Your RPM gauge is most likely set to a 4-stroke, without "wasted spark". It's expecting 1 spark every 2 rotations, but because it's a 2-smoke (or 4-stroke with wasted spark), it will read double RPM figures. Not sure how it's reading operating time.
I have the same tach and even though there is a setting for 2 cylinder 2 stroke I found that I get accurate rpms when I have it set to single cylinder. I only have the wire wrapped around 1 plug wire
I had a similar issue, i had the gas line plugged in backwards.. I had the gas can plugged into the motor input and i just reversed it and it fired right up. Also you have to have the throttle half turned when starting...
@@a23b23 I didn’t rely to heavily on the manual, I made sure to watch actual reviews and unboxing videos on it I trust the people more than the manual lol
@BigTonysRipzz looking at your boat I think your problem is not the motor but the boat. Your boat has a totally flat bottom they will maximize drag. You need like a 30+ hp motor. I do not even think 25hp motor will make you that much faster. You can use duel motors if you have room! That is what I might be doing
@@johnjay6370 I’ve actually been looking at 50hp motors the last few days! Planning to get a console and a motor with some controls installed hopefully soon!
@@johnjay6370 I realized within the last week or two the 18hp just is not enough power, and also figured a 25hp wouldn’t be much better either so we will see what a 50 can do for me!
I’m thinking about buying one. Thank you.

Operating time is based on the devices internal clock as long as it is seeing spark it counts hrs if no spark pauses counting hours.
@@machew2009 Makes total sense. So this "wasted spark" or not, doesn't affect operating time values.
Nice Thanks for Sharing!!
I have the 18HP. great little motor for the price. I'm getting 26 mph with an 11 pitch prop on a 15' aluminum Jon Boat.

With your are loading up should get a lower pitch prop high pitch will slower your speed unless only one person seatings in the boat
as a two stroke, can you sense the smell when it idle or while you run?
Just bought the 12 horse I can't even get the thing started for the first time
I got the 12 HP back in May and I've been out 7 times and no complaints whatsoever, perfectly satisfied
Wish I would have had that kind of luck

@@johnjay6370 it's getting fuel to the motor I think it's either a really weak spark or the carburetor. Fingers crossed anyway
@user-wq1pl9tx7u also did you pump it up before starting
Did you had to put oil in the lower unit or it came already whit oil?
Yes! I absolutely had to fill the lower unit, there was a little oil in there but nowhere near enough!
@@BigTonysRipzz thanks
@@BigTonysRipzz i wonder i my manual don't say that....

They can hear it running in China.
where to you buy different size props for these motors. i have a 12 hp motor and i want a smaller pitch on the prop because of weight on the boart

Hopefully this helps! This is the one I just ordered lastnight

any decent boat prop shop can either repitch the one you have or make one for you
How long your boat?

that thing is gonna leave your ass stranded
@@ronalddavis I’ve been stranded by plenty of motors in my lifetime! These things happen (which is why I always have my trolling motor just in case)
In 5 or 6 years you will see it was not really a saving on a Yamaha.
@@wheelieking3976 well I didn’t have the money for one at this current time! No harm in trying this motor out
