    Great video! But please spread the word: Schneeballen are a tourist trap! They are beyond dry and no local would ever eat them! Greeting from the Northeast of Germany

      Yes, they were very dry and we would not get them again. Thanks for watching!

    Loved the video! I took lots of notes on the food and drink!! We are heading through Thuringia plus Nuremburg for this year's Christmas Markets (and some time at the therme too!) Have a hotel recommendation for Nuremburg?

      Thanks for watching and please consider subscribing and giving the video a thumbs up. In terms of hotel in Nuremberg we stayed at Privat Hotel Probst. It was just within the city walls and an easy 5min or so walk from the train station. 10 minute walk to the main market. Simple but comfortable hotel. Breakfast avail at extra charge. Have a great time!

    Silly question but I need the know! 😅 are the ceramic cups offered as a purchase when buying the beverage?

    • @ruthandmartintravels
      @ruthandmartintravels  7 днів тому

      Thanks for watching and please consider subscribing.
      So yes you can buy the cups … most times you pay a deposit for the cup and after drinking you return the cup and get your deposit back. If you don’t return it the deposit acts as the purchase price. Our advice would be to have room in your suitcase when going to Germany (or other markets in other countries) so you have room to bring them back. We also had brought some flat sheet bubble foam wrap (bought at Home Depot for large plates - in the moving supplies section) because we knew we be “buying a few”. Cheers!

    Going to the Christmas markets in Europe is in my bucket list. Love how you presented the video. It shows the highlights as well as the downtimes and travel realities. There’s something about being a tourist and walking in a quiet town early in the morning! 😊

      Thanks for watching and appreciate the kind words! When the alarm clock goes off, we always question why did we set it for such an early time. BUT, when we get up and out and have the town to ourselves it’s all worthwhile!

    Thanks for showing the food, most UA-camrs concentrate on the lights and stalls buts lets face it we all want to know about the food. I have just subscribed ❤❤❤

    Hello, I’ve just found your channel and subscribed! My husband and I live in Florida and are going on a river cruise this November, sadly before the markets open up. What kind of backpack are you carrying? Great video by the way. Christmas markets is definitely on my list! 😎

      Hi there and thanks for watching, the kind words and for subscribing! We have a ton of content coming up starting in August with Morocco so stay tuned. Our backpacks are Wandrd PRVKE 31 - these carry our gear and other stuff on travel days. My (Martin) day bag is the Wandrd Veer with inflatable camera cube. Ruth’s day bag is a little bag she found in Austria - no brand, but we’ve seen similar all over the place in Europe. Easy to pick something like it up - I think she paid 15E so a bargain!

      Thanks for watching and appreciate the kind words! In terms of where we stayed:
      Cologne: Hotel Mondial am Dom Cologne: great hotel and super central
      Strasbourg: we stayed in an Airbnb which doesn’t seem to be listed anymore. Hotels were really expensive and in general we found Airbnbs cheaper.
      Nuremberg: Privathotel Probst: small and simple hotel near the train station (just inside city walls)
      Munich: Excelsior by Geisel (also near the train station)

    How much are the train tickets? You think eurorail would've been cheaper?

    • @ruthandmartintravels
      @ruthandmartintravels  14 днів тому

      Thanks for watching. FRA-COLOGNE was $66. Cologne-Strasbourg was $88. Strasbourg-Colmar Roundtrip was $62. Strasbourg-Nuremberg was $110 and Nuremberg-MUC was $50. So $376 total for two people. Point to point was cheaper than passes when I priced our itinerary out. We also booked as soon as they came available.

    I visit Cologne frequently (multiple times a year, plus usually yearly at Christmas) so I have a very special affinity there. (Strangely, despite my having been there pretty much yearly since 2017 during Christmasmarket time (except 2020), I have never been to the chocolate market. I think I've visited (almost?) all of the other ones! (You got the best feuerzangenbowle in cologne. I never considered ADDING amaretto shots to them.) (I don't like plain gluwein, I like some of the flavored ones - like the cherry one you had in Munich (maybe the one in dusseldorf is similar?) is good.
    Tartes flambees? Flammkuchen in Cologne. It's one of my favorite things to eat! (Maybe it's not too common too far outside of Alasce - i'm pretty sure the flammkuchen is based off of the Alascen tartes Flambees?)
    (We drove once from Cologne to Rothemberg ob der Tauber for a daytrip - which is about the same drive to Strausburg. Wonder if I could convince my team to Strausberg one of these years)
    Every year I say "I do not need any more glasses". Every year I come home with at least one.
    ("It's rainy!" Sounds like Germany in winter LOL)

    • @ruthandmartintravels
      @ruthandmartintravels  Місяць тому

      Thanks for watching and YES the feuerzangenbowle (with amaretto) in Cologne was definitely the best!
      Hopefully you can convince your team to go to Strasbourg - it was amazing!

    How did you get through the Paris airport so fast. We accidentally made friends with a concierge that guided us through the airport (at least 4-5 stops) and that’s the only way we made our connecting flight (about 1 1/2 hour)

    • @ruthandmartintravels
      @ruthandmartintravels  2 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching! Paris CDG is a monster of an airport! I (Martin) had looked at an airport map beforehand to get an idea of the layout and where we generally had to go (as we didn’t know our connecting gate yet). Then we just walked fast and paid attention to the signage as there are lots of turns. The longest part was waiting for the bus to take us to the other terminal and then the bus ride itself. As much as possible, we try to not have anything less than a 2hr layover as it causes undue stress but sometimes that is unavoidable.

    Sorry you missed the “big snowfall” on the Saturday before the 1st Sunday in Advent. I came from Leipzig via Bundesbahn the following Monday. Supposedly to fly the Lufthansa A380 home to Southern California. The flight was cancelled, but only for a day, so 1 extra day in Munich. The abundance of snow made night photography really brilliant. A lucky ending to 7 Christmas markets from Hamburg/Luebeck through Saxony, Thuringia ,Sachse-Anhalt and Bavaria.

    • @ruthandmartintravels
      @ruthandmartintravels  3 місяці тому

      Thanks for watching! Yeah, snowfalls that big are a blessing and a curse… great fun and I’m sure beautiful but wreaks havoc when trying to travel.

    Really enjoyed your video. Hoping to visit Cologne , Dusseldorf and Bonn in December 2024. We were in Strasbourg and Colmar in December 2018 when there was a a gunman who opened fire at the Strasbourg Christmas Market and killed three people. We were on lockdown for a while. We took a train to Colmar and was very grateful to be alive and enjoy another city. Did you all enjoy Cologne as much as Strasbourg ? Where did you stay in Cologne ? Thank you for sharing this time with us. Appreciate your feedback.

      Thanks for watching! Really appreciate it and the nice comments.
      We did enjoy Cologne a lot. It had multiple markets and each offered a different vibe. We stayed at the Hotel Mondial: maps.app.goo.gl/rn9a9GTb2sHBes2z5?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy
      It’s right behind the cathedral and 100 yards from Neumarkt. It’s a modern hotel so no character but we wanted to stay central with easy walking access to all given our time was short. It’s also a straight (no steps) walk from the train station.
      If you are interested in seeing more videos from us, please consider subscribing; we are currently in Morocco and videos will be out later this summer along with many more. Thanks again 🙏!

    Love this! Great to revisit some of these markets along with you and see some new ones. Will be traveling to Nuremberg this December, and surrounding area. Have to ask on the luggage need to upgrade this year and noticed you had a checked bag I think that seemed to be handling the cobblestones 😊 if you have a recommendation. It would be appreciated. Thanks!

      Thanks for watching! We have Away suitcases and they handled the cobblestones ok. Though they are four wheeled over cobblestones it’s best to drag them with just two wheels. Best of luck and enjoy!

    That one drink you've mentioned _"…including one lit on fire!"_ undoubtedly fits into the "Glühwein"-category but is (at least in Germany) a quite famous specialty named *Feuerzangenbowle* .
    Older Germans (and baby boomers too) remember a last century (1944) movie named the same…
