Morning everyone, we hope you enjoy the video even if it might seem slightly different this week. A couple of things to point out:
Firstly, it’s funny how some things look better or worse on video than what you saw or “felt” in real life - watching it back, we both said how Hawick looks nicer than Galashiels, but the reality was the latter definitely felt more vibrant and overall more appealing in real life (not knocking Hawick, but just as a comparison and personal preference), the camera just didn't pick that up or maybe we were tired of filming at that point 😂 So yeah, interesting how things don't always come across on camera as you imagine…
Secondly, to clarify where we are in time right now, this a series of 4 videos we filmed in the UK that will play out while we're at work until early September. Because we can't film when we're working, we wanted to plan in advance to ensure we still had a few videos to release each Sunday before we head out on the road again. So if there's any confusion hopefully that helps 🙃
Thirdly, Stephen is doing well and thank you everyone for your well wishes. We're just glad it was something manageable in the end ❤️
And whatever we plan or do in the future, there are many more adventures ahead yet, which means lots of videos still! 😁 And Daisy is staying with us even if we did stop full-time vanlife, which isn't guaranteed at all. All just random thoughts at the moment!
Thank you everyone for watching, happy Sunday and have a great week all 😍🙏❤️

Wow, thank you very much for saying that, it's so good to know that what we do comes across that way ❤️ We just be ourselves and film our life and thoughts as is, which means a mixed bag of things, like any human. We know we're not for everyone, but that's okay, I think it would be odd if everyone liked us 😁 Thank you, we really appreciate the feedback 🙏

Oh so glad you are OK Steve! You do worry about your health but you need to enjoy life too.
Galashiels would be top for us as we go there to a garage there who are amazing @ostles of Galashiels give you superb service.
Also Jeanies cafe in Galashields is worth a visit people in the town are so nice and friendly!
We have thought about buying a lodge and renting it out that's also a possibility ❤ take care both of you ❤

Yes a lodge sounds an idea, worth looking into if you can do it 😁 Thanks guys xx

Love to watch you guys. Very real x like a soap opera last week 😮 domp domp domp x that’s the end of the drama noise.😊Glad all ok what a relief. Understanding wanting something more permanent. Have you watched the Lodge Guys x they have a lodge/caravan on a yearly pitch. They can be in a fab place x woods lakes etc x also shared ownership with council ?? More affordable. Just ideas x take care 😊

Thank you for your well wishes Paul! ❤️ Everything is fine now (well, it's a manageable problem I guess) we were both a bit shaken up and worried for a few days though and it does make you evaluate your situation. Whatever we decide (which may just be staying in the van because living in a home costs so much now 😂) we won't worry and we will figure things out as we go. I'm not one for fate, but this feels like a situation where things will take whatever path it decides and we'll go along with it ❤️🙏You're always so kind, thank you it means a lot to us 💖

Poor Stephen but you will be fine! I have had a lumbar puncture and you are right, it doesn't really hurt but you do have to keep still!! So glad you got seen to quickly and they have a diagnosis. I am on BP tablets too and still getting my head around the fact that I will probably be on them for the rest of my life! BUT on a positive it does mean that I can carry on with life and so must you. You seem happier now you know. I understand the wanting to settle down part...well a base! You have to put your priorities above all else and I know the van will always call you so why not have both, balance work and travel. Fingers crossed your channel gets more views and subs to help fund it. You guys deserve it. Oh and Dan, I love the random facts. My hubby is always coming out with random facts!! LOL. See you next week!

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  4 місяці тому +1

Yes the lumbar puncture sounded terrifying but he was totally anaesthetised for it so felt nothing 🙏 Except, and they did say this, when the needle occasionally moves and touches a nerve (or something) which I think did happen ever so briefly, but sometimes that can be much worse for people apparently 🙈
I hope the blood pressure tablets are working well for you, it is strange to think you could be on something for life, but I guess we all face it at some point and you've gotta do whatever to keep that body going 😁
The idea is we have a base and keep the van, even if we settled down completely we'd want to keep it as the van would be our "car" and we could still travel in it. But we'll see, we've no idea what we're doing yet 😂 Thank you ❤️🥰

Just watching your vlog, glad to hear you are ok. My husband had this exact same thing happen to him and like you the hospital couldn’t find anything but he still had a headache but nothing like the first one. So we insisted on him having an angiogram where they saw the aneurysm. He now has a platium coil fitted and is fine. But we did have to insist on the angiogram so if your not feeling better please go back to the hospital 😢 love watching your videos, you both make us laugh and we have then gone to some of the places you’ve been in our own van 😃 xx

We really enjoyed Galashiels and the video didn't show why in some ways, it was more a "feeling" if that makes sense, and all that surrounding countryside too was indeed beautiful ❤️ Very appealing for us and good connections to Edinburgh 😍
House sitting sounds like a great way to do things! Definitely another option we'd consider at some point.

Couple of observations from my side if I may of course :
    1. I think a lot of fellow subscribers will agree that these videos are not boring, in fact they're quite interesting when you scout the areas less covered by other guys.
    2. Dan, don't worry too much, you can never be prepared for all eventualities. You guys are doing great.
    3. I like to put some lentils as well in my veg curry, you could try that too.
    4. I find watching you cook something entertaining too!
    5. I used to live in Sheffield for couple of years, and enjoyed my time there a lot. A lot of friendly, very down to earth people, no filter. Consider South Yorkshire perhaps :)

We have been eating healthily at work and definitely trying to reduce salt and sugar. What's shocking is just how much salt and sugar is in all the "normal" stuff. A tin of macaroni cheese as a random example can be 50% of your daily salt intake, and all the lovely looking soups (tinned or fresh) are the same! @comealongdear  4 місяці тому +2

Yes I think in a bind someone will always help, it's just that bit easier if that person was me (Dan) 😂 But I've never enjoyed the idea of driving. It was the first thing we discussed though when Stephen said, "let's go live in a van" and in nearly 3 years, there's been no issue with that whatsoever so I guess the odd time it might be helpful isn't necessarily enough to make it a "must" I guess.

Hi Guys. Thanks for sharing more about yourselves and glad you were seen to promptly at hospital. So excited about Scottish Borders trip and lots of places to visit there, such as: Floors Castle in Kelso, Culzean Castle near Ayr and loads more places and of course the scenery. Can I ask you about any Smart Motorways you travelled on. I have watched the odd documentary on TV about those and understand they can be a nightmare and downright dangerous, especially if you break down. Did you manage to stay in correct lane? I'm the driver here and glad to have my partner looking out elsewhere for me. It fills me with dread if we have to travel in the car on those down South.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  4 місяці тому +1

Good Morning 😊 Sadly the Scottish Borders trip was short and only to the towns in this video, so I've no doubt we haven't seen the best of it or shown it in the greatest light, probably because our minds were elsewhere somewhat on this trip. We very much enjoyed the scenery there though in particular around Galashiels. We must go back and I think we will next time we visit Scotland.
As for smart motorways, you know, I'm sure we have, but I can't say I remember specifically or if we noticed a great deal of difference 🤔 I will ask Stephen and get back to you if he's noticed anything significant. Your main concern is driving on motorways and roads down south in general due to how congested and busy they are 😬🙈 There's never a good time to hit the M25 it seems! Well, maybe 3 in the morning...
Thank you, all is OK now after the hospital scare so we'll take it step by step after that ❤️

@@comealongdear Yes, I think Galashiels could be a strong contender for property hunting. Your family could consider travelling by train to Edinburgh, then onto Borders Railway to Gala! What I find is, the fancier the vehicle, the faster I feel comfortable going faster, as you just don't feel the speed! That's why there are so many vehicles going, to me, far too fast and easily over 70 mph! Then I have to remind myself it's because they're driving a fabulous 'gas-guzzler' - and there are so many more of them on the road, with so many people taking out special finance deals to be able to afford them. Defo re health and revisit all that and make some lifestyle changes.

Of course, we are both human and prone to the sins and bad ways that cross our paths on this life 😂🙈 But Stephen at least is trying to change things a bit and is si far succeeding, even if it won't be the case every day and will allow for the odd treat here and there.
I remember you saying about your injury, I'm really sorry you have to go through that. Is there anything that can be done? We're glad you enjoy our videos though and happy if they give you some joy ❤️ Big hugs back to you in Ohio and take care! 🤗 ❤️🥰

As for my back, I have pain patches & a TENS unit that help sometimes. CBD gummies (cannabis) help to deal with the pain. I am avoiding the big pharmacology drugs. Physical therapy has only made it worse over the years. When I first started therapy, I left with a cane. The next phase, I left with a walker, the third phase, they had to take me out to the car in a wheelchair. I never went after that.
I really hope that things turn around for you guys & that something wonderful happens & you can find a home or a bigger motorhome. Maybe a lottery win would be in your future! Glad to see that Stephen is better after his health scare and hope he is back to his usual self, I was born in Hawick way back in 1955 and yes it did fall into decline after the demise of the woolen mills but I still love the place even though I live in Edinburgh now, I hope you can come back up to the borders some time and spend a little more time to explore the area, it really has so much to offer, stay safe and I hope everything works out for you.

Hi Kenneth, he is well again thank you as this was a while ago now, and he's back to his usual disinterested, dry self 😂 Ah how funny you're from Hawick originally! We're sorry we probably didn't do it justice (when it's a grey day it doesn't help), but we absolutely want to return because we are so grateful they have a campervan aire and we'd like to go back to spend some money in a local restaurant or something if we can. It seems an ideal place to stop en route into Scotland so we plan to return.
We want to see more of the Scottish Borders in general because the scenery was just gorgeous. Thank you again ❤️ 🙏

Sounds like you had a pretty tough time. Totally understand your desire to have a base. We will keep the van regardless so that will be a big help. Not rushing into any decisions and I suspect we'll be in the van for quite a bit longer yet! Either way, lots of adventures to come still. Selkirk: yes, not much to see at all and often a town motorists just pass through on their way to Carlisle for example, or back up North. Hawick was interesting, especially the flooding aspect and even parts of Edinburgh are prone to this now. Galashiels is of course in a valley and have been there many times, but we need to go now to the museum there. One major consideration here is its Borders Railway and you can jump on a train and take it right into Edinburgh and is surely a great boost to the town for commuters. Houses prices are bound to be lower than in England and the area you came from originally. Finances and family and job prospects will surely be major factors in where you decide to get a property. Will it be a doer-upper, brand new, a flat - and do you want top floor or ground floor, bearing in mind you'll want to think about your old age and climbing flights of stairs? I'm off alcohol, sweets, cakes, although I've not had a health scare. I can drink red wine like water! As soon as I heard it from the doctor I needed to lose weight, I have been losing weight now for about 9 weeks and slowly, but surely, doing so. Blood pressure, Stephen, will be a consideration here, as I'm 58 and need to be thinking about such things, cholesterol and all that sort of thing. My partner doesn't drive either and wish at times that he did! The only thing I can suggest you do is learn to drive in an automatic vehicle, so you can forget about gears, but there's a higher cost involved. The independence it gives is a huge factor.

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  4 місяці тому +1

Some interesting thoughts for sure! The connections to Edinburgh did seem great so that could definitely influence things in future, and yes, just so much more affordable than down south. We have rarely worked and lived in the same town before so commuting to potential jobs would be fine. This is all easier said than done of course, it's miles from our family and there are other factors. But they are all mere ideas and Galashiels is somewhere we really liked. The cinema was cute and that sold it to us to some degree 😂
Well done on losing the weight, it's no easy feat when you're used to certain habits and routines, but they can be changed, it just takes time. Mine (Dan's) blood pressure isn't wonderful either, so it's definitely something for us both to be considering. We are lucky in our current jobs that we don't drink a drop of alcohol for the weeks we're here (this one being 6 weeks!) and eat a lot healthier too so hopefully that goes some way to helping us. We're a lot better than we used to be, despite seeing us with beers etc in our videos. But you're right, getting older brings these issues regardless, it's just how we choose to deal with them.
Automatic driving would be great, but as Daisy is manual, if I were to drive, I'd probably prefer to learn manual, despite the upwards tick in difficulty. Whether I do or not, who knows at this point!

@@comealongdear Yep 'health is wealth' and we're the same: don't have a lot of money, so we must do what's right for health, especially as we're getting older. Also, what with our 'broken' NHS, we have to be prepared for paying for scans, procedures, without too much of a wait. Property: mobile home?! Would you consider that?

    • @comealongdear
      @comealongdear  4 місяці тому +1

A mobile home is definitely an option if the site fees are reasonable. We aren't ruling it out.
Yes, although the staff were great in the hospital, you could see they were pushed to the limits and that's why the waits were so high. You can see why anyone would pay if you can do it! But yes, avoiding needing to be there in the first place is as good advice as anyone can take I think.

As for Farm foods, you may say it's boring, but I, Darren shouted out " they still have Farmfoods in the UK. It's amazing what you miss when you love abroad. On second thoughts, maybe Scotland is a good option 🤔

It makes much more sense to be the UK's fault now that you mention it 😂 Just being on the roads is enough!
There are some gorgeous options to look at in Scotland, but we do have to think practically, too. A little Yorkshire town in the video after the next, very much grabbed our hearts and seemed a real possibility of a future dwelling. But, for now, all just ideas and little peeks. The van is still the most sensible option, and the trouble is we're still enjoying it!
Hawick felt like it could have been quite special, and perhaps one day it will again. The tower was indeed glorious ❤️
I'm glad a FarmFoods sighting caused some excitement 😂 There's apparently over 300 in the UK, it's just they are mostly out of town shops. That's the first time we've ever seen one in a High Street!
Thank you both as always, I am looking after Steve by dragging him into some terrible, prolonged activities to look at piles of bricks, that's my prescription of choice, and he'll bloody well enjoy it 😉 He's doing okay though, at work we've been insanely healthy (he ran 5k today for the first time). I suspect that'll waver when we visit my mum next week and get out exploring again, but by then it will have been 6 weeks of no bad stuff, I'd say that deserves a beer/ice cream/chips/all and lots of it 😜

SAH is linked with Hypertension and chronic stress. From the sound of your symptoms your body is trying to warn you that its state of health is not optimal. If it were me, I’d remove as much stress and drama from my life as possible, cut out alcohol completely and find a way to regularly exercise to help lower blood pressure. Reviewing nutrition and get back to fighting weight will help enormously. Gary, it would be very helpful for Steve, if you could drive. It would mean you could function if Steven was off the road and it would relieve the constant burden placed on a single driver. Take care and stay well.

You're so lucky you made it back to England where your medical is covered. I get bad migraines, sometimes, that feel like my head is going to explode.
I had a mini stroke, once, no lingering pain, but my words came out randomly, not what I was trying to say at all. I mimicked writing on my hand, so my son got me a pen and paper. I made a mark, but couldn't write letters. So frustrating.
My son was ready to call an ambulance, but I remembered an article I read, in Scientific American, decades before, where a doctor said speaking and singing use different parts of the brain, so he got his stroke victims to sing.
So, I sang, and the words came out right. My son couldn't help himself and sang back. It cleared up after awhile and I could talk again.
When I told my doctor, she said what it was and upped my blood pressure meds.
If that ever happens to you, or anyone reading this, just sing, so you can communicate. :)
I'm so glad everything turned out OK.
Driving can be nerve wracking, but it's easy, once you know how. Maybe just get your learners and have Steve teach you in big parking lots. :)
I'm surprised you have separate areas to dump black and grey water. It all goes down one hole here.
House, condo and apartment prices are astronomical right now. During our three week Evacuation Alert for wildfires, I seriously thought about selling my house and moving. The reality is, I can't afford anywhere else.
I would love to live in an RV, but, in Canada, you have to have a permanent address for a driver's license and vehicle insurance and a passport, if I wanted to travel.
I was waiting for you to slop some of that red wine into dinner. Then again, a waste of good wine. :)
    Cheers,
    Jon in rural BC, Canada

Morning Jon, god you know, we never thought of that, how lucky that it happened after we just got back 😬 We had travel insurance but it is nonetheless much easier being in your own country!
That sounds frightening what you went through, I'm glad you're well and it can be managed. What a fascinating fact about the singing though! You did well to call on that memory, and then for it work as well! How amazing, and strangely wonderful in its own way. I hope we don't, but if we ever need it, I hope we can call on that same knowledge 🙏 The brain is a fascinating beast. Very glad you're okay though, and another reason to look after blood pressure for sure.
Have you been okay during the wildfires? That must be a frightening prospect, it does very much seem to be luck of the draw there. You don't hear about them so much in the UK (of course, we have much less forest) but I do suspect the day will come when a big one rips through what little forest we do have left.
      I hope not of course!
Could you use someone else's address as a "base" to register at so you can still travel? It's often the only way around these things!
All the best to you in Canada 🇨🇦 ❤️

God you're right though, how did we miss the trick of actually looking at the property prices in the estate agent windows for the video 🙈 Bloody useless UA-camrs we are 🤦‍♂️😂 As you say though, its definitely reasonably cheap up there, and the connections to Scotland's capital city mean work might not be so bad to find.
You are right though, we are very lucky and grateful for all we have and do and it might be that we only give it up if we're forced to in the end because ultimately, despite the challenges and down sides, we have lead a happier life like this.
I think the constant tasty shocks and cheap beer of Germany might have played a part too, but yes the UK has its own part to play 😂 Fish and chips does actually feature next week 🙈 But overall, Stephen is looking after himself much better. He'll likely never be a saint, but it's a big turnaround so that's good.
We do have each other (we're stuck now, divorce is too costly 😉) and no we don't need anything big if we do settle again. We'll be okay...it's all part of the adventure! 😁 See you next week! 😍❤️

Real life is infinitely scarier, horror films are light relief by comparison 😂

I think you need to pass your driving test , take the pressure off Stephen or Steven. Would be beneficial if anything happens

It definitely would, although Stephen is 100% comfortable with the driving (and I personally dislike the idea of driving myself) it would be very useful for practical reasons as you say
