John, you are a superstar. Thanks for writing an incredible book, which I have read 4 times. What an exciting past you have had, but thanks for making the decision to help these beautiful ocean animals get back to where they belong, in their own environment.

Here are some good nonfiction books about orcas : Death at Seaworld: Shamu and the Dark Side of Killer Whales in Captivity by David Kirby, Into Great Silence: A Memoir of Discovery and Loss among Vanishing Orcas by Eva Saulitis, Beneath the Surface: Killer Whales, SeaWorld, and the Truth Beyond Blackfish by John Hargrove, Killer in the Pool by Tim Zimmermann, Swimming with Orca: My Life with New Zealand's Killer Whales by Ingrid Visser, Listening to Whales: What the Orcas Have Taught Us by Alexandra Morton.

People, please read his book "Beyond the surface" - it is amazing and it tells so much more than blackfish. Don't get me wrong, blackfish was very, very good, but in the book you get so much information about the orca's, their characters and how they love in their natural habit. It is available in aidiobook form, too. Just go to Amazon or use audioable. And to get this straight : I don't know John, I am from Europe and I finished the book 2 days ago. I am writing this because I want to and I really hope he will write more of them. My respect for this man is very, very high. He fought pain medication with opioids and I know that fight. I saw these big macho men crying like babies when they didn't have their medication and John got it. He has so many injuries, I wonder how he can live with them without that pills. 2) to leave the whales he loved to much and spoke out shows a strong character. I hope we will hear more from him. Best wishes from Austria 😀👍👍🇦🇹

Well done, John! Though I already read the part in your book, you had me in tears speaking about apologizing to Takara while she was being inseminated by the vet. Having those close, almost spiritual connections with killer whales is so very special & I'm grateful that Takara had you.

I agree. A trainer leaked a photo 2 years ago of a whales fin cut in half and infected. Gate fell on the whale. But SeaWorld said no big deal he is OK. Lolita over 50 years old in a round backyard swimming pool that is so small. SeaWorld has been fined for it. And she is alone. They left her in the pool during the last big hurricane. They promised to make her pool bigger but instead bought roller-coasters. Google her pool. Celebrities are speaking out against SeaWorld and want to donate money for sea pens where they can retire in the ocean with the trainers taking care of them. Baltimore Aquarium sent their dolphins to a sea sanctuary. About time and a few other aquariums have to. Trip Advisor dropped SeaWorld from their package deals and celebrities refuse to play there. They tell the fans at concerts stay away from SeaWorld. Watch the captain tell his story on catching the babies whales for SeaWorld on UA-cam . It's graphic. It's his biggest regret. Hearing the mom's crying for their babies and vice versa had me sobbing. He said they shot the mother"s and put rocks in them to sink them. That's SeaWorld. Yeah they help animals but they also keep ones that are supposed to be released. Sorry this is long but it's still going on with Lolita over 50 years old in a small pool. I can't even imagine her life. So wrong.

@Sarah Arshad VIII-C-A China are horrible to the animals. Dog meat farms. Unbelievable what they eat and do to animals. Luckily Dog meat festival where they cook dogs alive are being saved every year. Celebrities go there and offer lots of money and buy the dogs and brought back thousands of dogs to adopt. They steal people's pets to cook them. It's so horrible to see. They laugh to. China is not a good place obviously.

Finally getting around to reading the book right now. It isn't a writing masterpiece, but oh my goodness, the stories this amazing man has to tell! I was hooked by the third sentence. The book is vulnerable and really dives into the delusions we have about the natural world and wildlife around us and our fascination and desire to control those aspects. It's a great read so far, can't put it down.

@Sarah Arshad VIII-C-A Yes. If you can watch the Captain on here tell his story of taking the baby Orcas for SeaWorld from the mom's. The mom's followed the boats as the babies cried. Then they shot the mom's and stuffed rocks in to them to sink them. I was crying. Captain said it's his biggest regret. How a person can do that I will never understand. You will like the book. Eye opening 💯. Both trainers books are good. Have a great day.

the real answer is hargrove is a megalomaniac. He has to be the star. He has claimed he was the star of Shamu Stadium. He would only do the movie if he was given a star credit. Do you think it was a coincident that he decided to leave SeaWorld the second time just before the movie came out. In this interview alone he states that he can not believe that he had to compete with other people in his career at SeaWorld. Do you think he doesn't like being in these interviews and traveling on someone else's dime?
