobile that is definitely true but I am excited for the 2021 watches with the 4100 soc and you reviewing them.
So wait for the new soc great to hear kinda wanted one but I'm hesitant great to hear this review

Looks like some small squid
It’s a Jellyfish Mood lamp you can find them online. They don’t cost a lot and look cool.
Yep. This one is from Hammacher Schlemmer.
That's why I still use Galaxy watches. The Gear 1, S, Neo, Neo 2, S2, and 2 S3 all still working to this day.
I like that fact that you are a citizen fan you know good watches
The last nail of the coffin, you nail it.
@4:21 This is my main gripe with any android wear smartwatch. These crappy magnetic charging pins always start to rust after 6 months and after that, charging eventually becomes impossible. The standard charging method should be wireless as found on samsungs or apples smartwatches. Other than that i totally agree with the review. It is disappointing to see the low effort citizen put in this smartwatch. It seems like watch makers don't understand what makes a great smartwatch. They think they are innovative just for the fact that there is a smartwatch with their branding on it.
Yeah agreed 💯
Yes, that's what I wanted from you. Keep more review of brand like this in your playlist and appreciate this kind of product rather than reviewing over priced product like apple headphone.
Love these smart watch videos! As a channel that focuses on apple watch, it's great to see the competition that we have as it only makes companies work harder to compete!
I have the S2 active; it's been a great watch, especially for my job.
The production quality of Mr Mobile videos remind me of Discovery Channel shows from the 2000s. It doesn't feel like a typical UA-cam video, even the high quality ones. It has legitimate TV show quality production.
As someone who grew up on Discovery shows of the late 90s, I'm genuinely honored by this comment. Thank you very much.
Man OCD kicks in everytime i see his new video notifications.
I enjoy your videos. Ice been wanting a smartwatch for a long time, there's so many watches that look the same, am glad you pointed that out. Also a huge fan of citizen as well. This was disappointing to see what citizen put out.
You should review some full android watches like the zeblaze thor 6, you’ll love em !

Amazing accomplishment. Something to tell the grandkids about for sure.

Good work. I prefer heirloom watches not e watches. My current citizen watch has been running flawlessly for almost 10 years without a single adjustment and stays within 10 seconds of official time. Why do wearable first go to the watch? Better a wristband or a belt!
Thank you for doing this review
My first "adult" watch is a Citizen, too. Still wearing it to this day. 15 years and counting

unfortunately I cannot share your disappointment and $200 is nothing for a smart-watch!
pretty clever construction!
Well done Citizen! ; ),
i hope citizen sees this.. i love their brand too..

Excellent review, I'm so glad someone warned me.
Michael is the one of 2 UA-camr(Other being David from TheUnlockr) who i can trust with smart watches. Looking forward for more SD4100 Smartwatches but do you think it's worth buying a SD3100 watch at a discounted(or lower than expected SD4100) price?? Finally trying to get into smartwatch game this year
I have a small collection of Citizen watches I keep going back to when I get tired of charging my smartwatch.
The $200 extra is for the brand name. Citizen is a premium brand after all.
A big cost driver for watches is the manufacturing quality (and the brand). I wonder if that additional cost is worth it for a smartwatch which is discarded within 3 years. And we're all used to the specs being the cost driver for tech instead of the build quality for that same reason
Fantastic review...I’m a huge Citizen fan and since I need to replace my Garmin Fenix 3 and I really don’t use most of the Garmin features, I was going to order the CZ...but your review put into perspective for me “...just another Google watch in disguise”. It’s a shame that Citizen didn’t do more to set this watch apart with both software and hardware. Hopefully they’ll see they missed the mark and redeem themselves if they want to enter the Smartwatch market.
The battery life is the biggest detractor from smart watches in my opinion. I've owned a few Wear OS watches, but the one I keep coming back to is the one that has 4 day battery life (Sony Smartwatch 3).
wish I knew what watch face and were to find in at the 2:40 mark of the video. It looks nice :) Woot dropped the price to $96 a week or so back so figured at that price would give it a go. Google was supposed to drop support for Google Assist though, unless I am doing it wrong, I can speak questions and it is replying. Thanks for the review
Great and human review.... thank you for sharing those photos.
I got tired of half backed smart watches. I went back to my seiko automatic. The mechanical tics, the never need for batteries or recharge and the durability of decades to come.
I've had Motorola's and Skagen's offerings in full smart and hybrid watches. It was a fun ride, but until software and battery life get their pieces together I don't see myself buying another piece of e-waste.
Especially once the watch lose support and the battery that is hard to find/ hard to replace is dead, you got yourself a nice dummy paper weight.
To see another brand jump into this one shell fits all smart watch is sad and disappointing. Yet I very much still appreciate Fossil's non-smart offerings and great warranty support.
They all seem to have full backs to me.
I understand your pain. I'm a watch guy too and I would've been pissed if Omega sold me a fossil smart watch disguised as a Seamaster
Very good review as always. Kinds of disappointing to see citizen watch not standing out form the others.
