When she was talking about how intense all the scents would have been all I kept thinking was how nearly every product we use on our clothes and bodies is scented. Scent is still a big part of our culture for sure, although not with the same religious and ritual connotations

Perfumes were important in the old days because otherwise people smelled bad. When the temperature is 102° in the shade...and there is no shade... There's a lot of sweating going on. Add to that the fact that bathing was done in oil and not soap and water and you get stinky people. Gotta throw some herbs and resins around to cover it up.😂😂
I would love a video on female pharos. How they came to power, were depicted, treated after thier deaths. I know they tried to erase Hatchepsut but was that the norm or was she just wildly unpopular.
That would be a great topic for a video - Hatshepsut especially is fascinating and her story is more complex than is often presented.

cindy S.Melecio - Pharos (pl. Pharoi ) is neutral in gender (as lighthouses tend to be) though in the Greek, Pharos (as in The Great Pharos of Alexandria - One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) does take the masculine article (Ο Φάρος). Pharaohs, on the other hand, were
almost exclusively male - though there are a few notable exceptions of female Pharaohs (Hatshepsut and Cleopatra are the best known).
I just love learning about the history of beauty and stuff. We never hear about this in school

I just finished reading “Ancient Egyptian Magic” by Christina Riggs, it definitely gives a good overview of the topic, and it’s a beautiful book to look at, which is always a bonus :)

Perhaps this is too picky, but it seems odd to refer to Cleopatra as Greek. Macedonian, mostly, or perhaps Hellenistic, but not much Greek in her bloodline I believe.

Interesting that experimental archeology has not tried to reproduce Egyptian makeup. Mass spectrometry from remains in pots and jars should have given clues as to the underlying mediums and binders and surviving mortar and pestles an idea of how fine the grind was.
I will actually have to double check recent scholarship - perhaps there is more information about that topic! Thank you for your interesting comment.
@@VintageEgyptologist actually, it might be interesting to reach out to Lisa Eldridge here on UA-cam. She is a makeup historian and at one point was the creative director for Lancôme. In her most recent book she breaks down Egyptian makeup and dissects the particular resources and ingredients used in some detail. Very interesting stuff. According to her book, from what I remember, the makeup was not only used for aesthetic purposes, but was *functional*. It’s chemical makeup was able to defend their eyes from diseases like trachoma, though don’t quote me on that.
I read somewhere that Kohl was used around the eyes on both men, women and children in Egypt to protect their eyes from the intense glare of the sun.
Also check out Erin Parsons! She's made several videos experimenting with reproducing something similar to various different cosmetics that have been found based on what was in them. She isn't a historian, but I really like her approach!

This is the kind of knowledge rarely given more than a passing mention and yet, to me, is the quality of information that I feel furthers our connection to, and understanding of, a people that lived thousands of years ago. Videos on the minutiae of Egyptian culture help to humanize, to add color to, a picture of the people who actually walked and lived amongst the streets and temples we hear of most often. I’m off to check out the vintage makeup video you did with Michelle.

I have to mention that the youtube captions interpreted Hatshepsut as hot chocolate. But, more importantly, I'm very happy to see both of you discussing historical concepts of makeup. I am a woman, and I have mixed feelings about makeup as it currently is. To know that makeup has been around for thousands of years, and has been used primarily, or at least, most ubiquitously, in the context of celebration and merriment is nice to hear. I'm able to lessen my skepticism of makeup through confirmation that makeup has indeed been worn for fun rather than for societal approval.
Fixing Hatshepsut now - I am committed to "no more craptions!"

So, wigs were like hats.
When thinking about how ancient civilizations handled make up you naturally imagine us modern people travel "back in time" to look at the make up first hand. What I think would be very interesting would be to have ancient egyptians travel "forward in time" and hear what they have to say about our make up, skin care products and wigs. I imagine it would be a rather lively discussion! :)
I’m a practicing witch, and a lot of what we are taught claims to be Egyptian in origin, could you possibly do a video on the magickal and spiritual practices of Egypt, or if there was an equivalent of an “Egyptian Witch”? Such a fan of the Drs. Darnell, keep up the amazing work, you guys ❤️

Going even deeper. I was raised in hoodoo and Ifa which is closer related to kemetic spirituality than paganism( im also a rootworker) and I will tell you that these forms of spirituality are sacred because they are ancestral, and basically... you cannot ask someone elses ancestors to " work" for you. Of course you can still learn the concepts etc.. but as far as being able to use it for divination etc.. its a no. A lot of things that are African are ancestral and very complicated.

well it cant be 'accurate' because nobody knows what she wore as a fact. it can be historically inspired but thats about it and lets be honest, they aren't going to get Gal Gadot and not exploit her 'sexy' factor. I do hope they go more Greco Roman with her styling but with the outrage about her not being 'black' I imagine this film might never come out...

@@adavis222 3/4 Macedonian Greek + 1/4 Syrian/Persian mix. Not Egyptian or black. Her ancestors were from Macedonia and in Egypt as rulers they married brothers to sisters to maintain the Greek royal bloodline and purity.

@Luna del Rey I think the person meant that by stating Macedonian Greek because modern Macedonia and ancient Macedonia have different borders now. Ancient covered less land, so most of modern Macedonia wouldn't cover Alexander the Great's homeland (only a small portion of modern day Macedonia is ancient Macedonia) Hope that made sense I'm really bad at explaining stuff 💖
I've seen so many statues, pictures and read some literature but never knew that their actual hair was showing underneath. I assumed it was a styling choice of the wig hair, and until now hadn't come across that info
I imagine its kinda like 18th century wigs. Everyone knew they were wigs so they didn't bother trying to make them blend or look realistic. They took them for what they were as opposed to our modern use of wigs which is meant to be very 'natural' looking. Hell, even the 1920s they had those metallic bullion embroidered silver and gold 'flapper' wigs which were entirely made of emberoidery thread (or some such similar material)

It's interesting how little things have changed in terms of the wigs being obvious. It's a total status symbol just like the rich ladies in Socal who have 10 pounds of hair extensions. Nobody without 4C hair has a tree trunk sized ponytail, they want everyone to KNOW that they can afford to purchase pounds of human hair and then have it skillfully sewn in. It's like in 7-rings " You like my hair? Gee thanks! Just bought it!" Ari's massive ponytail is iconic partially because it looks EXPENSIVE.

Can you talk about marriages in ancient Egypt please?
There are possibly practical reasons also for the ancient Egyptians' heavy emphasis on scent, particularly incense. The scent not only masks body odors, but it keeps a lot of bugs away. I don't think it's an accident that many ancient religions utilized incense in worship and prayers; it would have been easy enough to correlate the burning of incense with what appears to be the deity answering a prayer for healing or good health when many annoying and disease-causing insects were kept at bay by the incense, to the benefit of anyone stepping into such a pungent atmosphere (or deity's "presence"). I don't know for sure of course, but I wonder if the scented cones may have helped address any lice issues, as there's a similar trick used for ticks with Vaseline. My expertise is in Sinology, and one of the simple methods some of the Chinese use nowadays to keep mosquitos away is to burn incense (smoking cigarettes also does the trick, but that's not the typical reason for a Chinese person to smoke cigarettes).
I love story about Egyptian beauty, games, romance, painting, worship. Anyway, the makeup is my fave story. I already have a makeup recipes of Ancient Egyptian in form paper. I love it too.
