As heartbreaking as this episode was, the fact Bill actually wrote down, "Hehehehehe" in his suicide note is hilarious and so in-character.
I was sobbing and when that part came up, I died laughing. I looked crazy 😂😂
That made me laugh so much. Haven't had such a change from sadness to laughter since the Joker.
And the fact that Ellie read it verbatim was *chefs kiss*
Ellie is become a clown of this show.
That was a great way to help after all the sadness
It's so strange how yeah, it's a very sad episode, but Bill and Frank got probably the best ending possible for anyone in an apocalypse. Grew old together, lived comfortably, and went out together peacefully.
Exactly! And they weren’t infected they went out on their own terms 😭
Agreed. I felt so sad at the end of the episode but then I thought about it. Who else in this game gets to live to old age together safely like this? NO ONE. Bill and Frank had it better than all of them. And they deserved it.
its like the first 5 min of the movie up
100% its a tearjerker because its such a fucking beautiful story
Arguably they lived better in the post apocalyptic world then in our world today. They didn’t have anyone who could judge them and the could be fulling themselves.
The whole time I was watching, all I could think of is how can people hate someone just because of who they love. I’m bawling again lmao and I’m gonna leave at that.
You know how video games often have Good Endings and Bad Endings? I feel like this episode was Bill's Good Ending.
Omg, true. I love this thought. It's canon now.
Whenever I play the game now, I’m gonna feel robbed when I get to Bill
@@just_harry1638you and me both
@@Rick-vs4se huh? how would this make any sense in a video game lol. the entire game is from joel or ellies pov. so how would they show bills backstory and how would it make for fun gameplay? The reason they didnt do it in the game is because they didnt have enough time or freedom to show these things. thats why its explored more in the show. edit: they deleted their comment, stop replying to this as if you knew what they said

LMAOO sad rotation
@@degov5 Reminded me of that Seinfeld episode when Elaine is crying and takes a tissue, then hands one to Jerry and he's not crying so he just uses it to wipe his mouth.
Chris passing not crying and passing on the tissue like Jerry Seinfeld cracked me up
"I would've still shot him." "We know you would, Rana."
"I would've watched him shower." "We know you would, Rana."
I was 100% with her in this and last episode too.
This episode made me feel TRULY seen. I'm a Kansan country boy. I hunt, fish, ride four wheelers, wrestle hogs. I also happen to be a gay man. It's nice to finally see characters that represent men like myself, and not some tired stereotype.
There’s a slight morbidity to watching all of my favorite reaction channels crying through this episode but damn this was masterful
... dude, same.
It's kind of fun sharing stuff like this, even vicariously.
Me too
Samesies. Shared catharsis.
I've basically watched it 10 times at this point, and I still cry at Franks list of request and the following montage every time
i literally dont know whats wrong with me i cry every single time and I've watched it like 5 times😭
While I miss Ellie and Bill's interactions, I wouldn't change anything about this episode. They managed to retain Bills personality while also putting a different spin on him (he's still paranoid, kinda crazy and very happy for his gadgets), and I'm incredibly amazed at how they still managed to use Bill to further motivate Joel. Contrary to the game, where Bill is more an example of a loner that pushes anyone away, which shows Joel what he does not want to be, the series uses Bill to point out the significance of finding purpose through another person. Two very different methods of motivating, but the outcome is still very much the same for the story. Oh, and the performances and storytelling in this episode are top tier and definitely calls for nominations.
In both incarnations Bill is a foil to Joel. In the games, he exhibits all Joel’s worst characteristics taken to an extreme. In the show, he sort of shows what kind of person Joel can aspire to be and what hope he can aspire to have (in particular, hope for a family) despite all he has lost.
Hard agree, they did an excellent job maintaining Bill's purpose in Joel's story even while shifting his trajectory the way they did. Awesome take.
Could've done without the gay sex scene. Absolutely no need for it besides to shove it down your throat. I'm good on seeing 2 old dudes sticking their tongues down each other's throats. Also the tess, Joel dinner scene seemed too out of character. Not a bad episode though. Really enjoyed Bills introduction up until frank showed up
@@jarredbrooks2697 interesting, I did not find the dinner scene out of character, especially considering it was 10 years before current smuggler Joel and Tess.
Regarding the sex scene, I agree with you in regards to sex scenes in general. I do recognize that sometimes it actually does propel the story and character development, but often I consider it more than I need to see. But for me, I just look away. I don't count it against the show as it didn't last long or was tasteless in my opinion.
I would have liked to see this show do an interpretation of the original curmudgeonly loner game version of Bill and the not at all romantic cautionary tale he represents, but I cant really complain too much, they had a story they wanted to tell and executed it impressively. They faked game players out with the time jump where they're fighting lol
OMG ON THE SECOND WATCH I JUST REALIZED WHEN HE FIRST TELLS BILL " THIS IS MY STREET TOO, SO *LET ME LOVE IT THE WAY I WANT TO* " TIEING BACK TO THEIR LAST SCENES. I CANT. I NEED A MINUTE.
Bill’s cry-chuckle at 19:55 is the absolute purest and sweetest thing, it feels so genuine
yea it shows how fucking god tier nick is at acting. hes def getting awards
I loved how shy Offerman was when asked his name. It was like, omg, the cute boy noticed me! So sweet, as was his giggle in the scene with the strawberries.

I love the subversion they did with Frank and Bill. Bill in the game is a bitter and lonely person, you see in him what Joel could potentially become if he continues to deny himself from loving and being loved. Bill is what Joel should avoid becoming by opening himself to loving Ellie.
Bill in the show is the complete opposite. Bill is what Joel could potentially become if he allowed himself to love and be loved. Bill becomes what Joel should aspire to be.
It still uses Bill's character to tell the audience and Joel the same message, it just does it in the completely opposite way. Yet it works. Flawlessly. Brilliant subversion done right.
love this perspective with all my heart
I still think they shud of gone closer with the game... imagine seeing what Bill became and then how devastated and broken and bitter he becomes after the loss.... it would then show what Joel could become either way and why there's so much at stake for him. it would be for his own salinity and life. healed and then broken again.... like in the first episode when they talk about dependency and love being the same
@@vkdeen7570 I think it may have come across as too cruel if they did it that way. I think it's better this way, after thinking about it more.
@@vkdeen7570 **SPOILERS**
Maybe this is the "feel good" episode because after this section in the game is where shit goes down *real quick*
@@vkdeen7570 I don't know. It would've just felt like a complete undoing of the entire reversal they did on Bill's character. Bill and Francis ended up hating each other in the game. Why change so much of their background just to have them end up exactly as they did as the game? If you're gonna change something, you should commit to it.
Nick Offerman's performance here is **fucking incredible**
The scene at the piano had my jaw dropping -- A man who has never really been vulnerable and who, just based on the political circles he would travel, has probably been hiding who he is for his entire life is suddenly faced with someone who can truly see him and is placed in a position of true vulnerability, and it all reads on his face. There's this amazingly clear picture of fear and apprehension and cathartic relief in that moment. Really amazing imo.
This week, we saw good people. Next week's episode, we see the bad people.
Oh right, their car getting ambushed is up next right? Been quite a while since I've played the game so I have problems remembering the exact sequence of events, but yeah the first encounter with hostile humans should be up next, and they'll also meet those two brothers probably right?
@@snapgab Yes. Basically, slavers, rapists, cannibals, pedo religious cults, and people like us--you know, the ones who have a similar situation like Joel and Ellie, will be up in the next few episodes. A very cool detail I think it’s their seats at the table. In their first encounter they are on opposite sides, as it’s normal for two strangers. In the end they’re side by side, but only Bill changed his seat as to show how Frank changed completely his life, while he remained the same even with his condition. Truly one of the most beautiful episodes I’ve ever seen in any series
Lovely observation! It's also wonderful because it's Bill putting Frank at the head of his table, while Bill sits to his side, serves and 'mires. What a thing. The actor that played Frank was magnificent in this.
RIP Annie Wersching. You will be missed. Annie Wersching voiced Tess in "The Last of Us" video game. She passed away of cancer yesterday at 45. You may know her for her roles in "24", "Bosch", "Runaways", "Timeless" and "The Vampire Diaries".
Also, the beautiful score that plays when Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) get married is called "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter. It was also famously used in the movies "Shutter Island" (2010), "Disconnect" (2012) and "Arrival" (2016).
hope they showed her the whole series before she passed
great song!
Too young. May she rest in the peace.
I was wondering where the score was from!!! I knew I heard it somewhere lol
Nooo thats so sad:( hopefully her family were with her and she's at rest, I remember her character from the vampire diaries.
Max Richter also did the score from the Leftovers.
24:48 Rana nudging out of frustration that he's not crying lol 😂
We also learned that Joel and Tess had known each other for well over 13 years. A loss that hits hard. He has had about as much time with her as he has with his daughter.
What broke me was therefore when Joel said "stay here" when he read "keep Tess save". The crack in his voice was hard.
"This is super cute and intimate and under someone's grandma's quilt.. the way it should be"🤣🤣🤣
when marketta started crying as she saw bill being all closed up, tight and uncomfortable to their first physical interaction, cause she got what it meant, not only cause of the apocalypse and being alone, but being alone, that way, in this real day to day world. oh, thats why we love her ♥

Sometimes special things happen in television... "The Red Wedding", "Ozymandias", "Long Long Time" is one of those moments.
We will remember this episode.
What is "Ozymandias" from? I am assuming it is also the name of a TV show episode and not the poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Though I am curious why the episode is called that. Because if I remember correctly, since it has been awhile since I read the poem, it was about a king who had a statue made of him to create a sort of legacy and for people to remember him, but now all the is left is this plaque at the base of the statue. Not only is the king no longer remembered but the statue is destroyed and has fallen so even the legacy he tried to make doesn't exist anymore.
@@katiewright3309 one of the last episodes of Breaking Bad! It’s brilliant, and the poem absolutely ties into the themes of the episode!
And Andor. There're so many memorable and chilling scenes in Andor.
I have never been so invested in a gay romance until now, but I feel strangely satisfied with a slight depressing sadness in my heart. I love what they done with Bill and Frank!
It was just a touching love story that transcends orientation. Everyone can understand what they went through and the joy they had. This is representation done right. I'm straight but I felt their love and felt the sadness/happiness at their end.
hopefully since they expanded so much here they give Left Behind the justice it deserves and more
you should watch moonlight, it's a beautiful movie
AYO PAUSE HOMIE
That's why representation is important. It helps to dissipate homophobia to some people, when the reality shows how gay are full humans and with emotions and love. I'm not saying this is your case, but it helps people to understand better.
it was so beautiful, Bill knew how to survive and Frank show him how to live, so wonderful played
Joel building that cairn, at the start. In some cultures, it was used to mark a burial mound.
He was paying his respects to Tess.
Little did he know, it would be for both representations of the character.
RIP Annie.
I think Frank and Bill had genuine attraction for each other.
Frank for one is very friendly and genuine to Bill, complimenting in all his hard work and even surprising etiquette and how cultured he is, Bill himself sees someone who finally appreciates not the things he has, but what he himself has done, all of his effort.
And then the piano scene, with Bill playing and singing, showing his most vulnerable side to this total stranger, and it's obvious he is a man who was so invested in protecting himself, he never was able to let somebody get close enough to love them, maybe he was an introverted, maybe because he knew he was gay and he knew it would put him at risk to find someone... to love him.
And so it all culminates with Bill and Frank going to bed where we see that Bill never actually even got intimate with someone, at this point for who knows how many decades, he is shy, he is inexperienced, he doesn't even know where to put his hands!
and yeah, Frank says he staying because he isn't whore, but I read it more as "I know the idea of this being something more might scare you, it's easier to think about this like sex for shelter, food and a friend, so lets keep it at that until we are ready to call it something else''.
Bill and Frank, lived the most peaceful, loving and healthy relationship of all the others in the apocalypse , and most importantly, they got to choose when to leave this sad and broken world, together in each others arms.
I, too, cried like a bitch. Masterful episode
Bitches are strong and to be respected. Bitches are smart and get things done.
“On The Nature of Daylight” by Max Richter is one of my favourite pieces of music. I first heard it in Arrival and I cried hearing it in this episode

I love how well done this show is. They got Joel dealing with loss in EVERY episode....his daughter, his girlfriend, and his friends. Feel like it's preparing him to accept the loss of his daughter & to be able to care for another one.
Dire circumstances prevented Joel from fully grasping Tess’ sacrifice in episode 2. Bill’s letter allowed him to finally grieve for her.

What I liked about the third episode is that we didn’t get to see much of Frank in Part One because we all know that he took his own life since he didn’t want to become one of the infected and I’m glad to see that the series has given us the exploration on the character. When Joel and Ellie entered the house, and the breeze closed the front door, it felt to me like the spirits of Bill and Frank had left the house because they knew Joel had arrived safely. Absolutely loved your reaction. :)
The acting in this episode was unreal. So many beautiful little moments. Offerman pushing back his hair during their first dinner and then repeating the plate turn gesture at their last dinner, Pascal’s cold-hearted manipulation when he said, “last you the rest of your life…lives,” and Murray Bartlett’s realization as soon as Bill downed the glass of wine. Just top-notch storytelling and wonderful work by all the actors, the director, and especially the editor!
This episode is like, idk, extremely meaningful to me even though I’m a younger gay man, and I don’t really have the exact words to describe why?
I got to watch two older men fall in love and go out on their own terms. I literally cannot even imagine living past 30 because of a combination of just general depression and the environment I live in.
I still don’t know if I’ll ever actually live long enough to get old. But god, does watching this make me want it.
Go for it man, I'm rooting for you. I don't want this to be one of those "i was depressed" type comments (because I still am lol, it's just better now), but things do have a chance to get better, you can make them better, and one day maybe, you won't even realize, but you will see yourself smiling a little more, realizing you are little stronger, that you enjoy someone else's company a little more, and that hopefully keeps you going enough for all those things to continue stacking up.
Gay teenager here and felt same
If they can make it in the apocalypse, you can make it now. I believe in you, don’t give up
bill and frank surviving together could have made for a good movie on its own tbh
Also how he was saying call Joel, he will take care of you that Bill said when he thought he was dying at the raid. I loved how subtle the immense amount of respect Bill had for him. I mean Bill didn't have many to chose from as far as friends but he lucked out to meet Joel who gave him sound technical advice.
Another thing that I didn’t notice until later was that Bill made the same exact dish that he made Frank when they first met on their last night together…. Beautiful episode
Also when Joel showered he was wearing Frank's button down from when he was arguing with Bill about property maintenance
They better get Emmy’s for this. Masterpiece

Their story in the show makes Joel realise he wants what the have. It gives him a similar hope that Tess had...and he begins to soften towards Ellie.
Why does Bill's pure joy at his first taste of a strawberry in forever...don't remember exactly how long, but definitely under ten years and over seven...make me cry so hard?
Bill & Frank an epic Love Story we didn't know we needed. Thank you Naughty Dog & HBO.❣
I love how Tess says "Save who you can save" and the next episode, we hear Bill saying he saved Frank.
I would go as far as saying this was one of my all time TV episodes of any show. It was perfect.
Bill's line of "We have a job to do, and God help any MFers who stand in our way" feels like a very positive, empowering message about keeping the ones we love safe from harm (and in many cases it IS positive, like how Bill protected Frank). But I think by the end of the series, there's a much darker interpretation of the line we will see play out. Very much in line with story's main theme of how love is both wonderful and terrible, beautiful and horrific.
Wasn’t expecting this for Bill & Frank story but loved every bit of it.
Incredible performances. Watching this was a real gut punch, but also a beautiful experience.
A+ reaction to a beautiful episode. They gave Bill & Frank the story they deserved. This episode was written by Craig Mazin & was his brainchild. I loved how the letter galvanized Joel. That, and the shower he took 'cleansed' him, and was reborn afterwards. Masterful.
This felt like a movie that I guarantee would be on every critic’s shortlist for best picture at the Oscars. I cried once every 15 minutes this entire episode. It’s honestly one of the most beautiful and emotionally powerful episodes of tv I’ve ever seen. Neil Druckman said in the BTS video after the episode that he and Craig Mazin had this philosophy on the show was “when should we deviate and when should we come back, if it’s kinda the same or worse then they stay (completely faithful to the game), if it’s better we deviate”. I’m SO DAMN HAPPY THEY DEVIATED! And I’m so happy that it ended with them dying together instead of Bill just forever bitter and living alone like in the game. Also I loved the Mortal Kombat 2 cameo. And of course Ellie’s favorite character would be Mileena.

The thing Joel was building at the start of the episode is called a Cairn. For Tess I assume.
Literally blubbered my way through the whole episode, and once I managed to tear my eyes away from the screen, I turned to my husband (who never cries) and saw him literally heaving sobs, which made me cry even harder lol! A masterpiece of an episode.
RIP, Annie Wersching, This was a remarkable and heartfelt episode. Mortal Kombat II turns 30 this year; damn, I'm old. 12 Monkeys is a dope movie and tv series.
I lov that Maketa just cried the entire episode as we should
My wife said the same thing. This was Up. She also said "Now in every The Walking Dead episode where they find a couple or family where its implied they had a suicide pact, imagine they were all like this.
feels like that last shot with the window is an easter egg for the main menu in the game
Bill lived in Lincoln, Ma, it's one of the wealthiest suburbs of Boston, it's where Paul Peirce lived, not exactly the boondocks.
Source: grew up in the town next to Lincoln.
The fact that they were able to convey so much character development and emotion in one episode of Bill and Franks arc is amazing. What really hit it for me was Max Ritchers song being played in the background. Fuckin hit hard
I feel bad for people who want a paint-by-numbers, beat for beat remake of the game.
This episode reminded me of some of the best episodes of Lindelof shows!
I don’t mind changes, there are a lot in TWD compared to the comics, but this episode was definitely way off for me.. glad we saw more of frank, but I didn’t expect Bill to be dead too cause I loved the interaction between him and Ellie, the car, the school part.. a bit of a waste in my opinion
@@Vale9118 I do love the Bill and Ellie bickering, but what we got here give the characters much more depth.
This episode took almost nothing from the game, and yet felt like the most "Last of Us" feeling episode yet to me. Simply incredible
@@travisspazz1624 Yeah, and at least here Bill was happy and he made it work with his partner. And it's such a huge story to be told on TV, it was beautiful. I cried like a baby.
We found the best ratio of changed content: 10-25%
I'm just here to cry with you guys all over again. When Frank first showed up I was jokingly thinking he and Bill would make a cute couple...never could I imagine that not only were they a supremely adorable couple but they also ended up crushing my soul too. So happy they got their own happily ever after during the apocalypse. I love Nick Offerman so much and Murray Bartlett is amazing too.
This was one of the most beautiful episode I've watched in television history. For one episode, their relationship really hit me and moved me to tears. Just the sheer love between them, the ups and downs of their relationship, and got old together, and died in their own terms, happy, fulfilled, satisfied... oh man 😭
this episode absolutely broke me 😭💔 but such a peaceful ending for bill & frank
Mickey crying is too heartbreaking
as heavy as this was, you were very right about them having it better than most in an apocalypse. beyond that though, they had a longer and happier life than many queer people even in the modern world. i haven't played the game, but i read a summary of their story in the game, and i'm very glad they decided to change it and give us a depiction less toxic/tragic than we're normal given in media. it meant a lot to me tbh
This episode feels almost like a message of hope to the queer community. Ever since the aids epidemic, there has been this underlying thought that we won't get this old domestic life which is enforced by a lot of media. But this? Showing two middle-aged gay men growing old together, living a truly happy and fulfilling life despite the state of the world around them? Showing how their love for each other would live on, eternally sleeping in each other's arms as the breeze blows in? This masterpiece of an episode tells us that that's a kind of love we not only deserve but is perfectly within our reach.
@Mick oof yep that's it 🥲
Regarding Bill and Frank's last day, the background music used is "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter, an awesome composer whose work has been used for many years now, in series and movies. He did the soundtrack for the serie "The Leftovers". His songs were also used for the movie "Arrival".
But regarding "On the Nature of Daylight", it was used for the end credits of "Shutter Island" by Scorcese, my favourite movie, in a slightly different version (which I find even more poignant and saddening) combining both this music and Dinah Washington's "This Bitter Earth", which I intensely recommend.
Coming back to this scene, it was a bitch move from the maker of this episode to use this song, as I completely lost it and cried my heart out.
Magnificient episode.
Bill taught Frank how to survive, Frank taught Bill how to live.
Unfortunately, Rana would not have been able to watch Frank shower because as she noted, she would have apparently shot him beforehand once he got out of the hole 😂😂😂
Another person said they were expecting Sarah, but not this episode, and that's why it hit so much harder. I have to say that I definitely agree.
Expecting Sarah?
What we were expecting was a falling out, but the twist was a gut punch. Bawled my eyes out, but at the end of the day Bill and Frank won in this life
Sarah?
Who tf is Sarah?
@@Quzga People who knew the game were expecting the sarah dying bit in the show. But they were not expecting this change in this episode and that's why it hits harder.
Emmy awards just for this Episode even...❤great adaptation and directing...great commentary from you all too!!
This was 1000% better than the game. Like you guys said, this section is very gameplay heavy. The people that are complaining aren't taking into consideration that they aren't making this show for only the gamers, they are making it for everybody. A 75 minute episode of shooting infected wouldn't have been nearly as impactful as an episode about 2 isolated people longing for human connection. The whole crew knocked this out of the park.
It has been such a long time since i cried from a show or movie, and I'm so glad that this was the show to break that streak.
If there is no budget for making some action scenes, then i guess yeah.
@@spbspb2413 bro, its a story driven survival show, not big fart 65 with Keanu reeves and dwayne Johnson
@@spacedout4061 There are other ways in between the 2 extremes
Masterclass in story telling. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett deserve awards for their performances. Great reactions as always guys I too cried. Yes I agree what they did here for Bill's storyline was better than what they did in the game.
Bill and Frank had a beautiful love story and honestly they probably had the happiest ending in TLOU. They lived a long and satisfying life with one another. So many people I'm TLOU would wish they had this life.
Seeing Nick Offerman cry across from Murray Bartlett was already too much and then moments later they come in with the double cheatcode of sadness and play "On the Nature of Daylight" and I lost it.
Great video. I really enjoyed your reactions and take on the episode. I especially loved watching the reaction of the lady in the middle. She seemed to be deeply affected by the story right from the piano scene. And she seemed to be in shock afterwards. I wanted to jump into the video and give her a big hug. I felt all your emotions were so heartfelt and genuine. The episode got me good too ❤
I sob every time I watch this episode with a reaction video. Ahhh, such love is truly divine. Truly.
Rana got that ENERGY! The odds are absolutely in her favor come the apocalypse.
