  • Blackfish is a doc about killer whales, people they have killed, and how companies manipulate the public into thinking it's all just good, educational fun. You'll never look at Sea World the same way again after seeing this film.

I don't understand those who say Blackfish is a lie. You can tell he is speaking from the heart. Unlike all the obviously scripted, fake acting of SeaWorld "interviews". Maybe that's why they weren't in the film... all those impromptu interview questions don't give em enough time to think up a good answer.

The UK outlawed dolphin and whale captivity in marine parks in the 90's.
It is long overdue for America to have a public debate on the cost of animal captivity, particular for entertainment .

    • @davidkeenan5642
      @davidkeenan5642 10 років тому +15

Actually we didn't outlaw it, it's just that public opinion here changed.
But obviously legislation will be required in the US. India recently granted cetaceans nonhuman personhood rights. What the US needs is a high profile politician with the courage to lead the debate. It was afterall a single politician that led the campaign to ban the capture of orcas in US waters.
First captive breeding needs to be banned. But there also needs to be a ban on the import & export of orcas. Otherwise SeaWorld & others will just transport sperm abroad & import calves back into the US.

Her tank is so small her tail touches the bottom when she is vertical for tricks. I remember going to sea world at age 13, so about 1996, seeing the shows from the orcas and dolphins. I always thought it was strange that these animals preform but the other animals aren't. I thought the oracs and dolphins tank would be more like their sea environment with plants, sand and rocks. Then I went back with my roommate in 2003 from a promotion that I did while working at Disney Worlds College Program and the American Red Cross. I was in my early 20's, I still didn't see any physical upgrades too the orcas and dolphins tanks. I remember thinking that was sad because they put in a roller coasters that easily coast a hundred million. I never learned anything while at the park about any of the animals.

      Quincy A
Sorry Quincy A, your knee jerk reaction of "Why do humans have such a desire to see animals up close? And then act like its soo good for kids to see animals up close. Ok, go see them in the wild if its that important to your kid! Youll get a way better understanding of that animal" dosnt help the cause much.
I am in complete agreement that its a dead loser of an idea to keep an animal like a killer whale in a large swimming pool. The reason is certainly not because "theres no good reason for humans to have such a desire to see animals up close? And then act like its soo good for kids to see animals up close".
The reason is simple. For an animal with the kind of intelligence a killer whale possesses, putting them in such a closed environment inherently is going to result in something akin to mental torture.
Modern zoo's provide for more room to roam for much smaller animals with less intelligence than a killer whale. The confines a killer whale in captivity is kept in is bound to be hard on their mental state, very hard on many of them Im sure and practically fatal to the mind of a whale with less capacity to live with such a situation, as Im sure isn't rare.
But humans and their children seeing animals, and animals up close is important. Sure, its great if you can see them in the wild. Problem is, the vast majority of "humans" cant afford a trip to Africa or South America, or any such place. And then, even if everyone could afford such a thing, we would only be invading their environments where they actually should be living in the wild in a fairly human free existence.
Do not downplay the critical importance zoos and other such facilities have in the education and understanding that society in the modern world can learn from and appreciate about the animal kingdom, a kingdom which we actually hold the oddest and most unusual positions in. If you think that without zoos and such humans would, in the larger more general big picture around the world start treating animals better, your wickedly mistaken.
But there has to be lines we do not cross, particularly when common sense dictates different. And we need to continue to pursue more human and reasonable ways to show as many people on earth the wildlife that does exist, that it is real, it is life, and we need to protect it from us.

      1) At bachelor level, you must be able to question yourself on the environment you are working with.. You are smart enough to get information not only on the proximity conditions but also on the kind of Organization it is, where and how they bought the Animals.
2)Much respect for M. Hargrove and Ms Coperthwaite as they now defend the defenseless and voiceless. But honestly something strikes me on the way they changed their mind just after the death of one of their workmate and how reacted SeaWorld.. So , if there was not Human death, they would have never realized before that those place such SeaWorld were Evil for Animals?

I can't believe Sea World hasn't shut down yet, even after the release of this movie. Why do people let Sea World just move on? It's bizarre. We now live in a world of internet and ever developing technology that we don't need zoos and aquariums anymore. People can now watch how whales live and behave in their natural habitat through a HD screen, anywhere, anytime. And in the near future, thanks to the advancement of virtual reality, god knows how realistic and tangible the experience of watching a whale documentary will become! Scientists and policy makers are also coming up with clever ways to successfully construct eco tourisms where both nature (national parks and marine reserves) and the local community benefit. Now people (if they can afford to travel) can experience in real life, without harming them, how the animals actually live and behave in their natural habitat, while helping the natural ecosystem and the local economy flourish. When there are so many amazing alternatives like these, why continue this old practice that results in so much sacrifice and damage not only to nature but also eventually to us humans. It's really the time to stop. In fact, zoos and aquariums were bad practices from the very beginning because they kept intelligent, free-roaming animals in captivity for mere entertainment. Except for the ones that do conservation work and scientific research with the money they earn, zoos and aquariums are replaceable and they only do harm.

Dukes, Tilikum victim #2, definitely got more than he bargained for when he entered the Orca's pool. Apparently Tilikum didn't stop at making his point by Killing Dukes, as the Orcinus orca proceeded to strip him, chew his nutsack off, before swimming victory laps around the pool with his artistry slumped over his back!

I live in Florida and have NEVER been to Sea World and never will. I did watch the Pelican video :( but that was all. I do however go often to the North West Coast and into BC to marvel at these beautiful animal's.
To see them on their term's in their world is FAR better than in a fish tank doing trick's. The trick's in the wild are far more beautiful than you will ever see in a Theme Park.
There is a kind of special feeling when you are with them that I have with no other animal's. They like to play and show off, they come to the boat's so you can see them and they interact with you on their term's as it should be.
I feel as they are, what I call, God's gift to us and it is now time to fix what we have put these Whales thru, whether it be release or hey all that money these park's are making, larger incloser's for the one's who don't come from the wild. SOMETHING for them as we have TAKEN so much from them.

I think of Sea World, and I'm like, yeah the sea itself is it's own world. But y'all don't represent it as such. It's a couple very large swimming pools. And in those pools reside the second most dominant apex predator on the planet. Masters of a world in a swimming pool. Not effing cool, man. It just ain't right. It's unholy.

I'm Black.. I'm Gay .. And I am a Dolphin. Okay I am mixed Black and White.. but really, why all the labels? Right is right and wrong is wrong.. anyone with a heart knows right from wrong, and if not from just sheer feelings, what about that brick in most peoples head? Think people. Would you want to swim around in a cage? Beg for food? In one video I heard a trainer yell NO FISH when a "whale" did not obey a command at a show. Pretty sad.

This movie and other videos I have personally watched have given legitimate proof that SeaWorld does not really care about their whales. They claim they are taken care of and that everything is fine but they hire people to come and take these whales from the wild.

So many people have an opinion about animals in captivity but they don't realize how many inconstancies this film has. This particular whale was never captured by SeaWorld affiliates. He was actually captured and brought to Canada. SeaWorld acquired him in hopes that they would be able to help the animal. The tragedy with Dawn was due to many mistakes by the trainer and if she were alive, she would be ashamed of this film. Her life was about SeaWorld and Orcas.

I just viewed Blackfish, I haven't checked when it came out but it doesn't matter because this film is so important in so many ways. We have a facility here in Hawaii called Sealife Park and I've always had conflicting feelings about the best thing for the animals. From a total layman's view the bent dorcel fin was a clear sign of this can't be right for the animals to me. Now I have more knowledge and I can better understand the different sides of this complex and for me always sad situation. Until we do the best thing for the animals it will always be sad and a not condoneable situation.

I watched the pelican video and my response was THIS should be the show! (If they're in captivity). It was crazy how the trainers were frantic 2 redirect the whales' behavior. They were following their instincts & all the whales got in on it--in the wild they are strategic, group killers. When the trainers couldn't get the whales back on track, they stopped the show and a trainer dived in the pool to get the bird bits; they were clueless that the audience loved it--they got 2 c REAL whales

Blackfish are not as preoccupied with the Killer whales as they should be, if they were we could find their documentary online for others to see and also change peoples minds, in fact provoke people's outcry, it could go viral, it's so wrong and cruel keeping these smart creatures in tiny fishtanks, many people need to see/hear to believe it and most would be pro-active if they had more insight. If Blackfish PEEPS cared enough by now they would make it public and free.

But that means nothing, the film clip exactly matched what the woman was describing. Another ex trainer said she was misled as to what form the movie would take, & maybe she was, but that does not discredit the facts that the movie did present.
Another ex trainer challenges certain testimonies by contributors to the film, so we should question them, but that does not discredit the film as a whole.
Testimony is often the weakest form of evidence. People should always fact check what people say, & also weigh how important to a case that testimony is.
Blackfish is not a perfect movie, but it raises important questions.
1 - Are the conditions that SW keep their orcas in acceptable?
Remember SW's are probably the best in the world. But they are still woefully inadequate & hark back to the days when zoos kept animals in totally unsuitable conditions.
2 - Do SW practices endanger the health & lives of their employees?
Well if you look at the list of captive orca attacks on people, obviously they did, & they're seeking to do so again.
3 - Does SW strive to mislead the public solely for profit?
Well yes, both in what they tell the public & what they don't. They blatantly lie about lifespans & dorsal fin collapse, & they don't tell people about the terrible dental problems some of their orcas suffer, or that they have to fed antibiotics to try & keep them healthy. Or that they breed hybrids, or that they inbreed. Two things that never happen naturally.
4 - Is what SW does regarding orcas educating the public?
No, in fact it's the reverse. SW present the illusion that their orcas are happy & healthy in captivity, but all cetacean biologists say that orcas are totally unsuitable to be kept in captivity.
5 - Is it ethical in the second decade of the 21st century to train animals to perform for our entertainment?
If you say no, then there's no way you can condone the shows SW put on.
6 - Should orcas be bred in captivity?
Many captive breeding programmes are justified. Species have been rescued from the brink of extinction by such programmes. But orcas are not at that stage yet, & every orca bred in captivity would be useless if they were.
      So why breed them?
It's simply to keep their parks stocked with circus performers.
7 - Has SW engaged in unscrupulous practices?
Absolutely. The holding facilities they maintained in Iceland just being one example.
I'm happy to see Blackfish criticised, if at the same time people can adequately answer the questions it raises, a few of which I have listed above.

In answer to some of your points
1... I think it's great they are planning bigger pools
2... Yes I guess it is dangerous, but then again, many jobs are dangerous.
3... I think it's unfair to say they are misleading the public for profit, they do LOTS of work regarding wild animals, rehabilitating injured animals etc... regardless of your thoughts surrounding dolphins/orcas in captivity, they do lots of other work.
4... I think any interaction a person has with an animal is educational, it may just be understanding the size/power etc, but it is still educational. How many marine biologists, vets etc went to seaworld/zoo/circus etc and fell in love with animals because of it!
5... I don't see a problem in the 21st century training an animal for public performance. So long as they are well taken care of.
6... Maybe, maybe not... but I'd rather they were captive bred than wild caught... everyone is against animals being taken from the wild (which used to be common practice) but these days, SeaWorld is running a captive breeding program... I would have thought that was more positive than taking from the wild?
7... Quite possibly, I wouldn't know all of their practices, nor would I pretend to know... but the same could be said for this snuff piece you refer to as a documentary... is it 100% fact, is their any misleading information or half truths, I'm sure there is.

It is so hard hard for people to see reality from someone else's point of view; weather on one side of a debate va another, whether you are primate/human vs cetacean, whether you are have a financial incentive vs feel empathetic pain etc. Though it is tough, it is not impossible. We all need to step up to the shift that is calling us in the realm of animal rights and allow our natural ethic and empathy evolve. If that results in financial shifting, or even loss, so be it. Corporations like Sea World, with their vast resources, creativity, and knowledge can find a better way to generate revenue and even funnel revenue toward real conservation and defense (like Sea Shepherd). We in the public need to make that very clear to them by divesting our energy and money from their current business structure. I admire these two and all the rest who are speaking a clearer version of the truth.

Orca cannot have general anesthesia because they are voluntary breathers (putting them under would kill them as they must think to breathe). They can and do have local anesthetics (and can tolerate Valium), but this is not exactly a trip to your dentist's office. They may feel a great deal of the pain and not necessarily show it. SW veterinarians will do all they can to prevent pain in their patients as long as it does not threaten the whales lives.
