You've absolutely nailed this. Most detailed Helix patch I've seen and the best Slash one. Would love to see you do Nuno Bettencourt or Dave Gilmour next, please.
YOU NAILED IT! Just like the album. Also works well for November Rain and the rhythm works good for all the other tunes on AFD. Best patch that I have ever downloaded by far. All that being said Over the last year I have found that Helix Native patches DO NOT translate well to Helix floor models. I know that they are the same(same but not really)....however because Native sits inside a DAW it significantly alters the tone and that can cause issues translating presets to floor models of Helix. I made some adjustments for volume (you should get an email from me) and that was it. You nailed it; the balance of rhythm and lead is great. And you are right, pick attack has a HUGE effect. Awesome tone and great job. Hope to hear more patches from you soon...... Thanks, Ben Brown
Thanks dude for the tone , i didn’t do it on helix but with pedals , all you need is distortion about on 6 or 6,5 a wah (ON) cause its gives you a lot of mid and also you need a delay and reverb both of them , so you need 4 pedals to get very close to scom tone
Hey Ben, I loved the tone and tried to reproduce on my own. I wasn’t happy so I bought yours and tried to use it without the LIRs. It’s good, but not quite as good as you have on the video so I want to get the LIRs you describe but I don’t see the exact ones. I see a Marshall 1960A with G1275s (not T75s) and I see a Marshall 2551 with vintage 30s (not a 2251). Are those the right ones?
Hi alexandrikos, thanks for getting the patch! yeah the stock cabs one isnt quite as close as the IRs for sure. The ones I used are the MARSH 251 and the MARSH 196A both from 3 Sigma Audio, so yeah sounds like you have the right ones there. My bad with the speaker naming, I think I renamed my IRs with the wrong speakers. So yeah the MARSH 196A has G1275s in and the MARSH 251 is a 2551 cab with V30s. Hope that helps
@@BenHartwellGuitar Hi, Ben. I also bought the same IRs, but not sure which wave-files to use. You have 1a, 1b, 2a, etc. Which ones are you using for this tone? EDIT: Nevermind, just saw from your video that you use 2a and 5b. Thanks for this, will buy your tone-setup too to support you. :)
Ben - Should I leave the WAH on for SCOM intro? If so, where to I put my pedal? BTW, I have two pedals, the built-in one and a Mission Engineering 2nd pedal. Or did you set this to some predefined setting and touching either of the pedals won't change it?
The second wah in the chain should be on for the whole song, that’s what gives it the throaty sound. You can turn the first wah on for the solo. You could assign that to your mission pedal, I hear hear they are really nice pedals.
Question: During the first half of the solo (the melodic part before it kicks in) it sounds like Slash has a light wah going throughout that whole part... how would you recommend duplicating that? Is there an auto wah on the Helix?
yeah I'm not sure what's going on there. I don't think its like an auto wah or anything. it sounds very similar to the main tone just with less top end and that half cocked wah a bit more prominent. I wonder if he rolled off some tone for that part of the recording.
Ben Hartwell Thanks for the reply!! Yeah, I didn’t think there was an auto wah on the recording either. But since the two halves are different takes (overdubs) it sounds like footed a wah during the first half but just less prominent. Maybe they added it in post production? I was thinking if the Helix had something comparable to a slight wah effect that would sweep slowly, you could just assign it to one of the buttons; click it on during the first part of the solo and then turn it off before the second half of the solo where you click on the actual wah. If you ever have any suggestions feel free to let me know. Thanks again for putting these tones together. -Matt
No probs. Yeah I think the way I would do it is increase the mix of the half cocked wah, and then add another eq just to get it as close as possible. Then I’d add it as another snap shot like ‘Solo A’ and ‘Solo B’. When I’ve seen him do it live it’s all just volume control and that’s how I tend to do it.
Hi Ben, great tone!! I understand that I would have to buy the 2 IRs from 3 sigma, which is fine (pls correct me if I am mistaken). But have you got instructions in the patch to mix these 2 IRs? I am asking as IRs play such a big role in getting the tone. Thanks!!
Hi Rajesh, yeah thats right the tone uses the 2 IR's from 3 Sigma. When you load the patch into Helix all the properties of the IR will already be set, so all you should have to do is select the right IR within Helix. If you need any more help let me know, or check out the other video i did on loading IRs : ua-cam.com/video/ZqKGli068ic/v-deo.html thanks, Ben
Hey man, amazing job on achieving the SCOM tone. I’m trying to reproduce this tone with conventional equipment, can u please tell me the delay and reverb settings? Thanks a lot!!
MICHEL RAFFIN this is using the Helix Native plugin. You could connect the Helix with usb or you could run the XLR outputs from the Helix to the inputs on your Apollo. Best way is usb I think, then you can re-amp later if you want 👍
I've not tried it yet. The new pitch models are meant to be really good tho. As long as you play loud enough to cover the acoustic sound of the strings ;)
Hi Ben, I purchased your patch and it sounds great for the intro/lead but my lows/power chords are very muddy. I am using the eq at the end to tweak but no dice. I am using a les paul studio with the neck pick up rolled down to about 6 and tone at 5.... appreciate some guidance on this one! I want to use it live next weekend!
Sure thing dude. Thanks for getting the patch. So the way I use it live is I keep my tone on 10 and ride the volume depending an which part I’m playing. That’s with my LP with classic 57 pups. For the power chords I use the bridge pickup as the neck would probly sound dark. Then on the desk I just high and low pass as needed depending on the venue. What gear are you using other than your LP?
Ben Hartwell hey there thanks for the reply, I think I’ll absolutely need to use the bridge pick up on my LP. As far as gear I’m running the helix to my HS5 at home. I have them on pretty loud when dialing In. For live I go straight to FOH. I’m using ML sound lab green back IRs (same mics as you) but the muddiness happens with the stock cabs too. Any other tips? Like I said the intro sounds great
I think switching to the bridge will help for sure. Muddy is the opposite from what I’ve had tho. The patch is a bit bright when I use it live. So I just roll some highs off from the PA to tame it a little

I’ve stolen a Paul Hindmarsh idea & don’t have amp model in patch for super clean tone[ Stays super clean whether I use Strat Or my JP Ernie so very convenient. Ideally I’d love that patch either eq to be more amp like or someone figure out way to keep amp model super clean with more output. Sorry for being long-winded 😜
@@lpgoog cool, no worries dude. yeah i know what you mean. i use the Friedman BE model for my main sound on the Helix and i run the gain about 1-1.5! and its still too much sometimes! for my big cleans i use the model of the Fender Bassman but run it thru a Marshall handwired IR and that really helps. Also run a compressor in front of it and that helps give it that feeling of a fender on high volume without breaking up too much if you push it.
