Four Tops "Bernadette" My BIG Extended Version!!

- No copyright infringement intended. The Tops in 1967 were on a roll, including this huge hit. You'll hear lots of instrumental breakdown, including James Jamerson's amazing bass. Also on hand...the rest of the Funk Brothers, and, of course, the heavenly Andantes! I rightfully can't take credit for all of the amazing breakdowns (about 4 different mixes this extended version came from)....but I did edit and tie them together in hopefully a coherent way.
I was lucky enough to meet Levai Stubbs before a concert in the eighties, I asked him if they were singing Bernadette that night as it is my middle name. He replied “ yes Honey we are, and tonight we’ll sing it just for you” And they did! I sobbed for hours afterwards. I loved those guys so much, and Levai’s voice was like no other, there could never ever be another.
Oh my how very lucky I would have cried my eyes out!!!! I would have loved to meet the 4 tops how sweet that must have been!!!!!
You gotta give these guys credit for getting close to the Levi sound Check them out >> ua-cam.com/video/0V-HWAzRAeM/v-deo.html

I love this. 🙂
Lucky girl😊
Levi Stubbs, one of the greatest male voices of all time. Period.

Levi Stubbs!!! One of the best if not the best lead singers that ever graced the doors of Motown!

Just found out while on this channel listening to some Motown that the creator of this channel, John Perrone, died in 2020 of COVID-19.
What a beautiful and enduring gift he left for us to enjoy.
R.I.P. Mosogotam 😥
I love how Mosogotam arranged this song! So beautiful! May he Rest in Peace!🎶💔🙏🏽
Sorry to hear of his passing ...
Levi's vocals are great. But I love listening to the backing vocals. Their ranges are outstanding. Best group of all time
So much energy the funk bros gave with James Jamerson on bass
Definitely one of them but now I’m hard pressed to think of another one!
James Jamerson's bass playing is ,was , always will be genius personified.
spot on!! Be Blessed
Yes!🥰🎼💯
James Jameson is an absolute monster on the bass!!!
This remix rally gives it a chance to shine!
James Jamerson was the greatest bass player that ever played the instrument on planet earth. A human music treasure copied by thousands all over the world but never equalled !
Dear Lord I hope and pray when I get to heaven, Levi will be singing up there. What a voice that man had. You heard his distinctive voice and you just knew the group you were listening to and knew each song was pure class and quality. The Four Tops were an all time favourite group of mine and this extended version of Bernadette transports me back to the 60's and the wonderful music that was around then.
You have very low expectations for going to heaven. If your motivation is to hear a mere mortal singing, a created being then you have really missed the mark.
I enjoyed the Motown sound as well but that all pales in comparison to the glory of God.
I definitely will not be hoping to hear favorite songs and see singers that I listened too while on this side of glory when I stand before God ond day.
O
You and me both!!
Thank God for the Funk Brothers
Whenever I listen to Bernadette now, it has to be by Mosogotam😢! So sorry to hear he passed!! Listening now 2024❤
Masterpiece. I just love the bass from the legendary James Jamerson, who was one of the greatest if not greatest bass player that ever lived. The bass provided by James Jamerson with the vocals provided by Levi Stubbs made Bernadette an absolute classic. I just love this. Brilliant. No.4 in the USA in April '67 and No.8 in the UK in the same month. R&B No.3, should have been a No.1. Superb.
U said it all...That bass kicks ass. And Levi puts the icing on the cake....what a great piece of work BERNADETTE is.. can't stop listening to it...PERFECTION
They will never be another James Jamerson. He was the heart of Motown
For those who don't know, it's very difficult the nail the very first note of any song. When you do that you are probably on the way to becoming a great singer. The late great Levi Stubbs could have probably belted out Snuffleupagus and made it a hit. Acapella can expose you. Lol. His delivery was crisp, strong and pure. How could one stop playing Motown...ever?? 4 tops were one of the few groups that could step on the same stage with the Temps.
The Funk Brothers! They were the sound of all the great
Motown music.
This version has so much vibes. That bass line has been vibing in my head all day
The opening with just the bass line and the voice blew my mind! Amazing!
+torres songs Is it wrong that I enjoy the bass line in the intro more than the rest of the song?
+yamanmustafa It is truly beautiful.
The bass line from James Jamerson .... always magic !
La ligne de basse de James Jamerson ... c'est toujours magique !
torres songs
The Motown bass later became standard in movie themes. Or similar lines to the Motown bass.
There is no auto-tune no crap no teleprompters this is all real music from the heart and soul the backup vocals the need for everything no magic machines to to turn your voice in no drum machine they went in there and laid the s*** down I've been playing guitar for many years I have so much respect this era of music
Musical perfection, bass makes the hairs on my neck stand up,
Genius.
The late great James Jameson bassist

That James Jamerson...man what a low down to the nitty gritty funky Bass Player he was. Who were the 96 tone deaf people who thumbs downed this extended version? This is tantamount to a 12" single.
Wow, this song grabbed me in "67" as a child and I still love it today. When Levi yells out "Bernadette", it's a plaintive cry of primal love.
How beautiful is your comment. I was taken with ot immediately as a 10 year old and it came put close to the time the movie "the song of bernadette" came out .. at least thats a connection i have always made
Yes!!!
That's my favorite part of the song lol. There was a soldier named Bernadette in my Battalion when I was in the Army. Every time I saw I yelled "Bernadette!" . She'd shake her head and laugh
Same here!!!
I feel you! It got me waaay back when I had no idea what any of this meant. Lol
I absolutely love this extended version
In '67 I was 9 yrs. old and heard this song in the original version and it was great! But this extended vetsion WOW, brings back the cute little chocolate face girl named Bernadette that I was in school, just like it was yesterday.
One of my favorite MOTOWN songs ever!!
Thanks for you version, RIP.
nobody plays bass like james jamerson, ever.
Detroit hala
dave johnson Standing in the shadows of Motown !
Agreed.
greenmean1
agreed, brilliant bass on that track!
dave johnson that's a real Fact
My eyes are filled with tears listening to this. To many, I'm sure I don't have to explain why.
Nuff said, "it goes without saying" love it

@@jacquelinerussell8530, you couldn't have expressed it better. Cheers.
It just goes without saying
My mom is Bernadette. My Dad married her in June ,67 about the time this song came out.
WOW
This never gets old. Just gets better with time. 🥃🥃 Hope you all enjoy.
This is a very touching song. I love the pleading in his voice when he says "I want you because I need you to live! " and the way he calls out "Bernadette!!" at the end of the song it sounds like a man so much in love with her. I picture Bernadette as someone so beautiful and he loves her and can't trust other men including his friends around her. Such a touching, emotional song. Nobody ever felt like that towards me in my younger years.
I love the extended version because it let's you hear just the base player and others like the background singers it's really nice to be able to extract just certain parts that you know put the song together.
Still sure you were loved x
Me also👍
Bernadette, what a classic from Dozier Holland and Dozier made flawless by the Four Tops, all the stars were aligned when this musical magic was made, with gratitude from Ireland
May Jamerson's legacy live on through all bass and Motown enthusiasts.
THE ANDANTES SHOULD BE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. I CAN'T THINK OF MORE IMPRESSIONAL BACK UP SINGERS THAN THESE LADIES. THE JOB THEY DID ON MARVIN GAYES 'WHAT'S GOING ON'' WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD. ONLY KNEW OF THEM FROM THAT CAPTIONS ON MOTOWN ALBUMS. TODAYS TECHNOLOGY HAS BROUGHT THEM FOREFRONT. LOUVAIN DEMPS IS AN ABSOLUTE ANGEL AS I'M SURE THE OTHER LADIES ARE AND WERE.
yes I think so also. I submitted them for tvone unsung.. these women were the voices that mad the records sound so goood
What a masterpiece... just magnificent with Levi and that bass...BAM👊🏼
Thanks very much for posting this. James Jamerson and the band were so on point, and Levi's voice just soars. I miss the Tops...saw them in concert twice. They rocked! Levi was the best baritone of all time. Soul+opera combined!
I remember my dad, who didn't dig a lot of soul music, sitting in my bedroom one day and listening to this record (the 45) with his mouth open in awe...
Saw the Temps and 4 Tops together one GREAT night .... it was truly awesome ... and yes, James Jamerson was truly the best bass player I have ever heard in my 70 years. When music was at its best !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RDC
This is soooo good! I listen to it regularly. RIP, John Perrone🙏
That incredible bass line was by the awesome James Jamerson...
The Andantes were one of the best girl trios and one of the best kept secrets of Motown. They deserve so much more credit than they were ever given and with your superb rendition, you can actually hear them much more clearly. 4:20 is my favorite part of the song in the original and it is very nice to be able to hear the backing vocals more clearly.
You gotta give these guys credit for getting close to the Levi sound Check them out >> ua-cam.com/video/0V-HWAzRAeM/v-deo.html
Word!
James Jamerson is the GOAT
I will always love the best voices in the universe, The Andantes!!! My favorite is my mother Louvain Demps. I love you Mom,your son, Michael. I so proud of the mark the can never be erased!!!
Hey Mike, just returned a mess. to your Mom, she's the Best !, ed
mike demps She was part of musical history, If it were me I would be so proud I’d never get my head through the door.
Echoing the sentiments of the other music lovers - yeah, be mad proud. Beautiful work by Ms. Demps!
Without the andantes there would not be a Motown they should have got more attention
Ask her dose she remembers 4tops lonely lover
good to see the Andantes receiving long-overdue respect for their solid session contributions to a slew of Motown artists, particularly The Tops and The Supremes
Bernadette is my favourite all time song by the Four Tops! Thanks for making this special version.
Still water really is great , heard it in Germany with the Army!!!!!
@@bobbywall172 Yes it is Still Waters ( LOVE) and Still Waters ( PEACE ) I have a 45 vinyl of the jewel of a song January 2,2021
Me too Ron. ❣️❣️❣️❣️💔💔💔💔💔💔
My favorite is whatever is playing 😉
One of my favorites songs :👍
Listened to this on my transistor radio.....CKLW out of windsor ontario.......54 years later still KICK ASS!!!!!
Gettin' those awesome tunes from across the river:)! I read that Abdul Fakir's (the last living original Four Top) dad swam from Windsor to Detroit across the Detroit River to seek employment (during the 30's I believe). Can you imagine just how risky that was?
Excellent Job. Your mix allows the average person to understand how a musical arrangement is put together. Thank You!
Ron Barrett I think if they've done this with more music people would understand the love, skills, complexity of musicians and not just behind a computer reaping the benefit of real musicians.
This song was always too short. My life is complete, now. ❤
Astounded by James Jamerson. I'm so glad he had the backing group, The four Tops to help him!
Im here in awe, knocked out my boots in Wales uk 2024. My mom and pops played this. I was born in 1964 so i grew up with Motown. I still adore Motown.Voices instruments arrangements words lyrics, oozes quality. Thank you thank you thank you to all involved.. God bless..
one of the best love song ever written, such passion.
They really had it going on; love the bass and percussion.
the originals are masterpieces these extended versions highlight
just how skilled these people were
I WISH I COULD LIKE THIS VERSION 1 MILLION TIMES! LOVE IT!
Beautiful music 💕
Good Lord, maybe the best extended version ever. That bass, damn, the whole rhythm section is over the clouds, just sick. Big, big tune!!
Every time you hear a James Jamerson bass line you think it's your favorite, then you hear another one and you change your mind til your hear another etc etc......
Wait until you start getting into all the amazing percussion by Jack Ashford... Motown kept that man busy!!
@@mosogotam is Jack Ashford on this track?
@@iamhereblossom1588 I would say yes!!
James Jamerson, the bassist, was an absolute genius...and his talent really shoes through o. this song and Stevie Wonder's I was made to love her.
This is Mr. Stubbs & the funk brothers at their very best, not forgetting the tight harmonies by the Tops! ♡♡♡
Awsome! From a dude who was THERE - wanna go back to those days!
This is a masterpiece, thank you John, you are the Motown Man!!!
Yesssss He ls !!!....✊💯💜👑😍😘💋🎵🎤🎼🎶
Actually Lamont Dozier wrote THIS. Jamerson killed it on bass.
You gotta give these guys credit for getting close to the Levi sound Check them out >> ua-cam.com/video/0V-HWAzRAeM/v-deo.html
WOW!! For openers, just two words: James Jamerson. This version is amazing!! It shows the immense talent everybody in Detroit had. Thanks so much for posting.
No, it showed the immense talent one man has. I'm fairly certain Detroit isn't filled with people that can sing like this.
@@hualni Man are you living?? You obviously don't know Detroit, Motown left...the talent didn't. Plus look at all of the contemporary talents that existed along with Levi Stubbs. Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, David Ruffin, Diana Ross, Tammi Terrell, Martha Reeves, Eddie Kendricks, Dennis Edwards. I live in Detroit you must not, because its still filled with extraordinary talent. Have you ever heard of the Detroit Youth Choir? Boy if you think just one man in Detroit is the only one who can sing you're too stupid to be on Social Media.
@@dewaynecoleman1989 That was a long winded way of just supporting what I said.
WOW SO TRUE. AMAZING FABULOUS VOICE. THE HARMONIES ..OMG HE STAYED TRUE TO HIS BROTHERS
Listening to these superb extended versions of these Motown classics I didn't believe anyone could make perfection even more perfect. Awesome accomplishment! Bravo!
+dennis falsetti Thank you so much, Dennis!
sheer genius
I never post anything on line, however i feel as if i must now. Thank you for these fine mixes you have produced. I salute you Sir. Jamerson and the Funks are at the top of their game. The Groove blows me away. Vocals as always are perfect. Fantastic track. Thanks again for posting, and in doing so maybe introducing the youngsters to some of the greatest, most timeless music ever made. X
Aaron...thanks so much for your very kind words!!!
I love this extended version...all day.
One of my all time favs from The Four Tops. This extended version is pure magic to my musical soul.
You gotta give these guys credit for getting close to the Levi sound Check them out >> ua-cam.com/video/0V-HWAzRAeM/v-deo.html
The late great James Jameson bassist. Original funk brother never would play anything the way they wanted him to. Played on 95 percent of all Motown hits. No one would record without him.
Loved this 'entree' for so long, without realizing the ingredients and recipe that went into making it! The details of the background vocals ("need your love, want your love", never before heard!), the agile bass line, the mandolin-like strum of chords beneath all ....mosogotam is a master.
JAMES JAMERSON, The Bass guitar king no one did it better than him.
Lucky to have grown up in this era. The Motown years. No label had a greater contribution to the world of music. Great times.
the Michaelangelo of songs just beautiful and powerful
There were so many things you could have chosen to do with this.
And you chose to make it DOPE!!! This is beyond awesone
I LOVE THIS SONG, RIP LEVI STUBBS, I LOVE ALL OF THE FOUR TOPS SONGS, THANK YOU FOR SHARING.
Mosogotam understands the importance of James Jameson. A creative yet faithful remix.
Outstanding mix , Jameson kicking that bass line hard
Man, I love this version.
Been one of my faves since child hood baby boomer . 63 now . Never come across this extended version before . It's getting down loaded for sure ❤😊 Sydney Australia 🦘 4/8/2024
That jangly guitar 🎸 is killing it. Oh my God. What a sound!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❣️💔💔💔💔❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️. James Jamerson.
The thing that I love with all of your extended versions is the chance to hear all of the detail and work that goes into the songs that gets buried in the mix. This is not even my favorite Four Tops song but tonight it is, all tension and drama of recording was highlighted. Of course Mr. Jamerson's work on this track was beyond compare. Thank you Mosogotam for your wonderful work. The Universal Music group clearly has not thought about the benefits of the Motown catalouge, the public wanting to hear these classics (me for example), bringing these classic songs to different generations of music fans, and of course the bottom line, the money that they would make. You obviously love the music and would treat these timeless classics with the utmost of care.
What are you favourite..? 🤔🙃🙃 xx
I know exactly what you mean, not the best 4 Tops song BUT the best song to showcase Levi's terrific voice
When I began my broadcasting career in 1967, Bernadette was one of my favorites. It still is today. But I never really HEARD it, until today. Thank you!
Michael....I am most appreciative....thank you very much!!!
Michael, what an incredible time to begin your broadcasting career it must have been amazing, frightening and most enlightning!
I was born December of that year. Five days later Otis Redding perished in an airplane crash. 😢
mosogotam For the only joy in life is to be loved...❤️
This is truly magic.... Levi, The Funk Bros, Andantes, & the Four Tops.
Omg this version is awesome! Love that bass! Levis voice carries their music to such heavenly heights. Hes in a heavenly choir now rockin the angels!
simply amazing bass playing, love it.
Jamerson was the best. PERIOD
Him and duck from the m g s
My Andantes
Wow, 1967. That's now almost 50 years. What a great song. What a difference between things were back then. They were the last days of civilization and decency in this country. Before everything got "I must have a trophy even if I didn't deserve it," came into being.
Not if you are black!
My favorite Motown group ! Love Levi Stubbs ' his voice was so powerful and unique !!!!
The 4 tops; maybe the best of the Motown groups!
Mosogotam keeping the spirit of Motown alive for the next generation !!!!!!!!!!!
Can't believe I hadn't commented to this extended version before, mosogotam. You've pulled out all the stops - The Funk Brothers, The Andantes, and of course the fabulous Levi Stubbs lead Four Tops vocals. Heaven on earth!
+marknorthwest93 ...I can't believe you missed this one either! Thank you, Mark! Check out my channel....I bet there are others you haven't seen!
+marknorthwest93 SHO YOU RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm listening to this with headphones and it's a high I can't handle....WOW!
This is still one of motown's most powerful group's, the music and vocals speak volume such power that can't be matched with today's singing groups.
I love these extended versions. It means I can pick out the sublime bassline, the drums, vocals etc. all individually. They are masterpieces!
This is my favorite love song of all time and I NEVER HEARD all the extra vocals you included in this version😍✊🏽✊🏽💕 thank you for posting this was beautiful!
You are a musical treasure. As a bass player, I can not tell you how much I appreciate you and these remixes. God Bless you.
I can never hear this too much. Simply splendid!!!
splendid indeed!!!! Bev Blessed
Now that's how you arrange a song , James Jamerson at his best!
I am crying tears of joy listening to this heartfelt soul classic. Levi Stubbs delivers the good as well as The Mighty Andantes. Well done on this mix, sir!

Grew up in the 60's listening to the Motown sound. Timeless music by some of the most talented musicians ever. Pop music today is garbage.
Yeah man awesome showing the Funk Brothers who made the music for ALL the Motown hits! RIP James Jameson and Benny Benjamin!!
You're the man!!! I love the isolation of the parts. The way music supposed to be recorded!
allenlevelle Thanks so much, Allen!! Glad you like it!
I had the privilege to see the Fabulous Four Tops under the Arch (in St Louis) in the 1900s. Wonderful!!
Memories, moving on .....!
Much as I love JJ I'm in awe of Levi Stubbs depth of expression. How he stretched every written syllable into a tear jerking sonnet is a mystery as grand as JJ's thumpin and bumpin. Stevie's ok too Extraordinary job Mr Mosogotam
That solo bass line is a killer !!!! Bernadette ! They were only 4- but to me they were The Tops !!!
This song deserves eight minutes!! Thank you!
