@@AutomedicGarage So I jumped across the 2 posts. I get a loud click from the starter but it does not actually turn. I have tried to multiple times. It does the same when I turn the key in the ignition. I have tried with jumper cables to my other vehicle as well and it still will not turn the motor over. Can I assume the starter is dead? Check your shift linkage cable, that was my problem. The 2 torque screws were loose, when I tightened them the truck started right up.

You have a starter relay under the dash in the fuse/relay panel, don’t remember the location number on the diagram but I believe it’s the far right on that’s by it self. See if it’s clicking, if not swap another that’s not essential to it. It also could be your neutral safety switch or you also have a clutch switch so that if the truck is in gear the clutch must be depressed. I replaced the glow plug solenoid, cleaned off grounds etc, but truck still won't turn over, it tries too but won't fully turn over. What you think.
Both batteries are new but I think they may not be big enough cause after a few tries you can tell truck draining batteries so I put jumper cables on to help but my truck has a small battery itself. So I feel like it could be batteries, my brother n law sprayed a little starter fluid into it and he said it turned over and ran for about 10 seconds, but I don't want to try that cause it could mess up glow plugs .

You have a problem somewhere between your ignition and the solenoid. The small wire that tells the solenoid to trip and send power to the starter may have a short or a break in it.
There’s not a neutral safety in a standard but a clutch depress switch instead. Please make sure your truck is in neutral if you jump anything so you don’t get run over.
When I did with a screwdriver it didn't start the starter just clicked. Even with the wire from 12v to battery positive it just clicked. What's your opinion. Thank you

@@richardrucker15 if solenoid clicks, you know you have hot batteries and you can hear the starter attempting to throw out then it’s either the starter or if all you hear is a hard thud from the starter you could have a flexplate/flywheel problem or hydrolock issue.
If your jumping the solenoid with the screw driver and hear a click at the starter but it doesn’t turn over then you either have low battery voltage or a bad starter.

After replacing that it won’t even allow that now. Clicks but won’t start. Dash and gauges work. Any ideas?
If you could jump the old solenoid and have it start then it was the solenoid. Something must not be hooked up correct with the new one. Also you don’t have to have anyone in the cab when you jump the solenoid, put the key in the run position and just jump it. If it’s a manual make sure it in neutral.
@@AutomedicGarage do you know the ordering of the wires? I am 99% sure I rehooked them exactly as they were. I even undid them thinking maybe that was it and still same issue. @@tr3nt08 in that case it sounds like you have an issue between your ignition and the solenoid so that your not sending power to the solenoid telling it to close.
If your referring to the screw driver not jumping the solenoid then you have a bad solenoid if it does nothing and won’t turn the motor over but only if you don’t hear it clicking and sending power to the starter, if it clicks but the starter doesn’t engage you have a starter issue.

LONG STORY short.....the most powerful tool in mechanics shop is either soap/oil to lube a sticky part, or......VINEGAR!- i was at my wits end at night in the dark i figured id clean the battery connections one more time..especially after remembering a vid saying that 7.3s are quirky if they dont have perfect battery connections- showing all kinds of weird symptoms took all 4 cable clamps off 1 more time- brushed and cleaned...then i looked at a bunch of small thin wires coming off the side of the positive clamp on the "non-starter" battery (driver side) they were held in place with kind of a jack leg arrangement- so i went at it with a toothbrush and vinegar...and EUREKKA!!!! ALL THE LIGHTS AND CIRCUITS CAME ON....so i guess one of those little wires is a switch leg of some sort...powering up everything...wow...well at least i wont have to change anything for another 5 years- strter alternator ignition switch voltage regulator starter solenoid🤣🤣🤣 . Ive definitely gotta clean up/ rearrange those little connectors- after 35 years they are barely holding on...... .@@AutomedicGarage
Thanks just ran into this great video
Nice video good fix.
Outstanding information
Thanks for watching.
If everything checks out on the solenoid and I replaced the ignition switch. Would it be the neutral safety switch. I tried starting in neutral and park, and nothing
I’d look at the starter then
At 1:54, when I did that, there was sparks but no cranking, what does that mean?(mine is a van chassis I had to take the battery under the hood out to reach solenoid)
If you jump the solenoid and nothing happens your starter ain’t workin

My truck cranks but no start I did it enough times that my batteries died what could it be
I was just driving my truck and it just shut off and I tried starting it again and it just cranks.I got it towed back to my house and I replaced the icp and the crank shaft sensor and now it still just cranks do you have any suggestions on what it could be
Need some live data. What’s ipr and icp doing when cranking
I will try it. Thanks
Just bought a 2002 7.3 f250 powerstroke diesel 4x4. Has 278,000 miles on it. Got it for 1500 bucks, guy said it was the computer. No lights, interior or exterior, nothing worked. I just checked all fuses , relays replaced a few, blew put the computer and got the truck lights, and fuel pump and even truck to crank over but won't . I replaced the glow plug solenoid, cleaned off grounds etc, but truck still won't turn over, it tries too but won't fully turn over. What you think.
How long did it sit? I’m assuming it’s got a good set of hot batteries on it.
It sat for 4 years. I didn't check oil level, I heard in deisel engine if it's too low on oil it won't turn over too
Both batteries are new but I think they may not be big enough cause after a few tries you can tell truck draining batteries so I put jumper cables on to help but my truck has a small battery itself. So I feel like it could be batteries, my brother n law sprayed a little starter fluid into it and he said it turned over and ran for about 10 seconds, but I don't want to try that cause it could mess up glow plugs .
I have a 2000 7.3, 153,000 miles. It’s just starting to have quirky issues..nothing major but just some age. I’m the only owner so I know what maintenance has been done. Do you have any vids on a clunking noise in the front end? Only on rough terrain. Not on good pavement or concrete road. Excellent channel.
Sounds like sway bar bushings and or ball joints. Don’t currently have a ball joint video but I do however have one on sway bar bushing replacement with prothane bushings. Work great and last a long time. Check it out. Thanks for commenting.
@@AutomedicGarage great. I already did the ball joints. I’ll tray the sway bar bushings. Thx

Can one of these going bad cause the dash to lose power? I have no power but my engine light comes on alittle but that’s it
Are you referring to the solenoid? No if it’s bad it just doesn’t send power to the starter.
My service truck is a 2003 7.3 manual trans I can hear both relays working key and clutch but not cranking I have no solenoid on fender I disconnect my starter wire from plug connector and touch it to the battery and cranks and starts why am I not getting power from inside
Since yours is 03 with no fender solenoid, you have a starter relay in your inside fuse box.
Wheres the plug connector? I have same problem.
Like your work thanks
Can you help please i have a 99 ford f250 7.3 i had the check engine light on and connect the obd2 to try to read the codes and try to delete them and when i did after i try to start the truck but it wont even crank and i did what you did with the screw driver and the truck starts you know what it might be?
You have a problem somewhere between your ignition and the solenoid. The small wire that tells the solenoid to trip and send power to the starter may have a short or a break in it.
@@AutomedicGarage oh ok ima try that tomorrow
I don’t have 12 volts at the little wire, what now? Cranks when solenoid shorted
You either have a brake or short in your the key switch wire coming from ignition or a bad ignition switch from the sound of it.
Does that go for a standard?
There’s not a neutral safety in a standard but a clutch depress switch instead. Please make sure your truck is in neutral if you jump anything so you don’t get run over.
When I did with a screwdriver it didn't start the starter just clicked. Even with the wire from 12v to battery positive it just clicked. What's your opinion. Thank you

I’m having a ‘no crank’ issue with my 2002 f550. It died driving it home from the shop. Rolled off the road and it won’t even crank. Lights, radio etc all turn on but no crank. My truck doesn’t have that solenoid on the fender for some reason. Any ideas?
02 and 03 do not it’s only on the starter for those years.
Yeah I don't see it either
Does anyone know if it would be same to look at these things on a 05 6.0?
Similar but the solenoid is on the starter not on the fender well
So I jumped my solenoid just like you just did it's still not turning so is that my solenoid bad or my starter bad
Did you hear the solenoid click?
Yes the solenoid on the fender is clicking and sound like my starter clicking
@@richardrucker15 if your solenoid is making contact and you hear the starter click the solenoid is fine. Are you sure you have hot batteries?
Yes sir brand new put in yesterday
@@richardrucker15 if solenoid clicks, you know you have hot batteries and you can hear the starter attempting to throw out then it’s either the starter or if all you hear is a hard thud from the starter you could have a flexplate/flywheel problem or hydrolock issue.
I tried the method with the screwdriver, all i got was a click . Need a new stater ?
If your jumping the solenoid with the screw driver and hear a click at the starter but it doesn’t turn over then you either have low battery voltage or a bad starter.
@@AutomedicGarage wait, i think i might have messed up. When jumping the solenoid, i didn’t leave the truck in the on position 😂 but i got my batteries tested at Autozone, they’re good for rn
@@5300trilla it doesn’t matter wether the key is on or not, if you jump the solenoid it will power the starter up the truck just won’t start with the key off.
@@AutomedicGarage okay bet bet, it’s my starter then. Damn 🤦🏽♂️ i literally just posted a short of my 7.3 running last night lol. Hey man, I had the same issue, no crank no start. Did the test at the solenoid and the starter clicked but didn’t start, replaced the starter and the solenoid both and still only getting clicks in the dash and clicks at the starter
How hot is your battery and how clean are your terminals?
Did you figure it out?
@@LemonySnicket-EUC figure out the no start in the video?
@@AutomedicGarage my question was to T Riggn' Scott.
@@LemonySnicket-EUC sry I thought you were askin me.
Great video. Was about positive it’s my solenoid so got a new one and got it in today. Before that it would start if I held the screwdriver on the 2 posts and having someone crank it from in the cab.
Just odd it’s having the exact same issue with the new solenoid and the old one worked fine until today. Thank you so much for the reply just subscribed you’re the best mechanic youtuber out here responding to everyone!
Also I cleaned battery posts and terminals and can start with the new solenoid by having it in the on position and touching the solenoid posts but no crank from the cab.
@@tr3nt08 in that case it sounds like you have an issue between your ignition and the solenoid so that your not sending power to the solenoid telling it to close.
@@tr3nt08 when you turn the key to the start position see if your getting 12 bolts from the ignition source
Alrighty man I have check all that and it still isn’t helping just a few weeks back it was starting from in the cab now nothing.
What happens when you jump the solenoid?
What if the screwdriver method doesn’t work ?
If your referring to the screw driver not jumping the solenoid then you have a bad solenoid if it does nothing and won’t turn the motor over but only if you don’t hear it clicking and sending power to the starter, if it clicks but the starter doesn’t engage you have a starter issue.
@@AutomedicGarage yeah I replaced my solenoid and my truck wouldn’t start then I replaced my starter with a buddy ! Took forever because of one little wire what wouldn’t come off ! Plus a shitty bolt ! But yeah she starts up faster now and thank god I got that done ! It’s always something ……

Truck will start after jumping the solenoid. But still wont crank turning they key. Noticed no power to fuse# 20 fuse isnt blown though. Any ideas anyone?
That tells us your starter is working so now the obvious, gotta figure out why your power wire to the solenoid has not power. Did you make sure it wouldn’t start when out in neutral?
@@AutomedicGarage well looks like I found the problem. Moving the steering column up and down will make the truck start. So now got too see why is getting a short in the wiring.
