Yeah I was hoping to see Bill with them. He was funny in the game...
At least he may be alive since the whole (80s song) playing at the end of episode one.
Also, at the end of 3, the window is open.
People may assume he escaped but he was safe in there, where would Bill be?
There's no reason for him page Joel, just to give Joel everything in that place, then to leave out a window.
Also Joel could have taken all those guns and put it in the truck...

I cried once every 15 minutes this entire episode. This is one of the most beautiful and emotionally powerful episodes of tv I’ve ever seen. This felt like a movie that I guarantee would be on every critic’s shortlist for best picture at the Oscars. Neil Druckman said in the BTS video after the episode that he and Craig Mazin had this philosophy on the show was “when should we deviate and when should we come back, if it’s kinda the same or worse then they stay (completely faithful to the game), if it’s better we deviate”. I’m SO DAMN HAPPY THEY DEVIATED! And I’m so happy that it ended with them dying together instead of Bill just forever living alone like in the game. Also I loved the Mortal Kombat 2 cameo. And of course Ellie’s favorite character would be Mileena.
Tragically yesterday Annie Wershing who played Tess in the game passed away at 45 due to cancer. So when they showed the flashback with Tess and Joel I cried. Rest In Peace Annie Wershing.❤❤

This episode hit hard, quite a bit harder than Sarah's death in the first. Bill and Frank living their life with love, be there for each other and then both ending it together when they're old and health is failing. It's a masterclass in adaptation. The whole thing is a catalyst for Joel with the same outcome. Neil said in the podcast that he always weighs in what you gain by changing a characters fate so completely, and they decided the gain was more than worth the deviation.

In the games, if you give Frank's suicide note to Bill, he crumples it up and throws it away. You can then pick that note up and it'll have a crumpled look to it.
I like how they switched it up so that Joel is the one who crumples up a note.
In the game, Bill serves as a cautionary tale to Joel about refusing to be open to love, being closed off, and by yourself. Sure, you'll live. But you'll be a lonely, hollow shell of a person.
Here, Bill's story serves as a reminder of all the lovely things love brings. And a reminder to Joel about what his purpose is, and unfortunately, how he's failed at that twice now.
Serves a similar purpose, in a different way.
    Loved this episode.

The more I've re-watched this episode, the more I've realised their situation even more. Frank's dying with an incurable disease, they live in an awful and dangerous world, they've grown old and spent a beautiful life in the past 16 or so years, it's probably getting harder and harder to keep up with the defenses and keep surviving in this world for them too, their lives are getting monotonous wake up, survive, sleep, etc. Now that they've gotten old and Frank's basically a liability too with his condition, they've probably reached a point where they're old, they're happy and satisfied, what's more to do? It's not the same world we live in. They're basically in stuck in this bubble for a couple of decades now. They can't retire and travel the world, explore new things, experience new things, etc, like an old couple would in our world. So, with all things considered, them doing a suicide pact was choice Frank made, eventually Bill, and it was such a bittersweet moment ❤ They won life's lottery in this world imho

Game fan here. I loved this so much more than Bill's chapter in the game. It is so incredibly amazing. In the game Bill alludes briefly to his relationship with Frank when he and Joel find Frank's body in another building and see that he has hanged himself. You never meet Frank. You never see their relationship. Having this instead, and getting to see this supremely beautiful love story is just so wonderful to experience. I loved it. I love that they got to live a full life together and go out together on their own terms. I especially loved the last day. The last meal being the same meal as the first and the marriage scene was amazing. The music playing throughout that entire day is flawless. And then when you realize that the world ended in 2003, twelve years before gay marriage became legal in the US, and you understand that they never got to live in a world where their marriage would have been recognized it is even more poignant. As a fan of the game, I love this episode. As a fan of great television, this is probably one of the top five best episodes of television I've ever watched. As a fan of a great love story, I have never seen a more touching, more profound, more immediately impactful on-screen love story than this one. What it was able to accomplish as a love story in the span of just 60 minutes is truly stunning.

This is the end of humanity. Each episode should be moments of happiness with a gloomy reality looming for the future. The game is one thing but honestly the whole story is about love. I think every episode is probably going to explore how there is both good and dark parts in both love and loss.
What I took away from this is that there is both beauty and sadness in everything. Even if you get your happily ever after with your soulmate and are one of the lucky ones to make it to old age, that fairytale still ends in disability and death. But that also means the possibility for so many beautiful experiences along the way. The goal isn’t to exist for as long as possible no matter what. The goal is to have meaning along the way. And Bill and Frank got to choose when they’d had enough on their own terms. When it was no longer possible to thrive and live and they were only surviving.

    • @Rockybear4444

And I just thought of something else: SPOILERS MAYBE?
In the game, Ellie expresses survivor’s guilt at one point so maybe she wasn’t worried about the mycelium network cause she was almost hoping for something to happen. She keeps surviving bad things while others don’t. She doesn’t have a purpose to keep outliving people. She doesn’t like Joel enough to want to go on for him and she doesn’t appear to have anyone else (as she told Tess in ep 2). I feel like first she was testing to see if the Infected felt pain to see if the person was still present behind there and I think she has a lot going on in her mind with Riley becoming one and whether there had been anything left of her underneath, with Tess sacrificing herself to them, and herself being bit but not infected and why her, and she sees it doesn’t respond to the pain, and it’s just all fungus underneath so she just wants to release all her rage out on the monsters who caused her so much pain but who the people she loved all became I guess? Just a theory. I probably read way too much in.

I was disappointed that we aren't going to see a Ellie and Bill interaction on screen but I'm not mad at the changes either. I thought this was a wonderful change and gift for both fans of the game and new fans coming into the show. This was just a beautiful love story in such a dark world a much happier ending to bill and franks story compared to the game but it still hit all the same notes for different reasons. MASSIVE game fan here. I absolutely did not mind this at all.
I loved this addition, loved what it had to say about love and it's beauty. Bill serves a similar purpose, thematically, here.
Sure, we lost some funny moments between Bill and Ellie, but we got this beautiful love story.
Druckmann said that his philosophy regarding the changes was: if something they come up with is as good as our worse than the game, don't change it. But if they come up with something better, something thematically meaningful (because TLoU is a game about love and all the beautiful, horrible things it brings. So if something related to this theme comes up that is solid... ) they'll change it. The bigger the deviation, the bigger the story reward should be.

Yes!!! The overarching theme of the game was human connection and human relationship. And how a relationship with someone can change you and that there’s still humanity/love/ beauty in an apocalypse. He built an impenetrable fortress, so the challenge of tuning a piano would be a “piece of cake” (anybody who knows how complicated and difficult it is to tune a piano can’t say it’s a piece of cake, but Bill is a maniac lie maverick lol)

Yes, this deviates from the game and yet, it delivers on the emotions, themes and we still continue onwards in the journey with Joel & Ellie, in a truck with their classic costumes. Also, Bill still leaves a mark on Joel while his arc goes on a different path. Love the spaceship reference. Best way to describe this version of Bill & Frank, is that it's a companion the o.g game. IMO, Frank deciding to "log off" (while still selfish) was for Bill's benefit in his POV. He probably felt like he was a liability, he can't run and his aiming would be awful bc of his illness (im guessing cancer). He wouldn't want Bill to potentially die trying to save him, sure the gates can protect them but for how much longer? Frank figured that if Bill was going to see him die, it would be better if it was after having one final good day and taking pills than a more gruesome death.
Like I said it's still partly selfish to ask Bill to aid him logging off (not sure if he would've done it if Bill said no, Frank had a way of doing what he wants lol), but given the circumstances I think it was the right call. I for sure don't envy either of them of having to make those final decisions.

In case no one else mentioned, Bill's part in journey is just through his town to get the truck (more specifically a battery but they end up with that same truck). They ultimately get the car at the end of this episode, and they tweak how the message of Bill's journey is presented to Joel. The game offers a much worse turn of events for Bill's story, and his character acts more as a bad omen of what Joel could become, rather than providing the hopeful message offered in the show. Like all the other changes, I appreciate them more with every watch, and it helps that it was all portrayed beautifully. And the way they weaved our main characters' stories in and kept the same overall message, it's perfect.

Very risky for them to so drastically change the Bill and Frank story but I loved it. Honestly I see the game and the movie as two branches of the same timeline. It's as if both game Bill and show Bill started their life the same but at one point diverged and so each version took different roads.
If I can take you back to the argument they had, I feel as if game Bill never acquiesced to Frank and refused to ever change or open up so it drives Frank away and we end up with the Bill in the game and obviously in the show it shows what could have happened to game Bill if he did drop his walls a bit.

Just from a narrative standpoint, Bill has one purpose: showing Joel that shutting yourself off isn't the way to go. In the show Bill serves that purpose differently than in the game, it's still the same message though. I mean Joel said "I'm like that, too" like twice about Bill, so the show clearly wants us to connect their life choices. Bill wrote the letter to show Joel that you can break out of this life by breaking some of your rules and become someone who lives a happy life.
So even if I do like Bill (in the game and in the show) I don't see any purpose in keeping him around, everything the main protagonists can learn from his character has been said. I also feel like Bill is 15-20 years older than in the game.
This show is about the beautiful and terrible kinds of love, this one was a story about the most beautiful thing love can do, so let's keep it that way.

It still serves the same narrative purpose but in a different way that is more in line with the TV format than a video game structure. With the game, Joel starts to warm to Ellie mainly out of a subtle fear of becoming uncaring and distant like Bill had become with the loss of Frank and his love for him. The TV show, shows how that very love gave Bill purpose and meaning, to the point where Bill & Frank were content to live and die together through thick and thin. My only issue with this change is that we will never get the interactions between Bill and Ellie.
Ashley Johnson's Ellie was feisty as hell and this part of the game were some of my favorite scenes with her.
The change really didn't change much in regards to Joel and Ellie. They still got the supplies they needed and Joel receives the information needed for his character to grow.
With that said I can see why people are upset with the episode. Especially people who haven't played the game. Joel and Ellie could have showed up, found the note, and left without us ever seeing the Bill and Frank storyline. It does fill like filler but it was very well done.

As a gamer. I cried.. this was absolutely beautiful. Yes it deviated. But it also felt true to the core of who Bill. While adding this whole other side that we never got to see.

That being said. Now in even more excited, but also scared of what they will do with other characters that we will meet on the way. Because if this shit makes me cry... I cant Imagine how other certain other story lines will just absolutely crush me

As a fan of both games, I really enjoyed these changes. Bill did what he was put in the game to do. To kinda break through to Joel that men like them can change or should change for the better.

The actor who plays Frank to Nick Offerman's Bill is Murray Bartlett, who also played the resort manager in White Lotus Season 1 and I have been a fan since then. Both of them were phenomenal. This arc IMO gave soul to this story, which until now seemed like a plot for just another adaptation of the video game.

Also, please finish White Lotus when you get the chance and if you like, I'd even recommend making a reaction video series to it. I watched Season 1 after I heard the madness around Season 2, and it totally hooked me in.

The episode is about the main theme of The Last of Us. Surviving vs Living.
Bill taught Frank how to survive, and Frank taught Bill how to live.
The only difference between the game and the movie happens during that argument in the street. In the game Bill says absolutely not, Frank starts resenting him because he’s an extrovert. Eventually Frank leaves, gets bitten, hangs himself to not turn. And leaves an angry letter to Bill, to which Bill swallows his tears and feelings and goes, “Well then fuck you too”. Bill will die bitter and angry having never lived at all.
In the show Bill compromised a bit, and let Frank love him how he wanted to love him. Let him make a friend, Tess and Joel. Spruce up the neighborhood. Frank in turn compromised and settled for just that. It’s still an apocalypse, he can’t invite too many people or do too much. So they both died satisfied, in each other’s arms, after a full life.
In either case their plot purpose is to teach Joel that surviving isn’t enough. In the game Bill shows Joel how bad and purposeless his life can be if he doesn’t open up. In the show Bill shows Joel how good it can be if he opens up.
Joel reads the letter and realizes that Frank died happy. And Tess died never having that chance. So he starts opening up a bit.
Both Bill and Franks are sides of the same coin. The bad ending. And the good ending.

Achara's jump at the very end, when the passenger mirror moved... my wife jumped even more than that! Apparently, if a mirror moves you're supposed to see something scary in the reflection. 🤣

I think it is funny how much weight everyone puts on the part that bill has to play in the game.
Bill in the game is basically a small side character that tells you were to go and helps you a little along the way.
Bill in the game could have been left out entirely and it would not have had any real big impact in the overall story.
The only thing that made Bill of the game a fun character was the banter between him and Ellie
This Bill in the series to me feels so much better then the bill in the game.

They took two characters, one that you didn't even talk to and another you played with for 2 hours max. To flesh out these two characters. They did it SO well 🤌🏾

This may sound strange ,But I always thought that it was bill (or his ghost/ spirit or something) opening the back door there when Joel checked Bill's room. Like the symbol /representation that Bill finally leave from life.
