- Ever thought to yourself, “If I were to start a watch brand, I’d make the best watch for a really good price and it would have tourbillons and everything.” Yeah, me too. How’s yours coming along? I gave up on my idea after a quarter-minute and played Dark Souls instead. Not Horage, though. They were just about crazy enough to go through with it.

For a skeleton tourbillon, an AP with a simmilar movement will set you back 130 retail and then 200-400 resale, or a Jacob will set you back 400
8k ain't cheap, but given it's a tourbillion, it definitely is.

Considering a lot of swiss made luxury watches are investments since they generally hold their value (not counting inflation) the price of a watch can some times be irrelevant if you have enough disposable income. 8.000 CHF isn't a bad price for a watch enthusiast wanting to own one of the most coveted types of complications in the industry.
Yup, don't care if it's a Tourbillon or a Tourantula... If this is supposed to be a humbling story it's far from it at over 1/3 my annual salary!

I've been obsessed with the Tourbillon for a long time now. It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in a watch. It's good to see that even today, over 200 years after its invention, it's still captivating the attention of people.
To be honest though it is quite a pretty watch as well. Plus good on them for steping out and making their own watch.

@@grantflippin7808 recently I watched some very interesting documentary about brutalist architecture in Berlin. I knew some of the buildings from my school trips to Berlin. At that time I did not understand much and thought it is ugly. Today some 25 years later I start to understand a lot more about that architectural direction. Probably we are still far away yet from this style 😉

You see the fact that a husband and wife duo can produce this watch and put it on the market for 8k.......you gota wonder what the mark-up on the big brands is! Scary stuff.
Just wait til you order a replacement strap from the big brands.
To be fair. It is my opinion that, the top 5 most desirable watches have little to do with their brands in regards to price, it is the market and buyers that are feeding this ridiculous mark-up carousel. And frankly, the carousel only affect those that can't afford the watches. The ultra wealthy are not particularly affect. In fact, it could be argued that this system keeps the circle tight and easier for them to enjoy the most revered watches.
@@RexofCaledonia I agree with you to a certain extent. It’s true the brands don’t set the prices but they do have a lot more control of whether they go up and down than endometrial else. They set the production amount. And they keep the prices high by intentionally limiting the amount of watches they produce each year. The only reason you have to get on a waiting list for a Rolex that hasn’t had any major changes in years is because they want it that way. They could easily increase the production on their oldest most popular models. But they don’t won’t to saturate the market and bring their value down

@@RexofCaledonia Yes indeed it does not affect the wealthiest. Luckily those people spend their money still on expensive stuff. Perhaps we should look at this phenomenon as something like redistribution of wealth without major government and tax involvement. 😉 For the ones who take enough time they will find a lot of very good watches out there. It is the group dynamics which is the problem, because it is more easy to follow what others believe is good and it is much harder to get down the rabbit hole and identify an unknown product or brand with much less reference as being perhaps equally as good in design and technicality. That's the art.
This is IT! I've been mostly focused on vintage watches, as they are sometimes still somewhat affordable, and attainable, and there is value in vintage which is missing in modern watches; scarcity, and style. My goal has been to get a Rolex, either an Explorer or Oysterquartz, but for the money, THIS just makes more sense on so many levels. It's not "mass produced", the finishing is really world class, and the tourbillon takes it to a level unseen anywhere else in the market. Congrats!!!
Holy shit!!! They’ve done it. The breath of fresh air this industry has been dying for. Modularity, customizable, beautiful, industrious, efficient and effective. This will not only sell its ass off but will likely propel Horage into the upper ionosphere of major watch manufacturers in the sales arena. We need this watch just as much and likely a lot more than we need A. Lange Söhne watches. Both fulfilling the two greatest consumer needs

Thankfully style is not simply dictated by money so my children win awards at school for being the best dressed and although I do get to take a second every few minutes to admire the complexity, beauty, and craftsmanship of an automatic watch, I’m a long way off from the fine skilled hands of Switzerland. Had no idea this existed before this video. Thank you Watchfinder for giving us a glimpse into this great story. Love the watch, striking and modern. The chamfered square grid dial design is very telling of its modern CAD heritage and I absolutely love that.
Its not easy to make something which is unlike something else without getting odd. I think we found a very good balance here and everybody is very happy. When you wear it on a daily basis this design never gets boring, but it is also not intrusive. Team did a very good job.

A truly inspirational story of modern horology! Wish the internal framework had more elegant curved shapes, all of those gears kind of look imprisoned. One huge advantage to major brands is that it is easy (ok, maybe not easy) to get your watch looked at and sent for repair, using OEM parts. If you own a Ming or this brand and you live in Iowa and you want it fixed, good luck, because they will have a very small factory and an even smaller section dedicated to repairs.
AND, older brands like Patek, Rolex, Omega, etc. have made their movements sturdier over the years so they are far more reliable than in the past. Newer indies may not produce such robust watches out of the gate.
Both small and big brands have their advantages, however there are still small brands like us and a few others that are invested in going above and beyond to provide the level of service and reliability of the major brands you mention. The exception is not the rule, we wish it were however being the exception is incredibly challenging and the reason most simply would play Dark Souls as Watchfinder said in their video.
As it pertains to most smaller brands and even to some medium to larger sized brands most outsource their product development and rely primarily on third party movement and agencies to bring their creation to light, this also goes with their service. In fact many do not even have the product enter their office or country where they are located, most are simply shipped factory direct. This is because the barrier to entry is extremely high and access to the minds and suppliers to help them achieve this are for the most part in Switzerland. A brand that is located elsewhere in the world reliant on an agency and movement supplier in Switzerland is much more at risk of underserving their customer base.
Horage is in an interesting position in that we have our own engineering and watchmaking team and we have been engineering movements since 2008 with what we feel are some of the most talented minds with a deep understanding of industrial process management. Our location is in Biel/Bienne which is the same home of two of the brands you mention Rolex and Omega, they are both about 1 kilometre either side of us. Us like them rely on close partners within our town and surrounding area to bring our movements to life. In fact all parts aside from our silicon escapement that we engineer, but produce in Germany come from within a 35km radius of our town, even the big guys have to buy their silicon parts and try to snap up suppliers whenever possible.
For 20 years now we have provided some of the biggest in the Swiss watch industry parts and project management to ensure their projects come to light. We have learned a lot about the pains of a big brand and also realized the disconnection most have from design to production and most importantly from brand to consumer.
Sturdiness of movements is something you mention and this comes from time and industrialization processes like the brands have done which you mention. We too have been invested in industrializing manufacture processes to ensure quality product and service at all costs. Our engineers are watchmakers and that means the very person developing our movements is also de-risking them heavily over years of prototyping. Additionally when it comes to service those same persons are the ones servicing the watches which provides an even higher level of service than the big brands could offer. By being smaller we have many advantages as we can be far more agile and have a direct line between customer service and the very engineer that developed the movement. Customers are provided with a much more transparent inquiry, sales and service process then they would experience from the big groups.
The world has changed a lot especially within the last year. Digital communication has helped expedite process for those that embrace them and bring their customers along for the ride. After all the customer is the only one that keeps a brands lights on, all others in a brands network rely on a brand to go above and beyond for their customer.
We communicate very openly with our customer base and unlike many of the larger brands we have implemented live calls from our production and invite our customers in on calls to see just what might be going. If a watch requires service we have a few locations in the world now, however to ensure we provide the best we prefer that watches come to our facility in Biel, to do so we arrange courier pickup from the customers location and it ships directly to us, after service it is shipped via courier back. We have had very positive feedback on this and this is because our customer service is closing tied to production and watchmakers.
There is a reason most are just discovering us now and that is because when most brands start budgets are allocated to marketing. We have had many ask us to spend more on marketing, but if we did that we would have to take resources from engineering, watchmaking, and ultimately de-risking of our production. Rather than do the hard stuff first the easiest, shortest and less costly road is to outsource and double down on marketing. This is completely ok, because after all watches are a hobby and the vast differences in this industry keep the fascination of our mechanical world alive, but at some point there should be a point smaller brands start thinking like a bigger brand and investing in their own infrastructure and IP to ensure they can provide long term support to their community. Most unfortunately over spend on marketing and continue to leave the innovation to 3rd parties.
Our approach and why most are only discovering us more recently has been again due to our determination to focus on the hard stuff first. A deep understanding in industrial processes has helped us to ensure a stable movement supply, IP security and security in movement supply as an independent. By doing this we can come to market with a sound product, sound service and be able to stand on our own amongst the best of them.

It is beautiful. I like the submariner though.. However this watch has a nice skeleton look.. That square hatch design is great. A second hand for me would be good...also an auto winding feature is missing.. You get the tourbillon though........ Hmmm tough decision.

Beautiful watch. Just wondering, do all silicon escapement components eventually tend to appear as if chipped? 3:17
I thought the point was to have greater strength and durability.
In case you mean the tips of the anchor wheel having different color…, I would assume this comes from the oil. At another section you can see a little break out section. This should be the place where the wheel is held in the wafer and after breaking out it will form this shape. Silicon has very good tensile strength and is not so good on the compression stress side of things. This is why we had to come up with some special mounting solution to take out the compression strength from the part. We have broken a lot of parts in the past 12 years, but least of them were the ones made of silicon.
@@andifelsl it may be oil but if you look at 3:18 full screen HD going frame by frame (on the keyboard . to go forward and , backward) it appears as if it were chipped paint/enamel on the escape wheel teeth where they meet the anchor, but maybe it's the lighting, I don't know. I am not in the least qualified to analyse something like this, but after so many macro shots of movements I was surprised by this one on this beautiful watch.
@@mesteme hard to say to be honest. Since they are samples, perhaps some stuff might have been sneaked in. I am pretty sure we have very few chipping problems. We did a lot of REM analysis and have very good results with this material.

Now, why would you put a pointer on the tourbillon but neglect to put second hash marks on the dial?? Also, I didn’t see any jewels on the pallet in the escapement. They have to be there. Right??
Guess they tested its not needed due to the silicone material used for the escapement and pallet fork
We need the pointer to pass COSC. Because COSC is measuring visually and we need to have an indication for that.

Somehow I want one so bad right now! This watch is a game changer! Just a suggestion, it would be nice to see a closed dial version and the Tourbillon as the star of the show. I think the open dial takes away from the It. But I still like it. Phenomenal work!

If I had $10k to put towards a watch it'd either be a White Birch, Blue Santos or this. The story alone is worth half the price. Whilst the other two are established pieces of beauty, refinement, history and innovation in it's own way, this Horage would feel unmistakable special, and from a collectors stand point, is the kind of watch that 20-30 years from now could be seen as a Proto work of a great house or movement.

Don't think the big players are worried at all. In this game, top players know brand/status is everything and clients want to pay alot for the image/status.
Tag and 15k wouldn't even be considered by those looking at Breguet,ALS, AP, for the sheer fact it doesn't cost enough....look at the success of RM following this strategy..overpriced mediocre pos In reality but its owners are interested in flexing "cost" above all
@@cy4624 The big players may not have been ‘worried’ about the Tag Heuer and may not be ‘worried’ now but they let their feelings be known and slammed Tag Heuer for producing and selling such a ‘cheap’ tourbillion watch saying that it could seriously affect the Swiss watch industry🤷🏻♂️
As a member of the big players club, I would laugh and pity anyone who wears this.

@@biohayzer because for that money you can buy a decent watch that is not trying to be what its not.
A good example is a true super car like a Ferrari and someone wasting money on a lookalike car thinking he can compete with Ferrari owners at a car show. Everyone can understand that when it comes to cars the same goes with watches.
You cannot compete or compare your Chinese tourbillion or a budget Swiss tourbillion with works of art like Patek, JLC, Lange, FP Journe, Vacheron or AP. I like RM but disregarding the hype, even they cannot compete with the apex watches of those brands that I mentioned.
Of what material is the escapement wheel made? Is it blue Steel or just painted blue?
There is “Silicon” escapement.
