My ONLY problem with this game is the scenario division. I feel it worked way better in the original. No repeat bosses, no contradictory story moments (friggin Annette dies twice or something?), first scenario decisions that resonate on the second one, among other things. I think this game is excellent and a very good sign of things to come in the franchise, but it comes so close to being perfect by such silly details that I can't help but feel just a little disappointed.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 років тому +90

Yeah, I can agree with that. It disappointed me too.

    • @Gruntvc
      @Gruntvc 5 років тому +43

Repeat puzzles and bosses. And Birkin is shot dead, even confirmed dead by a professional USS soldier lol.
Plus it is very easy to expose the strings behind the game. Like Mr. X giving up or being blocked access to a safe area. Zombies do it too.
Characters cuss way too much. Nothing wrong with a good well placed f bomb, but here it is over done and just feels edgy.
I think Capcom did an excellent job with the graphics, sound effects/design, and most oif the gameplay.
But then utterly dropped the ball and cut corners with: the story, making sure each scenario was unique but still connected, and the lack of great music.
RE2 has some of my favorite tracks from the franchise. Very scummy to get some more music it cost extra.
But hey, at least they didn't sell us separately Hunk, Tofus, and the infinite ammo weapons as baloney dlc.
Capcom just loves to one moment be awesome and than be terrible the next. I'll take that over always terrible like most Western entertainment has become lately.

What surprised me the most was how utterly terrifying and refreshing it was to see ZOMBIES again. After the 2000's and beyond oversaturated the market and RE abandoned them, it was amazing to see classic zombies and in such numbers. The fear this classic rendition of the walking dead instilled was new and nostalgic all at the same time. Brilliant.

It definitely still takes place on September 29th and 30th, 1998. You can see the date on the helmet-cam footage of the Umbrella team attacking Birkin as just 15 minutes before midnight on September 22nd, 1998. There are other references, but my favorite is the true ending: “next up on this boring Wednesday is a song to get your blood pumping...”. September 30th, 1998 was, indeed, a Wednesday.

I loved that I practically didn’t need the map to get around the police station by the end of it because it was all second nature. @@mielipuolisiili7240 You're missing out then. Fans miss the point of what the B scenario in RE 2 Remake is. Think of RE 2 Remakes B scenario like you would with the RE director cut's alternate scenario where it changes up item placement, enemy placement, etc. That's basically what it is, an alternate scenario for players that want more Resident Evil, and a greater challenge. I never understood why anyone would think it hurts the game at all to have extra content. The B scenario (it shouldn't be called that) is not meant to be from the other characters perspective like in the original RE 2. The reason why it has the same exact story beats is because Capcom was never going to include a B scenario to begin with. The game was pretty much finished, but the fans wanted a B scenario, so Capcom chose to add an extra scenario (again, it shouldn't be called a B scenario) as an alternate scenario with more dynamic enemy placement, less ammo, and an extra boss since they could not go back and create multiple new cutscenes from another character's perspective. They were however able to add the final G mutant boss, and the final cutscene without much of a problem. Mr X also arrives much sooner in the B scenario. I have played through it many times, and the B scenario is the best challenge the game has to offer.

It balances so many gameplay elements and tactics in such a seamless way that other games miss the mark on. Perfect amount of pacing, storyline to follow, not too many zombies, not too scary where you don't want to explore but tense enough to be on guard, making decisions on inventory or bullets or fighting vs running, it's tough to pull all this off to this level

I think you are intentionally ignoring what many of us were saying Avalanche. You outright used to say survival horror IS tank controls and fixed camera angles. Hell, until a few months ago you, among other purists, were disappointed REmake 2 was ditching fixed angles for an over the shoulder POV.
You also refuse to call RE7 a true RE game due to a change in perspective, even though every component of survival horror you praise here was back on track in that game first more or less.
What everyone was saying is that FCA and tank controls were a product of their time and survival horror can thrive without them. A sentiment I'm sure watching your retrospectives you didn't share. Capcom proved this twice already in two different ways with RE7 and REmake 2.
I'm glad you are enjoying RE2 as much as I do and I hope the series builds on this specific formula for future entries. But I'm also glad RE2 woke many old timers up to the fact survival horror can be more than the limitations of the 90's.

Nostalgias a powerful thing. While I can respect your fondness for fixed camera angles, that's never coming back. It was never an intuitive form of controlling a character and, quite frankly, I don't think that would sell much these days. As both RE7 and this game now proved, horror was never about the camera angles, it was always about atmosphere and gameplay. RE4, 5 and 6's problem was never the OTS camera, it was making their characters too powerful.

Honestly, as a survival horror game, it is magnificent and one of the best experiences i've had in a long time, but does this remake replace the original....no.
The RE 1 remake added new elements, expanded on all the characters, introduced new enemies, more locations and a more fleshed out story thus making the original pretty much obsolete besides nostalgia.
The RE 2 remake is a more condensed & minimalistic compared to the original, for instance, in the original, Birkin's presence was kept in mystery and when he did infect or kill somebody, you would only see his shoulder eye before moving on, giving the feeling of "WTF WAS THAT".......in the remake, he just pops out with a BOO!

Gameplay and graphics are 10/10, but I knock it down to 9/10 because Capcom cut corners and made changes I didn't like.
Zombie Brad being a big one. He's replaced with a lame poster.
Why does that helicopter randomly kamikaze into the RPD?
Why'd they cut the awesome scene of tyrants being air dropped into Raccoon City?
Why does a PS1 game have a crazy story that makes more sense than a 2019 reimagining? This is a spot Capcom really got lazy and cut some corners.
Really wish they would've improved the characters too. I think only Marvin is presented better.

Imo calling original RE2's story masterpiece is quite an overstatement. It's mostly 90's cheese and undoubtedly entertaining, but it's not like it will blow your mind or a crowing achievement in writing. RE2 2019 was improved a lot in that department, with better characterization, more grounded dialogue etc. but still... it's pretty mundane stuff. When I think about top notch storytelling, at least in the horror genre, games like AW, SH2 or A Machine for Pigs come to mind.
I agree about the 2nd runs, I was a bit disappointed they were not designed in a way to be complimentary and better tied to 1st runs' events (like Mr. X still showing in Leon 2nd after a certain event in Claire 1st). Anyway, I can''t blame Capcom since they were upfront about that and stated there will be no zapping system. Indeed, 2nd runs turned out to be like remixed, more challenging campaigns and more content is always welcome.
I think the technical aspects that impressed me the most in this game were the lighting and sound design. Especially the latter is the best I've experienced in a AAA game since Dead Space. Also, binaural audio + headphones = astounding immersion!
I have completed 3 stories so far (and 4th survivor last night, that was INTENSE) and I can wholeheartedly say that REmake 2 is my favorite in the series, alongside REmake and definetely in the top 3 horror games of 10's.

dude how dare you, how double dare you? I'm kidding i don't care like that. But i do believe the original RE story was a beauty, and an achievement, as it was super grounded compared to the games on those times, its main strength was it simplicity, sure the story gets a little on the nose here and there, but when it came out everything had to have a crazy twist. In this one you pretty much knew who the antagonist was, and their motivations for a good chunk of the game, but you were so focused on surviving, because you were just a rookie cop with no experience and a random young girl, in a shitshow. That's the beauty of it, and that's how it was revolutionary in it's time, maybe not as much as the original SH, or even the original RE, but it does have something those don't have, SH it has that "magic" element, and in RE1 you were a powerhouse special service cop your team walking around. Those games you mention came out, at least 3 years later, and in one of the golden eras of survival horror where it was still evolving. Im sorry for writing such a long as comment but in summary, you had to play this in 98 to truly appreciate how revolutionary(for it's time) the story as.

My only complaints with RE2 is that I wish the music was more pronounced, it feels like its ashamed of its soundtrack. Whereas REmake 1 was proud of it and still had great sound design, I feel like REmake 2 could have found a happy middle ground, not just shoving the soundtrack to the back. I also would have liked more variation in the B scenarios, a couple notes, the opening and ending are all that stood out as different which is a let down.

I’ve played the game too much, and I think it’s pretty inconsistent, really depends on your moment to moment gameplay, you can be safe and feel like you got something locked down and then you’re missing every single shot and backing away to line up some more. The game plays you as much as you play it, the sounds, the atmosphere, Avalanche covered it all, there are a lot of elements working to keep you on your toes... I really fucking side tracked here...

      @RenegadeDiggle 5 років тому +4

Apparently that's false. I thought that in the demo but it didn't do anything. Apparently someone datamined the code and found that damage is static. Meaning wherever you shoot it does the same damage, that headshots don't do more damage. Along with that, each zombie has their own number of hp and it's not random. You can notice this when you progress where zombies start having higher health.

  • @camoufrage

Love the video as always. The only thing that I really don't understand is some people, including you, complain about headshots being RNG. The only weapon in the game where that is even relevant is the starting handgun, which I think is meant to be a complete peashooter. By the time you get the shotgun / grenade launcher this is a non-issue. If anything, the game is encouraging you to think outside the box & aim for the limbs or God forbid just avoid shooting things you don't absolutely have to. If the handgun was popping heads the entire balance of the game would be broken. It's likely a design decision that in the end improves the experience and gives the handgun a different role in the mid-late game than it has had in the past. Regardless, you're one of the only people in my mind with an opinion on RE worth listening to.
Editing to reinforce this point by mentioning that every speedrun of this game right now is almost entirely people using the handgun to stun zombies rather than kill. Most don't even utilize the shotgun or GL until the very end of the game (fun fact: they will spawn those weapons in the lab if you didn't pick them up in the RPD). Also people have mentioned in the comments that letting the crosshair shrink increases the chance of permanently downing a zombie. This is true, but once again it is such a miniscule portion of the game compared to every other weapon that are deliberately more reliable in exchange for scarce ammunition. Survival horror is a balancing act, especially so when you have such direct control of where your bullets go. This game did a brilliant job of it, which is secretly why I think old school fans like you and I enjoy it so much.

Great review! I wanted to hear your opinion more than anyone else's, and was happy to see you get this video out so quick! Though, I kinda disagree of some thing. I don't feel this remake is the definitive version of RE2. I think the most obvious area of improvement over the original should have been the 4 scenarios/zapping system; yet, the team didn't even attempt this. Instead we have 4 redundant scenarios that retcon each other and don't feel complete. If they were to go the RE1 route, I think a more concise way would be to only have one campaign for each character, but you have to earn the B ending through some kind of extra task (like saving Barry/Chris to get the real final battle in RE1). Instead, we got the sloppiest implementation of the mechanic.
As far as the story goes, it had great moments (I love the new Leon and Claire), but the overall story isn't as satisfying as the original. It feels empty, and I think that's due to the lack of Leon/Claire interaction. In the original Claire A/Leon B story of the original RE2, we got a far more climatic final act with both main characters working together: Claire gets the cure for Sherry, and Leon gets Sherry out of the lab. There's just more going on, and it makes you feel like the multiple scenarios actually serve a purpose. In the remake, Leon doesn't even know Sherry exists until after he makes it on the train. It's not very satisfying, especially knowing that the story you played isn't even canon and completely contradicts the other character's story (Annette dying twice, fighting all the same forms of Birkin, Mr. X being killed by Birkin, etc.).
Granted, the story may not be a big deal to a lot of people, especially when the gameplay is so tight in this remake, but I feel, at the very least, the four scenarios were handled poorly in this game. It's disappointing to wait so long for a remake only to have Capcom cut out the most unique features in order to save time on production, and the scenarios really do feel like an incomplete feature. Why does this remake even have 4 scenarios? Why is the 21 year old original so much tighter in handling 4 stories? It's baffling to me. But what do you think the way the scenarios were handled here?

As near as we've been able to determine, zombies actually don't have random HP - they have set HP that can vary substantially, but most zombies average around 700-1100 HP (Mr. X has 1500 HP and the first boss has 5000 HP, for comparison.) Player damage varies based on "rank" (the same scaling difficulty system used in RE7 and every game since RE4), but is hard locked to the highest "rank" on Hardcore, for about 67% of normal. At the starting rank of standard, you deal 100% damage, but if you're playing very well it could result in less - probably around 70-80%.
Head popping is based on dealing above a certain threshold in a single hit, not random chance - but base handguns will have difficulty breaking this threshold without the random crits (typically for 3x damage.) This is why magnums and the upgraded shotgun will reliably pop heads, but handguns may not. Different handguns deal different damage, but you can expect the A scenario baseline handguns to do around 100-120 damage, while the B scenario handguns deal a bit more.
It's also important to note that allowing your reticle to fully aim increases your damage output by as much as 50% depending on weapon - if you want to pop heads, zero in first (this is why Claire's B scenario handgun is so amazing at popping heads - it "reaims" after firing almost instantly.) Weapons with laser sights are considered to be always zeroed in, unless otherwise indicated (Leon's magnum still has a brief aiming period even after the laser sight upgrade.)
Zombies in RE2R aren't that big of a deal if you've spent some time "playtesting" to see how they react and interact with different things... let alone fire up Cheat Engine or another memory reader to see actual data. People complaining about zombies not staying down are probably either not used to old-school RE where zombies liked to play dead (in my experience it's pretty rare for a zombie to get back up more than twice in RE2R, and most only get back up once), or haven't been knifing very much - the knife in RE2R is extremely good, basically being the CVX/Krauser knife and not the wimpy REmake knife.
Can't say I agree with the complaints about Mr. X, either. I think there are actually too many rooms he can't enter, which makes it too easy to see how limited his AI actually is and can break immersion. I think he's an extremely important part of the game, made to make the game tense and difficult - because otherwise players would be spending hours running back and forth to permanently kill zombies and lickers without a care in the world. Mr. X adds a very important sense of urgency to the whole thing and punishes players who make mistakes in routing and planning ahead.
I blasted through Claire A on my first run (also on hardcore, like you I expected HC to be a joke like Madhouse was), but I struggled quite a bit with the followup Leon B and had to seek out some help. I'd still regard Leon B as the hardest campaign - the relative weakness of the shotgun without the upgrades compared to the grenade launcher makes his RPD pretty rough when you still don't have a good route in mind, and I'd argue the placement of enemies in his sewers are the hardest of any campaign's.

    • @AvalancheReviews

Yeah, adding difficulty by mechanical obfuscation and limitation not representative of the actual entity or character that you're controlling is always ridiculous to me... But then I'm somebody that gets annoyed when I don't have full mechanical autonomy as I would in real life within reason. Let's just say I've been disappointed in games since about 2008 for the most part lol.. oddly enough, resident evil 6 was a title that didn't disappoint in that respect, and it's the only resident evil game that hasn't so far sadly.. Even if it didn't really hold up in a lot of the other respects.
It's also one of the reasons the first person mod doesn't really work for me here, it just brings home the fact that you can't crouch or lean... Whereas in third person at the very least there's a disconnect, even if it is annoying as well...
At the very least, the presentation has a reminiscence of the things that you're doing or doing the things that you're doing, even if the basic things you should be able to do as well are not options.. unlike resident evil 7 and 8, where there's a severe disconnect between the view model presentation.. as is tradition for a lot of modern games it seems.. I guess we only grow wrists and forearms when the game wants a cutscene moment lol.. making it even worse in first person, as either you're holding the weapon in a way to inspect the serial number.. or trying to see if there's any chips in the folding knife lol..
The first person presentation for the third person in the mod sense actually does alleviate that particular issue by its nature.. But... It's hard to win, as that in it of itself hammers home the fact that You're not actually a human, with basic human capabilities... Even sadder, seven and eight had VR modes... lot of that autonomy comes back, so even then it's like they knew better lol.. and two with the VR mod that's connected to the first person mod... This is well... I really wish some of the VR moders would throw us 2d folk a bone, or someone would hijack their work and translate some of that goodness into just a proper mechanical video game like we used to get back in the mid-2000s, before the PC went away as a development platform Target for good.
The various control methodologies for getting around incredibly limited input peripheral, and game design that centered around that has always been an annoyance, made worse by the 20-year time warp that the dual analog controller standard has ingrained.. and made worse even by the even pulled back attempts at bothering with experimentation or even trying, as a game like resident evil 6 to its credit did.
But I guess mine nostalgia, it's it's in the advancement of that virtual and immersive reality.. which hit a dead stop towards the end of the mid-2000s, going from games like fear, and crisis, and stalker.. into games like fear 2, and crisis 2, and Metro 2033.
If you did what you had to do, with limited resources, that's one thing.. But then when you had more resources.. do better do more lol.. which is.. actually something that resident evil actually did as it progressed to a degree.. Even if it was a little bit behind the times about how it went about that for a while, regarding four and it's incredibly handhold-y limited third person action style, by comparison to the trailblazers of that like splinter cell or manhunt.. The latter being about as mechanically rich as you would want from a survival horror game in the most basics, and the former edging closer to an immersive sim.. which survival horror has always been very much in the same mentality of.
The third dimension actually is a feature.. and being able to see where you're shooting is actually a feature.. you can design a better game around that... Mechanical richness is a feature.. you can design a better game with that.. and by better I mean a closer representation to a simulation of the actual events that you're portraying... Which I guess I thought at one point was the goal of all of these kinds of games, but I guess.. either that's changed or that's wrong based on modern development trends and best practices that have completely pervaded the industry. Oh well.

The sound design around Mr. X was on point. You would get a chill down your spine when running around the RPD and hearing those clunking footsteps above you on the next floor or just around the corner. There were times where I would hear them but find it absolutely impossible to tell where they were coming from and that led to a lot of moments of sheer terror. Sadly I do agree that his AI is very easy to cheese and other than the sound I didn't find him to be as much of a threat as others online led me to believe he would be. I think I got caught by him once through all four of my playthroughs and with the sub-weapons it's very easy to never take damage from him.

The operating system on those police laptops is also like a weird mix of Windows 98 and Windows 3.11, though the computers in Umbrella's laboratory seem to use something that has more aesthetic resemblance to Windows 8/10, to underline how futuristic their tech is.
I had some strong disagreement with your evaluation of RE7 as not being survival horror because of the perspective and all (you might even remember my comment if you saw it at all), but even I will agree that REmake 2 blows it out of the water on all counts. The irony of REmake 2's design is that it weirdly ends up being more straight-up survival horror than the original game, dialing back on Hideki Kamiya's penchant for explosive action and exciting setpieces and balancing that element of RE2 with a lot more tension and quite a bit more explorative gameplay in the second half (which was pretty linear in the original game compared to the way it's structured here--and there's even an optional second foray back into the main RPD building from the sewer just to make things feel even more interconnected). It's breathtaking, really. I can't praise it enough for the design choices made here. Pity about the lack of alternative stories for the A/B campaigns, which I was really hoping to experience again, but between the main game's two campaigns, 4th Survivor, and Tofu mode (now with additional alternate Tofu recolors with alternate loadouts that you can unlock for more flan-tastic fun), I can't really complain much even without factoring in the upcoming Ghost Survivor freebies.
Funny point about calibration, tho'. I played the whole game on default brightness and display settings--the only options I changed had to do with HUD and control elements--and the game looks fine on my monitor. I do play on a 1080p PC monitor though so it might be that some of the problems people have with the game's brightness may come from TV settings or the specific model they have (I know, for example, some TVs dynamically change brightness and contrast based on the image on-screen). I suffered no such issues and was able to see fine enough even in the dimmest non-flashlight rooms in the game.
On the subject of console comparison, this is the first game that's made me legitimately happy to own a PS4 Pro since I bought it. The vanilla PS4's framerate inconsistencies are (as far as I can tell) almost completely eliminated on the Pro, making for an ideal, silky-smooth experience with the only drawback compared to PC being very slight in terms of performance and the... baffling continuation of console games not supporting the ordinary-ass USB mouses and keyboards that can be used with them (come on, guys, you're making these games multiplatform with PC releases anyway, just include the PC controls in the console games the same way you include the gamepad controls in the PC versions!).
Side question: have you seen The Gaming Brit's "Road to the Rocket Launcher" series?

Man, you did a spectacular job describing this game.
I've been having such a hard time getting people to believe that not only does this remake live up to the best of survival horror, it rejuvenates it and almost redefines it.
So many people are working on the assumption that this is a watered down bastardization, but once you experience the game, it delivers genuine survival horror so goddam well it's amazing.
My only complaint from the entire 4 scenario run was that A and B are essentially the same, especially the boss issue.
Anyway, you do superb work on here, thanks for all the great RE content.

Your Retrospective series is great dude! RE 2 was the first video game I ever played. Way back on the PS1 when I was only 6 years old. Me and my father used to play this on the weekends together until one day I tried picking it up after he gave up. I never made it any farther than he did, but I still enjoyed the game. This remake made me super pleased, and proud of Capcom. Resident Evil is my favorite game series with 2 and 3 being my most favorites. I so hope they do the same to RE3 that they did to RE2. Great job with the retrospective series though. Glad people hold this game so close to heart as much as I do.

Fps always crap for re series. The reason is simple: we wanna see our beloved characters in action, wanna guide them to survive the situation , NOT acting as if we're the character themselves aka 1st person perspective.

I love your channel but this game would not have sold well at all if they'd used fixed camera perspectives. As much as I love the RE one through code veronica they still kinda sucked because of the fixed camera angles and tank controls. Just want to reiterate in the modern day tank controls and fixed perspective would not work at all, the sales would plummet and it would be years before Capcom ever attempted a remake again. I'll agree that the B scenario not really changing much besides your pistol and starting point is a let down for me as well, but it's fine I understand they wanted a canon story for both characters.

It was good but remake does the story way better. If you disagree then you’re just straight up nostalgic.
For starters, Kendo is way better presented in the remake as compared to the original. He is a caring father dealing with a heartbreaking situation whereas in the original he just happened to die anticlimactically after just greeting the leon/claire ( he’s even getting his own playable chapter now)
Marvin’s role is way better in the remake who helps leon/claire before he passes as compared to the original where he just gave you a recap of what happened and locked the door.
Brian Irons was genuinely more creepier and unnerving in the remake.

I am the only one who misses gigantic moths, spiders, crows, lickers type 2? A great game but that “small” detail is still present on my mind and won’t go away so easily. Also B scenario was kind of repetitive, I don’t know. Music is forgettable, even though the people in charge of it put their hearts on it and I do appreciate that. Still a great game, but some things are pretty obvious when you think of it. Great video btw!

I moved on and started a different game after finishing Leon A/Claire B... and I honestly thought I was done with RE2. But while playing something else, I find myself just wanting to play through RE2 again. I had the exact same “complaints” as you, but I really do believe this is a top tier experience. It’s gonna be tough for any new release to unseat a game cemented in by nostalgia, but RE2 ‘19 has to be a Top 3-5 for me.
