    I used your formula for my gesso. Works great. I add it to canvas boards because it smooths out the bumpiness. Add a layer of gesso, sand..add another layer. Makes agreat painting surface. Thanks

      Great I wonder nick if you could use dabs in it to give a real rough texture I recommend children's play sand as it's been cleaned let me know how you get in if you try it

    Thank you so much. Now I can make my own. I had white gesso I got from my art class and I needed it to be black but they're cheap as hell so I added black paint to it so now I know it'll work that way also. I have saved all your videos on how to make each type of gesso. And I've subbed. Thanks.

      +CLIVE5ART I just had to tell you I have he same art picture as in your background. I made it my first week in art class. I swore the teacher designed it herself but apparently not. I love the picture I made one for my sister too. It's the one with the Ambre sunset of yellows orange, red and black with the white poppies with black paint splatter stems and the black bird in the sky. Just thought it was cool that I noticed it on your wall also.

    Yes Clive. I have used talcum powder before, (The pound shop) and 'whiting'. I have gallons of woodwork glue! Looking forward to the experiment. I used to use pink, but I am going to try tonalist painting, so need a dark primer. All the best. Like and subscribed. John in Brum.

    I made black gesso and used acrylic 'lamp black" (I happened to have a LOT of it - I thought I was ordering one container and it turned out to be three!) WOW is it black - even in the container. Well, it's a charcoal gray but you see what I'm saying. Once dry it's blackboard black. BTW - I haven't been happy using mica in my gesso. The 'glitter' quality shows through to one degree or another. This is particularly true of the clear gesso. If I want that - I add some to a small amount before I start my project.

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  7 років тому

      I guess the mica my be different I don't get that problem I may be changing the mix

    Interesting! You said you can thin down with more water or glue, you didn't mention adding more paint, is there any reason, I would think that makes for a darker colour without inks?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  9 років тому

      You can add more paint if you wish be careful tho if your using latex emulsion as it should be thinned to limit any problems give it a try tho all I show is what works for me please let me know how you get on

      Suellyn Vandesande elmers glue Michels has several types but check with a school supply store. Teachers need large volumes of glue I'd check out the staples price but back to school sales are a great source for school glue less than a buck for 500ml

    Hi! Love your videos and your accent! You mention Mica? What is mica ( is it sand?)and how much do you add to the CC an talc mix. Is it necessary? I make your white gesso but that recipe only uses Calcium carbonate. Help!

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  5 років тому

      Its basically marble dust

    Hi! Clive,
    Please let me know in what proportion we should mix calcium carbonate, talc & micra to get the perfect mixture.

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  9 років тому +1

      It's down to personal preference to be honest depends how much grab you want I tend to mix equal parts if you want a bit more grad add a little more CC

    Answering about using sand. I've tried drywall compound to raise areas on a gessoed Masonite surface for graffiti art painting. Yeah..your Gesso is a good base for anything, I think. An artist I knew long ago named Dimitri Perdikidus(spelling may not be correct) in Spain used marbel dust. If you google images..Dimitri Perdikidus..you will see his work.

    Hi Clive, I was wondering what the difference is between mica powder and marble powder! Some use the marble powder! And also can you give me the ratio/ parts of the three powders you use in your concoction! Please in cups, ounces, I'm gram illiterate! 😳😳😳I was considering buying yours but I am in the US and even though your price is very reasonable, I'm afraid the shipping will make it cost prohibitive???? Let me know if I'm wrong! Thank you for all your wonderful videos. I enjoy all of them!

    CLIVE5ART, I've started watching the 1st season of Bob Ross. The 1st show he shows his tools. He hadn't had his own brand of tools yet it seems at the start. He shows a 2 1/2 inch hardware looking natural bristle brush. He says they are natural bristles. I think the 2nd or 3rd show he says that he covered the canvas with "FLAT BLACK ACRYLIC PAINT," no mention of Gesso. I'm headed to the hardware store tomorrow to check the price of a gallon of "FLAT BLACK ACRYLIC PAINT," before I try to make my own.

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  5 років тому

      Yes he just used DIY brushes

    sometimes i've used plain, cheap craft paint in place of gesso... texturally it feels the same. what's the difference?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  7 років тому +1

      Just the texture of the paint gesso has more tooth for the paint to grab too but what ever works is fine by me

    Is it okay to mix black paint with Black ink for a darker shade of Black? If so, what should the ratio be of Ink: Paint?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  7 років тому +1

      You can if you wish ratios tho minimum amounts you need to do some tests to see what works

      CLIVE5ART Thank you! That Black in is SUPER DARK, and, yes it doesn't mix like the black acrylic paint. I'm going to use may by 5 -10 grams after I mix in the 140g of black paint.

    Did I miss something? What is the Calcium carbonate to Talc ratio?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  7 років тому +3

      It's 50/50 if you want a rough texture use 20 talc to 80 cc

    Why not place raw power pigment into mixture?
    Then you will get professional grade acrylic paint, right?
    What is the difference between gesso and acrylic paint?
    Lets say W@N acrylic paint. What is that paint? I know, oil paint is pigment suspended in linseed or flaxseed oil. Water paint is pigment suspended in gum Arabic. Where can one buy gum Arabic? Is the power in watercolor finer than oil paint? It seems to me these are holy cows of the trade no one wants to talk about because someone down the line is making mega bucks! A 37mil cobalt violet artists oil w@N. You know what that cost?

    • @CLIVE5ART
      @CLIVE5ART  6 років тому

      Cost is the main reason as pigment is very expensive it’s better to use premix as gesso is just a primer.
      Acrylic paints has several additives from fillers to pigment resin retarders and thickening agents these all vary from manufacturers
      Oil paint use all sorts of oil correct walnut oil, linseed, even rapeseed
      Watercolour is pigment and Arabic yes which is a gum this can be bought as a fluid or resin from eBay or good paint companies
      All pigment is the same some differ but mainly most can be used across the paints mediums the main area the the grinding processes used during manufacturing depending on the grades required
      Hope this helps

    • @etienne7774
      @etienne7774 6 років тому

      CLIVE5ART Thanks. This explains why there are no videos where anyone makes acrylic paints from scratch. They all start off with acrylic binder that no one knows what it is. Unlike making your own oil paint! Jackson Pollock painted on raw canvas primed I think only with rabbit skin glue, will your clear gesso give same results. Then you can see the natural colour of the canvas. Is oil paint more flexible than acrylic paint? And alkyd paints. Solvent based paints that you can clean with water that is not as bad for the environment?
      CY Twombly drew with crayon on canvas. How did he seal it, for crayon will come off?
