- Ys 8 review, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (イース VIII -Lacrimosa of DANA-) is a Japanese action role-playing game developed and published by the Nihon Falcom Corporation and the eighth installment in the Ys video game series. It was released in Japan in July 2016 for the Sony PlayStation Vita and for the PlayStation 4 on May 25, 2017.
On February 17, 2017, a worldwide release was announced for PlayStation Vita, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows set for fall 2017; however, rather than being published by long-time partners Xseed Games, Ys VIII will be published by NIS America.

When adol gets on a boat we get a new YS
When Adol goes on a drinking binge, we get a new Ys.
Scott Michael Hedge hahaha
Adol is so drunk ~_~
You'd think the sailors of the world would know better than to let him on their ships at this point.
Dead Sailors tell no tales
HappyConsoleGamer dude, it's because of you i went and bought Y's Origin digital on my ps4 system which on the norm price wise goes for $19.99 US, but purchased it on sale for a steal purchase of $5.99 and i absolutely love it!!!! I am 50 years old and i love and miss these types of games! Now i'm definitely going to be purchasing Lacrimosa of dana! I also Subscribed! Cool channel, awesome Gamer dude, keep it up!
Aw good for you!
I am absolutely enjoying this game so far. 50 hours in and i am completely hooked by the story of Adol, Dana and their friends. The game deserves far more recognition.
I know this is three years after the fact and even more for the game I’m about to ask… I had played and completed and was so hooked by it, that I went on to platinum it and that is memories of Celcetta on the PS Vita!! I was going to ask have you ever played memories of Celcetta? I enjoyed it more than the beginning of lacromosa of dana..
My favorite action RPG on handheld ever-
Play Ys IX it's even better
The soundtrack of this game is absolutely one of the best in jrpg history! 50 hours in and it still blows me away.
This is my favorite video game series of all time. So happy to hear that this is an Ys game worth getting excited about. Thanks for doing this review Johnny!
I hope that Breath Of The Wild makes a mark in terms of combat. The combat in that game was the first third person action game aside from From Softeate games that doesn't feel like button mashing.
JazGalaxy honestly botw didn't reinvent the action rpg genre nor open world, but it sure did had the best use of open world in npc and physics.
And no one has ever told you have shitty tastes before ?? Intersting
mohamed abdelfatah has no one ever told you have shitty assumption on what makes a game good or not??
Freddy Martinez Your mother told me
This game is an absolute masterpiece
Finished Shenmue II, had no idea what to play next. Walked into Gamestop and this was the first game I saw. Very excited to start this tonight!
try Xenoblade Chronicles 2 next ;^]
I've had the soundtrack on my iPod for an entire year, and now I finally get to play the game attached to it.
Gives me some Dark Cloud vibes this time around, I dig it
AlphaOmegaSin Alpha and Happy approve, its a day one buy
we need a dark cloud 3 already eh
Hey Alpha , do a video about it
Timothy Tapatio
Rouge Galaxy is been said it was actually the dark cloud 3 that we all been asked for.
personally it does looks like it have dark cloud vibe and elements but still, if it doesn't have the word " Dark " on its name then I can say it's not really dark cloud.
maybe Rouge Galaxy is a spin-off to the Dark Cloud games?
AlphaOmegaSin do a video about Dark Cloud man. We need part 3.
I am playing through it on the Switch right now and am in love with it. Maybe the best in the series.
I just subscribed. This is the first video I've ever seen of yours and WOW you are so well-spoken, I genuinely enjoyed listening to you. I love how excited about the game you sound, listening to jaded reviewers gets old but I really really liked that you clearly enjoy what you're talking about! Your cons sound completely justified, coming from someone who hasn't played this yet. I'm going to go download this now, it will be my first Ys game!
I just finished my play through on the switch. Needless to say this game has earned a special place in my heart, I wanna know if you'd do a video discussing all the links to other games this one had. I've not played any other ys games but I can tell there's several nodds to Adols previous adventures. Id definitely tune in to watch that video
I was also very impressed by the detail they put into the design. This is a great game.
I've been waiting for this game and I knew you'd be the first to review it. Great video! I'm so excited to play Ys VIII. Ys is alive and well in the gaming community. Thanks for always discussing it. More Ys please!
I definitely consider this one to be my favorite ys game that i've played. Glad you like it. 8 is high, but thought you'd rate it even higher. Thanks for the review
Hi i bought this and never played any of this series is it a good starting point for the series?
This video made my crappy day better, thank you! Like always your Ys videos are always a highlight on your channel ^_^
Every time you post a video about Ys, I gotta watch it ASAP.
3:26 😳🤣
Completely did NOT expect that lol!
Finally decided to take the plunge tonight and start a playthrough since it was one of the games available on Amazon Luna. It is absolutely fantastic so far! The combat and story are quite engaging and I'm already hooked after only 3 hours in. Definitely great for those that are a fan of the Xenoblade series!
See that actraiser box in the background. Ahh the memories.
Thank you Johnny for recommending it this game, and series, so strong. I have this game on disk for last 2 years but started only now and oh man...
What a wonderful journey it is. Although it starts way to slow (first 10h should've been compressed to 2-3h), when the plot unveils, I was so much invested in it that I hadn't even realized that I had already been 30h later.
Feel bad for not watching this review 2 yrs ago, because your review is outstanding. I've been a fan of Ys since Vanished Omen on the Sega Master System. 😎 Thanks for this review.
I’ve just upgraded my ps plus just now to play this on the recommendation by Jonny. Cheers my man.
Have you tried it yet?
I have 2 questions: First, do I need to play the previous Ys games to understand the story ? And second, is there local co-op ?
Nope and Nope.
MrJRPGcrazy Thank you
2 years later, but the latest patch on PC just introduced local co-op!
HCG loves the game so much, he's dropping f-bombs
You really a cool guy. You're really passionnated. A Big Hello from France.
Nice review! Been looking forward to this game for a long ass time. Will be my first Ys game.
Great review you did. I look forward to many more reviews.
Have my Vita CE coming soon!
Previous one looked really nice on the vita as well!!
GamezOf War i buy this game is amazing for the PSVITA 100% Recomended
My vita just sits around and I never touch it. Wonder if i should get this for vita or ps4
Christian Gasior ^Are you home all the time or your always out?
So I'm 2 years late to the comment board...
But I have to comment. I just wanted to say thank you for this review, I wouldn't have bought this superb game without having watched this. Ys VIII is one of my favourite RPGs, purely because of its gameplay. It's just so much fun!
I also bought Ys Origin off the back of this...and am currently very excited for my preorder of Ys Memories of Celceta on PS4. I haven't pre-ordered before, but I couldn't help myself with this one! Looking forward to your review! =)
This is my favorite Ys installment.
Just finished it, been playing it nonstop since I got it. Its great, definitely the best of the party-style Ys games. Only thing is the dialogue can get pretty bad sometimes, anyone who saw the medical student scene knows what I'm talking about
Been waiting to hear your thoughts! Just played the demo and it was fantastic. Can't wait to dive in on PS4 in a few weeks.
Looks pretty damn good. I still haven't played anything past Ys V but I'd love to get further into the series. Awesome review, John.
Do you think this would be a good game to start within the series? This one looks very interesting to me, I love the character design.
3:26 "A lot of fun to FUCK..........the enemies up with these." lol
The crazy thing is, I read this just as he was saying it. 😂
Thought the same xDDD
I started looking into the Ys series because of your videos and then tried the demo for Ys 8 and loved it. Getting the day one edition with the soundtrack and art book. Also gonna play all the remakes and Ys origins on my vita. Thanks for sharing about the series, it has one more interested player now.
Coming back to this review because this game is on steams summer sale
I am looking forward to getting this in less than two weeks.
I’m playing through it for the first time on my Steam Deck and loving it.
I agree on the map system. I have to flip through different maps multiple to try and orient myself.
Game was like 30 hours. Remember to grind out the quests to get 200 rep for the true ending. Its worth it.
Wow, you played it back in the days on Sega Master System. I played it in 1987 on MSX2 in Japanese. Took a long time to finish because i coudn't understand anything they said. It was lots of talking to everyone more times and try out things overall. Ys1 was a blast, but then came Ys2 which was way better and more fun then 1 because of also using magic.
I'm back tracking now. Just played Ys 1 and 2 again a few days back on PC. And now in English and i now know what exact the story is.
Playing YS 6 now and almost finished. Then i go play Ys Origin. I'm gonna buy them all on PC and play it all again.
I was the only one who finished Ys4 on the Snes ( since it is in Japanese ) of all of my friends. Last boss needed to throw neckless at him to hit him. I recall i had to throw both blue and gold neckless at him.
Really fun game Ys titles.
I really miss reall RPG games these days.
Final Fantasy is not RPG to me anymore. It is a weird platform adventure game now.
I've quited Ys because of Final Fantasy on the Snes.
When Ys5 came, i had a Playstation1 and didn't look at Snes games anymore.
I'm gonna play all the other Ys first then i start on 8 and 9.
Ys 10 is coming next year.
I have never play any Ys games, but I am willing to try one after listening to you and that soundtrack.
Which is the best Ys game on pc now?
If you want fantastic music, i would recommend Ys I and II Chronicles or Oath in Felghana on PC (or for the best versions of ys music ever, ys I and II on turbografx)
The graphics and style of the game looks like a Star ocean/tales mixture with y's content. I cant believe this game slipped past me. Definitely going to be playing this very soon
dude i love your videos , you deserve so many more subs .. my favs the old school anime videos .. never liked anime till you started talking about it .. i saw venus wars based on your recommendations and i LOVED it ..
I have the Vita version; it is the same basically with the graphics not being as poppy. The frame rate stuff isn't that common.
Picked up Ys Vanished Omens at Target in late 1988, if I remember correctly? Was a fan from that day forward. Thank you for sharing spoiler free content.
Awesome review you deserve more subscribers man
Two things worth mentioning... the Vita version has less content than the PS4 version, there is some significant content that's PS4 only. Second, the translation has some issues. I got a review copy too, and it's honestly depressing seeing how the translation stacks up compared to XSEED's work on the series.
Fishing?
Yes
Bought it yesterday after watching this review. Played almost til morning yesterday xD
Love it, it's so much fun. And the music... damn! Thanks!
Greetings from Croatia.
I love how you're a total Ys fanatic! :) I wouldn't have wanted to watch an Ys review from anyone else!
Actually, did you ever talk about Memories of Celceta? I know you talked about Ys 4 before, but never about the Vita version... or am i missing some videos?
Was my first Ys game i played so i really want to hear your opinion of it.
My first Ys was the Master System version of 1!!! I loved back in the day and made me a Falcom extreme lover for life!
The newer Ys games kind of remind me of what a modern crystalis would look like.
Ys 8 has SUCH a good sense of adventure and mysteries and discovery
Does the whole game take place on the island?
I've never play a Ys game but just by playing the demo I could tell the combat was really well done. I'm a fan or rpgs and jrpgs so i'm game!
Ive been waiting for your review on Y's 8!!
Uhm. Ys seven is also fully 3D and it's on the psp(and PC), so how is Ys VIII their first real big attempt at 3D?.
Ade07 The camera isn’t fixed
Did you pick up the physical copy of Ys Origins?
Happy to see your still pushing your love for these games 😁
You mean its the first 3D Ys with camera behind the character? Because both Ys 7 and Ys Celceta were 3D. They had the same map issues aswell. Falcom doesn't seem very interested in changing it.
This has some Dreamcast vibes.... totally digging this :)
Did you end up getting the true ending? I really enjoyed this game. Looking forward to the next one already.
VideoGameVictims
I dont know anything about YS games. Can you start anywhere or are the story's all connected?
There's a loose overall timeline that connects each story together, but each game is a self contained story on it's own. There's nothing you won't understand by playing Ys 8 first. I recommend playing them in order of their release if you can still get enjoyment out of the earlier entries though.
Can't wait to see the texture mods,
Oh my God that Sega box!!! dude you just made me so excited! My childhood senses just naturally came back and I got excited just looking at that box just getting excited about a new game! Man I miss when games were exciting haha. I just bought like 10 games this past month and I'm not really playing any of them. they're just not exciting like they were when I was a kid.
Just tried demo this morning. This game is AWESOME!!! I'm about to complete Ys Seven, but I already can't wait to play this game. And I probably buy physical PS4 version and digital Vita version, just in case. God how I love Falcom games. Thanks for the review.
P.S. Ys Seven just released today on PC, so if anyone, who doesn't have PSP/PS Vita, want to play it, here's your chance :)
Awesome to see another Ys game get released! It looks very inviting and like a really good and fun RPG adventure, a bit of an old school vibe from what i see.
Sounds a bit like Suikoden when you were talking about collecting characters and bringing them back to your base and using their different abilities and such. Great review Happy, gonna call you only Happy from now on :)
This game looks awesome!! Thanks for the vid, by the way I love your T-shirt!
I love that they kept the Flash Guard and the Flash Evade from Memories of Celceta. I fucking loooooooooove to use that in combat
6 years later and still playing this and MHFU on my OLED Vita since 2012 lol. THIS GAME IS A FERCKIN MASTERPIECE!!!!
YS7 was my first. Quick question. Are all the YS stories connected to each other? Or every time Adol gets washed up in some shore it's a new story? Thanks in advance.
I'm definitely picking this up. My backlog is ridiculous, stretching across multiple systems but I've finally accepted the fact that I may never catch up. I sometimes wonder if Im the only one who wishes more developers would copy Nintendos art style by making their games more bright and colorful. I use to love realistic graphics, but as I've gotten older, and returned to older games that defined my youth, I've noticed realistic graphics age horribly.
What a great review ! I'm replaying memories of celceta again until this comes out next week. I can't wait !! 😃
Want this!!!! Love YS. Have most all their games from YS book I + II on turbo cd , all the psp Collectors editions and vita. Nice review :)
Looks great! It also looks similar to Ys Memories of Celceta, that game was so much fun so I know I'll like this one too! The map also looks kind of the same and the only problem I had with Memories of Celceta is that there were some times that I really got lost! I love all your excitement and that you genuinely love playing games and you're not just doing it to make a video! Thanks for being awesome! Also what is your favorite Ys Game?
Thanks for the recommendation. Currently playing it now and having a blast. It's like I'm playing DMC but without the "sweat" parts of it haha.
I must say though, a lot of people say the soundtrack is amazing, and I agree for the most part I guess, but the rock(?) music kinda got old fast for me.
This is the the kind of thing that the Switch is going to need to survive from next year onwards.
Just came here right after watching Game Sack's Ys series video.
Its on sale on the Switch for $42 right now so I'm debating on buying it. Probably going to play the PS4 demo first to see how much I like it. Still hearing a good review for it is making me lean towards getting it.
I genuinely think this is one of the greatest JRPGs of all time. I love the combat style, environment, NPCs and enemies design but mostly love the story.
I've never played an ys game, is this a good one to jump in on? Or will I be completely lost story wise?
Picking up my copy on day one. Glad i preordered! I hate that summon night 6 keeps getting pushed back...x.x
This started out as a Vita game and it shows in the graphics. Still waiting on my CE but excited to play it.
Nice review! This will be my first YS game. Do i need to play the previous games to understand the story? Or are those games self contained like Final Fantasy and Yakuza?
Self Contained
I'm on chapter 2 for 4hrs.. the graphics is just amazing, can't stop taking screenshots everywhere
The soundtracks for this game was so good
Game is impossible to find physically at a decent price under 90$ including shipping so i just settled for digital download from the recent NIS sale and glad i did its a great game! Still wish i had a physical copy for this one since it is much better than i expected.
My man John have you ever played trails series
Would love you to do a spoiler section maybe at the end? I saw your Switch catch up on this game too and it made me buy the game on PS4. Loving it!
I'm so happy it's finally out in the west. Great review!!
Looking good! (Adol's art design looks a wee bit different, though).
This has been a great month with Ys games, as I have the collector's edition of this game pre-ordered, and I also have a physical copy of Ys Origin from Limited Run on the way. Liking the looks of this coming month.
Are you going to review YS Origins? That game came out on PS4, physical copies for it as well.
I knew it!! I was wondering when you were going to review this game!!
I’m getting into this series, starting with Ys I. It’s available on iOS. You got me into Dragon Quest, so I’m trusting you with this series! It better be good Johnny! Haha. Hope you’re recovering steadily. We’ll binge on your old videos I’m the meantime.
Playing this now on PC and enjoying it (yes, there are crashing problems to sort out still). To add to the music discussion, in proper Ys tradition the boss music has me throwing up the metal horns everytime it comes on - classic Y's with the boss music!
first time I've actually stopped to look at this series... I may be a fan here... about to purchase ys origins and this today!
Never played any of these games, but this video is convincing me to get this...
I love your enthusiasm for the series! ^.^
It would be hilarious if you called it why's for an episode randomly
