Can't believe it took me my 3rd binge watch to realize his "memorial stone" was at his childhood tree he used to play in, sure am glad he didn't get the hero sacrifice cliche
Right! it was through this analysis that I realized that as well.
Facts. The fact he lived was epic.
Well he instead is the fakeout death cliche
I wouldn't have been upset either way. But thinking about it more, he was never afraid of death and was borderline suicidal near the beginning of the series. So, for all of that development to be taken away with a death at the end would be sort of pointless.

The church excommunication of the Belmonts was not only a nice touch, it was realistic. Trevor's movement is something that I find amazing in this series. He flows like a river crashing down on his opponents. Even when they gain the upper hand he adapts quickly and changes tactics. It's thrilling to watch. And his sense of humor is actually a common trait of soliders who have have seen a lot of shit. I know this from experience. Trevor is not only well written but realistic and as grounded as a character can be in an Anime.

Some say they're cousins. A very strange case
Couple of things that came to my mind:
1. Despite Trevor being strong, in the power dynamics of the story he never felt particularly powerful and certainly not OP protagonist. In the protagonist trio Sypha has much more mobility, destructive power and versatility than him with her magic and the traits he has over her, physical strength, speed and and endurance are covered by Alucard. Only areas where he excels at are weapons expertise, martial arts and monster lore. Him finally soloing Death was him finally reaching that video game protagonist status.
2. Speaking of that, this series is based on game franchise that is 50% of the namesake of metroidvania subgenre. The most defining trait of that genre is the dynamic between the impassable objects and enemies and tools you find to overcome them. The cross+holy water combo blasting through the barrier and mysterious dagger being a tool to defeat primordial beings like Death are intentional nods to that kind of progression. In regular story they'd be awfully convenient but in Castlevania adaptation they're a reward for the protagonist's diligent exploration.
He didn’t use the cross and holy water. He used the Morningstar Whip to break the barrier after repeated strikes.
The Netflix series has been a great resurrection for the Castlevania franchise and a introduction for newcomes like me.
I'm really loving this character breakdown and i hope they're get more interesting characters in the continuation that is coming.
"He's so good in combat he comes off as a Gary Stu."
Yes. And we love him for that. But he's not a Gary Stu because it's EARNED. His whole family does ONE thing: Kill monsters. And that's what makes Trevor a good overpowered character and Rey a bad overpowered character: Trevor Belmont and the entire Belmont lineage EARNED it, Rey Palpatine did not.
And I would add that one of the reason's he's earned it is that he is the smartest fighter of the main trio. Alucard typically just overpowers opponents because he is the son of Dracula and a Dhampir with tons of magic skills, magic weapons, and inhuman strength & abilities. Sypha is demolishing people as the flipping avatar and is able to freeze, roast, or zap enemies and typically comes away with few injuries.
Trevor on the other hand is shown time and time again to hit way above his weight class due to his intelligence and pure skill. He knows that in order to win he'll balance a grazing hit to kill his opponent.
Also mind you he had incomplete training since his teenage years. And the fact he kept his skills for so many years since is impressive. I think that shows innate talent in physical combat and he has very good encyclopedic memory. Well… when he’s sober.
I hope we end up getting another era of Belmonts getting a show or season like imagine how they would recreate richter single handedly fucking over the Belmont lineage

what i love about trevor that he is a nice person a stoic drunk f--- but a lovable caring badass showing with priests and sypha and the village people
The vampire killer is the leather whip and the morning star is the chain whip
Great video. I would also like to add that Trevor is ambidextrous. He has his short sword on his right side of his hip, indicating he uses that weapon primarily in his left hand while he primarily uses his whip on his right.
This also explains why he could dual wield a bunch of complicated weapons, most notably the Vampire Killer AND the Morningstar.
This reinforces his physical prowess AND brain power/intellect.
I like to believe that Trevor realized that Death was going to be the final foe which is why they returned to Targoviste so that Trevor could gather the parts for the dagger to kill Death.
He had no idea the parts were there, he got lucky all three times he found parts. It’s honestly one of the weakest parts of the story that he just lucked his way to victory with it.
It’s not even really a necessary part of the story for him to get it.
Could’ve just kept it out and had the same effect.
@@acewmd. he couldn’t have gone without the knife, considering how powerful death is and that the knife was built to attempt to KILL GOD, he definitely needed it, and yes it was kinda lucky that he found all the pieces but it also isn’t unreasonable how and where he found them, the main knife was found in the scavenged armory of a group of vampires, the gem was found on a royal guard who was part of a group using magic artifacts to fight vampires and the third price was in a vault full of gold and innumerable artifacts including the legendary cross weapon
@@speauks_4667 the way he found them all is contrived and the dagger is entirely inessential to the story. They could have also just had him be so good he fought death to exhaustion or had San germain do something and it’d be better than the scavenger Mcguffin. It’s a very weak part of the story that only takes away from it.
@@acewmd. you’re also forgetting that all the parts we’re in the same area, Targoviste, which makes sense in a way since they’re above essentially the largest collection of holy artifacts in Europe, it makes sense that the dagger would be there, and it would be bad form narratively to leave death alive as a loose end
@@speauks_4667 if you need to write a reason for a thing to be required in the first place and then contrive a way for three separate parts to all be found then you probably shouldn’t use it in the story.
It’s a bit like checkovs gun except in this case you have to justify needing it to begin with.
He doesn’t need a super special suicide dagger when they could just write a normal clash and get the same result.
If I train you as a boxer and then I also give you a grenade to use your wonder why I bothered making you a fighter to begin with if I was just going to make it so you didn’t need it.
He is a weapons expert and was already kicking deaths bony butt he didn’t need the dagger and it really only serves as a stand in for a and then he hit it really hard moment.
I think one cool thing about Castlevania is because the story is based on historical moments that may or may not be true, due to word of mouth and loss of recorded knowledge. There's enough room to alter the unknown sequence of events to match and lead up to certain recorded moments that have been established giving the franchise a plethora of creative angles to explore! Netflix did a fantastic job of reinvigorating interest in the game and lore itself!😁
I imagine if two belmond were present? That be a nightmare for the monsters.
I agree on most of your points except for the Gary Stu comment. Trevor is shown to be as flawed as most characters and even bleeds from some minor fights such as the first fight he is in at the Inn. what makes a character a Mary Sue/Gary Stu is that they somehow are always stronger than the people they fight or somehow they unlock a convenient power when they need it and dominate an enemy that was beating them easily. 1 example of a Mary Sue is Rey Palpatine somehow being able to use force lightning despite it being mentioned that even the strongest of the Sith struggle to learn despite claiming to be a Jedi. she conveniently is able to use it right as Kylo Ren is flying at her yet she "gets angry enough" that it just happens. Trevor, as you stated is in his late 20s or even his early 30s, has trained for several years and struggles with some enemies like when he fought Alucard and if he had been a Gary Stu, he would have come out on top despite how strong Alucard is. I would be careful about labeling characters those terms or you'll have guys like me in the comments explaining why it doesn't make sense
I appreciate your input and agree with your focal point. I think a lot of listeners of this video who make the same comment as you do overlook the fact that I said that Trevor "is so skilled that he comes off LIKE a Gary Stu". Even went on to remind the audience that because of this, people may forget that he is trained and comes from a line of expert Vampire/Monster slayers. But maybe that part is probably hard to hear lol 🤔
@@KaizokuSleven ty for taking my comment in stride. I have seen when someone has a negative opinion when responding to comments and think of it as a personal attack. I think we also both overlooked the fact that the first fight Trevor is in is against normal humans who only have experience in a few bar fights or minor fights against others built like them which means Trevor, though intoxicated at the time, was doing his best to hold back for fear of either killing them or the church finding him and since it's mentioned later the Belmont family was excommunicated, what's to stop the church from trying to hunt him down and finish him off. while he does have training, previous members of the family trained for far longer which led to them being masters of their style of fighting

Yeaaaa man, especially with how he turned out after defeating Dracula in the beginning of the game. It's going to be interesting how they play with that story line
Trevor is definitely one of the top 5 Belmonts in the franchise. Partially considering that he was one of the 5 characters used for The Greatest Five dual crash from Portrait of Ruin. I personally liked his character development in the anime series.
Trevor is a grimdark fantasy protagonist. Many of them are similar in nature.
Agreed & they tend to be the best in the growth & development departments.

Netflix takes a lotta liberties with the story of Castlevania, but I think the result works shockingly well.
My only issue is how they're gonna make the story continue with the sequel, given that Dracula is effectively out of the picture.
Well technically, he came back to life along with Lisa at the end of season 4
Along with what Kaizoku said, Rondo of Blood starts because Shaft and his followers perform a resurrection of Dracula. So even with the way things end it could be Richter following the original story or another incredibly powerful force to fight.
Richter: "Die monster, you don't belong in this world."
Dracula: "It was not by hand that I am once again given *flesh.* I was called here by *humans* who wish to pay me *tribute.* "
Personally, I wish more of the show adapted Castlevania 3; like a a good amount was about Trevor and his friends traveling the lands to confront Dracula. That isn't to say it should have solely adapted the game. Spend about 2 seasons adapting the game and season 3 and/or 4 would be something new. And they completely shafted Grant.

Richter is the strongest Belmont. He killed Dracula, got so bored that he tried to revive Dracula so they can constant battle.... Just along the line his ass got brainwashed
That's why he's 1 of my favorites. Ever notice how the Belmonts who succeed in killing Dracula always get hit with a curse? Simon, Richter Trevor(not necessarily cursed but had to deal with Isaac who got cursed)

Definitely at the beginning Trevor was in not give a damn mode waiting the incoming impending doom. Then he found he the morning star whip you can see the care along side his stunning ability to shatter all odds change.
Loved the video lol, but, the treatment of the Belmonts varies greatly from the show and games, mainly because in the show the Belmonts were excommunicated while in the games the Belmonts were exiled due to their supernatural abilities (for example their Crash Attacks), and despite being exiled they still had a somewhat decent relationship with the church, which led to the Pope hiring Trevor to figure out what happened to Wallachia. The Vampire Killer never shows up in the show as it was replaced by the consecrated whip and the Morning Star, which are different to the Vampire Killer. A big tip to how the Belmonts didn’t have the Vampire Killer was that Trevor got his hands on Leon’s Longsword, which he gave up at the very beginning of Lament. As for Trevor’s age, well in the games anyways, he’s 20, with Alucard being either slightly older or slightly younger.
I didn’t really care much for the show, just hopefully Nocturne is better. Ellis isn’t writing for it so it’s got that going for it. I’ll give the show credit though, the animation was phenomenal, same with the voice acting and the original music from Trevor Morris.
As for my favorite Belmont. Trevor would be first, Juste would be second, Chris doesn’t get enough love.
That's really good to know, especially for someone like me who didn't play all the classic Castlevania games. I think Alucard is slightly younger since he pointed out that his body matures fast.
I'm not too familiar with Juste though here and there people talk about him being 1 of the most over powered Belmonts in the clans history. I gotta learn more about the lineage and play all the classic games.
@@KaizokuSleven He probably is slightly younger, since I’m basing it off of Hector and Isaac’s ages, since Hector is a year older than Trevor and Isaac is 2 years older than Trevor. Which another difference between the games and show was that Isaac and Hector in the show were recruited as adults, while Hector and Isaac sought out Dracula’s guidance when they were kids, they had Hector’s backstory somewhat mentioned in the show but they made it seem like he was the one who set the fire, while it was the animals he brought back who set the fire to act as a distraction for him so he could leave the village.
All the Belmonts have extremely powerful magic in their blood, before Sypha married in. Her being married in made the family stronger which was most evident in Juste who, when compared to other Belmonts, even Belmonts like Richter and Julius, I’d considered a prodigy in magic. The Belmont bloodline and just the Belmonts individually is rather interesting to learn about. Plus the Classic games are awesome, I’m partial to Dracula’s Curse myself.

The identity of the two whips is kinda confusing, but I'm pretty sure the Morning Star is the Vampire Killer, just under a different name (the name "Vampire Killer" is never actually used at any point to my knowledge, but the VK in the games is often depicted as a chain whip when it's in its most powerful form). The leather whip Trevor uses is just a consecrated whip.

That we know of, I’m sure there were Belmonts before him who learned magic that passed that knowledge down to him.
Original Richter is the son of Trevor and Zypha and he got his magic from her.
You might be confusing the show lore with the game canon.

Interesting. I was told the Belmonts before Sypha had to learn and practice magic conventionally, but after Sypha got involved, they got a boost in aptitude. I've never played the games but, this is what I've been told.
@@thalmoragent9344 Yes because Sypha is a witch so her aptitude for magic is natural in a sense. Unlike Mages who have to study the science of manipulating magic, like the previous Belmonts.

I don't know why hell skipping over simon and straight christopher, I mean trevor was first one fight dracula and his minions, simon was middle ground, and christopher was last one for longest so should go in that order to tell begining, middle and ending story!
It’s probably bc they wanted to get to symphony of the night soon bc of alucard, alucard isn’t in any of the other Belmont’s timeframe till richter then Julius. Tis a shame bc I wanted to see all belmonts get a season & Leon got fucked over & left with a cameo.

I could care less about juste belmont, but leon belmont should have got short series like 12 or 13 eps long, but now that changed things to where they little no connection between dracula and belmonts.
I don't know that work now story wise.
@@viewtifuljoe66 Given how the first Castlevania series ended, I don't actually foresee how Dracula could continue being the villain. The same goes for Death. They have to be doing something radically unique specific to this story.

It's a tie between Richter & Gabriel for me. I know Gabriel isn't really canon but Lords of Shadow did him justice.
Simon will always be my favorite Belmont of all time.
The man single handedly walked into Castlevania all by himself and took down all the minions of Count Dracula and then finally took down the Count himself.
He didn’t have the magic holy powers that his descendants would have, but he had the holy faith to empower his sub weapons and of course he had true mastery of the Vampire Killer Morning Star Whip and could easily swing it around easily without hitting himself with it, and could use it to swing around and traverse over huge gaps of pitfalls.
He then survived the curse out on him by Dracula after he slayed the count, and after dispelling Dracula’s Curse from his soul, he went on to start a family and had kids like a True Chad.

They gender swapped him if you paid attention. I wasn't pleased with that.
Series didn't need him, all he would have added was being the typical thief archetype. Think the writer put a bit of grant in Trevor as he did mention he was a burglar at one point.
@@xenxander wasnt really a genderswap, its more of an Original Character loosely based on Grant, After all, Danesti is a real place in Romania, so its fairly common to be taken as a surname, especially by nobility.

Yes but I don't believe it's a standalone weapon like shown in the show.

I really enjoyed Castlevania but they’ve kinda dragged the Trevor storyline on too long, I was really hoping they would just dedicate one season per Belmont and just go through the series like that.
