      The only thing on Birds mind was to win in the most efficient manner possible.
      Don't matter who put it in, just as long as it went in. Unless it was the last shot for the win. Nobody deserved it more than LARRY.

      He averaged a 50-40-90 over 4 consecutive seasons. That may be his most impressive statistic, proving his unparalleled scoring efficiency. Bird remains the most complete player and clutchest shooter to ever play basketball

    Another quick observation with Larry Solid..you know your s**t and your NBA history and I’ve heard you speak on more than one occasion about Larry’s offensive rebounding which was incredible but ever notice how he’d not only get boards against power forwards and centers that were bigger than him but then he’d also get the stick back too and somehow NEVER get the friggin shot blocked??EVER..incredible..great job as always brother👍🏼 God Bless🙏🏼

    Solid I grew up in NYC in the 80’s watching just the Knicks and Nets with no cable but then we moved just over the line into CT then all of a sudden I have cable and now I could still get the Knicks and Nets every night and then big games on Tuesday’s/Friday night’s on TBS then Sunday’s there was always a doubleheader on CBS once the NFL season was over..but there was nothing like the night i was going through all the channels and realized we got the friggin Celtics on a Hartford station🙌🏼 After that I don’t think I missed a Celtics game from 85-91 not to mention all the other NBA games I watched on the other channels..the NBA almost overnight even though I still loved MLB and the NFL became my favorite sport bro the league was incredible..the competition between all those teams and hall of fame caliber players during that era was so intense you wouldn’t believe it kid..Friday night Celtics vs.Detroit..Philly..New York..Chicago on TBS?? Forget about it that was must-see TV..those games were all out wars bro you wouldn’t believe it

    For those that think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those whom never had the chance to see him play.
    Little know thing about Larry to those that never saw him play , he could effect the outcome of a game and never take a shot thats how devastating his passing skills were. Here is one thing that most fans (people) either don't know or try to ignore, prior to Larry joining the NBA there was no such thing as a three point line, that came in when Bird was starting his first year off in his NBA career. Just think about what would todays game be without the three point line or if the line was one foot farther out like it was when it was first introduced. Food for thought.
    At that time it was not about the individuals stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go:
    Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics:
    Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88);
    All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88);
    Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) -- tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012).
    Larry Bird, was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in multiple seasons.
    Career averages:
    24.3 points per game
    10.0 rebounds per game
    6.3 assists per game
    88.6% free throw percentage
    49.6% field goal percentage
    37.6% 3-point percentage
    If you need more proof, just look up the February 14, 1985 game Celtics vs. Jazz where Larry Bird was one steal away in the third quarter from being the second ever quadruple double in league history but he wold have been the first to record one in regulation play. The first one was recorded in Bulls vs. Hawks in O.T. October 18, 1974 that is Nate Thurmond,
    Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. After season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season. The final thing most are unaware of Larry Bird played with threats against his life.

    (15:00) When I came up, bussing had just been implemented in my small Southern rural town. Happened so, I ended up being the only white person on the bus. Picked up first, dropped off last. Every few months a new rider would try me. Funny thing about getting your ass kicked regularly. You freaking learn to fight with your head and hands rather than your face. By the time I was 12, others would shut the new guy (even if he was older and bigger) down right then. "Hey asshole, if you get lucky and win, you got the rest of us to fight next". Then till now, no problems. I think it's the way you carry yourself. I once had to walk through "Liberty City" in Miami after some "unrest". Not one person even looked at me crosseyed. As I was walking back to my car, (ran out of gas) a man called to me from his porch. I walked up and was invited to sit and rest a bit. We sat talking, he burned a couple joints with me and gave me some iced tea. When I was stationed in DC in the Navy, I had good friends in Shaw. If you project any weakness or hesitate once, you are then marked.

    Bird was the first to do it. Did it twice. However, Steve Nash did it 4 times, and missed a 5th time, when he shot 89.9 % from the free-throw line in the 2006-07 season. Had he did it, he would have been in the 50/40/90 club 5 STRAIGHT years. As it stands, Nash did it 3 years in a row.
    Bird and Nash are the only players to be in the club more than once.
    LOVED Bird's game, and had followed him during his college days. If anyone was a real hoop fan, and didn't know Bird was White, they weren't paying attention. Sports Illustrated ran a few feature stories on him, beginning in his first season at Indiana State. I never liked how the MEDIA portrayed him during his first 5 years in the NBA. He earned my respect by his game;mf'er could flat out play. And, he didn't care for how the media tried to prop him up , as basketball's "White Savior". I personally never got caught up in any of that b.s. Friends would tell me that I was giving him too much respect. I just told them, that, if he can't play, he'll eventually be exposed, because your competitors will expose you; BALL DON'T LIE. Once a lot of folks found out he was TRULY legit, "Black" perception of him changed. Turned out, Bird's only "weakness" was a bad back. One of the truly greatest to ever do it. Period.
    My 2nd-favorite Celtic of all-time;"Hondo" Havlicek is my favorite, and Russell third.

      Nash did it as a pure PG though. Dirk was comparable with scoring and the 50 40 90 standard. Nash wasn't the primary scorer when he did it 4 times. Also post 2002 the lane was wide open due to rule changes. That's when the no touch rules started.

    "Could Bird be a great player in the NBA today"? How many times have we heard this?
    But the REAL question is this: "Could TODAY'S players be great in the OG era"? I say a resounding NO! Not unless they could not be afraid of hard play & worried about getting hurt such as a hard intended elbow to the face for example. One other thing is that Bird DID play with black guys -- pick up games. In French Lick, the poorest white town in Indiana? Only 2,000 people? Here is how & what many people don't know.
    French Lick was bordered on a town called "West Baden". West Baden had natural spring waters & there was a tremendous amount of tourists & rich people going there for "natural healing". Larry would walk or bike to West Baden (as his family had no car.) He would play ball with all the black employees of the hotels in West Baden. So here's this teenage white dude playing with adult black dudes & there was no friction. They all were poor & rough/tough. Bird famously said, "I didn't know we were poor. EVERYONE in French Lick was poor."
    And about that fight against Doctor J -- one of the players had him in a headlock. You HAD to step in and scrap or he'd be labelled as a weak guy allowing himself to be bullied.
    And there was only ONE ref during the second half as the other one broke his leg in a collision with another player.
    P.S. If you want to get good basketball books there is the one co-written by Bird & Magic called "When the Game Was Ours". Also Bird's autobiography called "Drive".

      @@dutchtea8354 :) Yeah and Dr. J said in an interview that "We weren't fighting, we just were tussling". OG times and a great sense of humor. This was the famous "Only one ref game." Also remembered as Charles Barkley put him in a headlock to hold him back to give Erving better chances. Loser. Hahahaha In his one book Bird said that he & his two brothers were called "The Bird Boys" as they loved to tussle with each other and others. They sound like holy terrors in their town. But Bird looks like a choir boy. :) But their dad told them sternly that if he ever heard that one son was in trouble the OTHER two had better get in there and help him or he'd tan their hide.

    They estimated that 65% of Larry's shots in college would have been 3 pointers. Remember, no 3pt line yet. Bird didn't practice 3's. Hes highest 3 poibt attemps year was 88 when he was steady injured, he averaged 29.9ppg that year. Today's nba players benefit from a faster pace, and more possessions. Jokic numbers are Bird's numbers today, with a cross between jokic, tim duncan, and luka style -wise is what bird would be in the modern NBA. Bird more effective on defense than jokic or luka.

      @@janetta5153 Same here. I sure miss the 80s basketball, and the host of great players. There are some great players now, but I haven't watched a live game since the early 90s. To me, the NBA has gotten boring and almost ruined with the flopping, no calls on traveling, carrying the ball, or moving screens. Touch fouls, handcuffing the defense, haven't helped much, either. Most games, now, from what I have seen, have devolved to 3 point shooting contests, and dunking contests, in my opinion.

    How do I say this ? I hated Larry Bird. I hated the Celtics. Anyone that played against the Pistons I hated. But at the end of the day, the only, and I mean only guy who struck fear in my heart was Larry frickn Bird. And I really loved Magic. Magic was like poetry. So beautiful to watch. Jordan not so much.. unbelievable talent but something about him even now does not sit right me. I can’t put my finger on it. I don’t know. Some pretty great players back then. I’m in a wheelchair now. My life has been shortened considerably. But I think about those glory days of the Pistons and Lakers and my arch enemy the Chicago Bulls. I think I experienced some really miraculous things and I’ve been a pretty lucky guy to see all these great men competing at a level that I didn’t know existed. I’ve been a pretty lucky guy seeing the only guy who struck fear in my heart every single time I’d see him. If you ever lived in the hood and I have it will not take you long to find out who was the guy you just never flicked with. And believe me if you ever need someone to fight with You in street fight you wanted that guy with you. He may not be from the hood but he was hood all day long. That’s how bad a man he was.
