Bro please pin this so people know or share it because i dont see anyone talking about it. For anyone who doesn't have all the RE's and has ps4 or ps5, right now there is an amazing sale on the PS store. I paid 70 for the RE4 remake and i paid only 65 dollars for every single other resident evil in the store!!! Huge sale!!! There is 60 percent off some of them. Even the 20 dollar ones are only 4.99 rn!!!
Case of japanese people not understanding why their property was successful in the west. Like hideo Kojima letting go of David hayter. I argue metal gear would not have been as successful without his voicing snake.
Jared, the low res textures are just a result of bad pop in. I've tested this and basically sometimes the high res textures have a problem loading in for certain textures, mainly fabric. But if I wait or reload the area, the high res version will pop in. You could see this especially with the fabric that shows the Ashley piggyback areas. And yeah it annoyed the hell out of me too, so you're not alone in that. I found that if I turned off the extra terrain setting, there would be way less pop in and the textures were way more consistent.
I hope he's seen this comment or one like it as I've badly wanted to explain this to him in a comment myself. It is a weird issue I just want him to understand it.
Funny enough, if you add this to your updated “Every RE Game Reviewed” compilation video, your retrospective on RE4, plus the Every Port video, plus this one comes out to about 2 hours and 23 minutes meaning you’ve talked more about RE4 than any other game in the series
@@gamerskingdom4897 it's not tho. and i'm not wasting my time writing another long winded comment about it. you can debate me about it on cord in front of an audience or alone, whichever works for you
She knew how, she just wouldn't. If you set up a ladder for her to climb down instead of catching her, she'll call Leon a pervert for wanting to look up her skirt.
I love the og Re4 way more than remake but the island had way too much action it in. I think they've could have balanced the pacing more with puzzle, and stalker enemies
@@SourClout no clown if he said it had perfect pacing and the op said it had bad pacing you would have a different story. The island is the last part of the game its normal to be mor difficult at the end. Scram
At first i was like “damn, the knife breaks? Lame”. Then it totally made sense after realising how many mechanics they added to it. Now it feels weird to play 2 and 3 remake without the knife mechanic lol. But obviously those games would be way too easy when most of the enemies are unarmed slow zombies
That's not true.. a lot of them still have arms. And it's a darn shame you didn't have the knife to fix that problem lol.. biggest downside to the professional difficulty is not being able to rely on the Perry, because my god do I ever giggle when someone comes into sucker punch and their arm goes flying.. we need more dismemberment in video games.. shit we need more action reaction impact in games lol.. seems like we were getting better, but every time they try to jack up the graphical fidelity to get microscopic on somebody's cavities, you lose things like physics entirely or bodies that don't disappear... Bullet wounds you know all the things that are actually immersive to the actual activities you're doing.. as opposed to the things that you're running past lol.
I definitely don't agree with any personal attacks on Ada's voice actress, but boy howdy she was terrible lol. Felt like she just woke up before delivering her lines.
Meh,she decides to take the criticism she was getting and play the race card, calling all white people racist, saying any criticism she get's is because of her race and lying about being the first Asian to play Ada for some reason ect.....I'd say personal attack's are more then justified now, she's a racist pos.
Why not? She literally only got the job because she called other voice actresses racist for being white women playing Asians. She is a POS human. Her social media used to basically be obsessed with race. I think the fans chasing off a talentless racist activist is a good thing.
I'm gonna have to disagree with the original not being neccessery anymore due to the remake. I loved RE2 remake but it will never replace OG 2, I never played RE4R but I imagine its not gonna be diffierent for me.
The original is by far more necessary now. We've got two versions of RE4, VR and now the 2023 one, that cut and change things from the original. This one absolutely does not replace the original. It is good at best, just like RE2 2019.
I don't agree with harassing voice actors on their social media either but lily hiding behind the race card because she couldnt handle the criticism is also "bitch-made".
I don't know if she hid behind her race. Capcom hired her because of her race and when people had issues with that, they took it to her instead of the people that hired her. So to her, it looked like a bunch of people were pissed about someone of her race getting a voice acting job.
@AvalancheReviews Yeah I get that's where it started, and again I think it's wrong to attack her over someone's casting decision. I don't understand people's issue with the appropriate casting to source materials. I more so didn't like that it came to the race card and when she was called out on it she purged her social media except for a screenshot "explaining" white privilege. As if only white people had an issue with her performance/casting. Just not cool all around to me.
OG re4 is a game that works well with what it's doing and is also still unique and special in it's own way. RE4 Remake is a different game with a different interpretation and take on the same thing the original did. OG re4 is irreplaceable. For example, the indestructible knife allowed for a gameplay where a lot could be done with very less and that made for it's own kind of great rewards. A constant weapon that if mastered, could lead to increasing accumulation of resources to make certain section easier or even use them to attempt crazier feats for the player. Hell, mastering that knife promised an escape from the need of tighter resource management or the need for resources at all, which was an amazing reward offered by the game. It was an amazing reward of it's own and even presented a brand of survival horror that relied more skill, reflexes, speed, understanding of the machanics of the game and patterns of the enemies, deeper understanding of the game level structure and environment after repeated playthroughs as opposed to puzzle solving and resources management (there maybe more and there may be some overlap but the point is that the survival horror presented is different). The knife in the remake is now just another expendable resource that needs to be managed, even if it does new things. It's just a different game. Also Leon being able to move and enemies being adjusted around it does not make for a better game, just different. Leon not moving in the OG and the way the enemies were adjusted around allowed it made for a different kind of game that had consistent patterns and therefore predictable patterns to their enemies and enemies combat design that is SUPER fair (Good invisibility frames, good crowd dispersal, slower and more comprehensible invasive enemy advencements, enemies announcing themselves whem closing in from invisible angles and generally not attacking from out of nowhere, sounded projectiles and maybe even more). The game is almost mechanical and mathematical. That is what makes it special in it's own way and unique even as a 3rd person shooter in general. That is why it is almost irreplaceable.
I have been playing this game pretty much nonstop since it came out. It really is for me about equal to the original version. One thing that I kinda appreciate was the stronger ties to the overall RE continuity. Like Luis being one of the creators of Nemesis.
@@codieomeallain6635 Yeah, I'm sure a lot of people miss the connection. You find a photo that shows he was part of Umbrella Europe Lab Team Six. That is all that is stated in RE4 remake, but those with knowledge of RE lore know they were responsible for Nemesis' creation. It is a connection you have to make yourself, the game doesn't come right out and say it. That may be why they didn't mention it. Also, it doesn't really have a bearing on this game's plot, so that may be why too.
@@raulrojas9253 re3 remake is the only main re game i didn't play. i played re2 remake and thought it was overrated, making leon and claire have basically identical playthroughs got me bored with it really quick. in the original all 4 campaigns were different. my favorite thing about re3 was the randomness. finding different enemy types in different locations, along with gunpowder, ammo, and herbs was really cool. and just like i knew they would, they of course cut that entire aspect of the game. making jill look like a crackhead didn't help either. i so badly wish re2 and 3 had been remade on the gamecube using the same engine as re1 remake. i would have replayed those countless times without getting bored. when i see that area from re2 in re0 it makes me want an re2 in that engine so bad, but sadly that never happened. re4 remake was surprisingly good. aside from ada's horrendous voice acting i don't really have any complaints with re4 remake. i hope if they ever remake code veronica it feels more like 4 than 2.
OG re4 has one of the best pacings in any game. it's highly replayable and the enviorement is so varied that nothing overstays it's welcome. That comment aside, I agree with a lot of your review, especially the toggle quicktime events option, that sounds so good it should be free dlc
The change to Sadler from someone obviously posing as a religious leader with no actual faith, looking to leverage his control over this cult to gain power to a generic zealotry spouting true believer was pretty disappointing. It added nothing while taking away an actual facet of his character. I think that might actually pan out across the whole game, the Remake might have been updated to the current "accepted standards" but I strongly doubt its going to last the same amount of time as RE4. Not in the same way that the original REmake has anyway. RE4make is a fine game, well made but right now its just another good third person shooter, its impact and influence on the genre will barely be felt where as RE4 is still to this day guiding how games in the genre are made.
Yup, can't revolutionize gaming when you're pretty much copying mechanics from other AAA 3rd person games now. I almost think a Sony owned dev made this and not Capcom. Can't wait for a bloated boring open world time waster RE one day. Gonna have to backtrack hours ago to kill one rat for a lame side quest 10/10 masterpiece IGN. -_-
@@Gruntvc optional backtracking for resources was always a part of Resident Evil. What are you talking about? They didn’t have you kill rats or snakes, but lets not pretend like this stuff wasn’t present in other Resident Evil games. Stop being dishonest. And umm you don’t have to do any of that stuff…just like other Resident Evil games. The choice is yours. You can play the entire game without doing anything that isn’t required and be fine.
I have to disagree completely with the "forced cheesiness". The dialogue is cheesy but it never feels forced in any way, it feels more like Army Of Darkness to me (The situation is dire yet the main charismatic character wisecracks even when in danger) than when a director tries to force a "meme movie" like the sequel to Samurai Cop.
And 100% disagree with the voices. The new performances are clearly worse, Ada and Wesker are atrocious. Leon sounds dull but Nick is clearly trying. Krauser sounds like a wimp trying to sound tough instead of sounding tough. Luis was really good, Salazar sounded kinda the same but the lines were eh. Saddler sometimes sounds OK, sometimes does a weird accent that doesn't work.
I saw you in a tweet thread discussing a certain Crowbcat video. I still don't really get the accusations of him messing with the ambient soundscape. Even to me, the RE4make seemed more reigned in when considering the soundscapes department.
Digital Foundry made a video about optimized settings for RE4R and they mentioned the low quality textures-- it's an issue on PC and it's related to the texture settings + pop in. Give it a look, after following their recommendations I got the game running 30% better and looking great.
The cracked dialogue and bizarre tone whiplash is the heart and soul of the og game, I don't even think it's that far off from a lot of stuff in previous games. I just don't get the opinion of disliking camp and character when it's legitimately done well and isn't even a thing that is oversaturated in gaming. There's already a million other shooter or horror games where everything is serious strictly due to pre-conceived expectations of what that type of game should be like. To me that weird tone skating is the main draw of the game in a sea of media that is entirely focused on checking arbitrary boxes. RE4 is like James Bond vs. zombies, maybe it goes a bit further than that, but it never goes so overboard that it becomes Austin Powers vs. zombies. Look I'm just sayin' not one single time playin og RE4 did I say to myself "damn, I really wish this guy had PTSD from shooting an explosive barrel in a giant crocodile's mouth 6 years ago."
I can only think of RE4 and DMC 3 that manages to balance comedy and drama in that perfect way, DMC 3 especially but RE4 is no slouch, I am tempted to throw in the MGS games especially MGS3 aswell into the perfect tone switching between action, drama, 80/90's campiness.
He doesn't like re4 because it's different from re1-3, that's pretty much all there is to it. His re4 OG video misunderstood the game completely and after getting called out for it in the comments he backpedaled immediately.
@Mister Himura, The og was channelling the legendary energy of 1980s/1990s action films. The 2023 "remake" is for "modern audiences" who like cringe Marvel jokes. It's not funny.
27:53 yes, ammo drop way less because: 1.- Now you can recover bolts to use with the crossbow. 2.- The game drop all those materials to craft more ammo. I don't really now what to think about it. The craft system is a nice way to obtain the ammo you really want instead of what the game gives you, but it add a new step and also fills your inventory with junk. In the original, even in professional i rever really was out of ammo (thanks partially to savvy knife use). I was carring most of the time 20 or more shootgun shells, 20 or more rifle bullets, multiple grenades. The only ammo i was missing was magnum bullets but i guess that worked as intended.
So you liked this game because it was mostly faithful to the original, which you didn’t like, but since you didn’t like the original you’re also ok with the things that are different in the remake? This review should have been titled “I don’t yet know how I feel about this game.”
After watching several of his videos like that 4 hour long "Every RE clone" (which was a waste of time), I've found that this dude constantly contradicts himself. He'll recommend trash because a game has moderately kind of potentially decent story, he'll complain about not having enough influence in a game but then criticize another for making things too easy when making things accessible, he'll complain about having no way to defend himself in a game but then also say that there's too many ways to fight back, he will complain about how bad a game is but then say "I know this is surprising but hear me out" and will still tell people to play it. I don't take what he says seriously at this point, but his videos are still as entertaining as Michael Bay's Transformers movie to me. They'll give me a good laugh here and there with some of the outrageous shit he'll say.
I personally hated the og RE4 when it came out in 2005 for killing the genre and still do. I would pick every single tank control/puzzle solving over OTS action. That being sad I found RE4 remake better than the original considering the atmosphere, the more claustrophobic areas and some cut content like lasers rooms, rolling in a rail track inside a fire room inside a castle, chasing statues.. Definitely not a true survival horror but at times like these..no complains I guess
I personally do not think the remake is a replacement for the original, same goes for any of the recent remakes, especially last of us lol, and Dead Space. The only true remake of all time which just 100% improved and replaced its original, would be re1.
Yup, even the "good" RE Reimaginings don't have the same impact that RE1 2002 did. Plus, I just don't see RE4 2023 having the same impact the original had either. From RE4 alone we got: Dead Space, Gears of War, and Uncharted 1. Can't say the same when RE4 2023 is pretty much copying mechanics from other AAA 3rd person games. AAA gaming sucks...
Might as well be my new favourite game. I'm approaching my 30's and it's been a while since I game really got a grip on me. Well, this released and I couldn't stop playing. Finished my 18h hardcore run in under a week and went straight into a Pro run, just like that. I seriously can't remember the last time that happened. Now I have finished 3 runs and doing Hardcore No Merchant and it's actually an amazing experience. The only thing that can rival this is RE1 Remake but I just like to play this more over that game.
It's finally here! I think I honestly feel the same way towards this remake! I went back and played OG RE2, RE3, and RE4 after it and am now working my way back through the remakes. While I don't feel that RE2R has completely replaced RE2, I can safely say that RE4R is my new defacto way of experiencing that entry. The OG RE4 is still fun, but I just find this remake better in nearly every way.
Red 9 chads rise up! Great video as usual. I enjoyed the remake a lot as well but yeah I definitely have my issues. You really nailed the cluttered nature of the locations, which were a detriment in my mind. There are also some art direction choices that I don't particularly like as well. It in no way replaces the original but now after I beat OG RE4 I'll then pop in the remake lol
Something to add to your section on Luis his involvement with umbrella was with the European branch and as his photo shows he was a member of the nemesis team Also why he is so knowledgeable about parasites besides his phds/degrees. I'm sure we will get maybe a little more lore on him with the separate ways or what ever they do with the dlc.
I don't agree with RE4R being more fluid when it comes to movement. It's fluid animation-wise but original is more snappy when it comes to movement and shooting. They added tons of contextual animations such as getting up from grenade shock or barely scraping by a grab similar to RE2R but that usually delays player inputs. I also noticed a slight delay from going to shooting > knife parry to shooting again which is a strange decision imo. One of the reasons why RE4 felt so fun to play was how snappy it felt imo. Character never does anything outside of what player asks them to. Quick turns also felt "more quick" in original imo.
Finally putting this game down after my 7th playthrough on Professional. Fully upgraded the Sweeper, Handcannon, Primal Knife, CQBR rifle, starting pistol, bought the Infinite Rocket Launcher, unlocked Ashley Armor and at this point I'm just going through every section without getting hit and making the fights as cool looking as possible. I'll eventually do a NG Pro run for the cat ears but for now I'm gonna take a break. I said this after my 4th playthrough too but the game pulled me back for another three playthroughs. Haha. I've been playing this religiously since it released. It's even the first game I've ever preordered. The gameplay is close to perfection and I like the changes to the overall pacing, although I will say I prefer some parts of the original as far as music and atmosphere goes, but for the rest of it the Remake supersedes it in atmosphere and environment design. Having played RE4 OG and the Remake back to back, I can appreciate both for what they do and confidently say I prefer the Remake, but it stands strong alone without necessarily replacing the OG.
I got the deluxe edition with the OG soundtrack and I turn it on and off between playthroughs and its probably half the reason ive beaten it like 6 times now
Whilst I don't ever approve of harassment, do keep try to abstain from painting her as some hard done by victim. The woman was and is a talentless hack that tried to position her casting as some pivotal moment of progress.
I grew up playing the original re4 and never understood why someone would be opposed to a remake. There’s a bunch of kids who will never play these games otherwise. Sure it’s easy $$ but gate keeping games to the past is a bit counterproductive when older games complain about live service everywhere
Definitely agree that the story was improved, it’s still silly to a degree, but it isn’t shlocky anymore story wise now. I loved the original but i think i love the remake even more!
Ada this time around was voiced by Lily Gao. She portrayed Ada in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. She isn't my favorite Ada actress but, I've grown to like it. And as for the amateur comment, this was her first VO job... Though she sounded the exact same way in the film. I guess Capcom just wanted an Asian to finally play the role... Idk what their reasoning was... But after some time with the game, it doesn't bother me. The hate people threw her way was just so messed up... I hope she returns in another game.
Nah I hope her career is over. She made incredibly anti white statements about her peers. Why should we as fans put up with racists just because they're Asian?
It wasn't hate. It was criticism. And they most likely had her voice ada due to contract. Capcom isn't soft like America. They don't care who plays the character, as long as they're good.
RE4 was indeed my first introduction to Resident Evil so it actually worked out pretty well that I didn't need to know much about the previous games to enjoy it. I am definitely not biased either as I have played the original like 10 times and it is one of my favorite games to this day. I had a great time with the remake and loved a lot of the changes, but there were a few disappointments for me. The best change was the new level designs especially with how they integrated backtracking. The village was the most noticeable and it was great. Remaking the lake to serve as a way to go back and collect treasures or complete side quests was much more interesting than the original. Including more merchant side-quests was a nice touch although I wish there was a bit more diversity than just hunting rats or shooting medallions over and over again. The special monster hunt side-quests were great though. The knife was mostly a plus for me. I liked being able to do stealth-kills, parries (though I never really had it down to an instinctual level either), or use it to take down the enemies that picked up Ashely without accidentally killing her. The durability was a nuisance, but it really stopped being a problem once you got it upgraded. I almost never had it break in the castle especially after I got it fully upgraded. I do agree that Luis and Ashley were greatly improved. Both felt like they contributed much more to the story and were much more well-rounded. Smoothing out a few of Ashley's more annoying moments like her panic attack causing her to run away from Leon made much more sense and fit with the overall terror of what she is going through. The time you take control of her is also much better and honestly feels more terrifying. The Las plagas was also much better integrated into the story and the journal entries from the villagers and miners as they slowly lost control of themselves did a much better job of conveying how terrifying they were. I actually felt really bad at one point knowing that I was killing a bunch of innocent people even if it was a mercy kill at that point which was something I never really felt in the original. I also agree that the stuff they cut out was a good idea. Even with the cut stuff, I was running out of fumes on the island and actually just one-shot the final boss with a rocket launcher because I was just done by that point. On the downside, I do have to disagree with you on Salazar and Saddler. The radio conversations between them and Leon was great to me and really helped flesh them out. Salazar acting arrogant and superior, but slowly loosing his cool as time goes on was great to watch and I loved Leon's witty one-liners that pissed Salazar off. Saddler becoming more actually like a crazy cultist that truly believed that the las plagas was some holy being was an interesting change, but his lack of actual appearances or encounters with Leon and Ashley before the very end of the game kind of diminished him to me. Yeah there was some nice foreshadowing and you saw him using the las plagas in Leon and Ashley, but he still felt almost tacked on rather than an integral part of the game like he was in the original. I also was not happy with the new shooting range that the merchant set up. The game itself was well-done and better than the original, but the reward being some tokens that you exchanged for random prizes was beyond annoying. It got worse once I realized that you could get duplicate prizes meaning that all the hard work I spent on getting high scores at the shooting range just went to waste. I do agree with you that I did not like losing the laser-sight. The biggest reason I stuck with the original pistol was because I liked using the laser sight for it. I had also already spent the spinel's on getting the laser sight not realizing that other pistols couldn't use it so it felt like it would have been a huge waste of spinels not to stick with the starter pistol. The starter pistol having the high-critical exclusive boost meant it wasn't a huge loss, but I really wanted to use the red9 as it was my favorite gun from the original. The last thing I did not really like was the regenerators. I don't know why, but they actually felt less-scary in the remake despite being more dangerous. Them being able to move quickly felt like it kind of actually cut some of the tension as opposed to them moving slowly, but surely towards you. The sound they make wasn't as intimidating either. Sorry I wasn't expecting this to become such a long comment. To summarize, I did have really good time with this game and Like a lot of its changes. I am absolutely planning to play it again sometime in the near-future, but overall, I think that Dead Space remake was a slightly better remake than this remake was.
The merchant request format and the semi open world design of all three areas is something I hope the eventual RE5 Remake does as well. It's why my first playthrough took 19 hours on Standard. I searched all three of the maps for as many things as I could find. I'm an RE5 OG fan and I know that game didn't have a Merchant or Duke, but it'd be cool to introduce one. But I'm in the same boat about less rat hunting and more requests like The Wandering Dead.
33:11 In response to how staggering works in remake, the SG-09 attached with the laser sight mostly negates this issue, since all your shots are considered "focused in" with a higher crit chance, and the exclusive upgrade giving a 5x crit chance COMPLETELY negates this issue. I'd have to argue with you saying that the red9 in the best gun in the game. In the original, sure, but in remake the quick draw on-the-move ability of the SG's laser sight combined with the crazy crit upgrade makes this gun crazy busted if you can land your shots. Players coming from the OG game that swear by the red9, I heavily recommend you try out the SG this go around. I'd suggest it be the first thing you use your upgrade ticket on. Definitely the sleeper hit in this version.
Honestly, I do and I don't miss the laser sight. In the original it made just about every gun pin point accurate and fairly similar, but in the remake the guns all feel unique and different. I think having the laser sight for only a few weapons really makes the game feel a bit more realistic and more serious, I also really like that its a choice if you want it or not.
I appreciate you pointing out the more claustophobic environments. I actually prefer the original re4 for this reason alone, and I'm not even a huge re4 fan. If anything, this remake has gave me a bigger appreciation for the original, been playing it a lot since. More detailed claustrophobic environments seems to be a trend for the last 5-10 years. Especially in fps games. Playing newer Doom wads and TCs it's very noticable. Detail is great, but not at the expense of satisfying gameplay.
Capcom didn't rehire Jolene Andersen as Ada because she joined a union. Lily Gao, the new actress, openly stated that she finds seductive Asian woman trope to be racist and stands by her modern portrayal of Ada. A shame, because it was important to get Ada and Leon scenes right, since they are the only bits of storytelling in RE4 that are important to the overall story. Since Leon and Ada have 0 chemistry in RE4R, it's like RE2R never happened and their moment together in RE6 is now impossible to achieve without serious rewrites.
Ada being seductive is not racist Im Asian and I dont find that racist Ada is a spy and she uses what they call female fatal she charm's her way because she knows leon has feeling for her ever since racoon city. she will do every thing to make sure the mission is completed. now she's just there. I don't know some of her other acting work but I hope she gets better for the dlc. wanna know what's racist watch the phines and ferb episode where they went to tokyo that is the most offensive racist depiction ever.
I disagree with Leon dealing with his trauma in this game. It only gets mentioned at the beginning of the game and is never brought up again. This was the problem with RE3R and this game didn't learn from that mistake.
i disagree so much with what you commented. You need to pay attention to leons face in the cutscenes and his actions. The whole game he had a chip on his shoulder because he felt he couldnt save people due to the events of re2. Its why he didnt care if he died while trying to save ashley, because he just wanted to save atleast one person
I feel like most of the engine issues could be explained by the fact the game was still being designed with the ps4 in mind And also I think the laser reticule and headshot and kneeshot changes were purely for game feel or balance, staggers being random actually keeps the players more engaged since you have to pay attention and react quickly to staggers, instead of knowing they are coming, that also adds some decision making to them because in the og you would always go for them since they were so strong, but by being random you have to evaluate if you have enough distance from other enemies where you could afford a 3rd hit stagger instead of a 1 hit one. I havent played 4 in so long I couldnt tell if it was a change for the better but playing RE4R I had no issue with it personally. Loved the video as always.
Agreed on both points. Not being able to rely on a stagger keeps the gameplay more tense and forces you to maintain a dynamic approach to combat. A guaranteed stagger from a limb/head shot opens the door for some serious cheese when you have access to the kind of precision aiming a mouse provides. Playing RE5 recently with a friend made me realize how trivial combat can feel when you can easily set up the stagger to melee cycle. It felt so...automated and , especially because of those i-frames, I never felt much tension or sense of danger.
@@SittingBass it's worth noting that the original game was designed solely for gamecube controller aiming in mind, I don't think it's fair to judge it by modern standards using the pc port with mouse aim or HD project tweaks. I recently went back and played a professional playthrough on console and it was not nearly as exploitable as I had gotten used to on PC.
Re4 remake, not for me. too slow the village people dont have that "something's wrong with me look" .the charm isn't there . The dude parried a CHAINSAW with a Knife? How dumb is that.? The force from the moving Jagged chain would rip it out of Leons hand plus destroy it. It added and took away too much for me. RE4 original trumps the remake. This would have been a great CODE VERONICA remake. I probably would have it in my favorites library
Man, maybe it's just me but I just...DON'T GET why you (or anyone really) would want Resident Evil 4 of all things to be more serious and grounded....It's a ridiculous and ridiculousLY fun plot that wants to have fun with both itself and the player. To have the same plot but all dark and serious and moody loses some of the appeal, I'd say. Like, yeah, everything is grounded and taken seriously. And Now Saddler is completely forgettable and nowhere near as fun as the original version...
My first time through RE4R took me over 20 hours. I was going through slow and taking my time to enjoy the surroundings and also making comparisons with the old games and see what was the same and what was different. It had been out for almost a full year before I got it, because I didn’t get an Xbox series X or S until last Christmas (2023).
The laser actually works on the Sentinel Nine DLC handgun as well. I do agree it is super weird how it doesn't work on like the Blacktail. Also wasn't a huge fan of how using iron sights on certain guns forced you into first person.
I didn't play the original until 2021 so I don't have the nostalgia blinders on. RE4 '05 is a great but flawed game, and RE4R is a great game. The pacing, exploration, and compat are massively improved over the original. The only problem I have is how bosses always transform off screen but that's just a minor nitpick.
Re4R was a lateral move, in my opinion. What wasn't exactly the same was either as good, or a fraction better/ worse. I have no complaints aside from Ada and Saddler's dramatic downgrade in their voice acting, the current year script tweaks, and slightly sluggish movement.
30:00, to your point about playthrough time, my first was clocking around 30 hours, because I often stopped to smell the roses 🤤, but now I'm being to run through the game much more quickly to get those higher ranks.
This is a sureeeal review! Went not like I thought it'd be. You weren't kidding when u said such. Not covering the story beats lent it to launching straight into the comparison and technical aspects. The only YT channel where it's an hour long and wanted an hour more 💚
Another great video as always. My only criticism is with you liking the Red9. I do not know why so many people like that gun and I will die on the hill of the Blacktail being the best handgun in both the OG as well as RE4 remake. Can't wait for your next video, here's hoping you get to covering Fear 3 sooner rather than later.
The Blacktail is also my baby. I love it. I guess most people like the red 9 for its old fashioned design plus it has the highest damage output. Personally I don’t like it’s design and prefer the feel over the Blacktail which still packs a punch.
Having a guaranteed stun with a headshot would cheese the combat. It's why the combat gets stale in the OG. I'm glad they made it non-guaranteed, otherwise the game would be a piece of cake like the OG.
33:10 I actually disagree with the opinion that the reticle was changed out of laziness. They already had the laser sight in game for a couple of guns, meaning it was implemented without issue. Adding it to the other guns would likely have taken very little time at all. They probably just preferred the new reticle for most of their guns tbh. But I do think it was a mistake to not add the option to use the laser sight on other weapons.
I feel your position going into this remake is kind of similar to my thing with the RE2 REmake. I went in without necessarily being particularly attached to the original so the areas of missing content didn't phase me to the same extent as others. I also had a similar experience here. I honestly didn't notice how missing content there was without it being pointed out to me aside from the Gandola lift section in the Village and the U-3 boss.
Facts I totally forgot they didn’t add that dump truck ride in the island or the statue chase, mostly cause they still had his statue at some point in the remake, I think it was in the clock tower
Now that you mention it, isn’t the gondola actually present in the environment by the house you fight with Luis in? Wonder if they originally planned to keep it and ended up cutting it.
@@martyfromnebraska1045 I think they simply chose to cut it for pacing. It only really served to pad out the Village a little bit more before the the Mendez boss.
4:41 yeah.. I respectfully disagree Bio-Terrorism Because Tera doesn't have to end in - orist.. 😂 Mutations, parasites , Viruses, etc .. all hell breaking loose in residential populated areas , have always been the main theme of RE titles.. No? What makes it so compelling are the villains who prey on the weak.. Whether it's the citizens of Raccoon or peaceful Villagers .. it's the innocent that pay the price.. RE 4 is no different.. It's alot of Evil shit going on in this Residency in rural Spain.. No? Don't see how the premise is that far fetched.. When the Nemesis T Type is indeed the by product of a "parasitic infection".. The Alpha Ne parasite gives the Nemesis increased intelligence , speed , strength , problem solving skills , hunting capabilities, and the ability to use weapons.. Just my 2 cents.. Yeah RE 4 is different for sure ,but ain't that different.. It's still following the same formula in a sense.. If you just really think about it. 🤔 Hell in the O.G. RE 4 Leon still uses tank controls.. The more things change, the more they stay the same..
I just find it awesome and crazy that this year we got 2 of the best horror games in years... and they're both remakes. Between this year and 2005, my favorite horror games were dead space 2 and RE2make
What bothers me is that they didn't keep it consistent. They HAD to include the bingo line, for example. Or the fans would've eaten them alive. But the tone REALLY clashes and the delivery is really dull.
The cheese and jokes are still there. Leon still has quips for days, the characters such as Luis and Salazar are still very flamboyant. I guess the biggest loss is probably with Saddler. Just because it’s toned down doesn’t mean it’s absent. Just fits in better with the more grounded and complex take of the story. It’s honestly a miracle that it works so well at least imo. And on a similar subject, the absurdity has also been toned down again not entirely gone. A statue no longer chases you but now it’s a giant flame thrower. Leon doesn’t throw a knife at Salazar but now he just straight up shoots the little gremlin which had me rolling 😂. Stop acting like this remakes murders what the oh was. It doesn’t. That’s a dishonest take
@@thatoneguy1232 Nah, it just doesn't work. The bingo line feels really forced. There's a lot of tonal backlash when they try to make it like the original. Leon jumping backwards in a wall when he was attacked from behind that wall looks ridiculous in this game since it's the only time that happens.
@@RexVergstrong how does it feel forced? It’s not even delivered in the same way. Instead of being said as a joke for…no one I guess, it’s just confusion in the form of a quip. What do you mean “jumping backwards in a wall”? The chainsaw sisters fight? Because he does stuff like that all the time. Is primary method of evading are backflips 😂. Nothing really feels out of place and everything Leon does and says as well as the way they’re done and said feels natural and within what he’d do or say in a given situation.
When it comes to the low resolution textures, there seems to be an issue in the game regarding pop in as others have pointed out. Moreover, it seems that depending on the gpu that someone has, if they run out of vram (and this game is very hungry for it) the game will downscale some textures to make sure it will run. This game certainly has a vram issue because when the ray tracing is enabled on a gpu with 8 gigs of ram or less on ultra settings it will simply crash if you go over the limit. Certainly something they need to fix, but it seems less lazy than how you portrayed this issue. Also for me personally, I really enjoy the presentation and it is more important for the game to look great and perform well than to look AMAZING and have terrible stutters and frame drops.
One thing I didn't like in this remake is the grabs. It adds to the tension at times which is cool but it totally ruins the flow when you get one going. Would be cool if they added an option to break the grabs or something.
I'm still surprised how much I like this remake. I never liked the original game but this remake fixed almost every issue i had with the original, aside from no zombies.
I watched the HP Lovecraft movie Dagon recently, and this game was heavily influenced by that movie. lol The setting , saddler, and the merchant are all there.
Gonna be the odd man out here and say I don't think Re4make was that good. They changed too much of the tone and aesthetic, the soul so to speak of the original. That combined with some terrible voice acting really shut down any enjoyment of the game for me. To be fair I wasn't a huge fan of Re4 on its original release. I was a fan since re1 and re4 was too different with its qtes not zombies reliance on action and the fact it just shut down a plot that had been building from re1 to recv. 4 wasn't the game for me and as time progressed I liked it less and less due to its effects on the series with re5 and 6. But I can still understand it's fans and I feel bad that the remake isn't as faithful to the original. I'm also still butthurt that they remade RE4 a game that frankly didn't need it, and spent all their resources on it. Then put the damn D team on doing RE3 one of the most beloved in the series and it shows. Arguably my favorite RE games remake got shafted so RE4make could take priority.
Its so annoying that resi 3 had a second chance of being remade only to be shafted with cut content and making nemesis limited in use. And no clocktower. They really f'd up with that one.
I agree. Heck, RE4 2005 was the 1st one I bought at launch. But, I'd rather have gotten a great RE3 Remake instead of one for RE4. Capcom did it just for the money, not out of some passionate desire to update a game that truly deserved it. Code Veronica needed this kind of treatment. And I'd like to see Dino Crisis done in this engine too. Sick of zombies lol.
From someone who has played the original like a million times, I thoroughly enjoyed the remake. I can't say I really missed any of the content that was cut, although I did see some theories that some of the cut content would be present in a future Separate Ways campaign. I liked that the voice acting was a more serious tone while still keeping most of the cheesy one liners from Leon.
idk why your complaining RE4 og is cheesy when... this entire series is.... Like I don't think you've been paying attention to some of the laughable writing of the og games from 1 all the way to current day with 8. It's part of the series identity of being cheesy.
Pretty sure he's said his favorite/the best game in the series is Code Veronica. That one is the pinnacle of cheese in the series. Don't worry, this guy doesn't know wtf he saying at this point.
Man I'm a massive RE fan! I have played them since 98 I wasn't a big fan of the original RE4 but the Remake of 4 is absolutely one of my favorite games ever made! They made it perfect!
@@AvalancheReviews Oh hell yeah bro I totally agree with you and you have a sub in me for sure. I agreed 110% with all your opinions on this video. It's nice to see Capcom can keep the original RE elements alive in these remakes for fans like us.
I'm happy that RE2 and RE4 remake were really good. I'm sad that RE3 remake was bad in comparison. Cause we will more than likely never get a second remake to fix the problems with the first. And that makes me sad.
I'll take the kiss and the hug thank you very much. I have been waiting on this SO much. Can't wait to devour this video. Edit: you can turn the button smashing to button holding for the escapes in the options menu. And man, I agree with you on everything on this, and as a hardcore RE4 fan, I felt that most of the changes were very fitting, and I have the same feeling, auditorily and visually I prefer the original, but the story was improved massively. I really dislike how most of the enemies have become tanks though, that straight up sucks.
In the original, you dont need to sit through a cutscene just to do a QTE. If you skip when the cutscene starts, it'll go straight to the QTE, and then it will play the rest of the cutscene
I’ve always thought RE4 was overrated and never understood how people called it the best resident evil game. For me it sat at the bottom with 5 and 6 in my ranking. But after this remake fixing pretty much everything I hated about the original I love this game. It’s not #1 for me but it jumped up a lot of spots. It made the tone much more consistent with the other entries, made the characters far more interesting, made the locations much better. I can’t think of one thing I liked more in the original besides Ada’s voice acting. They absolutely must continue the remake train and fix 5 and 6 to make the whole series one consistent tone. Idk how they’re gonna fix 6 but they gotta try.
Those people who asked why you care about the low res textures are probably the same ones who won't play the classic games because "the graphics are bad".
Fun Fact, the voice actress of Ada was the same person who played her in the after credits of “Welcome to Raccoon City”, so that may explain some things lol
In terms of the low rez textures, it could also be that this is a game that is still developed with the last generation of consoles, whereas Deadspace remake wasn't. Games have to be developed for the lowest common denominator. In this case it's the ps4 and xbox one. This seems more likely than just laziness.
I miss the gun lasers too, but i disagree with you attributing it to the devs being lazy. That’s pretty sloppy on your part, ngl. They have the crosshair focus while you’re standing still to emulate the “stop and go” shooting from the original. I thought that was clear from RE2R forward, but I guess not everybody got it. As far as reusing RE engine assets goes, yes they are trying to make all games in the series post-re7 cohesive, that’s why they’ve used the same title font for all their new releases. It’s a deliberate artistic choice, one you may not agree with, but that’s why they did it. And yes, it is survival horror, no matter what you think. ;)
I have to disagree with the laziness on the laser sight. They implemented it on some, it would have been easy to do for the rest, it had to be for balancing purposes
Great review! On the topic of the low rez textures, I think the texture variety is to blame. Even with the recycled assets, they likely have high resolution versions as a source. When it comes to texture budgets, both texture resolution and variety eat up memory. The more you lean on both, the more memory it consumes and this game already has a high memory requirements, so I wouldn't be surprised if the variety of textures is the main cause for the random low rez textures we run into.
That's an insightful take and would help explain a lot. The only remaining issue is which assets are being prioritized for displaying low res textures. Smaller textures that are easier to miss at a glance (which there are many) should be a lower priority, and therefore be substituted with lower res textures during critical performance checks. While very large and easily visible textures should continue to load as intended. In my experience, entire walls and buildings look very low res at times (thankfully rare) in this remake, while tiny objects look very detailed when viewed up close. I'm sure that player distance from the asset being displayed plays a large role in this; that logic is not wrong. But something huge like a wall or building at a medium distance is definitely something that will distract the player if it's low res and visible to the player's camera.
@@XadePsyconic Yeah I totally agree and also noticed some glaringly obvious objects looks rather low rez. My best guess is these object gave the best returns in terms of managing the memory budget. A larger object that's lower in resolution will save more memory than a small object. Just my best guess though.

Old one is pointless now
I used to have this opinion until I played the re4remake. Though I do agree with you on re2remake and especialy re3remake

Luis had nothing to do with the T-Virus outbreak, he was on the team that made Nemesis, so he actually had nothing to do with with what Leon faced.
Hello my twin
Remake sounds normal to a regular tv

The 2023 "remake" is for "modern audiences" who like cringe Marvel jokes. It's not funny.
27:53 yes, ammo drop way less because:
1.- Now you can recover bolts to use with the crossbow.

Wait... is the fumble at 17:05 a bit? If not, it def works as one.
I’m glad someone else caught it too lol I think it may have accidentally made it past editing
Glad someone else noticed it, I thought I was going crazy there for a sec.
There is simple way to get around the issue with voice acting. Just play with JP voices, works perfectly for me.
I think most would rather deal with it and not go the weeb route
@@yikes6969I think that for the most part the voice actors are just fine. It’s a super nitpick in my opinion.
Re1R cut all the iconic lines from the OG game… even 4R had the master of unlocking line, but not 1R.
I love the “Hey, that was my lance!” Line. I don’t doubt for a second that Luis genuinely used that lance against the Ganados.
They gimped ma boy!
Please Capcom. Just let me stick the laser on the Mauser!
The Red9cels are the most annoying part of this fanbase smh
Where my Selling jewels without being on anything boys at
Something to add to your section on Luis
his involvement with umbrella was with the European branch and as his photo shows he was a member of the nemesis team
Also why he is so knowledgeable about parasites besides his phds/degrees.
Nah OG re 4 holds your hand like a toddler.
@@jackjax7921yes, the one that people complain is aged and has tank control holds our hands 😂
I got the deluxe edition with the OG soundtrack and I turn it on and off between playthroughs and its probably half the reason ive beaten it like 6 times now
On my 3rd Professional Run right now and absolutely loving the game still
Whilst I don't ever approve of harassment, do keep try to abstain from painting her as some hard done by victim.
Hoping in the inevitable Separate Ways DLC they include the U3 boss fight after hearing fans wanting it
I hate to say it but "It" was scarier in the original.
Thank you Jared! I’m glad the day is finally here and it’ll be nice to have a new video to have on repeat, you the man!
@@themeangene holy shit dude you replied to fifty different people calling her racist. Go outside, you’re giving off absolute incel vibes
That's a verbose way to convey your thoughts..
@@mrpussinboots4252 I am aware. I just started writing and then kept going.
Honestly I never tired fully upgrading the SG. I’ll definitely give that a shot!
Honestly, I do and I don't miss the laser sight. In the original it made just about every gun pin point accurate and fairly similar, but in the remake the guns all feel unique and different. I think having the laser sight for only a few weapons really makes the game feel a bit more realistic and more serious, I also really like that its a choice if you want it or not.
if you think the guns were even a little similar in the original you’re completely wrong
I personally find the remake to be more satisfying gameplay wise in every conceivable regard, the original is far too easy
How is it racist? Women being seductive can happen in any race
The boat scene in Re 4 remake. has more tension than any Ada Leom interaction.
Ada being seductive is not racist Im Asian and I dont find that racist Ada is a spy and she uses what they call female fatal
she charm's her way because she knows leon has feeling for her ever since racoon city.
she will do every thing to make sure the mission is completed.
now she's just there.
I don't know some of her other acting work but I hope she gets better for the dlc.
wanna know what's racist watch the phines and ferb episode where they went to tokyo that is the most offensive racist depiction ever.
Perfect timing. I just finished my first playthrough right now at a whopping 29h on hardcore!
44:02 What the hell am I even looking at here? The textures look fine to me. Dirty rags on a dirty floor, what more do you want?
I feel like most of the engine issues could be explained by the fact the game was still being designed with the ps4 in mind
And also I think the laser reticule and headshot and kneeshot changes were purely for game feel or balance, staggers being random actually keeps the players more engaged since you have to pay attention and react quickly to staggers, instead of knowing they are coming, that also adds some decision making to them because in the og you would always go for them since they were so strong, but by being random you have to evaluate if you have enough distance from other enemies where you could afford a 3rd hit stagger instead of a 1 hit one.
Always a great day when a new RE Retrospective video is added
How are we not talking about you pulling an oblivion voice actor move at 17:10 lol
30:00, to your point about playthrough time, my first was clocking around 30 hours, because I often stopped to smell the roses 🤤, but now I'm being to run through the game much more quickly to get those higher ranks.
Editing mistake you repeated yourself 17:04 to 17:22.
And yeah ada's VA sounded very flat.
This is a sureeeal review! Went not like I thought it'd be. You weren't kidding when u said such. Not covering the story beats lent it to launching straight into the comparison and technical aspects. The only YT channel where it's an hour long and wanted an hour more 💚
They better give me my code Veronica remake next after all Capcom cancelled the fan remake.
I like the starting pistol
The Blacktail is also my baby. I love it. I guess most people like the red 9 for its old fashioned design plus it has the highest damage output. Personally I don’t like it’s design and prefer the feel over the Blacktail which still packs a punch.
On my second playthrough, I dressed with the jacket on and the aviator cap with the Red 9 and roleplayed a Canadian Leon
Having a guaranteed stun with a headshot would cheese the combat. It's why the combat gets stale in the OG. I'm glad they made it non-guaranteed, otherwise the game would be a piece of cake like the OG.
I strongly disagree the pacing in the original re4 was fine and so was the game length
Will you be doing a video on the separate ways DLC?
Game is a masterpiece along with the original
When I first played re4 on ps2 I didn’t enjoy it too much being a fan of the originals and the style of those.
But I absolutely loved this remake

Yo congrats 🎉
@@vladsacosa3548thank you!
@@FALLENSK8ER1995 And honestly, it doesn't help that the removal of these sections did wonders for the pacing.
@@Nerom99 forreal man, as cool as it would’ve been to see U3 again I get why they got rid of that encounter, it feels like filler

Because Tera doesn't have to end in - orist.. 😂
Mutations, parasites , Viruses, etc .. all hell breaking loose in residential populated areas , have always been the main theme of RE titles..
Between this year and 2005, my favorite horror games were dead space 2 and RE2make
Yeah attacking the ada actress off social media was really heartless and rude
Taking out all the cheese/B-Movie vibes made the Remake just worse for it. The tone was just so much more fun in the original.
Nothing really feels out of place and everything Leon does and says as well as the way they’re done and said feels natural and within what he’d do or say in a given situation.

Re2R Ada wasn't rehired because Capcom doesn't hire union actors, so it's on Capcom nobody else
And I think my whole time playing a grab led to a total of maybe 2 or 3 hits by another enemy. So the tension wore quick and became an annoyance.
You can actually duck to avoid the grabs entirely if you time it!
I want a Dino Crisis remake or A Parasite Eve remake
Man I'm a massive RE fan! I have played them since 98 I wasn't a big fan of the original RE4 but the Remake of 4 is absolutely one of my favorite games ever made! They made it perfect!
I loved it. It gets even more fun on new game plus. When you don’t have to worry as much about the knife’s durability, things get so damn fun.
Re 3 OG is the same. Its not an important game compared to Re 1, 2, and 4
I'll take the kiss and the hug thank you very much.
A fully upgraded shotgun one shot most enemies.
Auditory and Visual is 100x better in the remake.
In the original, you dont need to sit through a cutscene just to do a QTE. If you skip when the cutscene starts, it'll go straight to the QTE, and then it will play the rest of the cutscene
Great video as always! I didn't know you were never so hot on the original it was interesting to hear your views on it.
Don't forget that re4 is a cross-gen title while dead space remake is a new-gen only, so it having low res items might be because of that.
9/10 game, would be a 10 if the voice acting (besides Leon and Ashley) was better and if Leon was more responsive. Leon has lead shoes
Agreed. I had a bigger problem with the script than the VAs, but I do wish Ada and Saddler in particular were voiced differently.
Ah yes voice acting is better than gameplay.
Surprised this one came out so soon, really excited to hear your thoughts about this!
And yes, it is survival horror, no matter what you think. ;)
Good take. Avalanche takes are awful tbh. But you're based.
@@misterhimura036 thank you random commenter!
