Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana Review! (Nintendo Switch) - The Game Collection!

  • Ys VIII Lacrimosa of Dana for Nintendo Switch is an Action RPG that was originally released on the PlayStation Vita and PS4 in 2016. The game has recently been ported to the Nintendo Switch, and this is my review of Ys VIII!
    Ys VIII is the latest in a long-running series of action RPGs that date back to the beginning of the RPG genre. Developed by Nihon Falcom and published by Nipon Ichi Software, YIII continues the tradition of fast action-packed combat, and above all else, fun! The game was originally released on the PS Vita and PS4, but has recently been brought over to the Nintendo Switch, which is the version I'm playing for this review.
    In Ys VIII you play as Adol Christen the Red-haired Swordsman. The story of Ys VIII takes place between the events of Ys V and VI, but it's important to note that you don't really have to have played any of the previous games to pick up and play Y's VIII. The game picks up with Adol and his best friend Dogi aboard the Lombardia, a passenger ship headed for Eresia. Unfortunately, misfortune upon the high seas sends the Lombardia to the bottom of the sea after an attack from a giant squid. Adol, Dogi, and the passengers aboard the Lombardia awaken upon a deserted island, a cursed island, from which no person has ever returned. It's up to Adol to try to gather the scattered castaways, fortify a settlement against the wilderness of the island, and uncover the mystery of this bizarre land.
    The concept of survival on a mysterious island is one I haven't seen play out too many times in RPG form, and when it does it's usually only for a few short hours at most. This trope lends itself well to the exploration aspect of RPGs that I've been missing for a while. I think that towards the second half of the game, the story started to feel a little drawn out, relying to a disappointing degree the convenient amnesia trope to keep the player in the dark, which felt a little tired. Aside from that caveat, the story was well paced!
    Aside from the unique setting for Ys VIII, a lot of the story of the game was stuff we've seen and played a few times before. And I'm not saying this is bad, but I wouldn't expect the game to be challenging anyone's worldviews any time soon. To put it simply, if this game was an anime, it would be a shonen, and there's nothing wrong with that! It's the kind of game where you can sit down, plug in a few hours, and put it down easily. This in turn lends itself well to playing on the Nintendo Switch or PS Vita. That said, the characters are lovable, the humor was hit and miss unless you're a glut for flatulence jokes in which case it was a gas! And there were definitely some sad moments in the game that reminds the player of what's at stake, a kind of stark contrast to the upbeat story up to that point.

      I haven't dug into Xenoblade 2 too far, so I can't really make a fair comparison. I think from the standpoint of pure battle mechanics though, I lean toward Ys, since it's a bit more of a pure action RPG. :)

      @@SuperDerek This is by FAR peak Ys. I actually just finished it for the first time, and I wanted to see what you had to say about it. The way they integrated the past was interesting, and I got really invested in finding out what happened to Dana. From the second she dropped out of her coma tree and into Adol's arms, I couldn't put the game down. 35 hours in the past two weeks.

    I remember Ys Origin being my first Ys game and that led me to get Ys VIII afterwards as I heard it was one of the best in the series. And man, Ys VIII sold me on this series as a whole. It's without a doubt now my favorite action RPG series and have since finished VI, IX, and 1 and 2 chronicles. Jonathan Mejia it's an awesome game it's totally worth it, the switch version is a better version than the ps vita because it has post game content, challenge caves, you can change the difficulty anytime, extra items and outfits, more dlc, a special dungeon that allows you to get an item to adjust your party so you can fight monsters with only ONE character for increased difficulty, different endings and best of all new game plus which allows you to pick and choose what to carry over into your new game save file like your items, weapons, armor, your levels, abilities etc. after I beat the game I plan on making my main character OP as fuck in a higher difficulty and solo all the monsters I fight

Switch is still playable and stable but imo the PS4 version is the definitive version of the game. I have been playing the game for a week now on my Vita (I thought they were closing shop so I rushed to play it).
    I play for few hours each day and as you said, it is easy to put down and pick up and carry on where you left off.
    this is my first Ys game, so my major problem with this game is that I know NOTHING about Adol (me) and Dogi (my BFF), but the game insists he is my best friend, I would rather have Hummel as my BFF.
    3:55 this is also one of the things i am not a fan of, how did she get a white towel? why was she nude & bathing after surviving a shipwreck?
    Overall: I like the gameplay and exploration aspects of the game and plan to play Ys 9 sometime in the future.

    If you haven't already, also give the other 2017 western Falcom release, Tokyo Xanadu a try. It's more narrative/character centric, while being less exploration heavy, so keep that in mind. I personally prefer it over Ys VIII and even last years Persona 5.
    Here an official Japanese Falcom Trailer for it (because the western publishers' trailers are pretty bad): ua-cam.com/video/RFpXVV4XHAY/v-deo.html

      Kay v R The story isn't like mindblowing or anything but it's more about the characters' writing. Their personalities and backstories are the main draw here. And I wouldn't call it a grind fest. If anything you'll find yourself grinding without meaning to because the combat is just that fluid and satisfying. But the game guides you along well enough that you kind of find yourself in the right place at the right level.

    I'm a big ys fan but ys8 is not the best one like some people claim it to be. The psp tittles were the best in the series as well as the new monstrum nox. The older games were a lot better than the newer ones. Ark of napithsi. For example. After ys 7 thr games became the same thingbover and over and thr music also lost its flare which is still decent by any means. A lot of people are delusional about this game as well. A certain youtuber even went as far as saying ys 8 is better than breath of the wild lmao🤣🤣🤣🤣 i stopped eatching his bideo after that. There is no game on breath of the wild's level and thats not even an opinion. Opinions are like assholes and everyone has one and some of them stinks 🤣

      Andrew Zurita After putting in 15 hours into the game, I was still struggling to enjoy the combat. The characters for the most part were irritating to me, thus I was having a hard time building a connection to them. In terms of exploration, there wasn’t anything really motivating me to do so.
      I understand that I probably didn’t give the game the time needed for everything to come together and that JRPG’s generally have a slower build. In my opinion, games should at least have some kind of “hook”, just like when watching a movie. Unfortunately with XC2, 15 hours in, I just didn’t get hooked and with a growing backlog of games, I simply put the game down and moved onto the next thing.
      To all the Xenoblade fans, my opinion is not meant to put the game down in any way. It’s clearly an amazing game with a huge fan base, it just wasn’t for me.

  • @SuperSupersoda
    @SuperSupersoda 4 роки тому

    I just found this game and started playing it a few weeks ago. There are two things I love about this game, that it does maybe better then any game I've played in a while:
    -first, the storyline is good, but its not something that will addict you to find out what happens next all the time. You sort of know that Adol gets out of this okay because, if he didn't, he couldn't star in the next game. What I love about it is that this is the perfect game to play for a few hours, put down for a couple of days, and you have zero trouble remembering where you left off and what the next objective was. The game is memorable, unbelievably memorable, due to the combination of great characters, a Robinson Crusoe/Gilligan's Island mash-up of a plot that I hadn't seen before and a simple, easy to remember, central story conceit. I'm a busy guy, a computer programmer/IT guy by profession, and the nature of my job is that some days, I have to be at work all the time and others, I have a ton of time to kill. Y's 8 is the perfect game for someone like me, because I can pick it up and have a blast with it when I have a free evening, and then, a week later, when I have another free evening, I can play another few hours and have no trouble sliding right back into it.
    -the second thing it does well is related to the first, the game is amazingly fun to play. I always felt like the most fun to play game I've ever played was Final Fantasy 9 and Chrono Trigger. Not the best games I've ever played, but the most fun to play games. I like colorful, I like an upbeat plot, I don't find doom and gloom and the world is ending type plots to be fun to play, unless they are well set up and earned (like they were in FF 9 and CT), I don't like overly complex battle systems. I always felt the least fun to play game was Final Fantasy 12, which is why, despite being an excellent overall game, I've never replayed it. The gambit system took way, way too long to set up properly, which killed the fun factor. I want to bashing in bad guys, not lining up whether my party members will cast heal at HP below 40% or below 30%. Y's 8 I can get into immediately, the control is intuitive, the story is general well paced and colorful and upbeat. Its fun to play.

    • @Walamonga1313
      @Walamonga1313 3 роки тому

      FF12 is just boring and tedious. FF9 while slow, at least is fun and has great atmosphere. Ys VIII though, incredibly fun. And quite challenging too! I played on Nightmare and that was the sweetspot between hard but rewarding, tanky but not too much enemies.
