  • John and Colleen Darnell read and discuss portions of the Book of Adoring Re in the West, commonly called the Litany of Re. To learn more about the Netherworld Books, you can read our translation volume: The Ancient Egyptian Netherworld Books (Atlanta: SBL Press, 2018). If you want to start learning hieroglyphs, we have an Instagram account: / howtoreadhieroglyphs , and we recommend Mark Collier and Bill Manley, How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs (Berkeley, 1998) as a beginner's guide.

    I love your work and your passion. I must be honest; at times, you speak in such a scholastic and academic manner that I am unable to keep up, specifically in reference to Ancient Egyptian history without having previously covered it in another video.
    Of course, that's my own ignorance causing the problem, but I say this to contrast with other aspects of the video. I became enthralled in you two after you seemed to settle into comfy areas, as you started explaining and describing things in a much simpler way that encapsulated everything necessary to understand what you were speaking of.
    I understand that you're targeting a specific audience, but I thought I would give my perspective, as I am fascinated with ancient languages and Ancient Egypt. I loved when you delved into the writings, the language, and what the language and writings contained.
    All in all, I'm enjoying seeing your works, as well as your channel growing. You have quite the opportunity in your hands, and I can see you will nurture it to its fullest potential. Looking forward to seeing more.

And how pharaohs would identify with a particular god. For example, Cleopatra VII identified as the personification of Isis.

    That’s so true what you said in the beginning too because it’s something that I have had questions on in reference to the scrolls found in the necropolis... they must have been also used by priests for those who are alive too, like amulet spells/encantations, hymns, ect i would assume that the “books of the netherworld” were, at least in part, based upon actual workings and instructions also used in one way shape form or another in other areas of the regular temple including magical workings done on statues and on people. It’s a very interesting topic because normally we just hear that they were funerary practices and it gives this impression that the Ancient Egyptians didn’t have a religion and thought process beyond death.

    The Darnells have a biography of "Thutmose III" on the table but refer to the king as "Tutmose III". Well done VEs! The god being invoked in the name, of course, is Dhwty. Greek scholars don't seem to have been able to pronounce that, so transliterate it to Toth, hence the nomen Tutmose or Tuthmose. Sir Alan Gardiner states in his great work on Egyptian Grammar that he follows the latter form used by the Egyptian scholar Manetho, and so apparently do the Darnells...and so do I. Love your work. Rowan.

It really reminds me of how in computer programming variables can have types much like the determinative here.) I knew there was a reason I really love scarab iconography... it makes for a nice subtle representation of my gender transition other than the popular Phoenix or butterfly. :D

    I really love you guys.... glad I found this channel. Subscribed immediately :-) I love ancient Egypt and hopefully next year I can go back and shoot some video’s for my documentary I want to make for those who still need to be tickled on ancient Egypt in my own language. Do you know what book I can buy that portrays the entire history on Akhenaten ? He is still my favorite pharaoh, next to Ramses II

    Egyptology question now. Why are there so few documentaries out there on the strange sexually charged Egyptian mythology. I'm not being weird or perverted, I'm genuinely interested. I've seen the one on the Egyptian errotic scroll, but they spoke very little about Hathor, Min and Qetesh?

    Could you please talk about cosmetics in ancient Egypt ? It is my main academic path but I don't know much about the historical aspect of it and I feel like it could be really interesting if there happen to be traces of such usage in ancient scriptures.

    Does the great cat slaying Apep with a knife also signify its divinity? As in it’s using a human tool for killing as opposed to its animal ‘weapons’. Showing that it is ‘higher’ or ‘more evolved’ than just a normal cat?

    • @VintageEgyptologist
      @VintageEgyptologist  4 роки тому +2

      That's a great question, but the knife really does seem to be for its hieroglyphic use rather than indicating the cat's divinity.

      They are basenjis, and that breed does go back to ancient Egypt! If you scroll through our IG @vintage_egyptologist, you can find more details (and in the future we will do a video about them!)
