Since I live in Europe, I was lucky enough to be able to get this game when I was a kid. Actually, my father got the game, and he was also playing it, while I was watching. I think it was the best gaming experience I ever had in my life, without even touching a gamepad. The story, the graphics, the music sucked both of us into this world, and the feeling of immersion was insane for me. Dungeons like the giant tree felt so large and it was an undescribable feeling, being lost in this maze while being so far away from home (the underworld). Needless to say, this is my favorite game, and I don't see this changing ever. I should probably play it again from start to finish with my dad sometime.
Terranigma is, even today, the best game I ever played in my life. Hearing the soundtrack in this video made me weak. I recommend this game to anyone. It is a once in a lifetime exoeriment.
If there’s any one virtual experience that will move you, it’s Terrangima. I finished it last year after dealing with ongoing troubles in life, and couldn’t get it out of my head for at least a month after I finished. A few months afterwards I suddenly lost my Grandpa - Whom I was incredibly close with - out of the blue. I then, suddenly had a close friend pass on this past December. Given the timing of completion and these hard losses, it has left a permanent mark on my life, and can truly say that it’s now my favorite “Videogame” ever made. (And believe me, that’s saying A LOT coming from a guy who’s held FF VI, Chrono Trigger, A Link To The Past, Yoshi’s Island and Mario RPG in the highest regards) Overall this masterpiece WILL make one reflect on life, loss, rebuilding and so much more. It’s heartbreaking yet beautiful all at once. I fell in love, and now hold Terrangima even closer to my heart than before, and am sure will continue to until my final breath. If they made a movie based on it I can confidently say it will be universally acclaimed. Thanks for taking the time to let the world know how great it truly is, Derek.
Daniel G the numerous ways it messes with your expectations as it funnels you toward actions that you either don't want to take or end up regretting without being cheap or obvious is remarkable and jarring
This game is one of those epic journeys that will touch your feelings with memorable scenes and characters, there are so many thign to like about this game, its almost perfection, its kind of a bummer that they had to cut some stuff out of the final release it would have been even better, can you imagine? Actually I myself did a nice video tribute to it, maybe you will like it: ua-cam.com/video/46KnHkxGx4c/v-deo.html
Not only is this one of the best games on the SNES, the soundtrack is transcendent. The Way Home is AMAZING. It's simple, just strings, a flute, and a bass line, but once you know how the game ends, it becomes one of the best tracks ever written. Beautiful doesn't even begin to describe that track. I got a repro cart a few years back. Glad I did. HARD as hell, but worth every second of time invested into it.
I am just playing through this for the first time right now. My only regret is not playing this sooner. Even 20 years after its release it still feels fresh and is honestly one of the best SNES games I've ever played.
I remember when I was 10 years old, my brother got an emulator for the laptop and I played chrono trigger and earthbound on the emulator but I saw this game on his emulator list and I never heard of the name terranigma and so I went ahead and went into the game. The intro already hit me... as I was playing through the game, I couldn't believe how I've never heard of this game and how great it was. The soundtrack was like nothing I've heard before or expected to be in a game. When I watched this video... I wanted to cry because of the crysta theme. I swear that one day I will get a English translation copy of this game.
finished this game yesterday and to this day I can confirm its as great as people say, 100% worth playing, and 200% recommended, this game touches some serious nerves and hooks you up, It's safe to say this game is easily one of the best games ever made, but dont trust me, trust all the gamer reviews. The ending is as hard and sweet as it can get....it literaly brings tears to my eyes
What a compeling and passionate introduction you did ther my friend!! I have to say that when I first set foot on the map screen!! With the full mode7 in action and that AMAZING music! It sends me shivers of emotion!!
Amazing game. I love sense of hopeful melancholy that hangs over this trilogy. There are some really powerful and sad scenes throughout. Did you ever play The Granstream Saga on the PS1? Its actually a 4th entry in Quintet's series, but most people don't know about it. Its a good game, but definitely not a masterpiece like the previous 3 were. Terranigma is a perfect ending for the series anyway.
Absolutely. The tail end of the game really caught me off guard, and I had never felt so conflicted about an ending before, which Miyazaki left open to speculation intentionally. And yeah, I actually just beat the game a few days ago, and I couldn't agree with you any more. :)
I agree CT is the best SNES rpg ever. Yes, CT tops Terranigma and ToP and Star Ocean. But that hardly means that Terranigma sucks or anything. In fact, Terranigma is great. One of the top 3 action RPGs of SNES (SD3 takes the top).
I didn't know this for a while either, but the blue magirocks actually do replenish once you used a spell. So the amount of magirocks you collect throughout the game only determines how many spells you can hold at a time.
I had a sega back in the day and but a friend of mine let me borrow his snes with terranigma for a week or so. Time flew by fast! It will always have a special place in my heart. It totally blew me away at the time and it still holds up. Great game
I've been waiting for this one too. Ever since the 2nd episode of The Game Collection, when I first reviewed Soul Blazer that one day I'd be reviewing Terranigma. Glad I held off though, I think I wouldn't have been able to do the game justice that early on. :)
Your reviews are awesome SuperDerek! I've overlooked Terranigma even though loved many of the RPGs you reviewed (chrono trigger, Lunar, Wild Arms, Earthbound, Super Mario RPG) - will def give Terranigma a second shot
Great review. Terranigma truly is one of the lost classics for you lot in North America. And luckily for us in Europe we actually got a SNES RPG that North America didn't get. Terranigma almost made up for the lack of Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger here. I own one of the English PAL copies, complete in a box, and I would never part with it. Nice reproduction by the way.
This is such a awesome game! Easily one THE best SNES games and action adventures ever made. Even level grinding is fun in this game. It has a huge variety of different settings and much to explore. A game worth to sink some life time in it. Its sad, how all the people recommend something like Secret of Mana so casually, and not even mentioning Terranigma. Maybe, they haven't played it....... CHRONO TRIGGER BEST GAME EVER!
I may have Commend this Video allready Years ago, but in case i didnt´t...Play Terranigma !!!🤩😍 I´m from Germany and had the luck to get the Game on Christams Eve in my Childhood. I can totaly understand you, the Game is just Awesome and the Music is from another Dimension. My absolut favorite 16 Bit Action-RPG and on my Top 10 Games of all Time. Thank you for this Lovley Video for this awesome Game. Greetings and stay Save.
Man I agree with this review!Terranigma is my favorite, everything in that game just blew me away and it was so easy to get fully immersed into. There really aren't words, one just has to experience it for themselves.
I'm about to start a one-sitting playthrough of the game on my Twitch channel, in fact. Should be starting in about 15 minutes if you're interested in seeing some of it in action. :)
Coming back to this video after 7+ years, I still love to see that Dragon Force on display behind you. Terranigma is uniquely special game. One of the very few that brought be back to the era of gaming as a kid. This video is really good, and does this game justice.
I feel so sad that this game was never released in the US. I played it on an emulator years later and it is easily my favorite SNES game of all time. It's always nice to hear other people who give this game the appreciation it deserves. Great review, you captured the passion I most feel after playing this game.
Dear Derek, thank you for this wonderful retrospective review of Terranigma. Terranigma was without a doubt the best RPG available to us Europeans up until the release of Suikoden in April 1997 and also the best game of the 4th generation console era for us Europeans. It's such a pity of what became of Quintet after this title, and it's so unfortunate that our friends in North America couldn't experience this masterpiece in 1996.
Came upon this game, completely unbeknownst and decided to give it a try. I understand everything you’re saying and it’s spot on. This is much more than a game. It’s the never ending story of games. It pulls your in and don’t ever let go. I actually thought I was almost done watching a video makes me realize I haven’t even begun.
I'm going to make a review of this game as well after all Terranigma is my favorite game of all time good job spreading the word on this amazing underrated gem of a game I hope in the future more people get a chance to play this Masterpiece
I would get crazily happy about a handheld remake of this! I love it! It's one of my absolute fav games ever. The soundtrack always gives me chills. The characters and world feel so much sympathetic and accessible. It's a game I never get old of playing.
I beat this for the first time last night, I was tossing and turning all night thinking about where Ark’s adventure ends and what the game was trying to tell me. Even this morning at work this game is still drawing emotion and wonder out me. I’ll never forget that beautiful credits screen as long as I live. Thanks for making me aware of this masterpiece Derek. Of all the questions i’m left with, the one that i’ll be asking the longest is will I get to play a game this powerful and awe inspiring again? Probably not, but thats what makes it such an unforgettable experience.
magic rock regenerates! it works as a bottle containing magic and you can refill it. I played Illusion of Gaia firts and my sister Terranigma. We were always fighting on which game was better, but after i saw this video several times, decided to play it. And oh GOD what a game... the music is so amazing that im thinking on making flute covers. Thanks for this amazing review
Incase if anyone is wondering, around Neotokio in Terranigma there are Enix neon light ad things around the tops of shops that have Japanese text (Even in the PAL Versions), the text is advertising Dragon Quest games ^-^
First of all, thank you so much for being one of the few UA-camrs who actually hides jump cuts with cutaways and zooms. Jump cuts are ugly and should never be used outside avant garde French film.
The Soul Blazer series needs to make a comeback, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma since all three are part of the series. And exactly to why they haven't been released to Virtual Console is beyond me but what isn't beyond me is they deserve to have a comeback and that is something I don't joke about for that reason.
This was my favorite game on the SNES as well. The ending made me tear up and this was the only game that ever got this reaction out of me. I replayed it last year (20 years later) and I'm not ashamed to say it still got to me. This game is simply a masterpiece and your review does it justice.
Played Blazer and Gaia, started Terranigma but never got far before I forgot about it. This video made me wanna restart, and seeing Dragon Force on the shelf behind you really made me wanna play that again too lol. Oh how I wish I still had my Saturn...
Magirocks are not non-regenerative. Using a spell refunds all Magirocks spent on its purchase, and I found spells to be very useful on some boss encounters (when you are not overleveled).
You have outdone yourself sir. I have played through the first 2 dungeons on an emulator at least 8 times, and each time I stop because I really want to play it on actual hardware.
This was my first time actually beating the game as well, and I'm glad I did it on a SNES, If you've only experienced the first couple dungeons though, I've gotta warn you that you haven't even hit the tip of the iceberg that is the plot. Also when you play, you might want to use a guide before jumping in the giant crack, to help make sure you don't miss any extra content. ;)
When I was perhaps 10 or 11 I went to my favorite shop at the time, my local videogame shop and I bought Terranigma without hesitation, without asking info about it and I played it and eventually finished it and it took me a long time. Not because it was that hard but I kept loading my savegames to replay many memorable parts of the game and I just tried to stay in these areas where I didnt want the plot or the music to stop. Now i´s 32 and I still play it. People call the best of the best sometimes creme de la creme, or the beluga kaviar of ... or cristal among champagnes. I cant do that with this game because when I play it I am in my own world. I´m directly part of the game while I stretch it out as long as I can. This game can never be forgotten because it lives within anyone who ever played it.
Dude, great reviews. I just stumbled upon you yesterday when Illusion of Gaia came up in conversation with a friend who wasn't familiar with it and I looked for a gameplay video to show him. Until then, I had no idea it was made by the team responsible for ActRaiser, one of my all time favorite games, or that it was part of a series of sorts. Plus, I only played it for a couple of weeks as a kid when I received my pre-ordered copy before getting sidetracked, never to return. You've definitely convinced me though, except now I'm debating whether I should maybe start with Soul Blazer. Anyway, I just wanted to drop a line and show my appreciation. Thank you for the excellent work and I look forward to watching more.
I remember playing this game on emulator and got upset when I had to reformat my harddrive and I forgot the name of the game as a kid. I'll have to play it again and actually get to beat it sometime.
I dig the beginning part of this review. Sometimes it's hard to find new ways to describe certain games without having to reference another game or franchise. "Oh it's kinda like [insert other game name] so you'll like it. Trust me."
The magic system is actually useful. In the great lakes cave there is an enemy that causes lethal poison. In order to heal it you need either special type of medicine or a wind pin. The second one being the easier one to obtain.
In fact, you can get a PAL copy, and have your NTSC-region SNES modified with a 50/60Hz switch and a region-lock switch. You need both because the game actually detect the region-lock AND the Hertz (power on the console with region-lock at On and on 50Hz, once you see the game booted up, switch to 60Hz). And since it's the only game worth playing that never made it in North America, and able to detect both settings, i like to call this special mod the "Terranigma mod".
I love the voice and calmed tone of this guy... And yeah... this game is huge... romantic, poetic... as they made it before (sometimes). Old RPGs are God. Just God.
hey there.. coudnt agree with you more... i love this game too.. such a rich story and such emotions.. got me hooked from the start to finish and still love to go through it... nice to see someone else who loves the game as much.. keep up the good work..
Hi, just found your channel today and I've been watching your playlist non stop, I'm a huge rpg fan myself, although from the UK so some of these games are harder to get hold of :P but after watching your reviews I've really wanted to play certain games I've overlooked in the past and I'm now gonna try them out for myself :) Cheers for the great content, and keep it up!
Great video!! You are definitely one of my favorite UA-camrs! The story sounds really good. The combat looks rad. The graphics look superb for a SNES game!! I have been loving your channel. You make some great reviews!! Thanks for adding me on Google+ by the way. :)
This is my favorite game of all time. The music in this game is just beautiful and I really dont no any story like that. I am so glad that in germany Terranigma came out in a big box with the original walkthrough-manual. And i just OWN IT !
Its such a great feeling when you discover a gem like this game. When I first played it in 1995, it instantly became my favourite game, and to this day has only been usurped by one game - Suikoden 2.
Any recommendation of recent games that follows that same style? I am on a hunger for Alundra and Terranigma style of games. I never have never played Terranigma before, but since I bought Snes classic I have “included” some games in it. It is amazing
+Superstar Games The cartridge he has is a reproduction copy that can be found on ebay among other places. There never was an official North American release, that's correct.
I was so invested in the world, the NPCs and the little sidequests that the big bad villain in the game ended up just being a treat for reaching the end ^^; I wholeheartedly agree with this video and any fan of oldschool action RPGs will probably enjoy this quite a bit :)
I imagine if Crono Trigger and Terra had a conversation, it would go like this: CRONO: I touched the hearts of thousands of people, what did you accomplish? TERRA: I touched the hearts of only a few hundred, but I am still better... CRONO: How are you better than me then? TERRA: Whereas you touched the hearts of thousands, I touched the hearts of a few hundred, 100 thousand times.
I love that crazy plane scene; now I feel like playing me some Pilot Wings! If Terranigma is that awesome, then I'll definitely take your word for it and experience it for myself! Thanks SUPER DEREK!
I have a very interesting history about this game. After i finished the game, a couple of friends came to my house and i started to talk about how i loved to play Terranigma. Then i started to explain to them the plot and the history of the game. After a few minutes they were both with tears in their eyes... This really happen!
A really touchy review. And since it's my favourite RPG as well, I totally understand where it's coming from. However I have to admit that storywise Illusion of Time/Gaia is hard rock to swallow, too.
I would also say no, but if you played it before Terranigma, you will get some references in Terranigma, but you wont miss anything important. But still, play it IoG anyway, just to make sure you dont miss a great game.
Just recently finished it and went straight to see your review. Definitely an underrated gem. My favorite game of all time is still Chrono Trigger, but this one was also an amazing experience.
I was always postponing trying out Terranigma, until I watched this video. Thanks to you, I got to experience this stellar game. Now it's amongst my favs on the Snes! :)
Really great review. I still haven't played this game because I want to play a real cart. Been thinking of importing the Japanese version or building my own English cart. So does this mean that you are going to review Granstream Saga next?
Great video. The story really is every bit as good as Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 6
I agree entirely. There's only one thing Chrono Trigger did that I wish they did in Terranigma as well: multiple endings.
Super Derek And I also wish that terranigma had a better translation.
I am Keinz, i monitor towns economy
London's growth is
*100 Percent*
For story, I'd say Terranigma surpasses CT and FF6. Esp the ending.
Very expansive..... just bought it from eday pal UK for 225€(very good condition).

This is part of the beauty of the game. It transcends generations.
Terranigma is, even today, the best game I ever played in my life. Hearing the soundtrack in this video made me weak. I recommend this game to anyone. It is a once in a lifetime exoeriment.

Thanks for taking the time to let the world know how great it truly is, Derek.
are you religious or spiritual?
No other game had such an impact to me in my whole life than Terranigma 🙏
me too

Oh man, the feels.
Something about the Crysta theme gets me every time and makes me want to go back and play this game again.
Its like an alternative life that we have long forgot...
Crysta theme can bring me to tears...

I beat Terranigma. It's amazing, what a find! It's already my favorite action rpg of all time.
still watching this every now and then this is your masterpiece video for sure derek this is the one that helped me find your series
I hate how people say chrono trigger is the best snes rpg ever if they haven't ever heard of this amazing masterpiece

I think out of all the games I've seen you review, this looks like the one I'd like to play the most.
Awesome review!

I´m from Germany and had the luck to get the Game on Christams Eve in my Childhood.
I can totaly understand you, the Game is just Awesome and the Music is from another Dimension.
My absolut favorite 16 Bit Action-RPG and on my Top 10 Games of all Time.
Thank you for this Lovley Video for this awesome Game.
Greetings and stay Save.
This is my favorite game of all time. Great review, this game deserves to be talked about.
Terranigma might just be my ultimate favorite game. It left a huge impression on me as a child and it still resonates with me today.
No other game on the SNES has moved me emotionally as Terranigma. This review does it justice. Kudos to you, sir!
Same here. I was so conflicted about the ending. Miyazaki was a master of twisting the knife. :)
Man I agree with this review!Terranigma is my favorite, everything in that game just blew me away and it was so easy to get fully immersed into. There really aren't words, one just has to experience it for themselves.
"Favorite game on favorite console" ... wow, there you've raised my curiosity !
I'm about to start a one-sitting playthrough of the game on my Twitch channel, in fact. Should be starting in about 15 minutes if you're interested in seeing some of it in action. :)
Small correction: Magirocks are not unrenewable. Once you cast a spell that requires one, you get the Magirock back in your inventory.
Coming back to this video after 7+ years, I still love to see that Dragon Force on display behind you.
Terranigma is uniquely special game.
One of the very few that brought be back to the era of gaming as a kid.

you got a lot of comments here but just wanna add: was linked your channel from a friend and im loving it!
Ok, You convinced me!! I shall play this game as soon as possible!!!!!
I feel so sad that this game was never released in the US. I played it on an emulator years later and it is easily my favorite SNES game of all time. It's always nice to hear other people who give this game the appreciation it deserves. Great review, you captured the passion I most feel after playing this game.
So. If I could have a copy of this game, it would be great,
***** You really ought to focus on acquiring a copy. I'm very disappointed in a distinct lack of Terranigma in your videos. ;)
***** Or try a SNES Emulator you will enjoy it!
+BeatEmUps to me, this game is better than the legend of zelda a link to the past.
Dear Derek, thank you for this wonderful retrospective review of Terranigma. Going to buy a copy today!! Had this game when I was a kid, but never really finished it... Can't wait! :)
Awesome review bro... your voice over work is excellent!
Thanks man, when I first started I think my voice work was one of my weaker points so to hear you say that means a lot to me. :)
I beat this for the first time last night, I was tossing and turning all night thinking about where Ark’s adventure ends and what the game was trying to tell me. Thanks for making me aware of this masterpiece Derek. Of all the questions i’m left with, the one that i’ll be asking the longest is will I get to play a game this powerful and awe inspiring again? Probably not, but thats what makes it such an unforgettable experience.
Great review my one of my favourite RPS’s. So much nostalgia. I definitely need to free up some time to play this gem again.
This game's OST is legendary.
Omg... thank you. THANK YOU for giving this classic hidden gem a proper review!
Believe me, it was my pleasure. :)
magic rock regenerates! it works as a bottle containing magic and you can refill it.
Best game ever. So much nostalgia. Your reviews are amazing man. I love it.
First of all, thank you so much for being one of the few UA-camrs who actually hides jump cuts with cutaways and zooms. Jump cuts are ugly and should never be used outside avant garde French film.
I have just ordered a copy of terranigma.. this review tipped me over the edge to actually get a copy 8D
That's excellent! I really hope you enjoy your time with the game. Get ready to shed some tears though, man. :)
Great review Derek!! I haven't yet played my copy yet however you have enticed me to do so.
This game is simply a masterpiece and your review does it justice.
agreed
I honestly can't get enough of it.
Nobody told me about it.
It's almost as if... the game... found me...
And I'm so glad it did...
i have cried too at the ending, never a game have made me feel so strong emotions
Yep! I've gotten this correction a time or two over the years. Wish I could update the video, but I can't. Thanks for watching though!
Also when you play, you might want to use a guide before jumping in the giant crack, to help make sure you don't miss any extra content. ;)
I don't jump into any cracks without the help of the internet................ever
Wow, thanks a ton, Shining Sun! That's exactly what I love to hear. I'll do my best to keep you entertained! :D
Trust me."
It's been years since I played it, and still when I hear any of the music, my heart...
¿Se sabe el motivo por el cuál sacan Secret of Mana en formato físico para PS4 y el Final Fantasy VII y IX remaster solo en la Store?
Thanks +Mattbroad1994! I hope you have fun! :D
Great video!! You are definitely one of my favorite UA-camrs! The story sounds really good. The combat looks rad. The graphics look superb for a SNES game!! I have been loving your channel. You make some great reviews!! Thanks for adding me on Google+ by the way. :)
Hey thanks Benana! And thanks for always commenting man, :)
How does he have a Terranigma on a US SNES cartridge? I thought it was only released in Japan and PAL regions.
+Superstar Games The cartridge he has is a reproduction copy that can be found on ebay among other places. There never was an official North American release, that's correct.
Excellent review Derek! I must play Terranigma now!!!
My job here is done then. ;)
Super Derek love your review style! I'm on the hunt for Terranigma!!
Never played it. Got on my hacked Vita. Will play soon. Okay!?!?! 😉
I’m playing it right now ... best game ever
Nice review, I can definitely see that you love this game by the way you talk about it.
I was so invested in the world, the NPCs and the little sidequests that the big bad villain in the game ended up just being a treat for reaching the end ^^;
I wholeheartedly agree with this video and any fan of oldschool action RPGs will probably enjoy this quite a bit :)
It is still my most favorite SNES game - a game I never regretted to buy myself.
what do you think of the quintet trilogy overall?
Some of my favorite SNES games, for sure! :)
Will it work on retron ?
I imagine if Crono Trigger and Terra had a conversation, it would go like this:
CRONO: I touched the hearts of thousands of people, what did you accomplish?
Thiago Sturiale WHY ARK!! WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!??? sob sob damm you GAIA light or dark you're a .......

A really touchy review. And since it's my favourite RPG as well, I totally understand where it's coming from. However I have to admit that storywise Illusion of Time/Gaia is hard rock to swallow, too.
For me the atmosphere was the favourite part. The underworld part alone was a unique atmospheric experience par excellence..
dragon warrior 7 has the same/similar story. would you agree?
I played this on my Wii through modding, I wish it came to the US, this game is fantastic. One of my favorite games of all time.
it's necessary to play Illusion of Gaia first?
Nope :)
I would also say no, but if you played it before Terranigma, you will get some references in Terranigma, but you wont miss anything important. But still, play it IoG anyway, just to make sure you dont miss a great game.
150 quid 8 years ago... well, now it runs for 350 easy. Repros are 20-30 quid
Terranigma is a game that... after 15 years of not playing it I hear a random melody from within the game and I know instantly its from Terranigma.
I'm glad that I could help. :)
I played soulblazer & Ilusion of Gaia, i´m missing Terranigma i definitely will play it, great review!
Best action RPG on Snes for me,good Memories of great old times on my past life!!!ever had a special Place in my Heart ❤
I cry always that I remember that goat in the hole. I want to save her, but the script does not leave me
Really great review. I still haven't played this game because I want to play a real cart. Been thinking of importing the Japanese version or building my own English cart.
So does this mean that you are going to review Granstream Saga next?
Yep, you bet!
Just so gorram beautiful! XD I'm telling you, quintet is incredibly underrated. Great video!
I agree. Quintet is so awesome, which is why my most wanted SNES game right now is Robotrek. Really excited to give that game a shot. :)
