I think many people find themselves in this position and i think the reason for this is that we all love to sit down with someone (be it a friend or someone new) and play a game. However I think we tend to forget that the thing that makes games fun isn't the crunchyness or ease of getting into certain rulesets, I would argue it's not even the setting or the models that are being used really, but the real fun from playing a wargame comes from spending time with another person. When we paint or listbuild a new army or get into a new ruleset, we do that with the intent of someday having a great game with someone. I think if we as a community would focus on that aspect of the hobby then there won't be a need for buying a million different boxes and buying into 3 new gamesystems each year. What we as wargamers need is a community first and foremost and a couple systems to focus on because 1 system with like 10 different players in your area has a lot more value to everyone involved than 10 gamesystems with a person each to play it with.
"I think the idea of playing these games is more fun than actually playing them". Man, that hits hard. I love the idea of painting up a whole army and getting the games in, but I can't give up whole Saturdays or much evening time. The dopamine from buying the box quickly wears off when you realise the effort it'll take to see it on the table.
@@ThorekIronbrow haha yeah I can paint at night when the family is asleep but it’s def hard to lose a whole saturday to actually play. I will say the games of the old world I have played were really fun, the only reason I haven’t posted the full battle reports is because it was my first two games and I think I got some rules wrong. Painting is never the problem for me, it’s finding other people who are into the same game as you at the same time whose schedule can line up with yours. Kinda tricky in your thirties 🤷🏻♂️.

You hit the nail on the head, saying the idea of playing the game is what drives the purchase, not the fact that you will actually play it. Companies know this, they know they don't need to have you play a game, they need you to buy a game. That's where their marketing comes in and they sell you not an actual product, they sell you a vibe. It goes for those expensive Kickstarter board games with crappy gameplay, RPG rulebooks for games you'll never play, miniature wargames you'll never find opponents for, video games you collect by the dozen to just sit there on your Steam account for zero reason. Fomo like this is what drives rampant consummerism and we all know what consequences of it are. Buy the things you need and are actually going to use not the ones that are pitched to you. Before buying a thing ask yourself questions Why am I buying it? Who am I buying it for? How often am I going to use it? Do I have something similar? Why do I want it? What in my life is going to be better with it? What happens if I don't buy it? More often than not you buy things for this short shot of dopamine when you order it and another when it arrives.
This was a really interesting and positive video to stumble across. I see you haven't posted a lot of videos, but if the rest are as good as this one you've got an awesome channel.
Warcry has been my favourite game from GW for about a year. The list building is super fun. I love how interactive the terrain can be. I love that I can collect cool models from a bunch of different factions, and kitbash for harder to obtain models. Spear head and warcry seem like a really nice pair of games to get more casual players into the hobby.
I was watching the first half of the video and I couldn't just silence the thought that what you really need is to get a friend and start playing One Page Rules. You can use all those minis you love, play in half the time of any GW ruleset and have a hell of a time. You should give it a go.
@@ThisMiniSucks OPR is absurdly easy. I have been able to teach it to kids and have them playing in 15-20 min. And the fact that you can play with any miniature, completely revitalizes the way you look at your existing collection.
Great stuff. As someone who has ADHD, the hype over new shinies is amplified at least a little bit. I also sometimes genuinely have more fun looking at new games, or preparing to play new games, than I do actually sitting down and playing those games. So what I've discovered about myself is that making stuff with what I have (or what I can get cheap) is a super fun solution as it gives me more hobby to do and then, if it turns out I really want the thing and go buy it, I just have more toys to play with. Good luck with Spearhead. I like it a lot.
What about the cards? Spearhead uses both twist and objective cards. I guess it wouldn't be hard to proxy them and put them on a sleeve with a magic card or whatever
@@Phaymyr91 there are a lot of people who have made printable cards, I wasn’t sure which sets to link, but a quick google search will bring up a few options to print!
I already had all the models for the Seraphon team. I bought the rule book and cards from ebay (probly gutted from a skaventide box). I got the start collecting box for Sylvaneth (the price alone was good for the treelord but it also came with the branchwych and dryads which i was going to get to replace the revenant models) and my brother got me the kurnoth hunters as a late birthday gift. I have no one to play with so I'll worry about a board when the time comes. I got two teams and the rules for around $100 myself! This is a great approach! I would use those tomb kings for any Death army tbh! Looks great, hope you enjoy!
Use your awesome minis go play SAGA: Age of Magic. The games can be played in 90 minutes and there's no shortage of awesoms moments. There's a good balance of both input and output randomness that makes for a very tactical game. Also, allocating dice to your faction board feels really good 👍 A new edition is coming out soon, too 😄
This is kind of why I've never played a game of Warhammer. It's a bit overwhelming and I've honestly no one to play with, or the idea of taking an army elsewhere, is hmm... I've painted plenty, but not played. But I'm reading through stargrave and The Doomed at the moment, to find a smaller, lighter skirmish game, which you can use any minies with.
I don't know about Stargrave, but its cousin Frostgrave is super fun to play. The rules of how "units" must behave, and a little of customisation through the wizard/apprentices make it super interesting, while keeping the rest at a approachable level.
My son bought Skaventide and it should be in in a week or so. I am 3D Printing a Slaves to Darkness warband and can do more if I really get into the game. As an ancient TOW player, let me just say great job on the Tomb Kings!
I had the same issue with 40k. Playing 2k points its such anchore, not only do i need a billion units and know all the things my army does, also need to know the new mission decks and when to do actions, etc. Sigmar has been that game i can play for fun, even if I loose most games i had a great time.
Thank you! Out of all of the games besides spearhead, The Old World is the one I’ve had the most fun with and want to actually commit the time to get good at. It really is a fun and immersive system, I just feel like I have a lot of homework to do before I can really fully appreciate it!
