I actually used corn starch. I didn't like the baby powder that people suggested, and not crazy about chalk. I had some corn starch that was past it's freshness date and that worked wonderfully!
CLIVE5ART I wholeheartedly agree, you've obviously spent much time and effort to have the breadth and depth of knowledge you have. You explain things without pretention and in a clear easy to grasp way that's a real treat for a 'layperson' like me. Thank you.
Just made my first batch of Gesso using your powder and reciepe Clive. Goes on like cream - very nice. Just waiting for 2nd coat to dry so I can get down to the serious business of painting. For anyone who hasn't tried it, Clives Gesso powder is good stuff!!
Just saved me a few quid I can airbush this, it makes a good model primer and if thickened a good primer/filler on plastic model kits. It sands well and takes airbrushed acrylics very well. I was paying £7 to £12 for 12/15ml of primer/filler primer from the manufacturers. Thanks for the video m8. I have subscribed and will browse thanks again.
I was just about to buy some clear gesso when I thought "I wonder..." and found your tutorial. THANK YOU. You have saved my pennies and another huge telling off from my old man. Big Hugs.
I've seen videos that artist just use dollar store baby powder, elmers glue clear or white, and water. It works well and you can make it thicker or thinner to your needs.
I really like your videos Clive but I wish everything wasn't engrams because I live in California and it's hard for me to figure out what the difference is thank you for all your secret recipe I'm so lucky to have found your UA-cam channel
Oh I loved the ketchup squeezy bottle idea - what a fantastic idea!! I'm going to start making my own gesso from now on after watching your videos - and will be eating ketchup with every meal so i can get the bottle empty! Thanks so much for your video .
Helen Lowe i save all sauce bottles, grate for having mixes for pouring and all kind of crafts..I actually save all containers and even paper from packaging.always reuse them atleast as pallet where mix paints before throwing out, instead of tear away palette paper as example 😉
Thank you Clive for this wonderful video. Clive please share how you make glazing medium. Glazing medium is very expensive in India because it is imported.
I'm new at painting and love using alcohol inks to paint. I tried on canvas, not knowing that I had to prime the canvas...it looks great but I think I should have used Gesso to prime the canvas before I painted and I don't know if I need to set the painting with something else after I'm done. Can you help?
Great stuff. Thank you,Clive. I definitely want to be able to make my own Gesso, and, some liquid clear. When I learned art years ago,we didn't have all these fancy things, and, yes, the expense is a bit daunting,and,off-putting,so I would like to follow up on what you do. Thank you for sharing your hints, and, advice.
I just came upon your homemade mixtures and THANK YOU!!!! Sincerely, you are absolutely right when you talk about the cost of things. From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!! 👍❤👍❤ As a beginner, I want to learn and become better (much better), without spending a fortune. This isn't the first time that your advice has been incredibly helpful. Thank you yet again!! Continued success!!
Hello, thank you so much, this is brilliant! I know this is one of your older videos but, I was looking for a video teaching how to make homemade clear gesso, and I'm so glad I've found you! I've already just subscribed, and hit the bell for notifications. You seem like a really nice man, and I like you a lot! I'm almost 50 years old, and I've recently been trying out my hand at a few different art mediums. Somehow, I really didn't ever learn about art in school, I wish I had. I used crayons in cheap coloring books as a kid, and that's about it. I've always sort of secretly longed to be an artist. I did as a kid, and an adult try to draw every once in a while but, I'm definitely not a natural. I am finally learning about art through youtube videos. Drawing and all art will need to be a skill that I'll have to develop over time through learning, and much practice. I'm disabled, and no longer have a job, so I have loads of time. Unfortunately, I have very little income, although I have been purchasing small amounts of art supplies. So, I do have bits and bobs, which I'm quite grateful for. I live in the Pacific Northwest; Washington State, USA. And here we have this real popular thing (it may be popular in other areas, I'm not sure). We have this thing called, "Vancouver Rocks"...people paint on, mainly flat stones and hide them for others to find. Many of the stones are gorgeous works of art. People mostly use acrylic paints and spray them with a clear waterproof sealer. The children in my apartment community spent a lot of time this last spring and summer (which here, is quite short, only about 4 to 5 months of playing outdoors weather)...they spent a lot of time hunting for these rocks which gave them joyful delight when they found one, especially a "good one". They all had their own treasure finds that they carried around with them every day. The children also paint and hide the rocks, which are mostly what they would find. I don't think there are any adults or older kids painting and hiding rocks in our little community. The "good ones" that they had found were generally found when they went on outings with their parents. I like to sit outside on a blanket when the weather is nice, and the children spend time with me talking, and also sharing their rocks, and stories with me, which I adore! I checked youtube, and found that there were indeed videos teaching how to paint rocks. I believed I would be capable of painting some at least decently pretty stones. I decided I really wanted to do this for the kids. I began searching around for flatish stones, or otherwise good looking specimens. For instance, I found one that looks very much like a shark, and could stand alone, looking like it was coming out of water, and it has sort of cracks and details, like a shark...especially the mouth. Anyway, I was able to buy an inexpensive set of 24 small tubes of acrylic paint, and 2 ounces of both black and white. I then got some tools to apply the paint, and finally the spray to seal them. By the time I had all my supplies ready the weather had changed, and it began raining. We get a whole lot of rain here, actually about 35-45 inches per year and most of that is in the fall. Then it is mostly just cold, until sometime in the spring. Children generally spend time playing outside between the months of May-September. Now, I have everything needed to paint the rocks, but, sort of lost motivation for that (until it gets closer to spring time, probably I'll start working on those within the next 2 months). Meanwhile, I'm beginning to learn to draw. I haven't gotten very far, but I have nearly completed one piece, that I am about to frame and give to my adult son. I did this with the soft core wax based Prismacolor Premier Pencils. I was able to buy the set of 72 colored pencils. Which, I'm still learning how to use, and have done just this one project with. I've also recently purchased several "adult coloring books". There are many videos on adult coloring books, and people are coloring beautiful works, and even framing them. I'm hoping to learn to become good at this. I'm planning to use my wax based colored pencils for this, and I am expecting a delivery tomorrow of a set of 72 watercolor pencils I've ordered. Which has brought me to wanting to try using clear gesso on the coloring pages. I've seen other colorists do this on youtube videos. I haven't got enough money to purchase gesso now. I'll have to wait until next month...26 more days exactly. That's what led me to this video :-) Unfortunately, I've only got access to the glue, and the water. I haven't got any talc, or baby powder. I'm wondering if maybe cornstarch would work for this??? Or, I've got baking soda (NaHCO3, aka sodium bicarbonate), and I also have sodium hydroxide ( NaOH or HNaO...Sodium hydroxide is very corrosive. It is generally used as a solid or a 50% solution. Other common names include caustic soda and lye. Sodium hydroxide is used to manufacture soaps, rayon, paper, explosives, dyestuffs, and petroleum products.). I use it to make soap. So I have corn starch, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium hydroxide. I also have white crafters acrylic paint, which is pretty runny. Do you think I have anything that will produce gesso? I may have to just wait the 26 days, and buy more supplies. But, I figured it couldn't hurt to ask :-) Right? I hope you see my post! Thank You, Very Much!
Talc, baby powder, baking powder can work what a fantastic comment it’s easier for you to email me as I’m limited to my response here contact Clive5art@yahoo.co.uk
Hi Clive, I'm trying to create a homemade cracking medium with white cement, pvc glue and acrylic paint. I've been trying different ratios but what would you recommend?
Thank you from Alberta, Canada, your instructions are excellent..just finishing my first painting from one of your lessons...can't wait to start my next one!!!
Hi Clive. Which gesso do you prefer for acrilic painting white or clear ? And do you think I can paint on clear gesso primed carboard or poster board? And at least how many gram paper do you recomend for acrilic painting? Gretings from Slovenia 😀.
Skye I did notice that it settles a lot so shake it well before use I'm working on a way to thicken it up but its ok to use like it is it's just thin I'm going to do some more research in the thickening agents
When you have a big family you learn to be thrifty. Thank you very much for this tutorial. I can't wait to check out your others. I see a long and artistic relationship in our future, lol.
Hi Clive, great video! What’s the proportion of the blend of mica/Ca carbonate and is it baby powder? I am wondering if I can use a regular immersion blender or a milk foamer for the blending part? 🤔
Thank you Clive for the wonderful tutorial. I would like to know the formula for the gesso powder. Are the ingredients equal parts of Calcium Carbonate, Talc Power, and Mica powder. I watched the video several times and did not get the formula for this mix. Thank you.
Wow, I had no idea, I bought it as garden fortified to help my fruit trees grow healthy, they say it's the same as crushed eggshells ....thnks for the heads up!
Thank you for teaching how to make those. I'm wondering how the chalk-based gesso turned out "clear" transparent. Should gesso be diluted before application?
Hey Clive I’m about to use a crackle medium. But the crackle medium only craze when acrylic paint is added on the dried crackle varnish, but I want a “transparent acrylic” just to make the crackle transparent on top of a finished painting and later use a dark wax to fill the cracks to make it look more antique. Do you think a clear gesso would do the job and act like a “transparent acrylic”? Great channel mate🙌🙌
Hi Clive, Thanks for sharing. Clear gesso for me is transparent gesso. Can you perhaps tell me what happens if i remove the chalk and water, so to use plain PVA as gesso? You probably tell me that i need to add water to create the PVA glue, but i found out that white hobby glue is identical to PVA glue. And this white hobby glue is soo cheap and soo thin, it probably contains allot of water already. So in this case, can i use the hobby glue as transparent gesso? Thanks in advance.
+Dippo6905 mmm this is clear gesso and transparent when dry.. if you remove the water and chalk you just have pva glue this should not be used neat as a glaze it peels. gesso have to have a key for other paints or drawing materials to bind too thats why the chalk is there to ask as a rough key hope that's ok clive
Thank you for showing ways to save money while still being able to enjoy painting.
Your welcome
I love your show and learning to save lots of money.
Thank you
I actually used corn starch. I didn't like the baby powder that people suggested, and not crazy about chalk. I had some corn starch that was past it's freshness date and that worked wonderfully!

Hi Clive. Which gesso do you prefer for acrilic painting white or clear ? And do you think I can paint on clear gesso primed carboard or poster board? And at least how many gram paper do you recomend for acrilic painting? Gretings from Slovenia 😀.

Thanks Clive for an excellent video presentation.Saw a small container of gesso for $23.00 USD recently 12/23/17.
It’s expensive stuff for what it is chalk and paint really
Your man tool! Thanks for sharing your recipes with us. :-)
Skye I did notice that it settles a lot so shake it well before use I'm working on a way to thicken it up but its ok to use like it is it's just thin I'm going to do some more research in the thickening agents

Thank you for great ideas
Hi Clive, great video! What’s the proportion of the blend of mica/Ca carbonate and is it baby powder? I am wondering if I can use a regular immersion blender or a milk foamer for the blending part? 🤔
Can we use it under gouache?
Does it have to be the one that’s bleached?
Hi clive Could you use this with alcohol markers without it ruining the nibs? Some Gesso is so rough it spoils the nibs. x
Depends on the amount of chalk used you can grind the chalk to a fine powder that may work
Thanks for sharing !!!! I don’t have a paint mixer. What else, if anything, can I use to mix this ?? I just subscribed !!!
Thank you Clive for the wonderful tutorial. I would like to know the formula for the gesso powder. Are the ingredients equal parts of Calcium Carbonate, Talc Power, and Mica powder. I watched the video several times and did not get the formula for this mix. Thank you.
The best thing really is to just use cc I have change the mix since filming
Thanks a ton....u were so accurate and thanks for detailed video...will be really useful for my future paintings
Hi, I have a huge bag of pulverized lime that looks very chalky. Do you think I could use that with the glue/water mixture? Thank you!
Wow, I had no idea, I bought it as garden fortified to help my fruit trees grow healthy, they say it's the same as crushed eggshells ....thnks for the heads up!
Thank you so much Clive for sharing these valuable tips with us. I am just a beginner but am learning a lot from you.
Great to know keep up the good work
Thank you for teaching how to make those. I'm wondering how the chalk-based gesso turned out "clear" transparent. Should gesso be diluted before application?
This is a great idail
Thanks for the video and I love you accent!
+Jeanie Gregory thank you

Thank you and a merry Xmas happy new year to you and you family

Is this home-made Gesso good for oil painting too?
Do you need to sand it after putting gesso or you can start painting immediately?
You can if you wish or leave as is
Thank you so much for sharing this!!
Thank you so much
Hi Clive, Thanks for sharing. Clear gesso for me is transparent gesso. Can you perhaps tell me what happens if i remove the chalk and water, so to use plain PVA as gesso? gesso have to have a key for other paints or drawing materials to bind too thats why the chalk is there to ask as a rough key
hope that's ok clive
+CLIVE5ART The problem is probably the chalk i am using. I am gonna do a few tests to see what goes wrong. Thanks for the info.
Brilliant ❤️
I am from Canada, way to go !!!
Clive I love your videos. I need a little help. What ratio should my mica and talk powder be to the calcium carbonate?
It should be listed in the descriptions of the video
Hi Clive! Thank you very much! Your videos are interesting and instructiv.
Thank you I'm glad your enjoying the channel and the lessons
Clive
