I hope you guys get a kick out of this one because it was a ton of "fun" to work on. If you're wondering why I sound odd towards the end, I had to get one tooth pulled and a root canal on a different tooth from the same side. So I had a hole in my gums and a temporary crown on one of my teeth. Couldn't quite get my mouth to do what I wanted. I'll sound normal next video. I promise. Also, I did some testing and it looks like my guess was correct. Those vertical bars in GameCube video output do seem to come from a low pass filter blurring the dithering. So if you own a Tink 5X, just turn your LPF off. Problem solved!

You forgot to mention that the GameCube version is the only one that has different damage values to weapons, mostly all do less damage IIRC. Broken B. maxed does 35 damage and 50 on every other release.

Few games compete with RE4 in terms of replayability. I finished it dozens of times and yet I'm still not bored of it. What's funny is that in most of these times I wasn't even planning on finishing it, I just plan on dipping into it for a few minutes just to scratch an itch and the next thing you know I'm watching the end credits lol the progression of the game is just so well done. Once you pick it up it's so hard to put it down. Every new port that comes out is pretty much just an excuse for me to play through it again.

24:21 The difference in audio sample fidelity has less to do with the capacity of the storage medium and more to do with the amount of audio RAM each platform had available to keep those samples on hand in. The GameCube had a luxurious 16MB of audio cache while the PS2 had to manage with a paltry 2MB.
Note: The GameCube's actual audio ram was an even smaller 8KB, but most games would read in samples as needed from the cache.

everything in the PS2 version is downgraded simply because the hardware isn't as powerful as Gamecube. the extra storage space of the PS2's DVDs doesn't matter when the console can't render the original assets. there were alot more differences than the one's you covered. as an example alot of assets in the environments have been removed and every model has a lower polygon count, plus the lower resolution textures. this is why all the cutscenes were turned in to pre-rendered videos, the PS2 wasn't capable of rending the high quality models used in the cutscenes.

Yes! In addition, audio takes a lot more than just storage. Audio files can affect performance just as much as graphics. Unfortunately, there aren't as many methods of optimization/compression to audio as there are with visual assets like textures and models. To makes matters more unfortunate, audio codecs in 2004-2005 weren't as clean and lightweight as they are today.

Interestingly the hookman build spawned haunting grounds for the ps2, an amazing game with the hookman being a persuer that cant be killed only stunned and it being in a huge castle being the same, re4 even references haunting grounds with the dog you rescue from the bare trap which has the same model as huey the dog from that game :)

    • @LonelySpaceDetective
      @LonelySpaceDetective Рік тому

It's actually the Castle/Fog build where Haunting Grounds spawned from! The credited "draft" scenario writer for Haunting Grounds (Noboru Sugimura) was writing for RE4 during the Castle build, and when it was scrapped the script he made was donated to Production Studio 1, who later went on to do HG (this is the story told by the Resident Evil wiki on Fandom anyway).
I think the pursuer concept probably originated specifically from Clock Tower 3; Capcom had some experience with the IP through that entry of the series, and I've heard HG described as a spiritual successor to CT3.

speaking of the Ultimate HD release I wish that version used the Wii Remote aiming mechanics for the mouse and keyboard. using the mouse to control the on screen reticle and the ASWD keys to move the camera while aiming would have provided that version of the game with significantly more accurate aiming than what was included.

@@AvalancheReviews Wii remote aiming mechanics are generally on par with mouse aiming so when the Ultimate HD version was announced I was expecting it to pull those mechanics from the Wii version, I was disappointed when it didn't. although I suppose you could play the Wii version in Dolphin with mouse and keyboard to replicate what it would have been like, that might be worth looking into.

    • @Jonen560ti
      @Jonen560ti 3 роки тому

@@JangoTheBlueFox I tried that, but at 30fps, the mouse movement just feels wrong. And I think they're using some kind of interpolation on the reticle that makes it even worse. My personally favorite way to play the game is using the steam version played with a Switch controller using Gyro to simulate mouse movement. I don't even have to sacrifice analog controls since steamInput can be configured to only simulate the mouse when a button is pressed, which I of course set to the aim button. And the game is able to seamlessly blend KBM and Controller inputs so I can mix gyro and joystick input as necessary. So I can use the joystick for wide movements and use Gyro for precise adjustments.

Almost everyone is tragic in their own way and it got my feels really going while still being a pretty bonkers story about bioweapons, terrorist organisations and all that good cheese the RE games are known for. Indie game dev here. So, my speculation for why the audio files are more compressed is likely due to the PS2's cpu and memory buffer being much smaller/limited than the GameCube.
Regardless of storage, all audio files will need to uncompressed at run time, which the PS2 is not great for (this is a CPU task). Decompressing audio files at run time, and running multiple audio files simultaneously will take memory, and cpu calls.
If you notice many PS2 games vs the competition, this is the case, and it's the only conclusion I can draw.

I don't know if this information is accurate or not, but if it is, then the audio compression would make sense to me, assuming this memory is used for loading sound effects on both consoles and not for something completely different

God i couldn't agree more. i love RE4 but i hate what it did to the series (outside of ya'know - keeping it alive ) i remember seeing the trailers for RE4 when it was in its weird 'progenitor virus' infecting Leon stages and being so excited to see that RE4... still one of the lost/beta RE titles id love to see more of one day~

@Emo Gamer R i definately agree with your points- code veronicas opening was pretty crazy, and dont get me wrong- i dont hate 4 at all- i just found the trailers for the re4 betas so interesting- and was a bit bummed out they just sorta poofed into the aether :(
But upon 4s release i played through that gane about 30 times consecutively, i was absolutely hooked- it inly dawned on me later that the earlier trailers told a diffrent story... sorta like the early trailers of revelations :o
Though i will admit, i shamelessly love resident evil zero xD i love the fixed cameras, its pre rendered backgrounds- basically everything that ISNT the hookshot... because ya'know- nobody loves the goddamn hookshot xD

You talking about how weird the controls were on PS4 sent me for a whirl. My first playthrough was the Steam version of the game, and the default controls were so alien to me that even that modified one felt unnatural. I eventually got used to it, but I can’t imagine myself playing the game with the “classic” controls - especially now that I’ve played RE5, which basically uses that control scheme by default.

About the dynamic difficulty critique, RE7 solved that problem perfectly, for example, madhouse difficulty only alternates between level 8 and 9(max), nothing below that, normal in between level 3 to 6(if I remember that correctly), the greater the level, the more it reduces damage dealt and increases damage taken(HP from enemies and Ethan stays the same, the damage alternates by percentages, 0.25x in level 9, 1x in level 4 or 5, 2x in level 1 or 2, just a few examples cuz I don't remember the exact values)

Ps2 sales were super boosted by the fact that a cheap DVD player was over 300 dollars. By combining them Sony made the ps2 a no brainer. The reason the audio is compressed and cutscenes are prerendered is because of performance issues, not storage. Think of it as having a lot of high-quality assets stored at once on less ram and processing them with a weaker CPU, perhaps the specs aren't so different but it being a port could make it hard to find an optimized way to replicate a feature. For cutscenes similarly, perhaps they couldn't replicate all the visual effects of the gamecube/they'd lag cutscenes with the higher quality models and more complex light effects, etc.
And about the RE4 HD Project, the seams you saw are most likely gone by the next release of the mod (Hopefully by December) since they learned and polished more than what they did already. The mod also fixes quite a bit of glitches, inconsistencies, errors, etc on many places so it's not only a texture upgrade. Furthermore it's worth noting that it aims to be accurate to the Gamecube not the PC ultimate edition itself so colors match the cooler colors of the GC rather than the warmer colors of the ports, and the real pictures they used are either taken from the original texture libraries they used during development on the official game or photos they took in real life from the real places they got the textures from so if anything it is one of the most accurate HD mods ever give or take areas that lacked any details that needed more than just better textures.

    i love the ps2 version :)
Playing it once in a while.
it has in my op the best gameplay (the ps2 controller is better than the gc controller), the game is harder on the ps2 than on the gamecube which is a plus for me, i like the challenge.
Leons flashlight is on in the scary village part and looks more atmospheric.
The audio is muddy yes, but at least it is not buggy as the later ports (all of them..a lot)...
one example, the sniper rifel reloading sound doesnt match the visuals in the later ports.
And as i say ther are so many audio bugs or visual bugs(reloading the assault shotgun, the bullets clip through the rifle) (weird 60fps and 30 fps visual effect mix looks awful)...
I also think...the higher the resolution gets the worse the game look...takes away the atmosphere in my op, its a horror/action game. (same what happend to the silent hill hd version)
there are more things why i prefer the ps2 version over all others, but im to lazy to write :D

If you failed them, you did less damage with your additions, so it wasn't like you fail and die and have to repeat the section over again.

My first time playing RE4 was the original PC port and it was just a few years ago. It was the only version my PC could handle well enough.
I'm sure if I go back to it not after playing better versions I'd realize the downgrades but at the time I didn't feel like I was playing a worse version of something. Bc it still is the full game.
Even though I did notice the cutscenes were video files and lower resolution than the game and the onscreen QTE controller prompts were generic button icons that made me fail more often than anything else.
I also got lucky that some beautiful mad lad uploaded a version to the high seas (I did own the Ultimate HD version legit btw) that was already as modded with fixes as available at the the time.
But nothing in that run through ruined the experience for me or made me think I needed to get a PS4 and play the game there. That's how good of a game it is, even a compromised version made a fan.

It probably has been said in other comments... the original re4 pc port, the one from 2007, has an official patch that restores everything the ps2 version had, which means shaders, fog and everything else. There's still no reason to play that version today tho.
Also, one thing that I found interesting but i'm not entirely sure of, is that every version of re4 released after the first one (gc) has some graphic effects turned off.
It was the case even for the steam HD version, until somebody found some script of those effects turned off and showed them to the public. After a while, a new version came out with everything turned on. If I remember correctly (I read those threads on the steam forums back in the day), it was the first porting with every graphic effects turned on. I'm not even sure if the wii version had all of them.
But, as I said, I may be wrong. Some years has passed after all :P
