They had to live in a world where the prophet Duncan didn’t yet spread the word of thinning paints. It was a hostile world for models when the threat of horrifically thick coats can manifest at any time. Thanks for watching!
To add to #3: these models are meant to be painted and often you have to paint a lot of them so the more detailed they are the harder they are to paint for new painters and the more time they take to paint. To me it feels like every new model is designed to be a display piece first and a war game piece second which is a complete pain when you are trying to paint an entire army and really really intimidating when you are a new painter. Even space marines the poster boys of "easy starter army" have gotten a lot more detailed recently. Also my hot take, what some people call detail I call visual noise and cluttered design. Readability should be more emphasized in model design than it currently is.
Ya I really feel this with the cadians. Even on a display level I sometimes find the extra details to take away from the model as a whole. Like you said the details can just become visual noise and breaking up strong designs with them can hurt the overall composition. Back to cadians the straps, trinkets, and other little design bits are cool in theory. But in reality I feel they just break up the guard’s simple but powerful design, especially when they’re massed up. The colors of these details hurt readability like you said. Thanks for watching!
The best advice I got was, "Look at the your finished models from an arm length. If it looks fine, it's battle ready. You are the only person who will know the mistakes and shortcuts. You're not out to win a Golden Goblin on the tabletop."
Totally fair! I think the big guns are probably what I miss most, I was dissapointed that the desolators had weightless poses despite having some of the biggest guns. Thanks for watching!
I hope that as time goes on, and we get new models, they incorporate details from their army of origin. And not these overpriced "upgrade" kits that are sold separately. Fuckin hate those.
One good thing with old models is how durable they are. No 100-part messes of spindly bits here, just 3 chunky nuggets of plastic, inexorably conjoined by enough glue to lather an elephant into an indestructible monolith of hobby might that will stand for an eternity against the dark beneath half an inch of brightly coloured paint. I think the poses are one of the stronger points of modern minis, but I do find the overly dynamic ones to be a bit immersion breaking. Its like imagining Ragnar Blackmane in his crazy jumping pose hovering across the table, frozen in time and thus paradoxically less dynamic than a mini with a more neutral pose.
They're very durable. I had a RTB01 space marine on my bed, and I accidentally dropped a knife while walking by, so to prevent my fall is grabbed onto my bed as hard as I could. Bad news, I'm a little under 200 pounds and the RTB01 broke in half, good news, he broke in half at his waist, so the plastic didn't actually break, and I caught my fall. Even after 43 (circa 2024) years the model still holds firm.
Hope everyone enjoys this one! Its a bit different than my usual stuff so let me know what you think. Also let me know what kind of minis you prefer! Thank you everyone
Great discussion and cool explanation on your opinions with fun and love for the hobby! You’re always enjoyable to watch, and I think adding excitement and love in for something is always more constructive than dogging on what you don’t like, which this achieve brilliantly 😊
As The Bard once said, the task of a tabletop gaming model is primarily to act as a playing piece that has to be recognisable at range. Detail can be a huge obstacle to this, especially when it's the element that seems to be considered the most important in the case of some miniatures.
Absolutely agreeing on the issue! For me it kinda feels like GW tend to lose 'intent' on a model nowadays and just replace it with a mess of details. Just compare old Devastators to modern Desolators - with the former, the 'big guy hauling a big gun' idea is hammered into your eyes with a literal visual warhammer, while with the latter it feels like the designers were afraid of leaning into any one particular concept so they just stuck somewhere in the awkward middle like an AI painting. Keep up the great work, mate, spitting the truth of silly plastic soldiers!
on the topic of simplicity: As someone who has no experience in painting minies but plays with the thought of one day trying out painting some salamanders, those intricate models look intimidating as hell. So simplicity also is more newbie friendly I d say.
At least in my experience the bigger “intimidating” models are a lot easier to paint. Like I’m painting a Mortarion right now, very big and complex, and I just paint what I want. Trying to make a cool moth-brown grey white blend right now. No one is gonna tell on you for painting a model over a long period of time. If it looks cool, paint it if you want. The complexity will work itself out if you put in the time to make it look good.
I don't dismiss taking time to paint your shit to look good, but my 2000 point 3rd edition Guard Army could probably be completely redone in the time it took for the paint to dry. Maybe I'm simping Cadia one day, boom done. Hell, maybe I want all of them to have >:( faces. (Who am I kidding they already do).
Their facial details are bigger so they're more observable on a tabletop, the model can be enjoyed from a distance, you can see what expression they're making or what pose they're in really easily, which helps with fantasy and sci fi narratives. Typically "true scale" minis are also historical minis, so usually feature much larger armies where that sort of detail is less important due to the sheer amount of models on the table. Seems to be GW is subtly hinting they want games to have many more models
The issue I see with this is that they also insist on cramming an obscene amount of detail on each new mini. Sure it’s impressive from a technical perspective, but man is it a chore to paint every model’s 20 pouches and fanny pack.
I love the 8th edition Gravis captain, because he was my first model, and at the end of the day, I know he’s not the coolest, but he’s got the most attached to him for me, and that’s what counts
I feel the same in case of Space Marines. Old model had that nice thing. Can't call it by name, but it feels diffrently. Sitll feels wierd when I see the new primaris models and the old models in my Dawn of War save.
Ya along with the things I listed here, there’s a certain allure to old models I can’t fully describe. Just love that old aesthetic, thanks for watching!
Binging all your videos, I’ve gotta say I love your guardsman character. He’s just a happy lil guy with the videos topic appearing around him, and I love how he subtly changes in some videos
The 9th Edition Eldar Warlocks do look great, but there's something fundamentally masterful about the 1st Edition Eldar Warlock. I don't know how they managed to make the perfect version of a Space Elf Wizard on the first try, but by Jove, they sure did.
The hunkering down pose for the kasrkins was actually my favorite pose and the only reason I got the kit , it looks like a buttery stride , I think it's sick lmao

Migel Angelo`s david has those proportions because its meant to be seen from ground level so perspective will shrink those big features like the head or hands. Its a real testament to the genius of an artist.
One thing you didn't mention is that old guard is objectively superior because they fixed bayonets! STRAIGHT SILVER! DO YOU WANT TO LIVE FOREVER?! *awesome guitar solo noises*
The Silohette is more identifiable in Oldhammer. However, I like both. I think Heresy does an EXCELLENT JOB of modernising the silohettes. It's why I like the First Born Marines, even in 40k. I don't care if they are pants compared to Primaris (that comes from Marine Range Bloat). They are identifiable from a distance.
Black templars and Dark angels had some pretty nice updates (still like the old) The Blood Angels one was mixed, mostly a dissapointment, especially the Sanguinary guard and Death company.
Too many people say they prefer primaris marines to firstborn because of the better proportions and scale, not realizing that the discussion was always about the inherent design and art direction of the models. Proportions and scale all being equal, the old marines look less soulless and actually have personality compared to just giving an intercessor with their boring helmets and ugly flared kneepads a different gun and calling that “variety”. 😊
Yeah totally! When I say I like heroic scale I refer to the art direction. To me it’s like in video games where a game will have super realistic graphics but nothing else versus a game with middling graphics but fantastic art direction. I think the nature of computer modeling just makes a lot of the sculpts look homogenous. Which is technically good for something like space marine armor, but in reality it feels soulless to me. Thanks for watching!
I love this channel. The simple animations and just casual talking to the fans about any piece of content of 40k, it makes it very easy to enter and enjoy. Keep up the great work!
I never even got into 40k until late 9th edition. However after generous research of all the older editions especially 2nd and 3rd, the "old" hold a special place for me simply because of everything you speak to in this very video. Also you got a new subscriber :D
new guard are such a pain to paint, i bought the field ordnance guns, and it honestly took me longer to paint the crew, than sculpting and painting all the sandbags i added infront of the guns there is: the armor the cloth the boots the bootstrap thingies the face the goggles the gloves the belt the buckles the holsters the back canister the straps for said canister
3D print stuff, and you can have all the Chunky models and guns you want. Also, Infinite supply of MKVI Helmets. But I do agree with some older models aesthetics.
Agree with everything you said in this video, this is why as a fantasy fan I'm so happy to see old models return rather than having the whole range updated. I will add from a painting perspective having so much details on every miniature can get very tiresome, it is great for characters but I don't need every guardsman to be so unique when it is going to die on turn 1 anyway. And from a modelist perspective old miniatures were so much more easy to convert, nowadays everything is casted so this specific body goes with this specific arms and head and thats it. Something as simple as taking an arm from a kit to use on another kit already requires making cuts, using greenstuff to fill the gaps and make it look ok...
Man, your videos are really great! They are extremely fun! I don't collect minis, I'm more oriented to Action Figures, recently I found Warhammer 40K 1:18 scale articulated figures from Joy Toy. They motivate me to investigate more about Warhammer. Have you ever think of making a video about Warhammer Action Figures?
I like both old and new models. I just set up a game with my dad, where I'm borrowing half a squad of the first plastic space marines, and using them alongside some Skitarii, squats, and weird ancient terminators. I like the contrast between the different styles, the elegant AdMech, tough Space Marines, and goofy Squats. Also, Primaris helmets look like squished MKIV helmets.
You are truth. And especially on point 3, that's something all the 3D printing sculptors need to take heed of. So many are so stuffed with in my opinion unnecessary opinion because they can.
Oh yeah I couldn’t agree more. I think a lot of 3d printer sculpts are impressive just knowing the skill it took to make, but as an actual thing they fall a bit flat to me. A lot of 3d printers seem to just cram as much details as possible, but end up not translating for minis and are difficult to print. Thanks for watching!
4:46 This sculpture is actually a neat time capsule in that aspect. Large phallus' were seen as barbaric or uncivilized back in the time that sculpture was made, where smaller ones were seen as enlightened or civilized. So David there having a small lil guy is actually still an example of the sculptor exaggerating what he thought were proud manly traits.
MK7 marines are my favourite, in my eyes they had more character in the poses and the angry helmet was pure perfection… also I liked the old bolters better, especially with heavy bolter and it being belt fed from an ammo backpack
I really really really really really really really really really really like this video. I'm a heroic scale apologist and a lot of what you said I agree with iev Dynamic exaggerated poses glance roughly what a model does and what is good at. You're a catechin / Jackal comparison with spot on
This is why I like AoS models so much. They take the fantastic new technology and continue with the silliness and goofy OTT designs that I’ve always liked. They look like fantasy models, just better, without compromising on absurdity. One of the new lines is literally bdsm elves riding turtles and sharks and stuff and I love it
As a krieger, i will die with you on the hill that saying korps wrong is funny. it absolutely is. on a more serious note, i think a lot of the problem with modern 40k posing comes from the fact that each pose can be slightly modified in most cases. that drunk Kasrkin guy is a good example. even just turning his head or switching the plasma for a meltagun instantly changes how good or bad the pose looks.
As someone who only started making and painting 40K with the 9th Edition starter box (10th dropped immediately afterwards, but we won’t talk about that), I will say that you’re right and the Mark VII helmet is absolutely the coolest Space Marine helmet
The older models' sole problem in the pictures provided is their painting. With a more precise and detailed painting, these already charming lads and lasses are a 10/10
This is a bit besides the point, but recently I was chatting with a mate about our favorite space marine helmets. He really likes the Primaris helmet and argued that it made them scarier because it was more dehumanizing. My argument was that dehumaizing only works on humans. The Imperium is fighting aliens and unkowable horrors. The angry eye lenses and the giant screaming vox grill mouth looks like a horrifying screaming face. I think it makes total sense as design.
One of my favorite models of all time (and the reason I'm a filthy Eldar fan) is Eldrad Ulthran. I have fond memories of a time back when my local shop did painting contests and I was super proud of one of my Grey Knight models. I entered it into the contest, not expecting to win, and predictably did not even place in the top 5. But I still remember when they showed off this guy's Eldrad, who was the winner of the contest, and I was dumbstruck by it. His pose was/is a little stiff and his model is almost as complex to paint as some named Space Marines now, but man did that chunky little Space Elf Wizard look cool. His helmet is so impractical, but so eye catching and his staff looks more like a Native American shaker, but I had never seen a model like him before. His model is in that spot where it's getting old now and really showing some age, but I still adore the intricate and silly robes he wears, the helmet that should keep him off balance just by looking around and that strange looking staff that clearly is meant to be alien in design. I gotta be careful, though. I might start sounding like Pancreas if I simp for my favorite Eldar too hard.
I personally prefer old school guardsman over the new ones and you explained the feelings I was having that I couldn't describe! Thank you. I think when they did a redesign of the Cadian shock troop box with the upgrade sprue before the full Cadian redesign was the right direction for options without overcomplicating the design I will say, some changes (like Primaris Scale Marines and Necrons) have brought improvements to factions scale and looks.
I've started a side project proxy Death Guard army because I had some old heroic scale Marines that weren't useful for actual Space Marines. They have unironically become some of my favorite minis to use, the proportions are so much more fun and stylized, and they look appropriately wide and boxy.
On the note with Michaelangelo’s David is that its acually common in old sculptures and paintings for man stuff to be smaller because it was considered more manly and attractive at the time. Its akin to how fashion and the standard for beauty has changed over the years. If I’m mistaking this for the reason for “David” specifically I know this is a fact of at least the time leading up to the renaissance.
Great video. Keep up the amazing work. And to answer your question. Coteaz's old model was one of my favorites. They did not improve with the new one in my opinion.
seeing a video literally half a minute after launch hits different edit: I loved the video. It was great to hear your opinion on the matter even tho I don't really agree. I prefer your lore vids but this was a nice change and I'd enjoy seeing more like this every now and then in the future.
I agree so much I've started buying the old 80s and 90s dwarf minis because I love some of the clearly hand sculpted details. They also have a great example of good but not realistic since these old dwarfs have a stomach then feet like there is no space for legs
I'm given to understand David's modest size is related to smaller being better in some old cultures. Alternatively, undersizing could be an artist equivalent of lowlighting to help remove attention from what's less important
Yeah joking aside I believe that small penises were seen as more distinguished and associated with intelligence in the time. I could also imagine how a huge dong would be distracting lmao Thanks for watching!
Honestly, the silhouette of that newer Kasrkin with the Plasma Gun just reminds me of a Necron Warrior, at least from the angle that was shown. Like, the only way I'd recognize that it wasn't a Necron would be that it's a bit too chunky.
I remember madalore gaming describeing the gun size problem as “halo drift” basically they designed the guns originally to look scaled right for a massive super soilder. So in the hands of a regular guy they look big and cartoonish
+1,000,000 points for the Iron Giant reference/image at 15:00 ish. (Best old model? I’m going with the old metal Daemon Prince. Dude was too freakin’ cool. Best new? Tough but I think it’s going to be the new World Eaters Lord on bloodcrusher mount.)
Good video, I like the variety in your video line up. Plus I’m a huge Transformers fan, so best video, if not thee best you’ve produced thus far. Michael Bay is dumb btw.
Hey @krakduk , i do enjoy the opinion videos but as someone very new to the hobby ( as in started this spring) I do prefer the lore videos since its a very fun way to get more insight
I love the old Catachans, they definitely do sell "muscle" more than newer sculpts, and one examples of a similar iconic character with "unrealistic" muscles is He-Man! And yes, I'm a child of the 1980s, and I fell in love with 40k seeing 2nd edition models, and I still play with some models from that era. One favorite is my Armorcast Haruspex, which is so ridiculous everyone at my LGS is thrilled and amused whenever they see it at the table. I also still prefer the 3rd edition Hive Tyrant (honestly not a fan of the previous one though)
I REALLY REALLY REALLY like this video... style. In all seriousness I like the "rant" style videos and some of the points you made are why I like the MKIII space marine armour. It's big, intimidating, kinda goofy but I think it looks better than primaris most of the time.
I remember the first models I ever got were the oldschool Khorne berserkers around about a year or two before the refresh, best decision I ever made. I love how chunky the old school models are and the fact they're instantly recognizable from a distance. Also not to mention old school chaos doesn't have the atrocious amount of armor trim the newer models have.
Totally agree I never could find any minis that could entire give me the chills like the Mordheim or Rackham minis. Older but really better in any level in an aesthetics way
7:15 IS THAT A TRANSFOMERS REFERENCE I SEE?! lets gooooo. its nice to see another person that love transformers and WH40k. just wounding how hyped are your for TF one. also i'm new to wh40k so i don't really know much about older 40k but i 100% agree that the old poses are so much better i hope GW dose the exaggerated poses more

I agree with your point about the jackals but I think they are also cool for conveying the point of the model really well, which is to go fast and die fast, crazy berserkers. They’re all lean and zippy looking
I like how old models make it seem like their copeing with the horrors of the universe

new guard are such a pain to paint, i bought the field ordnance guns, and it honestly took me longer to paint the crew, than sculpting and painting all the sandbags i added infront of the guns
there is:
the armor
the cloth
the boots
the bootstrap thingies
the face
the goggles
the gloves
the belt
the buckles
the holsters
the back canister
the straps for said canister
3D print stuff, and you can have all the Chunky models and guns you want. Also, Infinite supply of MKVI Helmets. But I do agree with some older models aesthetics.
Thank you krak duk for being the guy who got me genuinely interested in warhammer. I’m getting my first minis in a week and I can hardly wait.
This dude has slowly become my favorite 40k channel keep up the good work
Thanks a lot! Glad you like the videos
How is this man just the best warhammer UA-cam around. Like great art and great comedy. It’s just amazing
I love the old drednought 😢 the boxnought... i wish they just rescaled it
I like both old and new models.
Great video. I’ve been binge watching your content lately. You’ve got a really fun channel, keep it up!
Great video. It's nice to hear that I'm not crazy for thinking a lot of the old models were great and some of the new ones are missing something.
4:46
This sculpture is actually a neat time capsule in that aspect. Large phallus' were seen as barbaric or uncivilized back in the time that sculpture was made, where smaller ones were seen as enlightened or civilized. So David there having a small lil guy is actually still an example of the sculptor exaggerating what he thought were proud manly traits.
I agree with both sides, its cool to see someone talking about the herioc scale in favour
You're a catechin / Jackal comparison with spot on
Plus those were the models I grew up with. I'm always going to have a soft spot for the old box of 20 Guardsman I could get for just over 30 bucks
This is why I like AoS models so much. They take the fantastic new technology and continue with the silliness and goofy OTT designs that I’ve always liked. They look like fantasy models, just better, without compromising on absurdity. One of the new lines is literally bdsm elves riding turtles and sharks and stuff and I love it
Love the video and the best looking old imperial guard model has to be the the vostroyan banner man
fucking epic
Ooh yeah he’s my favorite banner bearer. I had a chance to get him a bit back but I forgot about the bid😫
Thanks for watching!
My favorite old mini is that crouching charging Kasrkin, while my favorite new one is the Sternguard Veteran with the Mk VII helmet.
I have an old metal snikrot and it’s just about my favorite mini ever.
@@raymondharnack4160 nice! I wish I snagged that fella, such a characterful model. I was too busy collecting guard tho and didn’t have the funds😫
Definitely love the older minis. I would have never seen them if it wasn’t for this video so KEEP it uppp your content is great!
As someone who only started making and painting 40K with the 9th Edition starter box (10th dropped immediately afterwards, but we won’t talk about that), I will say that you’re right and the Mark VII helmet is absolutely the coolest Space Marine helmet
I liked the topic. I’d love to see you talk about my favourite little guys, the genestealers they do also have some guard elements.
The older models' sole problem in the pictures provided is their painting.
With a more precise and detailed painting, these already charming lads and lasses are a 10/10
Please make like a painting tutorial with everything you need, shading and stuff.
Love your channel!
I agree that older models were better at exaggerating features but I think newer tyranid models portray the whole scary bug theme better
I really really really like this style, I love your channel!!
Thank you! Glad you like it
I personally prefer old school guardsman over the new ones and you explained the feelings I was having that I couldn't describe! Thank you. I think when they did a redesign of the Cadian shock troop box with the upgrade sprue before the full Cadian redesign was the right direction for options without overcomplicating the design
I will say, some changes (like Primaris Scale Marines and Necrons) have brought improvements to factions scale and looks.
This is 10000% legit. For crying out loud, there's not a single 40k vehicle that looks like it actually works! It's art! It's fun!
KrakDuk is one, if not one of THE most entertaining 40k UA-camr
I like the new marines, but love the old guard! It's all about personal preferences 😊
I really really really really liked this video style. And the lore vids as well, I’ll watch ‘em both.
Great video. Keep up the amazing work. And to answer your question. Coteaz's old model was one of my favorites. They did not improve with the new one in my opinion.
100% agree with the defense of heroic scale! I would love to see a kind of remaster set to release with the og models using the new technology.
seeing a video literally half a minute after launch hits different
edit: I loved the video. It was great to hear your opinion on the matter even tho I don't really agree. I prefer your lore vids but this was a nice change and I'd enjoy seeing more like this every now and then in the future.
Thanks for being here so early!
@@KrakDuk It was a pleasure good sir :)
I could also imagine how a huge dong would be distracting lmao
Thanks for watching!
The reason why i fell in love with 40k in the first place was that everything was so extreme and over the top. They should look the part as well
Everyone: look! It took me 4 hours to paint this guardsman and it's still looking like a rock!
Me who painted a leman russ in 20 minutes:😅
I honestly like the newer models but I respect your opinion and do agree on some aspects
Good video, I like the variety in your video line up. Plus I’m a huge Transformers fan, so best video, if not thee best you’ve produced thus far. Michael Bay is dumb btw.
Thanks for watching! Cool to see another transformers fans here
Krak duk out here preaching
Hey @krakduk , i do enjoy the opinion videos but as someone very new to the hobby ( as in started this spring) I do prefer the lore videos since its a very fun way to get more insight
the old chaos space marine models will always have a special place in my heart
I love their zaniness, I need to get some down the line. Thanks for watching!
@@KrakDuk no problemo also keep up the good work and vids brothaaaa
Also not to mention old school chaos doesn't have the atrocious amount of armor trim the newer models have.
couldn't agree more, very well put together video!
Totally agree
I never could find any minis that could entire give me the chills like the Mordheim or Rackham minis.
Older but really better in any level in an aesthetics way
Fully agree that when talking up the minis you love shouldn’t involve talking down others
There's a reason why so many old models have become absolutely iconic while newer ones struggle to make themselves noticed.
Good stuff, keep going and try new stuff from time to time. Liked this one.
7:15 IS THAT A TRANSFOMERS REFERENCE I SEE?! lets gooooo. its nice to see another person that love transformers and WH40k. just wounding how hyped are your for TF one. also i'm new to wh40k so i don't really know much about older 40k but i 100% agree that the old poses are so much better i hope GW dose the exaggerated poses more
Shield your eyes children at 2:00 he lured us in just to make us stare at it! He even took a photo of our reactions for his twisted pleasure 🤢
My innocence is gone! Who shall marry me now? 😭 😭 😭
I agree with your point about the jackals but I think they are also cool for conveying the point of the model really well, which is to go fast and die fast, crazy berserkers. They’re all lean and zippy looking
I really, really, really, really liked this video style. :D
Fan of abstract krak duk
Scream Guardsman is awesome.
Love the video, but would love more lore too :) maybe alternate between opinions and lore videos ?
