There's a trope for that kind of spellcasting it's called "Full Contact Magic" it's very hard to animate, due to how fluid it is. But like you included, everyone loves it because it is far more lively and exciting than the static spellcasting you typically see in the media that has magic. Another media that has Full Contact Magic is Bayonetta for video game examples.

She does use wind, to cushion their fall into the machinery when they find Alucard!
And tbh Sypha is very direct about wanting to be with Trevor. There's nothing unconscious or selfish about it. Her agenda being... enjoying his company, having sex regularly, and trusting him to fight next to her? Buddy, that's a relationship! And her desires are very much not unconscious, she asks Trevor to come with her and explains her reasoning. That's honesty and vulnerability, not emotional subterfuge!

Late in season 1, sypha says, "Magic is just implementing your will into the world," something along those lines.
So, no, she doesn't have a limited mana pool, and the strength of her magic is based on her will. Green lantern rules. At least, that's how I interpreted it.
This is also why God hates magic users. Because your changing reality with your will

I also did wonder about her never seeming to run out of magic because generally when you make a character appear always powerful and to not have any vulnerabilities like that, it can make the character kinda boring. But then I did notice that when the trio goes and faces the vampire generals and soldiers, Sypha pullls off some impressive large scale attacks, but then when they face off with Dracula, her attacks are smaller. She doesn't run out of magic but she can get exhausted and i think that matches up pretty well with your interpretation.

To comment on your question "why didnt she use wind magic often"
In Castlevania 3 she only has access to fire, ice, and lighting magic. Even as a reanimated corpse as a boss for Alucard in sotn thats all she uses. The closest thing she has to wind abilities is a snow-storm like attack in sotn. This is further emphasized in Judgment when in combat with her mace-scepter and apell book, all her magic attacks ate fire, ice, and electric themed.
Because of the use of only these 3 elements its implied any mage who uses these spells, and nothing else, may be related to the Belnades clan in some way. Becauae these 3 elements are the Belnades Clans signature spells.

I think they left Grant out because he didn't have any connection to the story past Trevor finding him. Alucard was Dracula's son and saw everything Dracula was doing. Sypha fell in love and continued the Belmont blood line. What does Grant do after this?
I don't mind the changes they did to Sypha because, to me, it shows that they wanted her to be more than a background character since she is SO important to the Belmont Bloodline.
I think Trevor stuck with Sypha because it made him feel a little better and not so hopeless in the world he had to exist in. Then, after the judge he truly hurt for her loss of happiness and felt that he was the only one who could guide her through that pain

Grant was left out because the prospects of a Landlocked pirate seemed stupid to Warren Ellis. Even though Grant was a thief turned rebel and not a pirate. Grant was one of the rebels that fought back against Dracula when he first started attacking, even before Trevor got asked by the Pope to investigate what happened to Wallachia and why they had no more contact. Plus after Trevor used the Vampire Killer to kill Dracula, with Alucard going back to slumbering, Trevor and Sypha going off to adventure together before marrying, Grant was the only one out of all of them that actually actively traveled around and used the money that he stole from Dracula’s Castle to rebuild the destroyed Wallachia. Not only did he use it as a way to rebuild his home, but he also used the rebuilding as a way to distract himself from the fact that his best friend (Trevor) was marrying the woman he loved (Sypha).

@@DANTVSVERGIL The easiest way around Warren's issue would have been to have Grant be the captain who Dracula sailed back home with, blaming him for not arriving in time and cursing him like in the game. Though other than replacing the captain that sets Issac on his new path, there isn't much to do with him afterward and he probably would be a strain on an already packed cast. Not to mention harboring feelings for Sylpha would have made things awkward. With those two things in mind I can see why the writers were hestitant.

I really like this analysis of Sypha. You don't shy away from the challenges her characters faces as she develops, but also display her abilities. Personally I find that super heroins often stay as flat characters who aren't allowed to develop as much as the male counterparts. But Sypha absolutely does, and you described that perfectly with, "She has a tantrum." Which we have seen multiple male characters in the show do as well under stress.

I wasn't a fan of Sypha at first because I kinda fell into the trap of "oh, look. Another altruist that borders on stupidity with their good intentions". Then I saw that unlike the other Speakers, she would ACTUALLY come in handy in a fight (y'know, the thing Speakers allegedly don't do) and at least gained my respect. My respect just grew throughout season 2 and come season 3, she reminded me of a less annoying child in that while she was far from dumb, still hadn't really been exposed to humanity's ugliness till the Judge's big reveal. I also kinda felt vindicated for Trevor at that point with the "we're not living your life anymore. Now we're in mine" line being the icing on the cake. Season 4, I couldn't tell if I should be enjoying her turnaround or be sad over it but she felt a bit more mentally balanced to me than she had when I first saw her.

I think Alucard puts it best when he’s going through his “puppet-phase.” He mocks Sypha and pretty much calls her stuck-up as if she knows everything and her and her people are automatically better than everyone. Her being cocky in the third season is not only a natural progression because of killing Dracula, it’s a natural progression of her holier-than-thou attitude that she’s had from the jump.

Perhaps that's why she doesn't rely heavily on the use of wind power. Perhaps Sypha could use some lessons on Air Bending from Aang. I think it's interesting 🤔 that Sypha appears to be manipulating the elements in a similar manner as The Avatar. Instead of having different forms of martial arts that help benders control their elements, Sypha uses specific hand signs. I guess it's all about harnessing one's own chakras and focusing their energies in very specific ways.

Once again. A painfully well done stong female character. Who does not need to:
    1) dominate any situation
    2) humiliate anyone
    3) proclaim or identify her status as woman.
She is simply an individual. Her own story. Her own stenghts and weaknesses, her own struggles and growth.
    Wow. My word.
Its almost like people dont care what gender, sex, or circumstances you come from as a hero. Its almost like the choices you make, and seeing the journey you go on, are more interesting and compelling than your identity. Almost like heroes are timeless and interchangable mechanisms of the human condition. Oh my, could it be that the reason this series is popular is not just because it looks good, but also because its characters behave as humans and go on a journey of aspiration, loss, risk and reward? With conviction? Morals? Growth? Cant be...
Honesty though, solid work, bro. Keep it up. Well done.

I felt like Sypha did not get deconstructed or criticized enough. Thus giving ammo to the Mary Sue cry foul argument. Although she is initially rescued by Trevor and does take her licks throughout seasons 2 through 4 she was too high on herself. Season 4 was not so much Trevor putting her in her place but checking her. You'll notice that he is the one giving her history lessons about Death, weapons and the people who obtain them. At the end of the story Trevor falls into her arms mirroring their first time meeting each other and he gets one final dig on her causing her to drop him showing that they still both need to do some maturing. We can assume that she and her companions in arms will go on to be the town's leaders protectors and educators.

The reason that Grant was not include in the show is that Warren Ellies did not like the character, he comments "why is a pirate in landlocked country." Since this show was original going to be a movie, Warren Ellies did not see the point of including Grant cause he was focusing and developing the many characters in the story like Lisa, Dracula, the bishop, and the main characters. He felt that by adding Grant, he would not be able to focus on the other characters.
Though I can understand his criticism on Grant since he was not a really interesting character in games and is commonly forgotten in the games, I felt he missed an opportunity to create a much more interesting character than an average pirate.

Agreed, this was an opportune chance for him to show his range in writing and storytelling. The same way he did with Issac, Sypha and Saint Germain.

Ya could've changed grant into a bandit of sorts, a man who survived the initial attack from Dracula. Maybe he couldn't save his family and had to go on alone. He could've met the gang by at first trying to rob them, only to realize their strength and then joins them to either get revenge or die trying.

      Bro she’s a Mary sue
needed to be rescued by trevor because she was petrified, only just to call him rude with no appreciation. She's later seen conjuring lightning bolts with no explanation, she then saws about 3 enemies into pieces during the confrontation with Sala, she can seemingly fly, she can burn down entire buildings. All of this would be fine if it had been explained. She’s not even that powerful in the game, which the writer admitted that he have not played the game. But He did a great job for what it is worth but still, if she was that overpowered then why was she petrified in the first place? Because she didn't have those powers then? You could argue it was implied she learned new tricks during her travels with Trevor but again, this just boils down to bad writing which brings me to my original point. None of it is explained or explained well. Character development should never be implied.
The only time her character faced any flaw that could deter her from being called a mary sue was being petrified which lasted for around 3 minutes in total.
"I feel like y’all call any woman who’s powerful a mary sue."
Like What about Carmilla? The council of sisters? All of which are extremely powerful yet have a plethora of weaknesses from being vampires. I still like their characters despite some of their flaws.
None of this has anything to do with the fact that shes a woman. Nobody has made that point here, so don't misconstrue what I'm saying because it's convenient for you to form a strawman argument.

In another words, the show haxed Sypha down from being a goetic witch who conjures and pactise with elemental spirits and demons alike, to be simply an arcane alchemist-warrior enchantress with psionic/magic based elemental powers and abilities, in order to emphasize the science fiction elements of the Netflix show while removing one of the protagonistic characters from being subjected to harsh religious criticisims about the glorification of so-called Satanic and other noxious Pagan practises by Western television and cinema?

10:43 my only complaint about this is that they never brought her back to the city she leveled half of to witness the aftermath and have her face what she did and be humbled and and be forced to grapple with "with great power comes great responsibility". for the rest of the show i was waiting for it to finally happen to evolve her character arc but they just never brought it up again.

@@samreddig8819 i mean, she did some substantial damage. multiple neighborhoods obliterated. and yes, it wasn't premeditated or intended, but she saw it was in a large city through the mirror. it's not about "you should have known better" or "it's all your fault", more like manslaughter and a "regardless of your intentions your actions caused this" kinda thing.
the only reason i really cared is because she bragged about it afterward and about being the best multiple times, and never got the reality check she needed for her character arc.
