    German fact: From the age of 16 onwards, Germans are allowed to buy wine or beer. They usually make a point of it on their birthday. (14 in private or accompanied by an adult in public). This and the fact you can drink in public, means they are instilled with moderation with a sense from a young age. In Bavaria beer is considered a foodstuff and can be consumed at work.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  4 місяці тому +3

      A foodstuff 😂 That's music to our ears and makes it far more acceptable 😁 Very interesting about the drinking age, thanks for that. We definitely felt like it was more acceptable to drink in public there because it all seemed so civilised. In that beautiful park there were couples and solo people of all ages just quietly drinking a can of beer. It seemed so normal and nice to see ❤️

    Yes, for instant mashed potatoes. I've just had some, leftovers from last night, with frozen veg cooked with it and chicken cooked in the air fryer.
    Instant mash doesn't go off, if kept dry, unlike potatoes that grow eyes or go mushy with age.
    Maybe you have to stir that drink so you're not tasting the layers before the booze? Just a thought. :)
    Cheers.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  4 місяці тому

      It is sometimes the simplest advice that helps, but yes, stirring might have been an idea 🤔😂 I can't remember if Stephen did or not. I'm not sure it's for us either way, its very bitter, but someone's suggestion of Sprite makes more sense than soda water.
      Yes instant mash has many benefits, it can sit there for ages until you need it and as you say, doesn't go green or grow limbs 🙈
      Thanks Jon, take care ❤️

    I am enjoying your honest insight into The Black Forest. I actually live in the Black forest and it is very different to living in the UK. You can legally drink beer and wine at 16 here but 18 for spirits so they spread it out and yes, they love their beer!! ... Aperol, not our thing!! 😂 I haven't actually been to Baden Baden yet can you believe and was only researching it yesterday ! Mnay footballers live there and from what I understand it is a Cheshire equivalent. Looking forward to next week!

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  4 місяці тому +1

      Hello, and thank you, so glad you've enjoyed our brief visits in the region 😍 Cheshire equivalent, yes, that makes total sense! You can 100% see how it would be a draw for footballers. I have to say, if we were rich, it wouldn't be our first pick to settle in, but it's very gorgeous nonetheless. How lovely to live in the Black Forest! Have you been there long?
      Staggering the alcohol age makes a lot of sense, and must help towards moderation to some degree

    Not to be too cheeky, between going up, going down, and going straight, there is probably just one option Stephen would approve of. Love and respect your take on life and reflections. You really are very lucky and it's always so enjoyable to watch your videos of your adventures. You seem to have had good luck with the weather (apart from a very few exceptions) but then that would be the upside about travelling in a Daisy.
    Baden Baden does look a bit Mediterranean, but being so close to France you can probably smell the posh baguettes I'm not surprised.
    Aperol spritz is mixed 3-2-1 parts prosecco, aperol, and soda (mineral) water. I like sweet more so try the aperol spritz with a bit of Sprite instead of soda water.
    And if you want to try another German weird but popular drink, try mixing your own Diesel drink: 1 part coke topped with 1 part beer (pilsner type is preferred I guess). Germans are fond of mixing their beer with weird flavors. Last time at a Bremerhafen Christmas market I tried Glühwein and beer mixed. Not my idea of a good combo.
    Cheers from Skåne!

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  4 місяці тому

      Out of all those options, no direction, i.e. not moving at all, would be Stephen's preferred choice most days I think 🤔 😂 Thank you for your great feedback and comments once again 🙏❤️ Despite our moans or "blips" we have never lost sight of how fortunate we are in terms of what being in a van has allowed us to see and do. It's been a real adventure!
      I think the majority of our time has been dry and sunny, but you're absolutely right, that's only because we drove to avoid certain forecasts when we could. Another plus of van travel, you're not tied 😍
      Now we love the idea of the Sprite replacing soda water, I think I'd give that a go next time, it makes far more sense. Not sure about the beer combo but we'd give anything a go I suppose 😂 Thank you and greetings back to Skäne ❤️

      @@comealongdear if you ever go back to Germany, do try the NW parts. Bremen in particular with the lovely Schnoor blocks in the center. Plus their Christmas markets are amazing. Usually a traditional one and a medieval one.

    Lived in Baden Baden for over a year, one of our cats was born there. 22:56 across the street is where I got married! There are very nice places to go: museums, the old castle and the black forest. The best is the Italian ice cream shop near that fountain, recommend the spaghetti ice cream. Baden Baden is really a spa town with many casinos, if you want to lose thousands. So geared toward those with ££.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  4 місяці тому +1

      Hello, oh what a place to marry! 😍 I hope you had weather like we did. It's sad that we had to skip so much - I especially wanted to do the castle, but we had to make a move. Baden-Baden is definitely aimed at the £££, but it's still so very striking and beautiful to wander around. I feel like it was lacking "normal" shops if you know what I mean though, groceries etc, at least in the centre. But it's got a niche and it sticks to it well!

      Good afternoon, and thank you 😊 Haha, yes it's a staple for non-cooks, a bit like instant noodles. But also quick if you're busy! Yes I think the UK is similar to Sweden with that view - and in fairness, often that will be true in some cases, but the stigma attached can be a bit unfair. Mobi Reception: plenty places in Scotland that don't have good phone reception, so totally get that. A lot is to do with sheer lack of investment by phone companies.
    Air Con: buy a cheap, hand-held fan, OR there is a device you can wear round your neck, they're like headphones, but inside, are 2 fans and you can have cooler air circulating about your neck. A more technical one is to immerse your wrists in cold water somehow/somewhere which WILL reduce your body temperature, also ankles - where yer veins are far more exposed.

      😂🙈 In fairness, "aye" isn't exclusively Scottish at all and a lot of people prefer to use it. It's a much nicer way of saying yes or yeah, so I've grown to prefer hearing it now. Sorry to all Scots 🙈

    I always look forward to your videos and this one didn’t disappoint either. Very interesting to see Baden Baden - lovely buildings. Beautiful park and countryside. It was a bit of a surprise to see the ruins of the abbey - don’t expect to see them in Germany for some reason - more common here in the uk. Thanks for sharing - only another week before we get to see where you will be next time. Stay well and safe.

      Thank you so much Irene ❤️ 🙏 Yes we were surprised by the abbey ruins too, but I'm not sure if Germany's abbeys/monasteries suffered the same fate as ours. I don't think it was as bad as what happened here, I think more survived in Germany, but I'm really not sure. It definitely felt unusual to see though and they were in such a beautiful location. Thank you as always and see you next time ❤️

      The best part about that is, we could drink and be obnoxious all day long, but as soon as we whip out Sense and Sensibility and quote a line, they'll think we're right respectable folk. It's a winner I tell you 😍

    Instant Mash! When we lived in a house it was a big NO. Not that we didn't like it, but why have instant when you can buy potatoes at the market for a fraction of the cost and it definitely tastes better... However since living on the road in Perse instant mash has become a regular for both of us. So much easier.
    With regards to alcohol, we found that most mainland Europeans don't have the same relationship with alcohol. Drinking to excess doesn't really happen (excluding the legal required village drunk) so having a social drink in the park is considered very normal.
    We agree on Baden-Baden, not one that's being added to our list.
    Much love Darren & Alison 🤟♥️

      Apart from as a quick snack hit, we'd agree, it wasn't used so much in the house, because we could cook our own potatoes without thinking about it. Now, of course, anything in this little van that saves time and washing up is a winner. I'm glad you've succumbed to the dark side now 😁
      Baden-Baden is still very pretty - there was a castle you could walk to that wasn't far, but we just ran out of time, so I'm sure you'd get something out of it. However, with so many pretty towns in Germany, it wouldn't be a big tragedy to miss this one.
      Much love to you both ❤️ 🤟

    The misses loves smash, but not a fan. Home made mash all the way. Heard of Baden Baden but never been. Great vid guy's & all the best lads.

      Homemade of course wins hands down, if only we could make it in 30 seconds with a boiled kettle 😂 Cheers Gareth 👍

    Yes to Idahoan mash! But we only buy it when on sale 😂 and then buy loads 😂. Thanks again for making our Sunday mornings fun! ❤❤❤ PS my brother adds regular pasta to his sauces, adding extra water with stock cube and simmers for 10 minutes with lid on. He told me today, after watching our spag bol video 😂. We haven't tried it yet 😂.

      Morning guys! 🥰 Thank you as always. Very pleased to see the instant mash love, Stephen is clearly not of sound mind 😉
      Oh now that seems a brave way to cook it, I'm shocked if that cooks the hard pasta down well enough to be soft, but I guess it clearly does work for your brother! That would help loads if we could nail that recipe.
      All the best to you both ❤️

    Absolutely no on the instant mash. It's easier to just cut up and fry a real potato. Baden Baden was lovely lovely.

      @comealongdear  4 місяці тому

      I mean, I don't think I'd find that easier, but I get your point 😂 You can't beat real potatoes, of course. And a bit like how homegrown potatoes always taste a million times better than shop bought. We have done proper mash in the van though and it's always a treat 😋
