When you get your hands on the Witch Hunters codex you'll find that that is actually a Power Stake not a walking stick: A long iron stake that immolates as it pierces the body of a psyker. Counts as a power weapon but wounds psykers on a 2+. Not too shabby
3:22 - from what I remember of this model's particulars, the terminator captain here was armed with an auxiliary grenade launcher built into his power fist.
The Terminator Captain's leaning could be compensated for by cutting him off his slot, and pinning him onto a base that slops upward slightly. Like he's trudging uphill to the edge of a cliff. That way, his pose is leveled out, but not in a way to exposes the unnatural upturn of his feet. It would seem like a natural pose.

Those old Genestealers had a long service record in the hobby! I remember buying them in the early 2000's when Tyranids got their 3rd Edition Codex and they were already old by then...
They're certainly at least very similar to the Genestealer models that came in both Space Crusade and 1st ed Space hulk, which puts them at over 30 years old.
Jay's enthusiasm helps. And old models, which are sculpted by hand, are a series of compromises. That creates a certain character that today's perfect and amazing minis do not have.
I'd be tempted to put the MJ Terminator on a raised slope, like a cliff, would both address the lean and the height of the model and make it look as though they're looming over the battlefield from their vantage point.

The terminator captain was part of the 1st metal terminator box set which came out around the time of space hulk 1st edition and the two expansions. One of the expansions had rules for the boxed set, new weapons s and characters including the captain. The weapon on the fist was a grenade launcher which he could fire down the corridors..... great fun!
Love my coincidences. I've just been painting up an old terminator Rune Priest I found in a box. It was missing its hammer but I did have a random power claw I crafted on. The whole fuss with that also inspired me to Primaris him up by extending the torso and giving him a more dynamic posture. I painted up two squads of old early-2000s metal Necromunda enforcers as classic Arbites)
Terminator caption has a grenade launcher and was first out in 1st Ed. Box had the cap, sarg, squad with flamer and assault cannon, and a psycker. The one marine you showed was also 1st out in 1 Ed in a box of 15 marines no special or heavy weapons. I had both.

I love seeing these old minis still in use - GW's had an intriguing history, I feel like whether they were bought new way back then or sourced from ebay now, having a few retro minis in an army shows appreciation of the weird journey 40k's been on. When I decided to get back into the hobby at the beginning of the year the first thing I did was haul my old 40k boxes out from under the stairs to see what'd been dumped in there that could be of use in an Emperor's Children force - I've finished painting up a first edition Space Hulk plastic terminator and an RTB01 marine, and there's a v1 Keeper of Secrets, plastic terminator Librarian, and single-piece metal mk5 Heresy armour marine, and some of those old Genestealers waiting their turn (not that you'd normally find them in a chaos army, but my theory is Slaanesh can seduce *anything*). And props to the sculptors back in the day, they don't look half bad alongside new troops.
I love 2nd edition models! I've been building the Ultramarines 2nd Company entirely with 2nd edition models for the past year. Getting all the models to fill a full company was difficult but doable with eBay.
The terminator captain is a Rogue Trader model (1st edition), not 2nd edition. The librarian force sword is absolutely standard. Every librarian model with force sword has it. Turmiel from dark vengeance has the same one, as does the last plastic librarian, and even Jensus Natorian, the Blood Raven Deathwatch librarian. The horned skull is the symbol of the Librarius, and represents the mutation of the human genome that led to psychic powers. Also, the old beakie marine is on the Rogue Trader cover. You absolutely have to paint him as a Crimson Fist. The consensus is that his load-out is power fist and plasma pistol.
When released the gun built into the terminator captain's power fist was a grenade launcher. Last year I undertook a project where I put together 40k armies for the current codexes using only Rogue Trader vintage models. I managed Dark Angels, Imperial Guard, Orks, Eldar, Chaos, Tyranids and a Genestealer cult. Also can you describe the Necron Lord you are looking for? I have several of the original version with a tall head, cape blowing to the side and holding a staff of light. All metal, no plastic parts. This predates the green rods. One is just undercoated and will probably never be painted by me. The staff of light arm is not glued on but I do have it.
Excellent video! Definitely a trip down memory lane. Back in 2e, I had 100 of those Genestealers - no two had the same are positions - they were painted like fireants! (In fact, I had 10,000 points EACH of Marines (BLACK TEMPLARS 🤪), Orks, Genestealer Cult, Tyrranids, Genestealers, 15,000 points of Imperial Guard, 2k Eldar and about 1.5k or so of Chaos (Noiese Marines anyone?)! Lost interest in 3rd ed so traded it away ffor 28mm Essex Greeks and tons of other Historical miniatures since that was my first love and I was pursuing my Masters in History in at the time. Note: Lead in not poisonous on your skin as the molecule can not be absorbed through the skin as it is too large. It is only toxic if you ingest it (so no chewing on or playing with toy soldiers then sucking your fingers); wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and you will be fine. (Been in the hobby since the early/mid 1970's when miniatures had far more lead in them; handled fishing weights, ammo and musket balls with no ill effect!) 🤪🎅😜 Finally, a miniature can be a model, but a model can not always be a miniature! You were handling metal MINIATURES and plastic models. 🎅
I found a box that had a bunch of stuff that looked vaguely like warhammer 40k, but they were TINY. Like super super tiny. After digging apparently they are from an old line of stuff called warhammer epic scale or something like that. So i got a whole tin full of vehicles, and soldier blocks sitting in my room now lol. I think they are near 30-40 years old because i remember seeing them as a kid before too and that was over 20 years ago, and they were already pretty old looking back then too lol
16:45 those genestealers are badass. They seem to be what came in a 2nd ed (?) box of Space Hulk. These sculpts tell you everything you need to know about genestealers.
3:53 I just remembered that the Captain in Terminator Armor that GW did for an anniversary, I think it might be a revamp of that model! That's actually amazing to think about
In my 2nd Ed IG army back in the day I used different style guardsmen for every squad painting in matching colors. My concept what they were just throwing everyone together
The Librarian model is wearing a necklace with a talisman. That's why it's off center. It's the motion of the models swing. The rams horns represent mutation. All librarians are supposed to be painted completely blue except for their chapter badge shoulder pad. The lighting up the blade is the 'force' conduit.
I remember these old minis, the old RT Space marine captain probabilly was a miscast, because I saw some of these, and they've a regular head. I build a whole heavy weapons squad with 2nd edition marines, and probabilly you're right about the genestealers' paint job , old Humbrol's where incredibly hard to remove!
The Librarian model you posted is from the 2nd edition release of the newer librarian models. Similar to Warhammer Fantasy at the time, all psykers in 2nd edition were generally available in three or four tiers. Librarians had classes/ranks: Lexicanum, Codicier, Epistolary and Chief Librarian. The model you have is the Epistolary version, or Level 3 of 4. GW used to release numerous "special" models at once. The Librarian launch included three different metal minis, and then a fourth in Terminator armour. I believe a bike Librarian followed after the release of the later plastic bikes, etc.
Oh, and Force Weapons, as well as Witch Blades, etc. were...staggeringly powerful in certain conditions. 2nd edition was miles above modern 40K in terms of craziness. No other edition has come close to matching the lore in the game. It was 50% role-playing game/50% wargame. Easily breakable by gamers, but no version has touched the madness of 2nd edition.
It is possible with the terminator that the leaning issue is caused by the feet having bent a little over time, I've had that with some old metal minis, you could try very, very gently bending them back a bit to have him looking up more.
Hey now... I'm from 1982 and I can only hope that I'm hanging in there. Lol I have a bunch of old 2nd ed models. A load of Marines and eldar. I have a handful of old nids too. Actually, I have one of the 2nd Ed zoanthropes on foot of you want it. Still new in package.
Idk if you'd tried it on those genestealers, but the paint stripper from AK worked really well for me. It managed to get though thick paint and varnish and its become my go to, though I wish the bottles were bigger
An old trick with metal models and slotta bases is to use plyers or just the corner of your desk to bend the tab into a V or S shape this will jam into the slot in the base and hold without needing anything else like blutak or folded paper. Also that terminator captain weapon on his fist is digital weapons upgrade card I think.
I have a bit of a retro obsession at the moment. With the squats coming back I've rather keen to try and get some oop retro ones so when I start a Leagues of Votaan army, I can have one squad of veterans. I am also eager to get a praetorian IG army. I'm on the look out, again for at least 1 squad of retro Praetorians to make up a veteran squad whilst the main bulk can be the new Wargames Atlantic minis. I have however also be looking through my old models recently because of my new interest in retro. I work in a charity shop and on very rare occasion, we've had retro models come in. Of course I've snatched up anything of interest and also whatever doesn't sell to save it fro, the scrap heap. But looking through it, I've found some nice stuff. An old Commissar Yarrick (like 1990s yarrick) A rogue trader inquisitor in terminator armour Rogue trader librarian in terminator armour A space crusade dreadnought with some other models from the same box Old space marine scouts (possibly rogue trader) Blood angels Captain (possibly 2nd edition) An old metal dreadnought I also got from work 10 metal cadians, 10 metal catachans, and I also already owned 10 metal valhallans and 10 metal steel legion. (No praetorian though 😭) I also managed to get part of the old hero quest box. A plastic wizard, Elf, dwarf, human with some plastic skeletons. All still on the sprues. It's so much fun seeing all these classic mode,s which look crap by todays standards but are full of their own unique charm
This video made me finally pull the plug on buying the metal lady inquisitor (plasma pistol version) that’s been gathering dust in my FLGS for a long while. Also, witch hunters codex is amazing.
When I got into 40k, it was the tail end of 7E, so I picked up Dark Vengeance before it went OOP, but I never got around to painting the Librarian or the Captain(?), so I found their models a few days ago with the intent of painting them up. It turns out that the pattern on the sword goes just as far as it does on the old model! Actually, looking at it now, their swords look almost identical, with the same horned skull on the top of the grip, the only real difference seems to be an aquila pommel on the new model rather than a skull. Edit: You were kind of right about the pattern going halfway up the blade, that's how it is on the currently in production librarian models with swords.
Hello Jay just to let you know that terminator captain you got is a super early 2nd edition and the gun on his arm is a grenade launcher! I think this guy was my first captain model when I was young
I think the IG could totally get updated. Theoretically, making generic multiple arm and torso options for raggedy, ornate, or muscular arm/torso, then making a regular infantry and maybe a heavy weapon kit for each regiment. 2 kits per?
The primaris librarians have that banding (it only goes up halfway like you waid) but the primaris librarian and the phobos librarian have the same banding
I had that 'falling forward' Terminator Captain in my Legion of the Damned space marine army back in 1989/90, even then I thought it was a mis-cast mistake that he was at such a weird angle.
Back in 2nd edition their were different versions of every Librarian (Lexicanium, Codicier, Epistolary and Chief Librarian) where as nowadays they are all just chief librarians. Everything is standardised, the rams symbol was and possibly still is the symbol of Psykers back in the day. It also had slightly different symbols depending on the level of the psyker. For example this particular Space Marine Librarian is an Epistolary rank. Also I sometimes have to pinch myself when you pick up a model that I consider to be new then have to remind myself that were 20 years ago.
"dumb Buzz Lightyear appearance" is the best description I've heard of Oldhammer Space Marines. They are derpy and charming at the same time. So glad GW introduced Primaris models to replace them.
The space marine captain in Terminator power armor has a grenade launcher attached to his power fist. The little thingies on each finger are Jokareo digital lasers, if you were wondering and yes, there were rules for that at one time. Also, I think you just coined a new term for a bad miniature: a "Ral Partha reject!" Good call, Jay!
That Librarian from memory was an epistolary (level 3) the ranks were lexicanium (level 1) codicer (level 2) epistolary and chief librarian. (Level 4) level being the number of different psychic powers they could take.
Inferno Pistols aren't hand flamers. They are pistol Melta guns and are extremely powerful. The Inquisitor was one of the highlighted models of the Witch Hunters Codex, using the Inferno Pistol, Power Stake, and Power Armor. Witch Hunters had so much fun stuff in it that was weird and wacky while being extremely powerful but limited in some way.
I decided to get into kill team as I never managed to paint an army, been in and out opf the hobby, got my old stuff out, have a boxed marauder minatures orc shaman on a war wyvern, 1992! Not sure what to do with it, paranoid of messin up the paint job! Not done many big minis.
The lean forward is common to a lot of metals, but is more pronounced in the RT-era Termies (Chaos Termies are equally bad). My suspicion is that it has to do with the depth of the molds, and in order to fit the bulky upper backs of the Terminators, the model had to be cast at a slight forward angle, which in turn requires the feet to be angled so that they still slide directly out of the mold.
I got a metal bloodthirster, a metal keeper of secrets (still in the box) 2 metal pink horrors still in the blister, 2 metal space marines, 5 metal khorne hounds and 5 metal possessed.
This rogue trader marine from 14:29 looks exactly like the one on the cover of Warhammer 40:000 rouge trader book, that gun etc only mirrored (the one with ork head in hand :D)
I have the old Genestealers and I prefer using them in Kill Team over the newer ones. Painted them up to match my current army scheme and they look phenomenal next to the rest of my (painted) army.
The horned skull is used by the greatest of Space Marine psychers as an hommage to the most legendary sorcerer in human history. Some called him...Tim?
Well done, sir.

This is 100% correct, even rules for it ion 1st ed Space Hulk!
his terminator prediction was right on the spot though
The Terminator Captain's leaning could be compensated for by cutting him off his slot, and pinning him onto a base that slops upward slightly. Like he's trudging uphill to the edge of a cliff. That way, his pose is leveled out, but not in a way to exposes the unnatural upturn of his feet. It would seem like a natural pose.
that's a good idea
I also wonder if you could remove the front half of the feet, and sculpt a replacement at a different angle using green stuff.
When I got mine, I bent the feet slightly - he was walking through tall grass so that helped.
The termy captain has a grenade launcher on his powerfist.
That used to be a thing.

It is only toxic if you ingest it (so no chewing on or playing with toy soldiers then sucking your fingers); wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and you will be fine. (Been in the hobby since the early/mid 1970's when miniatures had far more lead in them; handled fishing weights, ammo and musket balls with no ill effect!) 🤪🎅😜
Finally, a miniature can be a model, but a model can not always be a miniature! You were handling metal MINIATURES and plastic models. 🎅
You can also do the victorian guard(yes this exists) if you can find them
Librarian Epistolary!
Back when your Librarians had levels.
Also, them warp beasts tho. They're so ugly but charming.
This is correct. Epistolary, Codicer etc.
I still have a few old eldar models in original packaging. The ones where they still wore chaimail underneath their armor.
I have some of those old genestealers mixed in with my modern ‘stealers! You’re right, they look great alongside their newer brothers.
I have a full army of OOP Dark Eldar models and the one you’ve shown and they’re the absolute coolest looking army when set up on the table
I can't wait to paint my Space Crusade Chaos Dred. It came out 8 years before I was even born but it's ED-209 vibe is so nice
16:45 those genestealers are badass. They seem to be what came in a 2nd ed (?) box of Space Hulk. These sculpts tell you everything you need to know about genestealers.
Old models are so lovely.
I bet that space marine has a great personality
The primaris librarian has a very similar pattern sculpted onto his sword, it's a really nice touch!
FYI about the old RT capt, That back pack is a separate piece. The Metal backpacks are very rare
It is possible with the terminator that the leaning issue is caused by the feet having bent a little over time, I've had that with some old metal minis, you could try very, very gently bending them back a bit to have him looking up more.
3:33 the weapon in the power fist is a grenade launcher
I've been plotting a 2nd edition minis based Chaos Gate army, basically recreating the units available in the original game as a tabletop force.
Hey now... I'm from 1982 and I can only hope that I'm hanging in there. Lol
I have a bunch of old 2nd ed models. A load of Marines and eldar. I have a handful of old nids too. Actually, I have one of the 2nd Ed zoanthropes on foot of you want it. Still new in package.
The terminator captains weapon on it's power fist is a grenade launcher. I used to have this model, brings back memories
That weird "Ram horns" is in a Chaos lords package.
Makes them look like a "Flintstone Bowling Club Member"
WOOOGA!
WOOOGA!
Idk if you'd tried it on those genestealers, but the paint stripper from AK worked really well for me. It managed to get though thick paint and varnish and its become my go to, though I wish the bottles were bigger
That old terminator captain did have a reissue as a limited collector model back in 2016
An old trick with metal models and slotta bases is to use plyers or just the corner of your desk to bend the tab into a V or S shape this will jam into the slot in the base and hold without needing anything else like blutak or folded paper. Also that terminator captain weapon on his fist is digital weapons upgrade card I think.
Can't wait to see these painted up!
An old Commissar Yarrick (like 1990s yarrick)
A rogue trader inquisitor in terminator armour
Rogue trader librarian in terminator armour
A space crusade dreadnought with some other models from the same box
Old space marine scouts (possibly rogue trader)
Blood angels Captain (possibly 2nd edition)
An old metal dreadnought
I also got from work 10 metal cadians, 10 metal catachans, and I also already owned 10 metal valhallans and 10 metal steel legion. (No praetorian though 😭)
I also managed to get part of the old hero quest box.
FYI- there is a version of the Terminator Captian from Rogue Trader in Mark VI armor. It's hard to find as it was a limited edition model
Hello Jay just to let you know that terminator captain you got is a super early 2nd edition and the gun on his arm is a grenade launcher! I think this guy was my first captain model when I was young
based on the weird references you see in old GW, I guarantee that the skull with goat horns is a reference to Tim the Enchanter
I actually like the old genestealers! I repainted mine last year and they fit perfectly in my hivefleet!
I think the IG could totally get updated. Theoretically, making generic multiple arm and torso options for raggedy, ornate, or muscular arm/torso, then making a regular infantry and maybe a heavy weapon kit for each regiment. 2 kits per?
OMG! I had that Beast Master and some Chimaeras when I was a kid, this video unlocked a very old memory, great finds!
Inquisition was also going to get their third Codex in 3rd-4th Editions for the Ordo Xenos army. Codex: Alien Hunters, which never came to be sadly.
Interesting, that Inquisitor has Fluer de Lys on its knees, might be one of the few instances we've gotten of a Sister Inquisitor
The primaris librarians have that banding (it only goes up halfway like you waid) but the primaris librarian and the phobos librarian have the same banding
@ 15.56 - please paint this dude! you can do a great job, I have faith in you
I had that 'falling forward' Terminator Captain in my Legion of the Damned space marine army back in 1989/90, even then I thought it was a mis-cast mistake that he was at such a weird angle.
The captain in terminator armour has an aux grenade launcher. Gw redid him in plastic a few years back.
Would love to see you do OOP the OG Gaunts Ghosts kill team (as well as a comparison to the modern box)
The Primaris Librarian has a little bit of that lighting bolt kinda pattern on his sword as well.
The thing on the terminator captan is a grenade launcher, used to be an option back in the day.
Dam, was here to say it.
I'd love to see you improve on those Chimera, wow that model is... something else
I got a metal bloodthirster, a metal keeper of secrets (still in the box) 2 metal pink horrors still in the blister, 2 metal space marines, 5 metal khorne hounds and 5 metal possessed.
The Captain in the Terminator armor. The weapon on the Power Fist is a grenade launcher. That was a standard load out in Rogue trader
So the skull head was the librarians symbol for all chapters and armour was blue.
Eary Techmarines had a big clawed hand.
Chaplains had the big skull
This rogue trader marine from 14:29 looks exactly like the one on the cover of Warhammer 40:000 rouge trader book, that gun etc only mirrored (the one with ork head in hand :D)
I’m soo close to buying this large old eldar army I have to repeat to myself I will not add to my pile of shame!
I have the old Genestealers and I prefer using them in Kill Team over the newer ones. Painted them up to match my current army scheme and they look phenomenal next to the rest of my (painted) army.
