Technically he did that at the end in Jackson already, especially when Ellie cam back for him and he was holding her hand, which pretty much solidified it. Kinda why I hate people calling the last episode a filler. It showed why Ellie would not leave Joel, and why she has this fear of ending up alone. A backstory about the main character is everything but a filler.

From a filmmaking standpoint, the reason for focusing on Ellie's face rather than the violence itself is because the emotional impact of the violence on her is what is important in the scene. Putting the camera on the knife entering the body repeatedly would be gratuitous and purely for shock value. Violence and gore just for the sake of it "because it's HBO" would be both lazy filmmaking and less effective. It was the right choice from the director.

The acting was amazing here. Props to everyone. I thought the casting for David was phenomenal. One thing that just cant be matched was Nolan Norths VA in the original. Something about that whispery tone always freaked the shit out of me. But even so this guy was an amazing David. Great villain turn. I think when we watch this back one day and have to compare David to say...Kathleen...it will just make him look even better.

  • @edenstar80
    @edenstar80 Рік тому +118

You never saw the brutality of David’s death in the game either…. The fire scene was almost identical. In both mediums… David’s not the focus there. I always felt like the focus in that scene is Ellie’s collective sense of fear & rage & grief & anguish & loneliness & will to just survive; coming to the fore and she let it out in that moment.
Orphan. Fedra. Riley. Marlene. Tess. Sam. Henry. Joel. She doesn’t even know if Joel’s still alive at this point. “I’m scared of ending up alone”. The poor girl has been through it and then some.

If you go back to the Kansas City episode, I made a comment on another site about the parallels to the French Revolution: after killing the royals/aristocrats/nobles, there was a subsequent purge and the survivors were pretty much the wily people who knew how to game the factions. David is a wily survivor who managed to find sheep to ensure his own survival and his aberrant behavior would not be challenged by his followers. Joel/Ellie have been established as independent, never fitting in with a culture or a group or even each other until episode 7. It took this traumatic experience to bring them together even closer but we'll see how Ellie copes with the aftermath. Joel hasn't been doing too well after his daughter's death and that was decades ago.

Any innocence she still had was destroyed by what David did and attempted to do to her and by the fact that he forced her to hack him to death to avoid it. That guy was a monster.
Joel's a weapon. The way he took out the men left behind to search for him, despite being wounded and nowhere near fully fit, was epic and that interrogation scene.... well, let's just say he wasn't messing around. I totally expected that Joel would burst in at the last minute to save Ellie, but I'm so glad they actually had Ellie save herself. She went beast mode. She's a true survivor. She is Joel's daughter.

Now that they've bonded and looked out for each other like loving family members, Joel would rather die than lose Ellie. And I don't blame him. Not after he had to watch Sarah pass away in excruciating pain in front of him. What that does to a loving parent is, for the most part, beyond devastation. I originally had the same thought about Ellie trying to cover her tracks when leaving the first meeting with David and Buddyboi, but I think it probably wouldn't have been feasible. When she originally happened across them, she was running through the forest to chase the wounded deer.
To cover those tracks, she'd have to backtrack along that same path, covering not just her own footprints, but also the deer's, as well as any blood trail it left. Then there's any branches it would've broken along the way in its panicked flight.
It's not an impossible thing to try, but she was also under a heavy time crunch to get the medicine back to Joel.

We finally got Daddy Joel officially back, but it was sad what happened with Elle had to go down to get him there. I actually chuckled a little when Achara said "break his fingers, do something" when David was creeping on Elle at the cage. Happy that his got a big helping of karma later on. This episode hit me in the heart at the end after everything that happened. Enjoyed the reaction. 👍👍✌ out

This episode was incredible, Scott Shepherd was terrifying and creepy as hell as David and honestly his performance matched Nolan North for me, Bella gives probably their best performance of the entire show and with Ellie’s terror at David assaulting her was palpable and truly traumatising, seeing Troy as James was so cool and the fact that the show included him at all is amazing but of course Pedro is as awesome as ever as Joel and his brutality was on full display in this episode which matches perfectly to the game

Smart Achara.. Penicillin does come from mold, and while it's labeled as a synthetic drug now and has been for quite some time, that's only because instead of removing it from naturally growing penicillin mold they now grow the mold themselves and then separate it.. which technically means it's synthesized and thus listed as a synthetic drug... But yea, its created by mold, and mold is a fungus.. so as I said, very smart Achara (I'm not calling myself smart in a round about way, Ive just spent the last fifteen years or more of my career in pharmaceuticals, so it's an area I'm familiar with is all).

There is no episode that felt like filler every moment in this series so far had a purpose to the overall story I far on another note I have noticed especially in this series Jaby getting more emotional than I am use from him especially strange since he has experience with the game for me it makes it worst if I know what is coming.

I was wondering how dark they were gonna make the *DARKEST* part of the game. And yeah, they did not hold back. They made David in his last minutes even more disturbing than the game made him. And when David tells Ellie that she has a violent heart he had NOOOO idea. I would honestly put her near the top of the list of the deadliest people in tv or video games. But that scene of Joel hugging Ellie and calling her baby girl still hits hard.
Also I kinda wished that Troy Baker was cast as someone far more important than James. Still he was amazing and he had an awesome death scene, and it was darkly funny that video game Joel was killed by tv Ellie. Also wish that they gave Ellie her trademark bow and arrow, but hopefully we get that in Part 2.

  • @saintwolfie9108

Talking about the violence in 27:40, I've noticed that we only see the violent stuff when we are with Joel, like in episode 1 when he kills the soldier in front of Ellie but then in episode 4 we are behind the wall with Ellie when Joel kills that kid in Kansas, same in episode 5 when Joel kills the snipper we don't see him shoot, we cut to Ellie, Henry and Sam hidding behind the car. We don't actually see Sam or Henry die too, we have cut scenes to Ellie's reaction and Sam's body in the ground and the blood running.
With all that in mind, I think not seen David's body at all once Ellie knocks him it's very consistent. She's blinded by fear and anger in that moment, I don't think she is even properly watching what she's doing, she just keep swinging over and over out of pure adrenaline.

Joel killed the girl's dad (Alex, I think they called him - likely the bat-wielding attacker at the uni in ep6) - and David had the body served up to his flock in that eating scene (or he's one of the bodies 'prepped' that Joel comes across (hence the excuse not to bury the body earlier in the episode) - that's my understanding anyway. Great episode - can't believe this season's nearly over already...
