  • Egyptologists John and Colleen Darnell discuss unusual images of animals on papyri and ostraca from the workmen's village of Deir el-Medina, the religious significance of monkeys and geese, and how an ancient Egyptian love poem can help us understand a painting of a cat hugging a goose beneath the throne of queen Tiye.

Thank you Doctors Darnell. Colleen and John, I am over the Moon to experience this. I have seen you on NatGeo and in another channel’s UA-cam video reviewing the Mummy movie from the 1990s and I said then how I thought you should have your own channel and here it is.
Although I can’t speak intelligently in any academic sense about Ancient Egypt, it has been a love I have had since childhood. This was a great video, humanizing ancient Egyptians in a way seldom attempted in documentaries.
If I may, I would love to see you go further along that road. I would like to discover if there is evidence from which conclusions can be drawn about what a typical relationship between a Man and Woman during this age would have been like and whether or not any correlation can be made with relationships throughout the ages. I would love to see videos on your vintage style - love your house with it’s style, library, carvings, rugs and vintage furniture. It really paints the picture that you are both really living your passion. Your enthusiasm is great to behold.
I would love a video where you go over the many different theories on how the Pyramids were built, the construction of the Sphinx and it’s place in the history of Ancient Egypt, as well as the construction of the many temples, obelisks and palaces. Which theories do you think stand up and, based on your experience and study, are most likely to be based on actual history.
I am looking forward to your future videos like no other channel. I liked and subscribed before I even played the video and will share it with as many people as I can. Fun, educational, with some vintage style mixed in - it’s like a channel created just for me, and I’m sure many others will feel the same way. You’re stuck with us now.
    Looking forward to your next.

During my teenage life, the early 70s, my stepmother would tell me, don't get in the back seat of a car drinking warm beer in a can, with a straw unless you desire some trouble on a date. I ended up with a bf throughout school, 5 yrs., older than I. Not in the back seat. Funny though. Since then I've never had a pet monkey, although I have had numerous lovely cats. I just got randomly suggested the Rachel Maksy video and had to follow it over here. And I'm really glad I did. Even better than I expected. Great content. Informative, interesting and well presented.
I don't really have anything else to say. Just wanted to let you know that its appreciated and I hope the occasional videos keep coming.

You two are amazing! Please continue doing what you are doing, we need more videos like these! Also can you please make some videos talking about each egyptian deity and share some information that might not be available on the wider web?

I'm so glad I found your channel! I've been to Egypt (Masr) four times and I never went to all the amazing, ancient places! My life was in Cairo. I love everything about you two! Egyptology with a vintage, Egyptian revival fashion, and decor! I also collect antiques and enjoy history! Can't wait to go back in 2022!

I am looking forward to following your videos. The way you two present the material is so enjoyable. I didn't know anything about the importance of the goose -- now I am going to have to do a little reading. Congratulations on the new channel.
