I'm actually surprised the movie has readable hieroglyphs that actually mean more or less what they are supposed to say in the script. That's actual dedication from the props department.
in Smallville (random i know) they actually used a alphabet from the comics to say what things were meant to say, and some funny jokes. For example Kal-Els pod said "Made in Taiwan" in the base like most cups say. But yeah, its awesome that in The Mummy they also used actual hieroglyphs, good on them!

Im egyptian,live in egypt and I didn't even know that. Extremely dissapointed....in myself,I really don't know much about the country I've never left. There has been so many Times where ive threatened (jokingly and not jokingly dont ask) to just take someone on a "trip" and just drown them in quicksand. Again,don't ask.

I wonder if it isn't entirely 'feasible' (in a manner of speaking) for the magical sand storm to have created exactly the right aeration to produce dry quicksand?
@@sometimessnarky1642 Yes, there is moisture, but it isn't enough to produce quicksand in the way that we imagine it as. Its dry and you can sink in it, but not actually wet enough to be quicksand quicksand.

Years later and I’m still consistently surprised at how well The Mummy 1999 holds up, they actually dealt more fantastic, authentic costumes, sets, accurate hieroglyphs than the 2017 Tom Cruise version.

My friends and I are part of a group who dress in 1920's/30's period attire regularly and one of our members had formed a good relationship with her. We were all invited to a steamboat Nile river cruise, the cost was $3k per person (Not counting all of the other fees that might have been racked up along the way). While I would adore such a trip, and the chance to meet Colleen, none of the members in our group had the funds to do so as we all worked minimum wage jobs. Here's to the future though. We never know what it might just have in store...
You can definitely tell by the way she talks about the facts and her knowledge of egyptology that she truly loves what she studies. She has such excitement in her voice.

Well unless it turns a steady income, like with any self-consciously embarrassing minimum wage job, I don't see the incentive in admitting your occupation has progressed no further than the hobby level. This is an "indoors" outfit or an outfit you would wear for semi formal events or presentations. In-field dress is a total 180 degree change. You start with several layers, eat lunch with 1 layer, and go to dinner with several layers. Night clothes will be several layers as well. It can actually get really cold at night on the Eastern/Northeastern coast of Africa of a night. You often wake up to frost.

Agatha Christie would have been delighted to write a story like that. After all she too was very much into archeology and Egypt. My aunt did a house boat cruise down the Nile a few years ago and visited one of the hotels Agatha Christie had resided in. Very impressive building.

I love how she wasn't a snob about this EVEN ONCE. She fact checked everything in such an interesting way while acknowledging that it's a fun movie that had potential to be even better. The Mummy has been special to me my whole life, cause if it wasn't for this movie I'd never have been introduced to Egypt at all tbh.
I know I love the first and second movie despite the unacurate dates about the period or the egypcian culture that now a little too noticiable with her explainig everything in the nicest way posible.

I started watching this video’s intro and actually burst into tears.... When I was younger, my grandma passed away, and my grandpa decided to sell my mother’s childhood home and move into a retirement community. I was young when the sale went through, but my most vivid memory is that it was sold to a pair of Egyptologists, and the woman had a beautiful severe black haircut. I was excited that they planned to not alter the house much because it was protected by the historical society. And when I saw this intro, I suddenly saw the living room where I spent so many Christmases when I was young, and had so many amazing memories. I felt so much nostalgic joy and heartache seeing this house again, and seeing how little it’s changed. Thank you for giving me a little sneak peek into a home that meant so, so much to me throughout the first half of my life. It’s so good to see that the house is being so cared for

i know what you mean! for me, it was the tv show "who do you think you are" they trace a celebrity's ancestry, and the historians tell them their findings and go into detail about their ancestors' lives. made me realize how important history class is (i always thought it was boring in school). on a side note, it also made me realize why it is so important to have a son (to carry on a family name). there was one episode, where they traced the lineage and found out she came from royalty. the daughter of king edward (can't remember which king edward) married a man, took on his last name, and by the time the family tree moved down several generations to the celebrity, the royal name was buried. such an amazing and important history in their family, and it disappeared, just because the female didn't get to carry on the name.
There's probably no point in asking given how many inaccuracies Dr Darnell pointed out, but it would be awesome if you guys did this again for The Mummy Returns. Even just for the sake of another collab 😍

This was the coolest UA-cam video ever. I seriously considered Egyptology as a career as soon as I found out it was one, as Ancient Egypt has been a fascination for me since I was 10. I thought I was pretty well versed, however, I learnt some new things today. Thank you!
*fun fact:* cats were NOT worshiped because of their connection to death but because they got rid of poisonous snakes that could kill the Pharaoh, and got rid of the mice that carried disease. The original cat Goddess was Mafdet and was seen as a fierce protector of the home, and kind of morphed into Bast-goddess of protection and cats. Bast was the protectress, and defender of the Pharaoh. In later times Bast became the goddess of protection and blessing and was the protectress of women, children and domestic cats. She was the goddess of sunrise, music, dance and pleasure as well as family, fertility and birth. In other words cats are dope.
She kinda dismissed cats as no big deal, though I always heard and read everywhere (I know everywhere is not a reliable source) that cats where worshiped like gods -- or at least that they where pretty important. Hence the amount of cat statues, mummified cats, drawings of cats, etc. Is this a myth? I really would like her to speak further about that.

@@starfall0 Cats were mummified because again of their connection to protecting the home from snakes and disease carrying mice. Bast is also the daughter of Ra the sun god, and again protector of the Pharaoh. She was very important and thus cats were seen as beloved and important by association. Cats were also mere pets in the home as well. Cats weren't the only animal to be mummified-sacred creatures such as birds, ducks, fish, dogs and cats. Only things and people of importance were mummified, since it was expensive, and given good resting places, which is how the theory that the Pyramids of Giza were built by slaves was debunked. The workers who built the pyramids were given a resting place right next to them-slaves would never have such an honor since the Pyramids were homes to the Pharaohs. Also because Jews didn't exist during the time in which Pyramids were built.
Yes I was surprised to hear they didn’t name cats but then I realized what naming something means and how I believe she is miss understanding their spiritual and mental out look in this one are .. To name something is to own it .. if you up hold cats as guardians of the gods and by law even they were held sacred I know also happened .. then maybe not acting as if you can go around giving them all names you come up with self was actually a response to that sacred status.. instead giving them all one title that describes but not limits them to being a pet was the concept :) I find it hard to think in this one area she was right on they valued dogs more or was lack of value to not name them ... as during a famous battle with the Romans the Egyptians has lost simply because Roman army places cats on all the ships then tossed cats at people and all scattered them among the battle field .. which lead to Egypt surrendering all because was against law to harm a cat and so they refused to fight and risk killing one cat to point they rather of gave up own empire and lives .. Does that make sense they weren’t as valued to be named or dogs were more beloved? I think not my friends !!! For shame on this dog loving vixen of a historian trying to woo us in to her k-9 worshiping ways .. not in this house hold !! Not on this day madam !!! Millions of cats have been killed/sacrificed in Egypt. They were worshiped but in a wrong way. The killed so many of them. :( Watched a docu about it only few days ago.

It may not be accurate at all, but the time it was made in, I think it’s at least a nice representation? As in, “hey look how cool Egypt was/is!” And not a “hey look how savage Egypt was/is!” Because when I watched it as a kid, it made me want to learn more about Egypt and the general regions history. Moving forward all us movie lovers should be more critical of the representation, but we also have to remember that some movies could be used as a “what not to do” then banished all together.

@@RonJohn63 But how many people in the world are trained to read hieroglyphs as if they were reading a book? Only 5,000 to 10,000 in the world. It seems impressive, but compared to the world's current population, that's less than one percent. Small enough to still be impressive!
OH-MY-GOD. I'm a History teacher in a Secondary School in Spain, and my students are just now learning about Egypt. It's a pitty that their English is not good enough, because I really would LOVE to play this video in my class... And... you know what? First off, LOVE your channel, been binging for quite some time while entering data. You've been one of the main influences on my journey to vintage fashion. So thank you very, very much. I'm a professional entomologist (I study our little 6-legged friends, the 'bugs') and I LOVE THIS MOVIE, one of my absolute favs of all time. BUT my gosh, poor scarabs. Such a bad example of our lovely little buds. Scarab's don't fly well, don't crawl fast, and do not eat living flesh (there are some exceptions to the rules, as with all things/beings, but you never get the trio or even two together haha). I keep the cuties as pets and take them to outreach events all the time. Unless you are dead and half decayed or something with a very very thin epidermal layer, aka skin (and absolutely tiny) like a small frog, you have NOTHING to fear from a scarab. Most... ok mostly all, are cute little dung eaters that help to clear waste we'd prefer not to step on. PS most of their cute little mouths don't even have the capability to bite if they'd like. Again, love the channel, you helped me a lot throughout the pandemic. You ever want some help on insect related things, just contact your local beetle gal.
Colleen is like one of the first professional historians I have seen, that doesn't act all full of themself just bash some film/media production of an era, all "NOPE! NOPE! WRONG! WRONG!" She was pleasing to watch! I feel like about 80% of most of them act so full of themself and contrive to the point where it's laughable. I am glad she can see what this film intended to do. Yet informing us properly, without attacking the creators/directors of the film.

I'm just in awe of this woman, she's living the life. I remember when I was a kid and obsessed with ancient Egyptian culture and mythology: I had all the NatGeo magazines about Egypt and a bunch of maps, posters and books, and I would always get up really early on weekends to catch documentaries on the Discovery Channel and such (oh, to long for simpler times, when History Channel didn't mostly talk about aliens all day). I actually almost went to college for archaeology at one point, and am now studying Image and Sound Design with the intent to specialize in art direction and costuming, currently dipping my toes into historical costuming, so Colleen is out here living the other flip side to my dream life and killing it. Truely iconic.

Years later and I’m still consistently surprised at how well The Mummy 1999 holds up, they actually dealt more fantastic, authentic costumes, sets, accurate hieroglyphs than the 2017 Tom Cruise version.

My friends and I are part of a group who dress in 1920's/30's period attire regularly and one of our members had formed a good relationship with her.
We were all invited to a steamboat Nile river cruise, the cost was $3k per person (Not counting all of the other fees that might have been racked up along the way).
While I would adore such a trip, and the chance to meet Colleen, none of the members in our group had the funds to do so as we all worked minimum wage jobs.
Here's to the future though. We never know what it might just have in store...

This is an "indoors" outfit or an outfit you would wear for semi formal events or presentations. In-field dress is a total 180 degree change. You start with several layers, eat lunch with 1 layer, and go to dinner with several layers. Night clothes will be several layers as well. It can actually get really cold at night on the Eastern/Northeastern coast of Africa of a night. You often wake up to frost.

I started watching this video’s intro and actually burst into tears....
When I was younger, my grandma passed away, and my grandpa decided to sell my mother’s childhood home and move into a retirement community. I was young when the sale went through, but my most vivid memory is that it was sold to a pair of Egyptologists, and the woman had a beautiful severe black haircut. I was excited that they planned to not alter the house much because it was protected by the historical society. And when I saw this intro, I suddenly saw the living room where I spent so many Christmases when I was young, and had so many amazing memories. I felt so much nostalgic joy and heartache seeing this house again, and seeing how little it’s changed. Thank you for giving me a little sneak peek into a home that meant so, so much to me throughout the first half of my life. It’s so good to see that the house is being so cared for

i know what you mean! for me, it was the tv show "who do you think you are"
they trace a celebrity's ancestry, and the historians tell them their findings and go into detail about their ancestors' lives. made me realize how important history class is (i always thought it was boring in school).
on a side note, it also made me realize why it is so important to have a son (to carry on a family name). there was one episode, where they traced the lineage and found out she came from royalty. the daughter of king edward (can't remember which king edward) married a man, took on his last name, and by the time the family tree moved down several generations to the celebrity, the royal name was buried. such an amazing and important history in their family, and it disappeared, just because the female didn't get to carry on the name.

This was the coolest UA-cam video ever. I seriously considered Egyptology as a career as soon as I found out it was one, as Ancient Egypt has been a fascination for me since I was 10.
I thought I was pretty well versed, however, I learnt some new things today. Thank you!
*fun fact:* cats were NOT worshiped because of their connection to death but because they got rid of poisonous snakes that could kill the Pharaoh, and got rid of the mice that carried disease. The original cat Goddess was Mafdet and was seen as a fierce protector of the home, and kind of morphed into Bast-goddess of protection and cats. Bast was the protectress, and defender of the Pharaoh. In later times Bast became the goddess of protection and blessing and was the protectress of women, children and domestic cats. She was the goddess of sunrise, music, dance and pleasure as well as family, fertility and birth. In other words cats are dope.
She kinda dismissed cats as no big deal, though I always heard and read everywhere (I know everywhere is not a reliable source) that cats where worshiped like gods -- or at least that they where pretty important. Hence the amount of cat statues, mummified cats, drawings of cats, etc. Is this a myth? I really would like her to speak further about that.

@@starfall0 Cats were mummified because again of their connection to protecting the home from snakes and disease carrying mice. Bast is also the daughter of Ra the sun god, and again protector of the Pharaoh. She was very important and thus cats were seen as beloved and important by association. Cats were also mere pets in the home as well. Cats weren't the only animal to be mummified-sacred creatures such as birds, ducks, fish, dogs and cats.
Only things and people of importance were mummified, since it was expensive, and given good resting places, which is how the theory that the Pyramids of Giza were built by slaves was debunked. The workers who built the pyramids were given a resting place right next to them-slaves would never have such an honor since the Pyramids were homes to the Pharaohs. Also because Jews didn't exist during the time in which Pyramids were built.
Yes I was surprised to hear they didn’t name cats but then I realized what naming something means and how I believe she is miss understanding their spiritual and mental out look in this one are ..
To name something is to own it .. if you up hold cats as guardians of the gods and by law even they were held sacred I know also happened .. then maybe not acting as if you can go around giving them all names you come up with self was actually a response to that sacred status.. instead giving them all one title that describes but not limits them to being a pet was the concept :)
I find it hard to think in this one area she was right on they valued dogs more or was lack of value to not name them ... as during a famous battle with the Romans the Egyptians has lost simply because Roman army places cats on all the ships then tossed cats at people and all scattered them among the battle field .. which lead to Egypt surrendering all because was against law to harm a cat and so they refused to fight and risk killing one cat to point they rather of gave up own empire and lives ..

It may not be accurate at all, but the time it was made in, I think it’s at least a nice representation?
As in, “hey look how cool Egypt was/is!” And not a “hey look how savage Egypt was/is!” Because when I watched it as a kid, it made me want to learn more about Egypt and the general regions history.
Moving forward all us movie lovers should be more critical of the representation, but we also have to remember that some movies could be used as a “what not to do” then banished all together.
I love that her husband just strolled in to offer translation help, then was never seen again.

It's a pitty that their English is not good enough, because I really would LOVE to play this video in my class... And... you know what? Maybe I will, after all, trying to translate it myself for them or something. It's sooooo accurate and interesting and... perfect! Congrats!

I'm a professional entomologist (I study our little 6-legged friends, the 'bugs') and I LOVE THIS MOVIE, one of my absolute favs of all time. BUT my gosh, poor scarabs. Such a bad example of our lovely little buds. Scarab's don't fly well, don't crawl fast, and do not eat living flesh (there are some exceptions to the rules, as with all things/beings, but you never get the trio or even two together haha). I keep the cuties as pets and take them to outreach events all the time. Unless you are dead and half decayed or something with a very very thin epidermal layer, aka skin (and absolutely tiny) like a small frog, you have NOTHING to fear from a scarab. Most... ok mostly all, are cute little dung eaters that help to clear waste we'd prefer not to step on. PS most of their cute little mouths don't even have the capability to bite if they'd like.
Again, love the channel, you helped me a lot throughout the pandemic. You ever want some help on insect related things, just contact your local beetle gal.

I mean I'm actually super surprised that the film wrote actual sentences in hieroglyphs. It was so cool she was able to read what the prop designers made, additionally huge props to the prop designers for doing the research to get those details correct!
I'm just in awe of this woman, she's living the life. I remember when I was a kid and obsessed with ancient Egyptian culture and mythology: I had all the NatGeo magazines about Egypt and a bunch of maps, posters and books, and I would always get up really early on weekends to catch documentaries on the Discovery Channel and such (oh, to long for simpler times, when History Channel didn't mostly talk about aliens all day). I actually almost went to college for archaeology at one point, and am now studying Image and Sound Design with the intent to specialize in art direction and costuming, currently dipping my toes into historical costuming, so Colleen is out here living the other flip side to my dream life and killing it. Truely iconic.
