    Ever since I was about 8 years old I have always had an unusual fascination with the mechanical watch. I have always considered them pieces of art. Even the most inexpensive models . Most people just don't understand what an incredible feat of mechanical engineering they are . I could sit and stare at the movement for hours. There is nothing more relaxing than listening to the tick , tick . tick .

      An incredible feat of engineering they were, ESPECIALLY the inexpensive ones. Engineering is all about optimizing performance AND cost. Today mechanical movements may make sense financially, aesthetically or as fashon items, but they don't make sense anymore from an engineering point of view.

    On a pure asthetic level, I would only pay big bucks for the Reverso. I'll take my IWC 853, with a completely faded dial over these current watches. I found my watch in the cheap watch bin at the thrift store. I wound it, and it was too smooth for a ETA movement, or any cheap watch. It kept perfect time? I kept it sit on my nightstand a year. On boring night, I noticed a fish on the crown. "Why would Timex put a logo on a crown?" I opened the SnapBack case.(they are incredibly tight. Don't use a regular watch back knife. Use the tool that looks like a chisel to open the back, and the case. Be careful.)
    To my surprise, a beautiful IWC 1955's movement shone back at me. Well that started my obsession with horology.
    Watch repairing is not that difficult. Look for an old, complete watch online, and put it to life. It's a good feeling, and won't cost you a house.
    Oh yea, as to huge watches. It's a fad. Its not wrist size. My IWC is 36mm and looks, and feels fine. I wouldn't want it bigger, or smaller. I'm nice you get into this hobby/profession your tastes will change. You will also see through the BS. Over three hundred grand for that Chinese looking watch?
    I will be putting together watch repair videos, and hopefully a watch repair book. A modern book.

    The reason why many of these precision watches cost several hundred thousand Euro is not only because they require time to create in a precision manner... They are expensive in fiat currency like Euro & dollars because those fiat currencies are worthless by comparison to the quality of the labor & parts that go into them - but in comparison to the value of real currency such as silver or gold, they are not super expensive but only relatively so - despite the fact that these real currencies (precious metals) are manipulated downward by central banks & fiat currency investors in their market value.

    I can never figure out what I think is the most interesting aspects of watches. If I think it's about accuracy, I can applaud a watch that syncs to GPS or the atomic clock in Fort Collins; because it's hard to beat a watch that can sync itself daily to very accurate reference clocks. But the high tech approach is a bit boring, because the accuracy is external. I am more impressed by the Spring drive - a movement that is an interest hybrid between an automatic ( self winding mechanical) and a quartz watch. Or maybe a high beat quartz watch with thermal compensation that's accurate to a few seconds a year. Going another direction, we have insanely complicated mechanical watch complications, which are a wonder to behold; the amount of moving parts in a perpetual repeater is mind boggling. But outside of the spring drive, mechanical watches are not very good timekeepers.

Any advice or uploads you may have or provide post purchasing a timepiece? The insiders guide to know how of maintenance or repair to trusted repair companies (not dealership) or how to research them. Do it yourself scratch removals or polishing techniques, watch repair and tool kits the brands used. Purchasing quality interchangeable bracelets, rubber straps, and alligator leather. If the watchmakers makes his own screws, and he usually does, he also makes his own screwdrivers. Most watchmakers/factories make their own tools because they do not use standard size screws. They make whatever they need, in house, every component of the watch and most tools to make them with. That is one of the reasons why quality watches are so expensive.

People like me that sell parts to fix watches. But yeah, keep cringing.

But then again if you can't impress on a $5,000 Roland accordion or a $70,000 Steinway or Yamaha grand, then you won't impress with a Pigini or a Fazioli. And then I guess if you can't impress with anything at all, then you buy LV luggage and Swiss mechanical watch :)

    I need to clear this up......Are the people at the tables with the white gowns just assembling and grooming the watches??? Or did they design and engineer the time pieces themselves???? Are there separate mechanical engineers in the production process???? And I hope these people have HIGH salaries, considering the astronomical prices of these watches. Or is it only the executives????

    • @jamesbizs
      @jamesbizs 7 років тому

      They were workers. Nothing more. Machines with hands. And no their salaries aren't high. It takes that one woman a week to polish that tiny little part. THAT is why these watches cost a lot. Think about it. That one part , for just that one persons time, is worth about $1000 in labor alone. Not counting tools, machines that made it, electricity, rent, the engineers and designers that created it. The cost that went into training these people, that had to start from nothing. Just for ONE TINY LITTLE PART. You can train just about anyone with a steady hand to do these mindless repetitive tasks. So no, they do not deserve high salaries.

    • @ArthurD
      @ArthurD 7 років тому +1

      In age of manipulating atoms with magnetic fields, these "classic" (they're just lagging behind) watchmakers are using manual labor to do one specific job at a time just by one person. And they're not even paying much to these people, who work to satisfy lust for luxury of oil and gold tycoons.
      Last time this bullshit existed, Great October Revolution happened.

    • @jamesbizs
      @jamesbizs 7 років тому

      +Arþur “Tataarujin” D you can say that about pretty much every employee. Envy is not a good color for you. Those oil tycoons, help feed a lot of people when they buy a watch. Many different industries get paid, to produce a final product. But people like you would rather us go back to the barter system. Unless you have a better solution, then shut your freaken trap.

    • @ArthurD
      @ArthurD 7 років тому +1

      james pogrebetsky
      >Unless you have a better solution
      I actually have. There are a fuckton of starving people in the world. What people in watchmaking companies make for day, these starving people won't make in year.
      So, take starving people, teach them to polish gears, cut ornaments or whatever the hell people are doing and pay them half as much as to those well-fed people. Et voila! Less starving people, more watches, less price. Win-win-win.
      And don't start to feed me "muh exclusivity" crap. Watches made by well-fed and newly hired ex-starving people are indistinguishable if their skills are equal.

    • @jamesbizs
      @jamesbizs 7 років тому

      +Arþur “Tataarujin” D yeah. That worked awesome with china... NOT. your idea of helping people, is to bring people up, at the expense of bringing others down. That is disgusting. If you're so business savvy, then start your own business, and do that yourself. You have no right to tell businesses how they should run their business. Hasn't worked in a single damn country that has tried it. The second china started prospering, was the same second that they allowed for the idea of private companies. Government oversight of companies, NEVER works. And the only way to get your idea to work, is with government oversight. If companies could hire cheap labor, they would, and they do. But as someone that has to deal with outsourced call centers every day, it is awful. They might be cheaper, but at the expense of quality. So no, you don't have a better solution. You have an better idea. Communism is also a better idea. But it certainly isn't a better solution

    In my opinion, if a high-end exclusive watch is made by one person, this person should either keep this watch, or get the retail price for it. For instance, one craftsman (-woman) should get the $350,000 for the Lange & Sohne she made, or should keep the watch for herself. I think it's fair, no? Anybody challenge my view?

      I think a lot of sense. The lady gets the money for what the watch retails. Then she can tip her manager $1,000. That's plenty for just standing and bossing around and doing nothing. Another $1,000 tip for office cleaning lady who actually does something. The rest of the retail money goes to the lady who makes the watch. I think it's fair. Or she can just keep the watch since she made it herself.

    • @kenglaze2174
      @kenglaze2174 8 років тому +5

      No, that doesn't make sense. There is a lot more to a watch company than a watchmaker, a manager and a cleaning lady. There are also people who obtain materials, and make the parts. And there is upkeep and utilities that need to be paid to keep the lights on and the rooms warm. And people who sell the watches. All of this needs to be managed by someone, or else the watchmaker won't have enough time left in the day to make watches.

    • @dvamateur
      @dvamateur 8 років тому

      Ken Glaze Yeah, and all those people who make nothing cash in the 95% pure profit. Watch maker gets 5% which I believe it's crazy, because the watch maker is the person who actually makes something.

    • @XaticBeats
      @XaticBeats 8 років тому +7

      +Andrew Piatek That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Why? because if any of those watchmakers went out independently and made their own watches, most wouldn't succeed, regardless of quality, unfortunately, even if they are great. I personally believe that brands are invaluable, and a lot of people pay much more for brands and also have a lot of biases towards such things.
      you're saying the guy who created the company that brought everything together and executed his vision (which is undoubtedly more work than the watchmakers) doesn't deserve any money?
      I don't get it, but I'm assuming by your reasoning that you believe steve job's net worth belongs to china since he sourced everything from there, right..?
