- THE FOUR TOPS - WALK AWAY RENEE
And when I see the sign that points one way
The lot we used to pass by every day
Just walk away, Renée
You won't see me follow you back home
The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same
You're not to blame
From deep inside the tears
I'm forced to cry
From deep inside the pain
That I chose to hide
Just walk away, Renée
You won't see me follow you back home
Now as the rain burns down upon my weary eyes
For me it cries
Just walk away, Renée
You won't see me follow you back home
Now as the rain burns down upon my weary eyes
For me it cries
Your name and mine inside
A heart on a wall
Still finds a way to haunt me
Though they're so small
Just walk away, Renée
You won't see me follow you back home
The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same
You're not to blame
Some songs are to sing, some songs are to to dance, some songs wrench the heart out of your chest and turn the song into a religious experience. This is one of them. Thank the lord I lived through this.
It's almost spiritual, great song
Beautifully said.
Great cover. They did a better job on this song. Than the Left Banke
The fact that all four members are gone has already turned this into the consummate tearjerker!
Love this beautiful song by the fabulous Four Tops a song that you'll never forget
Still brings tears to my eyes 60 years later..Thank you FOUR TOPS
Rest in Peace Duke, thank you for the magical sounds of a great soul band, you have left us with some great song memories, I think nearly all the Tops tracks will jog a few memories for me and many thousands of others. RIP Duke, your work is done
Too sad - what a great band x
After all these years, this song still gets to me that few others do. The overall sound, the lyrics and Levi’s phenomenal vocal - what a perfect song!
Yes and.Levi sings it so well
I can feel it!!! This song made me fall.in.love.with The.4.Tops
I MISS THE 4 TOPS SOOO MUCH ❤❤❤❤
Songs dont get much better than this magic
Don’t know why but old music is just better, way better.
Motown was a wonderful phenomemon!
Some of the best American music ever recorded. ❤
This song is so powerful. This version gives a truly heartful and soulful interpretation. Its my favorite version.
Terrifyingly sad.
this group will never be TOPPED!!!
4 sure
. *GOD, HOW I LOVE MOTOWN. SADLY, I DON'T KNOW THAT WE'LL HAVE ANYTHING LIKE IT AGAIN.*
.
. - A Native San Franciscan born in 1952
Levi Stubbs makes ALL the difference! Who else can interpret and render a song like him??
I've said it once before, and I'll say again, Levi, could out sing all five of the Temps and that means with David or Dennis on lead.
Agree. This is one of the greatest covers ever
@@joejohnson6321 - Whoa, don't be dissin' my Temptations! ;-)
@@joejohnson6321 Amen. May be one of the top five greatest pop/R&B vocalists, with Jerry Butler, Ben E. King, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles. But his repertoire with the Tops was so extensive, and his rich dynamics just punched out of that cheap paper speaker over the AM waves.
Absolutely he did .... Stubbs was one of the greatest front men of all time , such a powerful voice.
The Four Tops were my favorite Motown group during my teen years in the 60's. Hearing their songs always brings back memories of good friends, crushes and good times. What a classic !!
The same exact thing for me! I feel the exact same way!♥️
I was born in 1950. Our world has turned into a monstrosity. Conflict everywhere all the time. Sad.
Such beautiful music, we are so blessed to have been there, but I will fight until I'm dead to save our human race from the microbial threat. It can be done
I was born 1960 and grew up in Chicago...all Motown was my favorite and still is today.
@@karenstrycharz1499 me too👍
And just think from what I've read Levi was offered movie roles and a solo career, but he choose not to allow himself to have top billing but wanted to acknowledge that each member of the group was just as important as he was. I think that is very commendable for a person to not want to be placed above all the other singers in the group. The four tops have had an awesome career and my brother and I both still love them. They are our favorite group
I love them too ❤❤❤❤❤❤
It is just amazing how some music just never ages.
I just loved the Four Tops. This song is special to me because when it came out, I had a boyfriend named Ricky who I stupidly broke up with. Whenever I hear "Your name and mine upon a heart on a wall" still brings tears to my eyes because I did scratch a heart with our initials in it on a metal fence post when we were still together. I sometimes wonder if that heart is still there. Just walk away,Ricky,........I loved him more than he could have ever guessed.
At the height of their fame Berry Gordy wanted to change Then to Levi Stubbs and The Three Tops, but The great man would have none of it. He said We started as a group and we'll continue as a group. Levi Stubbs, not just the greatest singer of the twentieth century, but one of it's greatest gentlemen.
Original members till the end , music legends .❤
There will never be any sweeter sound than the Four Tops.
c'mon man
Temptations , Isley brothers is just a few I can think of along with at least fifty others , not to mention hundreds that in reality was just every bit as good but didn’t get air time due to the vast amount Motown and others around the 60s
thr boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the boys!!!
That era of music period. They sang with soul and every song and lyric uttered is pure bliss
Love this version of Walk away Renee
Transports me back to my youth. Instant teleportation. Love it.
An all time favourite of mine by a totally brilliant Group. If only we could turn the clocks back to life as it was then...but perhaps that's just nostalgia due to my age (nearly 70)!
What a record. This brings back so many memories!! A young lad in the 60's just found Soul and full of life! Dancing the night away, just paid with money in my pocket, lovely girls no sound like this sound!!
This is the only song I can think of where I genuinely can't decide which version I like better. I like the strings and the sad quality to the original, but damn, Levi's passionate belting in this one...
I am so glad I grew up listening to songs like this of my generation . If only I could turn back time and relive those happy and carefree times when life was a little easier .
I grew up in the 60s I had all this great music to listen to (lucky me). 😂💞
This song is low-key creepy
Owam Hoyi shut the hell up, you don’t know creepy between your eyes and nose
we are very much the fortunate ones arent we.
Wish I grew up then
Me too. Miss those days. Life was good.
The difference in the 2 versions is that The Left Banke was a teenage group and the originators of the song, while Levi Stubbs gives it his usual powerful interpretation! Love them both!!
Didn't know they were kids thanks for the info
Gosh I just heard this on RTE GOLD and I almost teared up, my heart sank what an Era, family, friends, life, was so innocent God help us now! Anything goes where at one time it would never now wonder this World can't keep up with it all, Internet, media, danger, this song does it enough for me 💜💜💜
Just love this song...Motown gave extra dimension to every artists' songs...sheer brilliance by the Four Tops!
first done by the Left Banke in 1966. Four Tops had this great cover in 1967.
Growing up I only heard the Left Banke version and loved this song. This one blows it away. Singers are supposed to convey their sentiment and feelings to make you buy into the experience. Levi is one of those rare singers that makes you feel as if every word comes from the belly of his soul. Is such a simplistic even juvenile song in many ways, but the vocals add a maturity and emotional balance that no other (of the many) interpretation even approaches.
Beautifully written DA Hannah! My sentiments exactly! Couldn't have said it better! Big up yourself!
This is an AMAZING cover of the the original recording by the Left Banke. The Four Tops - especially Levi with that incredible voice - took a nice song and made it into a timeless classic.
What a relief;no autotune,no computers,simply magic !❤
The thing about their music is it never ceases being great no matter how often I listen.
One of my favorite songs. Top 5 vocals of all time.
I normally don’t like covers but this is outstanding!! One of my favorite all time favorite groups ❤️❤️❤️
This is the original released July 1967.
@@karlk9316 Wrong...this is a tune written by Michael Brown of the band Left Banke. It was recorded and released by that band in July 1966. This rendition cover was released in 1967.
Love 'em both for different reasons. I think I listen to this one slightly more though.
So sweet it almost hurts to listen. So many memories...
This music will never die
This song will still be playing in a thousand years xx
I really hope so
Pure magic from start to finish.
Others have sung this song but, no ones come close to the Four Tops. They're just brilliant.
The empty sidewalks on my block are not the same you'er not to blame. Wow, that Lewis and the Four Tops were one of a kind, and that song is off the chain!
yeah isn't there something about those lyrics, they remind you of when you were a kid and they break your heart.
Yes you're absolutely right, I liken time to one trillionth of a second and in this impossibly short.period is all we have to except what Christ accomplished for us on the cross of Calvary so us friends and loved ones will fare well in this life and have peace of mind through the endless eons a of eternity.
Three Billboards is a masterpiece but this song still is absolutely fantastic to listen 50 years after its debut from the Four Tops
I've always loved Motown sound
Me too!
I'd be hard pressed to find something NOT to like about Motown. Swoon! 😃 ✌
They just don't make music like this anymore, more's the pity.
Actually there are a lot of artists that are going back to this style of music. You don't hear it on the radio, you have to luck out and find it on youtube, or spotify or something.
old saying: "They stopped making music in 1970."
True
Tears in this old man's eyes for wonderful times. ❤
The biggest love of my life used to dance to this.....he is no longer here.
I was luck enough to see them on tour in the UK, 1980's. Absolutely brilliant.
Had to listen to this song today because a friend of mine passed and we used to sing this song. Still love 💘 the Four Tops.
No matter how many times I Iisten to this, it sounds as fresh as it did in 1966. The Four Tops are the best!
When I listen to the old school classics now I am overwhelmed with the depth
of emotion that I feel. They move me in a way they didn't when they first came out. Maybe it's because I was a kid and teenager during the 60s and 70s, I loved the music then but, I'm really hearing it now. All I can say is I really appreciate them now. This is one of my favorite Four Top songs. I could sit and listen to it all day! And, it's good to know that I am in good company 👍
Temps & Tops...good memories & a big smile of joy
The Four Tops - complete professionals, fine harmony. One of the very best 1960s groups and still performing in the UK 20 years after. Wonderful stuff!
I'm reliving those wonderful, irreplaceable Motown years today. These songs defined my early teen years. RIP Abdul "Duke" Fakir, and thank you.
One of the greatest songs ever written love it
I ❤ the Four Tops.
And their signature dance move is priceless.
The great Levi Stubbs what a voice such feeling and emotion. This is one of the best songs of all time it cuts me to the core it is a beautiful song made even more beautiful by Levi's beautiful singing backed by Duke, Obie, Lawrence Just brilliant
Agreed ❤😍👌
Always remembered boys. Loyal to the end. A rare attribute in music today.
John Daniels pure class
Joseph Cacioppo The kids of today love their music as much as we did back then. Music didn’t start or end with us
@@HamiltonRb Amen to that!
These guys were classy and talented with heart and soul.
Levi was and will always be the best front man ever.RIP Levi Stubbs.
A timeless beautiful song that lives on forever.
This is a beautiful song on so many levels: lyrics, fine grammar, music. I've loved the 4 Tops since the '70s.
But a typo in the on-screen lyrics: 'chose' s/b 'choose'.
Amazing!!!!! I wish the world was this way still.
What a classic, 2021 and I'm still loving it, but what about the amazing musicians behind the Motown sound! All those musos who gave every track their ALL..that's a classic sound that hasn't been equalled! 🥰
Beautiful song. After 50.+ years it's still beautiful! 💕
Yeah, it's a freat cover, far better than the original imo.
I just cant get over the sheer brilliance of this song, the way it builds, the powerful vocal from Levi, the rest of the vocals and pretty much everything! 50 years later it still evokes so much. I wasn't born when this was out but can only imagine the joy of waiting for the new Four Tops, Supremes, Marvin tune etc and feel shame at what is released now. At least we have UA-cam!! Enjoy
When I was 12 years old, I loved soul, even more in beat, rock music, and I loved that song !!
Oh the harmonies......beautiful 👌🏻
So grateful that I was raised by parents who listened to all genres of music ❤️ I grew up listening to EVERYTHING and found a fondness for it all!
Excellent! I loved Motown, especially The 4 Tops - Levi Stubbs on vocals really touches my soul! Peace from an old hippie!
Yes 3 Billboards brought me here too - what an amazing film!
Great cover of a great song as only the Four tops could do it.
Wow, they don't make music like this anymore. Before my time, but I absolutely love it!
this song has been in my head all day at work......it will never die....
Fantastic sound of the Four tops will live forever
The Four Tops put Their own style into this Song AND I Absolutely Love it!!! I will always Love Them AND Their Music, What a Talented Group. To Me Their Music will Always be Timeless... Always!!!
The Four Tops are simply the greatest!!
This music was magic and it still lives on in the hearts and memories from all of us from that generation. OLD SCHOOL FOREVER!!!!👌
Solid! Love it, goose bumps... great drumming
Such a good song! Incredible voices!
My song. Thank you The Left Banke and The Four Tops.
A song that will never die as it uplifts all who hear it.Anyone feeling down should play this song and even if it transcends only momentarily it may get you back on track and ready to face whatever challenge has got you to that place.
Beautiful rendition - I always sit up and listen when it come on the radio.
They were FLAWLESS. They had an incredible knack for singing covers, yet made them their own!
Check out their version of "If I was a Carpenter."
Simply FLAWLESS
Carpenter ..BEAUTIFUL and so is Bobby Darins..
Class pure class
I have always loved their version of that beautiful song! Incredible song!!!!
'Carpenter' was indeed a classic rendition from the Four Tops! As a proud Jamaican I am duty bound to inform my fellow music lovers that John Holt( now deceased), also has a great cover of this song in reggae!
Beautiful version!
You know what these bands went through some serious s*** to from racism to rip offs and still managed to make the best music ever thank you
You think that might be a big part of the reason as to how they got that soulful sound. That takes a heavy soul to release those feelings.
The music industry has always been a cut throat business, whether black or white the record company always tried to rape the artist and pay them as little as possible.
@CrooK Not because white people wrote the song doesn't mean they still weren't being ripped off - now you weren't making sense.
Can you believe a 16 year old wrote this song:? It's so hauntingly beautiful.
3 people wrote this song.
A snot nosed kid wrote it.
@@maxdee677 no, a single teen wrote it. Its even on the Wikipedia
It comes straight from the heart - all the best songs do. And it still brings tears to my eyes, after all these years.
Thank you for the info. 👍
Always loved this song so much!!! It goes without saying this group is absolutely extraordinary & love every single one of their songs! Motown Sound is extraordinary but this song I absolutely adore! I always have, too!♥️
One of the greatest groups ever and I'm no musician but the drum fills on this song or awesome
Loved this group, so talented! Such good memories from when I was a kid, in the 60’s. One of my favorite songs ❤
Yeah, it's a freat cover, far better than the original imo.
Four Tops please come back and save the music. We miss you.
I wish my bar still jam this kind of song, the first time I heard it being played on the bar scene in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, I was completely blown away by it. Its just so fitting to the nuance of the bar. Or I'd wish I listen to this song on the bar when my sweet one left me.
It is times like this where I wish I could have met in person the writer and performer and let them know the Impact this song has had on me and a host of others around the World. I never grow tired listening, and may I add, singing, this powerful song. There seems to be a hidden meaning in the lyrics, thats my interpretation, this for me makes it more intriguing. This song puts me on a high and has given me more admiration for Levi , Motown and the Four Tops. Its sad, but we all have to go. Thanks for the legacy.
The Mowtown sound with the Funk brothers what a sound we will never have the privilege of them again to listen to a great loss
Yes! This is music, love it by the Tops and the Left Bank
We are blessed to have heard the voice of the great Levi Stubbs . Just awesome.
Levi Stubbs R. I. P. ( and the rest of the 4 Topps ) who took a piece of music and rendered it a classic .
oldies are the best! great group!
Four Tops have to be my favorite Motown group. Love their sound and the great memories.
Love the Four Tops!!! Great cover from the original!!
Great song, always loved both versions!!
The best Motown act, beautiful song.
Just a great overall song whoever has done it.But the Tops version you can see Renee walking away.Bravo!
IMHO, Best version ever!
Best version of a great song.
I hadn’t heard this song in so many years and than thanks to Three Billboards outs Ebbing Missouri it came on and I tirelessly looked for it on UA-cam and thank God I found it!!
l love the four tops version. l listen to it a millions of time.
This version is magic.
Jason Thomas I like left bank version it's the original.
Jason Thomas agree
You can listen to this version in the movie "3 Billboards outside ebbing Missouri." It hit be like a ton of bricks so I looked it up on internet.
Class act group!!
