@@gerrynightingale9045 Whenever I hear a rare Artie solo song, I think of a story shared by a SiriusXM DJ who I remember from his years as a NYC dj. He said he managed to get an invite to the Grammy Awards one year in the 1970s. So he goes into the men's room and immediately gets hit with a cloud of pot smoke. Someone else in there says, "Smells like someone is having a good time." Then one of the stall doors swings open and out comes Art Garfunkel, with the goofiest grin on his face, says "Hi", and walks out. Who knows, maybe it was this Grammy awards.
Grammy's for recording artists don't mean anything nowadays. The only Grammy for recording artists with any meaning is the Lifetime Achievement Award...but this one will also eventually become obsolete.
The awards go to Olivia Newton-John and John Farrar and there isn't a single comment about them. They've always been so underrated by people who don't know much about them which is incredible, considering how talented and influential were in music history. R.I.P., Olivia. Millions of people miss you but your music and your legacy for making this world a better place will remain forever.
Absolutely about JOhn Farrar. Actually Paul Simon was a complete desaster here. They are great musicians, that´s what saved this show. John Lennon did rock it.
I loved John Lennon's bit where he acted like he had to introduce Simon and Garfunkel to each other. John looked liked he was loving any discomfort between Paul and Art, but probably would have had a fit if it was the other way around and Paul McCartney walked out there instead of Art Garfunkel.
I doubt it would have been all that awkward, they were cool with each other again. Most likely it would have brought down the house with John and Paul having an appearance together for the 1st time in several years
Sadly the video cuts off now as Paul & Linda bound down the stairs. There is pics of John & Paul hanging out but no moving video of them together in 1970s. This was the only one, nearly. Wonder if this is Paul's hand at work adding to their mystique. It bugs me..
Paul Simon dishes it back at John saying "you guys getting back together again?" Then John's energy changes and he replies "it's terrible isn't it?..." I love John but that was fun to see his poke get flipped on him.
Then Paul (McCartney) walks on "What's that about Linda?"...then Ringo walks on "Anybody need a drummer, I work cheap?" ...then George walks on "Hey guys hurry it up I'm double parked"....then Elvis walks on (flashes a badge) "You're all under arrest"...then they all start singing Jailhouse Rock.
@MIRobin22 Pretty much. But I think more specifically, when Paul asked "when are you guys getting back together?" about John and Art, he made the Linda joke as if to say Art was Paul in that situation. But it didn't get the laugh he was expecting, which is why he said it was too subtle.
when you hear the songs up for the award, and then you see Paul Simon and John Lennon presenting, it really makes you feel like what the hell happened to the great music scene we had back in the 70's, and how did it turn into the crap that's out today, with a few exceptions, I really love John's personality in this video, a classic TV moment, I just wish he was still around today
its funny most of them are like that except ringo, they were in the biggest band in the world, but they never really liked being "famous" they just wanted to be normal people. Humor is the best way to brush off the pressure that fame puts on you
John was an infinitely creative artist. He was gobsmacked that “talented” people read dialog from cue cards written by comedy interns. He felt compelled to point out the irony that the rest of the audience was ignoring.
He wasn't gobsmacked at all. He was playing a role as rebel. They weren't comedy interns, they were professionals whose bits as written were killing in the house, but no star of that caliber was required to do them. And there's nothing ironic about talented stars doing material written by others, it's a pretty integral and normal swath of show business. Otherwise, you nailed it.
John's Linda comment was a surreal mention of Linda McCartney after the 'getting back together' banter, John unfortunately appears to have forgotten that Art had just split with his wife - Linda.
+ysgol3 I've got a feeling John hadn't forgotten, but was rather fighting for Paul (S) because he found Artie's dig nasty, so he decided to be a bit nastier to Art. I think you can actually hear him say: "Nasty, nasty." That it was a bit of double dig was, well...too subtle.
+Sapharone Interesting point, though Art's reply about the writing was I think just a very witty and well timed reply to the general banter, and particularly to Paul's 'Stay in the car' quip.
+ysgol3 Yes, you can see it like that, but it doesn't really matter how we see it. I think that banter on stage was slowly falling apart, cause all three of them pushed further bit by bit. Just judging facial expressions and body language.
I did some contracting back in the early 2000' and I had several John's working for me and one day I said something about "all of my Johns." The carpenter standing next to me offered me money-for sex,.
Well audiences are so weird expecting former friends to ACT friendly or former spouses to still be in love etc. John went through hell himself when he left the Beatles due to fan criticism as if he needs their consent to leave.

This is such a look back to an earlier age. What fantastic songs. It's also so much fun to watch John Lennon enjoy himself. What's most interesting is that his 'Biting' sarcastic Northern humour gets the best of him and he basically alienates Art Garfunkel taking it just a bit too far. But as soon as Art goes serious accepting the award for the music industry song that artistically mattered the least of all the choices (an obvious stunt pairing Garfunkel awkwardly back with Simon for a brief moment), John shows remorse in a human moment. So glad I got to see this.
John makes me cringe sometimes with his frequent sarcastic / acidic remarks. It's an undesirable trait he's had all his career and life. But he's not famous for his character flaws, he's famous for his music contribution to the world. And that's what matters.

John was an infinitely creative artist. He was gobsmacked that “talented” people read dialog from cue cards written by comedy interns. He felt compelled to point out the irony that the rest of the audience was ignoring.
John had a rebellious attitude. And that could result in him being caustic sometimes.
John was so charismatic and fun. When he comes out dancing 😂

John's Linda comment was a surreal mention of Linda McCartney after the 'getting back together' banter, John unfortunately appears to have forgotten that Art had just split with his wife - Linda.
+ysgol3 Oh dear, awkward!
