  • Miami Beach Audemars Piguet Watch Repair. The In-House Swiss-Trained Watchmaking team at Gray & Sons Jewelers repaired this $250,000 Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph back to its factory original condition. The owner of this Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph had worn it into a jacuzzi and the watch had been accumulating rust for two weeks before it was brought to Gray & Sons for full repair.
    www.grayandsons.com/repairs
Audemars Piguet quoted $120,000 and an entire year to repair this Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph. Gray & Sons completed the same repair in two months for a fraction of the price.
SPECIAL NOTE: After examining the design of this particular Royal Oak model, Gray & Sons recommends for Royal Oak Tourbillon Chronograph owners to not plunge this watch into water. The water-resistance is not guaranteed due to a complication with the gasket system.
Gray & Sons Jewelers is the most respected independent Watch Repair and Service Center in South Florida. Serving local and international clients since 1980. We repair fine Swiss mechanical watches and have six Swiss-trained Master Watchmakers and Jewelers with over 150 years combined experience to perform all watch repair services- including:

    National Repairs
To accommodate customers across the United States who complete repairs with us, we devised the Easy Ship Box as the fastest and most convenient way to send sensitive luxury items.
Every one of the Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier, Omega, Breitling, and Audemars Piguet watches that we take in are meticulously restored to perfection by our watch specialists, to ensure years of faithful service with normal care and maintenance.
First, each watch goes through our rigorous 86-step inspection and restoration process. We are so confident in the quality of the timepieces we service that we proudly offer our exclusive 12 month warranty on all watches and a 24 month warranty on all Rolex watches.
After being fully restored, all watch cases and bracelets are finely polished to remove any surface scratches and to restore each piece to its original luster. When a watch leaves Gray & Sons (whether the watch is 5, 10, 20 or even 50 years old) it is in pristine condition.

Judging by the comments, some people don't understand this repair was done as a trade-off to restore a grail watch to a working condition, instead of just letting it be a total loss. AP quotes $120K(read description), and that's probably accurate judging by the damage to the movement, bracelet, and dial. If you check chrono24, there is one identical model with an asking price of $192.5K. Meaning that AP wanted 62% of the price of the watch just to repair it. Even after AP's repair the watch wouldn't even be worth close to MSRP. So this is just an economical choice.

+sultanabran1 Do You know how much AP wanted for such restoration?
I'll tell you - about 1/3 of this watch value.
When I dropped my Zenith on the carpet and the dial screws broke up (dial just turned a little bit) I had to pay for the repair 2500k dollars (Zenith servie), and I had to send it back, because it wasn't done perfectly. Dial moved during winding with crown. Now I feel bad about this, I could send it to a skilled watchmaker, and for two hundret bucks it'd be done perfectly for the first time.

Michał 77 price is no argument when talking about AP or other watches of such value. if price is an issue, go buy a seiko.

Michał Dębicki i don't understand your thinking. if you love watches such as AP, then you'd appreciate the love the watch makers put into making them. which is also why they cost so much. to get some hack to service or repair an AP, goes against the very reason you love an AP timepiece.

    • @michadebicki6534
      @michadebicki6534 8 років тому +5

sultanabran1 I do understand what you have in mind. I'm just not blind and bot able to justify every company's service price. I own several new watches like Zenith, Omega and I wasn't satified with their service. Very expensive and not done well. (I had my Zenith back with a serious defect).
(Omega returned with dirt on the dial) IF this service would be done perfectly - I wouldn't have had any objections. As you said before price is not the most important factor. To be honest I'm more into vintage watches, they were made without computer technologies and with much more care for the quality. And I respect more AHCI watches, which are done really by watchmakers-artists. I like brands like AP, PP, ALS, Breguet, but they are not as good as they were before.

I am nothing short of impressed by what Gray and Sons was able to accomplish on this restoration.. just beautiful!!! And in such a short time... here’s my thing now.. what will A.P say if a future owner take the watch in for a grand servicing and they discover all this amazing Gray and Sons third party work done to their product??? Would that deem the watch void of direct A.P servicing... i am honestly amazed at the restoration but for me, it was going back to A.P for as long as they said and how much ever they charge.

What are you critics complaining about?! Did any of YOU get the REPAIR BILL for restoring this watch????
....I can only imagine how bad the owner of this watch must have felt when it got wet inside- and I'll bet that the owner of this watch really winced when they had to fork over the cost of these repairs!
All things considered, I think it is just as well that this watch was NOT sent back to Audemars Piguet...the people there would have probably FAINTED at the condition of this watch- and I think that the time and efforts of the Audemars Piguet craftsmen is of far better use manufacturing new watches rather than trying to restore a mess like THIS!!!
As for the work done by the Gray and Sons craftsmen- I would like to think that the people at Audemars Piguet would APPROVE of the care and effort contributed by Gray and Sons toward restoring this masterpiece.

PhantomMigKiller How do you get into the 'watch craft trade,' or whatever the correct terminology is? (Watchmaker, Specialist?) I'm not just talking Swiss watches, I mean decent timepieces in general. What types of recognised training qualifications would watchmakers have and how long would they work on this type of apprenticeship? Sorry for all of the questions. I will obviously carry out my own research on the internet etc, but it's always good to hear from others! Thanks in advance for any input.
p.s. check out Grand Seiko for impressive pieces if you haven't!

    • @PhantomMigKiller
      @PhantomMigKiller 9 років тому

ph1lo I'm sad to say that watch and clock repair seem to be a vanishing art. At one time there were quite a few schools that taught this particular trade- that is no longer true today.
Once quartz timepieces became widely available, it was all downhill for wind-up watches.

PhantomMigKiller it's a good solid enough watch. There's no danger in wearing it. I mean like how often do u damage a watches?? They aren't really prone to damage. The only reason I wouldn't wear this is because I would look stupid as a 25 year old wee white boy wearing a big gold watch. But if I had it right now then I'd wear it all day and night, I'd never take it off. And I wouldn't care if I looked stupid. So feel free to buy me one people!

Could you afford the upkeep or the insurance or the repairs on either of these cars? I know I could not- heck, I probably could not even afford a new set of tires for that kind of car.
Similarly, all mechanical watches need to be maintained- they need to be cleaned and oiled and inspected at regular intervals, and worn out parts need to be replaced. There are very few places that can service such high-end watches as this, and it would cost like h*ll. No, owning a watch like that, is way beyond the means of people like us.

More like eight or nine times that. It'll cost you $700 to service a three handed Rolex, which is nothing compared to an AP tourbillon.

    Felix Pinto,
The major Swiss watch brands are produced in production factories. The watches are made by production personnel, not watchmakers. When you look at the staggering output of watches produced by these factories (Rolex 1,000,000 watches/year, Petit Philippe 45,000 watches/year Audemars Piquet 26,000 watches/year etc.) one will have to realize that there aren't a lot of actual watchmakers who are employed by watch factories. Roger Smith, on the other hand, produces watches using actual watchmakers and turns out about 10 watches/year. If a Roger Smith watch gets sent back to his factory it will be serviced by an experienced watchmaker. The large factories aren't set up for repair and restoration, they are set up for production manufacturing. A watch sent back to them is going to be serviced by part replacers. You will get much better results sending your watch to restoration and repair specialists like the ones in this video.

    Mark Job,
The reason you "don't understand" Is because you do not know what you are talking about. Do you know anything about watch movements, watch parts, how they are made and how they are assembled? Do you know how to design a watch gear train, how to make a pinion, a gear, a staff, a pivot, watch stem case pilor plate etc. Do you know how an escapement works? The master craftsmen in this video do. Which person in the Audemars Piquet factory do you have in mind who knows more about watch restoration then the technicians at Gray & Sons? Which part in this watch restoration video do you feel was out of tolerance? Which repair technique did you observe that was incorrect? Your comments are nothing more than ignorant concepts that imply Audemars Piquet has the only people on the planet who know how to restore a watch. You should learn something about watches before making negative comments about those who do know.

*Gray & Sons did a wonderful repair, but this watch should have been returned to the original manufacturer. It's the same with A Vacheron Constantin, or A Patak-Philippe timepiece, as these are, frankly, extremely high level watches. Many of these calibres of timepieces can only be properly repaired by being returned to the manufacturer who can return them to spec by those same in house watchmakers who probably built the watch in the first place (depending on how old it is, of course). A year to restore the watch by Audemars-Piquet sounds about right, since this is the time it takes to build a new one from scratch. A watch this destroyed needs to be mostly re-manufactured. Who better than the original manufacturer themselves can do this kind of job ? Put another way, as good as Gray and Sons is, and they are very high end quality watchmakers themselves, their repair will not be superior to the original house of manufacture - Especially with Tier 2 and Tier 1 level timepieces.*

A watch of this expense should never have been treated so porely in the first place.
Only way it managed to get in that condition is through poor ownership. I own a brietling Bentley myself and I wouldn't even let it get anywhere near this condition and it's only around 1/40 of the value of this watch. The owner is a fool.

Watch this video carefully. C-clamp holding a hand held grinder down on a workbench to work case screws? What happened to the lathe? Setting the second hand with a stick? Wearing finger cots on just one hand? That special screwdriver was cringe inspiring. This watch will never regain substantial value now that it's been handled this way. As for Audemars Piguet, $120K for a few replacement parts and a thorough clean, polish and tuning is beyond excessive. Their refurb probably wouldn't be all that impressive, either. The owner of this type of watch would be beyond rich for these kinds of prices to make sense, or fail to grasp what a horrible value/trade-off this example is.

With all due respect, I cannot accept the premise that your company knows more, or has a superior service to the original Swiss manufacturer Audemars - Piguet. There's a very good reason why the original manufacturer said one year for a *watch restoration* and not two months !!! Therefore, I must conclude your servicing of the $250,000.00 US to be inferior to the original manufacturer.

My take on this, was they claimed to do acceptable work for less time. I don't think that means they did a better job than the swiss watchmaker. I have seen the detailed work they do in a videos at swiss factories, so I suspect it's possible Gray didn't do as good of a job.

A fucking $250K tourbillon and the gaskets failed? If AP had any sense of pride and shame, they should fix that watch for free! I love the look of the AP Royal Oak Offshore but am thinking twice in pulling the trigger on this brand after watching this video. Seems as though their prices are artificially high due to their limited production. For now, I will stick to the ROLEX! I do have to say that this watch’s value was totally destroyed before and after the repair.
