This seems like true competition for other multi-head delays like the Volanti. I think it was pretty crafty to release a full-sized version along with the compact RE2.
Very tempted. Would’ve been cool to see a third knob by the saturation knob that was width and you could go from the amount of stereo it is now all the way to a full blown hard left right ping pong. Also would’ve put the guitar or line input switch on the back like the re-20 and used that space to switch between reverbs
Well, that's the soundtrack for Midsummer solstice sorted out. Was on the verge of purchasing a Volante, but this sounds more my bag. Brilliant demo and the jam is clearly inspired.
So glad you demonstrated the "aged" tape mode. I've watched tons of these videos where they never bother to take it off "new." As far as I'm concerned, the "new" mode is just there to add some more options. If you don't want the "aged" tape sound, you're probably looking for a different pedal.
Thanks for the excellent demo Leon! I had my eye on one of the originals, which are being resold for over a $1000. Now I can finally have one for under $500. I guess good things do come to those who wait!
Finally got my RE-202 and thought I'd just share this here. Leon, you are correct that you can use the reverb by itself but only if you turn the echo volume down MANUALLY. My hope was that when I turn the delay off that the reverb could still be on regardless of echo volume or any other settings. I'm sure there is some sort of hack by using the presets or something but this is disappointing. If anyone has a solid workaround, let me know!
I’d prefer to spend my money on the Keeley Dark Side v2 which comes in around the same price and offers you 4 multihead tape Echo delay patterns as well as phaser, flanger, Rotary speaker, uni-vibe & one of the best 3 stage fuzz pedals I’ve used to date. So you’re basically getting what you get in the new space echo plus an extra 4 great sounding effects and a killer fuzz.
Keeley make absolutely awesome stuff. I used to own their Compressor but haven't checked out any of their newer stuff. That sounds like an awesome pedal.
It sounds great but I think I'll stick w my DD500. Although, the no deep dive rabbit hole of menu options is a plus. I've had the 500 for a few years and am not using it to its full potential.
So, in case you were interested, thanks to your "Scene Ignore" breakdown, some inspiration from Cooper Carter, and help from the Great Ron at RJM, I now have my Mastermind LT set up to control amp channels in my AXE FX3, while using my FC12 to control scene switching. Works ace too.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail for this video. I was like "didn't they already do this". Wondering how it compares to the old cosm unit. Watch the old ones get expensive cause "the new one was a cheap cash grab. If you want that authentic voicing, just get the old one." Personally I think this sounds great. Been wanting to get into delay.
Volante has a few more deep features, including panning and feedback options for each head so it might work better as a "do it all" delay, whereas this gives you a more of a "play cool stuff" vibe
Oh, man! I just pre-ordered the new Line 6 DL4 MkII Delay Modeler. Now I want this, too. And they make it in a small pedal format. I really don't need that many delay options, but that has never stopped me before. :-)
@@LeonTodd yeah indeed, i'm looking for a simple stereo in/stereo out delay/echo pedal to be"in front" on my UAFX Lion 68 ala early EVH, I'm wonderinf if the Stymon Brig would be good enough, I know it's not a tape delay, but I think any good tape delay should do the trick using EVH's delay settings of about 300 to 400 ms with one to two subtle repeats for "ambience"
I’ve already watched a few demos for this and yours was the most informative, thank you 🙏 The only question I have left: Were you running it in front of your dirt or after at the end? (I’m looking for something I can put in front of a dirty amp that doesn’t have an effects loop)
@@LeonTodd Thanks for the reply! Yeah, looks like it from what I'm seeing elsewhere also. I really hope they eventually update to make it available by preset. Bit of a deal killer for me at the moment that it's not. Sounds fantastic, though!
Menus and options are anethema to some people and the "what you see is what you get" controls here will make them pretty happy. I also imagine BOSS are sitting on a massive amount of pre-pandemic manufactured stock for the 500 series while this is a totally new form factor.
Reading the manual it seems to say the max time you can tap tempo is 2 secs (in long delay mode). However the actual delay time I guess would depend on which heads you had selected. Again the manual says heads 2,3 & 4 are 2x, 3x and 4x the time of head 1 which is set by the tap tempo/repeat rate. It doesn't look like you can select head 4 in isolation but you can select only head 3. So I reckon that makes the max delay time 6 seconds. IMHO the units not trying to be a looper so anything above 2 seconds is possibly not its strong point. But what it is trying to be is an accurate recreation of the re201 with a few extensions, for me personally that's ideal. Playing live I really just want a go to delay with a few presets to save trying to see knob settings (whilst being blinded by led lights). Recording wise I'm more likely to use a plugin like echoboy or valhalla.
Why is EVERY DEMO with a clean tone, I get it but, I wish EDDIE VAN HALEN was alive to show people how HEAVY GAIN can be used with DELAY as a GREAT DEMO.
Yeah disappointing for sure. That's exactly why I purchased the Strymon Volante. The Volante has 4 different tape heads that you can pan left or right for a true stereo image. I'm surprised Boss didn't Include this, but to me it sounded like mode 12 (all 4 heads active) has some kind of stereo imaging. Maybe I'm wrong, but on the RE-202 I believe only the built-in reverb types are what they setup for stereo imaging instead of the echo/tape heads themselves....
@@toddmohr9551 maybe we just have to wait for the right demo showcasing it? i’ll just say hopeful till im not. funny enough i watched videos on the Volante for just that reason right after this.
@@toddmohr9551 i also noticed that the reverb is the only stereo effect (i think the delay modulation is as well but i could be wrong) kind of dumb, i believe the re-20 had mono delay and stereo reverb as well. i believe the EQD Avalanche run is the same as well. a huge let down in my opinion tbh
Is this the same engine as DD500? So it's dounds the same es the DD and the RV500 Space echo mode, just more tweakable? Or this a different unit? You can't go wrong with that boss pedal, it's got all the bells and whistles! Love it's retro look also. Yet another great demo Leon.

If you get the opportunity, it would be really neat with a comparison between this and the old RE-20 pedal.
Love the new design and sounds! Glad you made this review in stereo too :).
Thankyou! Had to go stereo :D
Boss hit it out the park again! Love this 👍🏾
It sounds fab and this is an excellent demo Leon

Keeley Dark Side v2 is a great product, but unfortunately it doesn't have MIDI, so I gave up buying it.

I don't think I've ever wanted a guitar pedal more than this pedal.

What is the first riff you play when trying a new delay?
U2 - still haven’t found what I’m looking for …
Foo Fighters - Aurora
Sirius - Alan Parsons Project
holiday in cambodia. Love the DK guitar sound
Really nice atmospherics and dreamy textures.

I’m yet to read or hear anyone say a new anything is better than an original. Ha! Always the way and it’s all bullshit!
Id trade my old unit for one of these
Hell Id have traded my RE 301 for the RE20 I have now.
The dirty tones at the end sounded perfect !
Was that a Marshall !?
It was the Boogie Mark IV model in my Axe-Fx :)
sounds like every other delay pedal of extreme high quality!
Very nice… it’s on my plan to buy list. 👍🏻
Cool video! Tape delay addicted here. Seems to be an awesome device. Which are the main differences in terms of sound to the El Capistan? Cheerz ✌🏼
Got the mirror ball going in the background or did you invite the fairies @5:12?
You think an ultra wave would pair well with that ?
The Intro rocks!
Hey Leon how did you find this compared to the Volante? They cover pretty similar ground it seems
Volante has a few more deep features, including panning and feedback options for each head so it might work better as a "do it all" delay, whereas this gives you a more of a "play cool stuff" vibe
Thanks for the best reviews! By the way, the Stratocaster frets you were playing in the demo are broken!

When will you demo the new DL4? You know you want to… LOL

Can you leave reverb on and have delay off on this? That would be great, and work as two pedals worth of real estate on my board
Yes
Very cool. I'm a bit dissapointed you didn't show how the tapes go in, or how to clean the head tho!
If I read the product description correctly on the GC website, no tape replacement necessary and regular hardware maintenance
last part of the video is pcm "algo" diff delay; more luke-style!
You know me too well ;)
A lot of people on the Boss channel are really throwing this under the bus because they wanted a modern recreation of a real tape echo.
"I'd love a real tape echo, I'll promise I'll buy one no matter what".
*sees price*
"Why did they make it so expensive?!"
@@LeonTodd Well Fulltone has a reproduction of the EP-3, but it will set you back $2K USD. Slightly cheaper if you buy their solid state version.
