  • The legendary Ys series is one of the longest running JRPG series ever and has been around for over 30 years now. With its newest installment 'Ys IX: Monstrum Nox' only a few weeks away from a western release, we wanted to take a look back at where the series all began. The first entry 'Ys: Ancient Ys Vanished' initially came out for Japanese computer systems in 1987 but would be re-released near countless times over the years. This retrospective is going to focus on the Chronicles + version from 2013, which features brand new graphics and cutscenes, a remastered soundtrack, small narrative changes, slight QoL improvements, etc. As a huge fan of the franchise who hadn't played the OG games until now, it was really interesting to see where the roots of the story started. Check out the full video to see our thoughts in detail! Also, I played this on normal mode for anyone curious. Meant to mention that in the video.
Thanks for watching everyone! If you enjoyed this it would mean a lot if you could either like it or leave a comment with your thoughts. For those that have played all versions of Ys 1, what is your favorite? Is it worth going back to play the true original after playing through Chronicles?
Stay tuned for more Ys content over the next few weeks leading up to the release of Monstrum Nox!

This has been an amazing 1st week with Ys. Ys 1 and 2 are incredible.

Great video. Recently played through Ys 1 and 2 last year and really enjoyed them for what they were. Just last week I played Ys Origins and having played the original two games prior to it, I found it really added to my experience and made completing it a lot of fun (just make sure to play the final hidden 3rd character for the canon ending that ties into Ys 1)

Thanks for the support as always. I just finished up the second one (video coming out on that soon) and really enjoyed my time with the first two games as well. Definitely not perfect as one would expect given the time of original release but charming experiences all the same. I originally played Ys Origins years ago but never beat it actually, sounds like I need to go back and replay it now though with a newfound appreciation. We’ll cover that one eventually too

If you don't like the bosses in the first two games that much, most of them appear again in Ys Origin, where they are vastly improved upon. In fact, I think Origin has the best boss fights in the entire series.

I initially played Origin a number of years ago now but I hadn’t played the originals before it. Having now played the originals, I think I would appreciate it much more so I plan on going back to replay it eventually as I’ve heard similar things as to what you’re saying. I’ll probably try to tackle Oath in Felghana and Ark of Naphistim before it though

I learn so much when you make videos for niche series. Thank you, and keep them coming. Did not realize how short Ys the first few Ys games were. Seems like Ys 1-5 are about 5-8 hours each, VI is 12 hours and then Ys Seven is what got this franchise off the ground.
I can literally beat Ys 1-5 in the same time as a modern JRPG like Tales. So maybe I'll give this franchise a shot. Wish I bought Ys Seven and VIII before they became ridiculously expensive.

8:38 you can press a button (depending on your input device) to display what floor you are on

Decent script and editing, and I know advice can come off as unwanted criticism, responded to with defensiveness, but if I may... I really think you should work on mixing up your cadence when recording the reading of the script. Every sentence in this video has the exact same rhythm of rising and falling intonations. It's a strange thing to practice, reading every line in a different way, or trying to read a script like you're having a conversation with a friend instead of a book report you're reading to a class in 9th grade, but it REALLY adds a lot to the quality. You're probably going to hit 6-digit subs anyway, but doing this will probably speed that up.
EDIT: I just watched a newer video of yours, it seems that you're doing exactly that. Great improvement in 2 years, pretty impressive, honestly.

"the bat is the worst boss"
Bullpucky. Dark Fact is an absolute asspain. Say what you will about the hitbox on the bat, at least it didn't have an instakill effect

Dark Fact was indeed pretty hard and I died against him a lot, but I think the reason why the bat boss annoyed me the most is because it’s just not a very fun or visually appealing fight. Dark Fact was a pain in the ass but I at least enjoyed fighting him more just due to the setting of it and how you actually fight him

That's what I'm saying! Bat boss took me 30 min in nightmare mode while the dark fact took me 4h...

The bump system is a really fun idea for boss battles. Even if those bosses end up being super hard.

Just finished Ys 1 a couple of days ago and couldn't agree more with pretty much everything you said.

Love this game never knew about it got both parts from the Google play store. Had similar gameplay to Alundra on the PS1. There are a few classics I keep running into like Lunar on ios.

    Never played an Ys game.
Got Ys 7 waiting on my shelf for the PSP. Hopefully it'll be something.

I'll mostly remember this because I had to defeat Dark Fact by playing with my aspect ratio. x3

Couple of potentially helpful points for anyone who happens upon this:
-If playing with an analog stick, I found switching the control option to 8-way, rather than 360, to be helpful for consistent bumping. In 360 mode, I found it easy to slide into a bad angle against enemies.
-There's also an option to enable info overlays on screen, which will actually tell you what floor you're on in Darm Tower.

    Darm tower does suck
Falcom : hold my Ys origin lol
