Everyone should watch "Blackfish"! It is on Netflix. It is heartbreaking and beautifully done. Even when you realize it is one-sided, that one side is the correct one. Thank you Jeff, John, Sam, Gabriela, Tim and everyone else who participated.

What has sea world lied about? The health of their animals is subpar. They claim the captive orcas live longer than free orcas, that’s not at all true and whale tracking and studies of native orcas in the pacific proves that. They claimed dawn was dragged in by her hair, when video showed the orca grab her arm.

@@donaldmorrison3857 Seriously? Then what do you think about the deaths Tilikum has brought? What do you think about the agressions for example Kandu with Corky, what do you think about orcas dying from diseases that don't affect them in the wild? John, Jeff, and Sam - I would just like to thank you for all of your interviews, personal experiences, and extensive research about these regal, magnificent, highly evolved animals that we are so fortunate to share this planet with. I've always been fascinated by the highly evolved social lives of cetaceans; however, it wasn't until watching Blackfish when it first aired on CNN that my desire to learn more about these animals, specifically orcas, in captivity and the various ways in which we may someday be able to attend this barbaric treatment of such intelligent animals. I'm a biology teacher in upstate NY and just adopted an orca for my students through The Whale Museum as a way to share my interest and hopefully continue to pass on this sense of increased awareness. I also follow all updates on The Orca Networ and Orca Project Thank you, again, and please continue to share!

What you guys have done is amazing. I am floored. My heart is pain when I think about these magnificent creatures who continue being held in captivity. I recently was involved in a small "Instagram War" with a use named of "BlackfishIsALie" and I am astounded how delusional she is of this animal abuse. She called me names and told me I was idiot for being anti-Sea World and anti-captivity. She believes that animals "thrive" and are "happy." My question is, how many more people like her, are out there? What is truly unbelievable is that Sea World does not own up to their lies and continue NOT to educate the public properly about these whales. They don't even try to defend themselves. Why? Because they cannot! They lack any scientific proof that their whales are happy and healthy etc. I am so glad that, YOU, the "Voice of the Orca's" is taking a stand and telling the truth to the world. I will end on this, "Money Talks," that's why these whales continue to be in Sea World. Thank you.

I have had a tremendous passion for cetaceans since the 70's when I was a small child. I have an aquarium practically in my backyard and spent many hours visiting and loving our local belugas and bottlenose dolphins. These animals are breathtaking and yet their stories are heartbreaking. I have spent hours reading and viewing all of your stories. So....I have to applaud all of your efforts and as much as I can, I would love to join in the fight. Thanks to all of you! Much respect!

One of the things I appreciated about this interview is that Dr. Jett refused to speculate on things that he did not have direct knowledge of. I have less respect for the interviewer, as a lot of the questions seemed very leading. I watched Blackfish on Netflix last Sunday and have been devouring information every day since about the issues raised by the documentary - I have read everything on The Orca Project and everything on the Voice of the Orcas. I live 20 minutes from Marineland. Home of Canada's last captive orca. I just wanted to add to the warehouse comment. This is 100% true. Junior was housed in this warehouse for 4 years straight and died in this disgusting barn. No fresh air, and no sunlight. This is where Kiska lives during the closed season. Ric OBarry has also attended this facility to help get a badly abused dolphin out named Duke that would not have cost the owner John Holer one dime and he refused to let this dolphin retire. Duke died in this warehouse. Hundreds of cetaceans have died at Marineland. The whistle blowers have law suits of 1.5 million each and 8 people in total are dealing with these lawsuits all in the name of trying to help the animals from suffering and for trying to be their voice. There are new laws now in Ontario that have almost past and will make a positive difference but for now, it's not passed yet and Kiska's future looks terrible as this law does nothing to help her isolation problem. She's been there since 1979. Truly a horrible place.

An energetic creature of this size clearly needs far more space.
The idea of a sea pen is marvelous idea for these majestic creatures who should be able to permanently retire in some way. After all they have been providing so many years of service to their 'owners' and the public in a confined space.

Really enjoyed this video, you could really see the emotion when he spoke about seeing them in the wild to what he has seen at SW and its so sad, I feel so bad for all the orca, dolphins etc that are kept in captivity and feel they all should be free in some way, if they can't be released into the wild then the sea pens that I've seen computer makeups of during another video on here, is definitely the way to go, where they live in huge huge pens around an island, there is ways to make pens from 135ft long to even longer by being able to open gates between each one, plus the run that goes all the way around the island on the outside of the pens where any whales that have been rehabilitated are able to be moved from one side of the island to the other where they have less and less human contact until one day the gates are opened and away they can go, leaving the gates open for sometime in case they are struggling and wish to return for food etc. These beautiful beautiful animals are so important to our oceans and with the way we treat our land and seas and the animals with in them before long it will be to late to make things right and reverse any wrongs. I saw a wonderful illustration today which showed an orca in a glass tiny tank looking out very sadly at an elephant holding a newspaper stating that a certain circus had closed its doors, and the elephant is saying to the orca "There is hope". I really do hope there is, when we look at elephants, tigers, lions etc. working in circus's now we are disgusted by the practise and talk about how inhumane it is, well its only the same thing for these sea animals, they are the next circus performers and its been going on long enough, its time to stop.

Dr. Jett makes note of how a comment that touched him made by another former trainer that "Their not our animals. They belong to them." I thought the comment Dr. Jett made had just the same effect on my own feelings that really summed it up for me. It was when he mentioned that he did not want to take his daughter to a place where animals held in captivity this way. To paraphrase, he didn't want to teach his daughter that this is a proper way to treat our "KIN". It really found that so very profound. The only grace in all of this, in my humble opinion, all of these people who cared for them are not only brave but a blind stupid lucky find for a corporate mindset who defines global abuse in policy and structure. I would Imagine even Nic Marks would agree. Creator of the Happy Planet Index. You are a hero's in my book.

I'm, like, way late to the party, but I recently rewatched Blackfish and then got dragged into one of my what I call information binges and have been digging into this issue wherever I can find it. I read Death at Sea World about a week ago and two days ago, I finished John Hargrove's book, Beneath the Surface. I've also started reading Dr. Jett & Dr. Ventre's paper on Keto and Tilikum and the stress of captivity on orcas...does anyone (including you, Dr. Ventre or any of your friends) have any other book recommendations for me? I have a hard time surfing the web on my phone typically, but the work I do is...for lack of better word, boring during down time, so I've been reduced to using my phone without a connection (Kindle app). I plan to peruse Voice of the Orca on my computer, but I'd love more book recommendations for use on my phone if there are any out there you think would be good ones to read. The more information I can get, the better! This whole issue just breaks my heart, but I feel like if I'm not armed with a wealth of knowledge, there's very little I can do beyond the usual spreading the word about the issue on social media or refusing to attend any SeaWorld (or other marine) parks, so I am currently looking to sponge up any information I can get my hands on to be a more informed voice when spreading the word.
Thank you, by the way and very sincerely, to all three of you involved with this interview (Ms. Berg in interviewing, Dr. Jett in answering frankly, and Dr. Ventre for posting).

Hi, could you tell me, would I find the paper by Dr. Jett & Dr. Ventre's paper on Keto and Tilikum and the stress of captivity on orcas on Kindle or can I buy it in book form to read, and did you find any other books that regard the treatment of orcas, dolphins and beluga whales etc in captivity as I really do enjoy reading about what affects it has on these animals, plus what goes on behind the shutters that is kept from the public, like the huge tearing of one of the orcas dorsal fins not so long ago that SW tried to hide with a photograph taken of the fin from a more frontal view so it didn't look bad at all, but when you actually saw the photograph leaked that is on the Voice of the Orcas page, it was a huge tear through the base of her fin and it must be excruciating for her to be left like that, no closed up nothing. It really shocked me and I actually fear she could get an infection or tear it even more and actually lose her fin which would end up with her demise for sure. Look forward to hearing from you Dee.

This was a really good interview. I wish there was MORE of a dialogue going on about how to we move forward with the whales that are currently in captivity. I've wondered, since seeing Blackfish & a lot of the Q & A's and I am reading Death at Seaworld right now... most of the aquariums are located near coasts ... maybe it would make more sense to build the sea pens in a cove along those coasts, and have buses taking park guests for an hour or two to go see the whales in the pens, allow them to be there for feeding, or build a "viewing area" so that guests could go watch them hunting fish (ie at each feeding time, dump a load of live mixed fish for them to hunt IF they are hungry at that point -- it would give the orca a bit of a challenge in being able to hunt their food, AND a bit of a choice as to whether they are hungry at that time or if they wanted to leave it till later).
    Just my 2¢

It just seems so ridiculous. With all the overwhelming evidence to the contrary, there are those who insist that these animals are happy and healthy. Are they just refusing to acknowledge the abuse they inflict, or are they in such denial that they can't even see it? This needs to change. Thank you for your tireless effort- on behalf of those who support it, thank you to the entire Blackfish team. Standing up is a difficult thing. Jeffrey, can I ask, what is your personal opinion on the ideal future for Tilikum? Could he be released into a sea pen? If so, is this a realistic option (financially, etc). And if not, must be be put down?

I ignorantly bought the ticket to SeaWorld in late 2009. I saw the shows in almost all of the different areas including the Orcas, dolphins and walruses. We went into where the sole Polar Bear was and that’s when I got my eyes opened. That poor bear pretty much told me how it was to be in captivity. He jumped into the water, swam to the other end of the pool, got out, walked the length of the pool and jumped back in the same spot he had before. It was a continuous circle. He jumped in, swam, jumped out, walked to the exact same spot and jumped back in - over and over and over and over and over and over and OVER ! Boredom was an understatement. That poor thing was stir crazy. He is the one who “told” me that captivity of any wild animal is just TOTALLY wrong ! Blackfish came out afterwards and absolutely and totally confirmed what I already knew.
Kudos to these people for speaking out. Now I wonder how these people are doing. I sure hope that the whole effort doesn’t go by the wayside and go totally forgotten and places like SeaWorld pick up where they left off. These animals are NOT happy.
What has me concerned about reintroducing them to the wild is the bacterial infections and other diseases they’ve acquired in captivity could be passed onto their counterparts in the wild. I watched a UA-cam about swimming with dolphins. Their habitats are anything but clean. The animals suffer from bacterial infections, etc and DO INDEED pass it on to humans who happen to have a tiny open scratch. Rather concerns me about the reintroduction thing but maybe I’m ignorant on this too. I’d like to hear further about it from an expert.

To live knowing it is going on, and as profit and entertainment, blurs one's paradigm of right and wrong and the value of life and morals. It takes away the concept that life is fair and that normal people are safe to be around. It just bastardizes reality and is a sickness pervading America

@@sarahhaaniaxoxo I’m not eligible to speak for the whales. I don’t know if they like it, don’t like it but don’t hate it, or hate it there. It’s really hard to know if the ones originally from the wild like it there or not but when it comes to the ones born there they don’t know anything else to them that is the ocean that is their life and they have adapted to it they were born there and that’s all they know. So if we were to bring a Captive born animal into the wild that would be just as abusive as taking a wild born animal out of the wild so when it comes to freeing the whales it’s sensitive because you can’t take the captive born ones and you could potentially take the wild born ones so if you just took the wild born ones back and not the captive borns then the captive born ones would miss the wild ones very much like Amaya if you took Ulises from Amaya Ulises and Amaya would become very sad and stressed so yeah that’s basically how I see it.
