I watched Larry Bird play in real time, back in the day when I had season tickets to the Knicks in the 80's. The dude was flat out ridiculous bro. I hated him back then, but when you get older, you recognize true greatness. This guy is top 3 all time. Easy.....

I didn't get to see Larry Bird play in real time. I had to watch it tape delayed. I was stationed in Germany, and it would come on Armed Forces Network. I think they only carried the Superbowl live.
Anyway.
We watched the games in the Rec Room. Lots of alcohol was consumed amidst all of the yelling and hollering.
Those were really good times with really good friends.
Wouldn't trade them for anything.

Bird always made sure McHale and Parish got a certain number of passes.That was in his game plan every game he played with them.
I had just graduated high school when he signed with Boston. It changed everything for the Celtics.
As a long time Lakers fan, I never realized the greatness of Bird because it was just basketball, and they were rivals. Some of the most gut-wrenching sports I've ever watched, and I wouldn't change a thing. Now that I'm older and get to see these videos I realize how lucky were, not just to win championships, but to do it against whom I believe to be the greatest ever.
Larry Bird is the GREATEST player that has ever lived. Period.

Larry Bird and Magic Johnson where the absolute shining beacons of hope and tolerance back in the day. A lot of the youth today could learn a lot from studying both these legends.
I ran across a video earlier where he explains to Kevin McHale that he knew since high school he had a knack for knowing not only where his teammates were but what they’d do. He mentioned that he learned from coaches in high school how to anticipate the angle of a rebound. Watch closely and you can sometimes actually see him get in position before the ball even hits the rim. I can try to find a link if anyone’s interested.

I miss all those guys not just Bird. Cedric Maxwell going crazy in the playoffs. The Chief, McHale, Tiny Archibald and his wild drives... Those were the days.
I'm so glad I was around to see it all. That was about the time I got my first VCR, so I never had to miss a game. Magic was right, there will never ever be another Larry Bird.

Barkley was strong in his own right, and certainly was no pushover, but Bird had, and kept him sealed, with his one arm and hip. Thanks for pointing that out. People who say Bird was not athletic were mistaken. He had that big old farm boy build, strength, and endurance.
Chuck was a beast, not just "strong". Having 4 inches on him probably helped some.

27:59 you're completely correct. I'm 110% sure with a 10% margin of error that the celtics would not have won the way they did without larry bird. They didn't even win 50 games when larry bird was out in 88-89, which just goes to show his colossal impact on the team.

Bird is my favorite basketball player, and I still believe he is the greatest when it comes to all around skills combined with the ability to stick the knife in his opponents at the end of the game (I definitely put him ahead of Jordan). However, being as objective as I can be, my GOAT has to be Bill Russell. The reason? From McClymonds High School (2 championships) to USF (2 NCAA titles and a 55 game winning streak) to the NBA (11 rings), all Bill Russell did was win..and win..and win. What you said right at the end absolutely nailed it. Greatness is epitomized by the ability to make your teammates better basketball players, and Russell, Bird and Magic did that better than anyone..by far. This is why they're my top 3.

LOL Bird took a team made up primarily of cast-offs, has-beens and spare parts from 29 to 61 wins his rookie season. The rap on Russell was that he had great teammates, but why were they great? How good would Sam Jones, KC Jones, Satch Sanders, Tom Heinsohn, Frank Ramsey..even John Havlicek early in his career have been if they hadn't played with Russell? My contention is that these guys were great because Russell MADE them great, not the other way around. Just as Bird made Parish, McHale, Maxwell, Henderson et al better players. This may not be fair, but to me Bird's career was hurt a bit by injuries..and his insistence on playing through them (just as Bill Walton's was WRECKED by them).

Russell was 7 feet tall in a league with maybe 1 or 2 other 7 footers. Today, every team has at least 2.

Russell was actually listed at 6'9," which is comparable to other centers in the league at the time, including Clyde Lovellette (6'9"), Jerry Lucas (6'8"), Zelmo Beatty (6'9"), and Gene Wiley (6'10"). There were two true 7 footers in the NBA at the time..Wilt Chamberlain and Mel Counts (being 7 feet tall definitely didn't help the latter of the two, whose career was pretty forgettable). Being 7 feet tall has nothing to do with making your teammates better (evidenced by 7'1" Chamberlain's consistent failure to do so). Other than in 1967, Russell beat Wilt every time. 7'1" Wilt couldn't beat 6'9" Russell even when teamed up with Elgin Baylor and Jerry West. Your point is irrelevant.
You are correct in your assessment of Russel. Remember though … Russel was playing when the NBA was falling down and failing. His play and skills didn’t revive the NBA. Bird and Magic, however, brought the game back from the abyss it was in and made it popular again. That alone puts them head and shoulders above any player before or since.

You hit the nail on the head. The biggest difference between a great player and a top 10 all time player is the work ethic. Larry, MJ, Kobe and Magic put in the extra work. To the extreme. Out of a fear of failure. The biggest difference between MJ, Bird and Magic. Was that MJ put in the same work as Bird, Magic, Lebron and Kobe. But MJ had a big edge in athletic talent. Imagine Bird and Magic with the tools that Lebron or MJ had!
1) Jordan had to wait for 7 years to get his first finals win … because of Bird.
2) Jordan never beat Bird even once in in the 6 times they faced off.
3) Bird is the ONLY player Jordan ever thanked for retiring.
4) Lebron would have never been able to handle Birds psychological game. He would have rage quit by half time.
5) lebron would have never been able to guard Bird. Bird would have broke lebrons ankles every time he got the ball.
6) lebron is a 1 trick pony. Bird would have had lebrons game figured out within 5 minutes and shut him down.
7) lebron never had nor will ever have the will to win that Bird had. Bird had heart. lebron has size and strength. Not even a fair comparison. Bird takes it every time. Doubt me … watch Bird films when he played the Rockets or the 76ers. Both teams were stacked with big string player … and the Bird led Celtics beat the. On the regular.
Jordan was an awesome player to watch. Hands down the most athletic player this game has ever seen. He played back in the day when someone was going ti come off the court bleeding in every game … and he excelled. Lebron has never played in a league that even remotely compares to the 70s and 80s NBA. Yet he’s always having to sit out for fatigue and injuries. The 70s and 80s NBA would have destroyed lebron!!!
Magic and Bird weren’t just awesome players … they were phenoms! They both played at a level that far exceeded basketball. And their rivalry just fuels that level of play. Neither 1 would have been as good a player without the other 1 pushing them. That’s why I always place the 2 of them together. They were like Lucy and Dezi, Fred and Ginger, Laurel and Hardy. They were meant to compete against each other …and become the best of friends.
So yea …. There really isn’t a comparison to be made between any of them. Bird and Magic were then and are now … in a class and a league all their own. And they always will be too.
I was in my late teens when Larry started playing. They aren't kidding that he saved basketball. Back then, they had lost interest in even televising the big games. Then came Larry Legend the most entertaining basketball player since the Harlem Globetrotters. He really had the Harlem Globetrotter sense of humor.
I watch bird since 1984 and till this day he is the best for me.. The Goat.. Why??? Because he beat all and he got 6:0 against mj.. The only player that mj lose all the time..
From a life long C's fan since the 80's I can say we definitely have not had teams like the one's Bird ran in Boston since. Not even close tbh. 🍀

One thing about Larry is that he was cocky as hell but still a really likable guy… I don’t find too many players today likable. I know they all went to college but not many have class like Larry.
I've heard both these men say the Larry Bird is the reason they're in the Hall of Fame

Thanks for sharing this video! I think Bird was the best all around player we have ever seen. He was truly dedicated to his teammates and he cared about them. He made an effort to make sure his teammates got involved in the game ( and he was not the point guard) and still had the confidence to step up at the end of games and hit so many game winning shots. That game in Washington was where Bird actually hit 3 game tying or game winning shots in that one game = the shot that was waived off - and then the shot he made right after the time out ( this was not shown) where he forced the overtime period and then the game winner at the end of the OT. I also liked the game winner in Chicago, over both Pippen and Jordan, when Jordan came to double team. Bird was the main reason Boston went from a 29 win team to a 61 win team when Bird was a rookie. Bird could shoot lights out from anywhere on the court, rebound like a power forward, had court vision and passing like a point guard, was deadly from the FT line, and was super clutch at the end of games. Bird created the 50-40-90 club and is the only "GOAT" candidate that ever had a 50-40-90 season = he had 2 seasons in a row = 87 and 88 of 50-40-90 and was just under the 90% FT in 85 and 86. SO I went back and totaled his 85,86,87,and 88 seasons and Bird averaged 50-40-90 over these 4 years = averaging a per game of 28.1 points, 9.7 reb and 6.8 assists, He was FG of 3384 of 6534 = 51.79% and 3pointers = 325 0f 784 = 41.45% and FT was 1670 of 1854 = 90.07%. In his first 9 seasons in games he played Boston was 534 wins and 177 loses for a win % of 75.1% in the stronger East conference. Bird is the best all around player we have ever seen IMO.

I remember watching the 1987 game against the Bullets when he won the game by one point with a three pointer with no time left in the second overtime. I think I was a hell of lot more nervous than Bird. Regardless, an astonishing performance and just one of the reasons Bird is considered clutch.

Magic & Larry, resurrected the game of basketball......My dad loved basketball, but stopped watching, until the competition between Johnson & Bird was highlighted......What my Dad used to say, about Larry's game, is that it reminded him of someone, who was not only playing basketball, but also, volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, baseball, football, track & Field, soccer, & strategic chess, all at the same time, and was what made him so great 😊He certainly was one of the most unique and gifted players, I have ever watched!
That first 3point contest, Larry hit 11 in a row. 4 out of the first rack, the entire 2nd rack & 2 out of the 3rd.
I lived in Boston in the 80's watched games at home and in the garden. Taking my son to Cleveland Tuesday to watch these new Celtics, passing on the tradition like my dad did with me.
I moved to Boston in 86 and found an apartment near the garden at the end of Storrow Drive. you’ll know where I live. When I tell you that the sign advertising the apartments said “If you lived here, you’d be home now”, you’ll remember.
Anyway, I have never been a sports fan but felt obligated to go watch a few games with some coworkers at the Garden and it’s only now, all these years later, that I realize that I was watching some of the most competitive and aggressive and amazing basketball that would ever be played in my lifetime. I had no idea that he was as good as he was compared to others but DJ, McHale, Parrish and the rest were all part of the discussion then. I remember it being about the team and Larry being an important part of course, but not as much of an individual player as he seems to be being portrayed. He belongs in anybody’s top three but he wouldn’t be there without that team working together the way it did.

There was a train by The Garden. They took all those elevated tracks down. Now, all the subway stops at North Station are underground and the northern half of the commuter rail stops in North Station.
Used to catch that Lowell Line in, though. haha. I miss Boston.
The way Bird could hit you in the hands out of nowhere you HAD to start thinking like him to keep up. You saw it in the all star game clips, players were caught flat footed when passed to them blind. Some star players carry a team but Larry lifted his team.

You see twice in this video Larry shot the 3 pointer near the end of the game, when he needed 2 to tie. Just like Butler tried in the ECF. But Larry makes those game winners, and the EFC MVP trophy was named after Bird for the first time Sunday, for a good reason.
But Larry had already had the off court terrible BASEBALL injury that boomeranged his FINGER so bad he had to screws and pins!!! And that was BEFORE this picture in 1979! Larry "Billy Bob Badass" Bird! I love your channel. Thank you!

You crazy. McHale would have dominated inside on any team. Parrish was a monster, they were great with Bird, but they were great players. Larry did make them better as players and teammates though, so I guess.
Growing up in Philadelphia and 76ers fan during the days of Bird & Magic, I hated them both and their respective teams so much!!! Made the lives of Sixers fans Hell. But even as a kid, I respected them both for their game. Glad we got our NBA Championship in 1983. Can't believe it's going to 40 years next year. Yikes!!

I have to say I completely disagree with your assessment that Lebron is like Larry in the sense that they are both players that are "all about the team."
Lebron is faithful to Lebron and no one else. He isn't loyal to ANY team he plays for. If he thinks the grass is greener somewhere else, Lebron will get on his John Deer and go mow that grass. If he thinks if he could just get certain players on his team, then he will win a Championship. If he don't want you, he'll speak out publicly until he gets his way, and if he don't then he'll take his ball and go home like a little bitch.
Larry was loyal to Red. Red stayed loyal to Larry. Larry was loyal to Boston. Boston was loyal to Larry. Larry was loyal to whoever was on his team. His teammates were always loyal to Larry and would throw down with anyone to defend the best player to ever touch a basketball.
Because of Larry's loyalty, no one will ever forget that he played on the Boston Celtics, and from 84-86 they were the best team in basketball, and losing to the lakers in 85 doesn't make the previous statement untrue. They proved that in the 86 season.
Saying that Lebron is like Larry because they are both "all about the team" really can't be true under close scrutiny.

Excellent point... They named it the "Bird rule," for a reason. The year you become a free agent, the team you play for has first dibs on your contract. LeBron always went with the most money. Bird could have signed with a different team twice, but chose to stay in Boston.

The Bird versus Barkley game came after Larry's injuries. His back was already injured. They didn't give the date on this video but I believe it was near the end of Bird's career and he was still playing that tough against someone like Barkley who was known for toughness. March 11th 1990 with seriously bad back injuries and after double Achilles surgeries, Bird scored 41 against Barkley and Bird always had the toughest players guarding him.
26:33 it always amazes me that he's so clutch that he even hit the final shot for his own side quest on a buzzer beater. LOL

That pass at the 7:09 timestamp in this one, is what I loved about watching him play in addition to the phenomenal shooting and everything else. I agree with the Clayton fella, who made Larry's "GOAT- Making the Case" video. Bird really did have eyes in the back of his head and he always ALWAYS knew where every player was on that court. And, not just his team but the other team too. I had such a blast just watching him from so far away, just in the TV. I miss him playing and really, if Mike hadn't come in when he did? I don't think I'd have kept watching the game because with Larry gone, it was hard for me to find other players at the same caliber. A'course Mike WAS there and that made all the difference. After MJ retired though, I didn't stick around much. I will catch a game here and there but I don't watch nearly like I used to when Larry was playing.
The greatest indicator of greatness is after all his clutch game winning shots look at the opposing players reactions, they're all like r u kidding me not again Bird, this is getting ridiculous, or they're laughing cuz they just can't believe that he did it to them....again. Bird Is the GOAT.

My step dad's boss had season tickets, fourth row. He only used them for an occasional playoff game. My step dad had no interest so my brother and I sat within reach of Red Auerbach, smelling his cigar smoke and watching Larry and the boys. It was like watching the Harlem Globetrotters. After that era I lost all interest in basketball. We'd seen the best.

Charles Barkley started playing the same year Bird's back was injured doing his mother's driveway and yet Bird won 21 games versus Barkley winning 14 and Charles' wins mostly happened on the injury years. Bird won the final 3 times they played which was in 90 and 91. Bird playing injured and playing that tough still affects me emotionally.
I believe you might say that time-out shot of Larrys was the only time in NBA history a player made TWO game winning shots in the SAME GAME. I guess he more correctly duplicated the game winning shot, but still thats as close as anyone will ever come to making two game winning shots in the same game. lol
When you mentioned the gym, Larry would outlast all the greats. No one put in the work like he did to be great at every facet of the game.
If Bird had hit that game winner in the finals that year, there would really be no discussion about who is the goat anymore. Frankly, that shot goes in 7-8 out of ten times, and Riley knew he and his Lakers got lucky.
That one double team buzzer beater was vs Jordan and Pippen, when Larry had a broken back and already had surgery on two feet. The true GOAT.

I always say Larry combined basketball and volleyball when it came to passing.
...and football with his diving for balls and full court passes. You had to have wide receiver skills to not be embarrassed playing with Bird.
McHale said that Larry would add a spin to his bounce passes so that it would end up exactly where it needed to go for the guy receiving it.

1:23 Boston Garden was built directly over North Station, a major junction for subway, commuter rail & Amtrak. A lot of people park outside the city and take the train in and walk up the stairs to the Garden.
A few years ago when statues were being torn down. I saw a meme that showed the LB statue and the caption just said "Why isn't this statue being torn down? LB abused so many Black players" 😅😅😂😂
This man practiced so much he had Wilson naturally tattooed on the palm of his hands. He practiced out of bounds shots, off balance shots, all day every day. His wife only had one thing to worry about Larry being faithful…his other love was basketball.
