It’s the attention to detail that made this episode so great. The plating of the food. The song on the piano. The strawberries. The never showing the bodies in the bedroom. @@bobloblaw7465 Hm, so I'm of two minds on this. On the one hand, you're right that this is narrative filler to the main narrative of Ellie and Joel, but I'd consider it narrative filler in the same way as the intro episode was filler. It informs and contextualises the world of The Last of Us, and the characters within in it, while also telling an effective and emotionally evocative story.
So yes, it's filler, but most of a story is filler when you can just read a synopsis online if all you care about is knowing what happens. What matters more - at least to me - is whether the story is interesting, engaging and evocative, not whether something immediately and completely serves the central plot.

I've said for years that shows like Walking Dead and The Last of Us are not so much about surviving the zombies or whatever ended the world, and is more about how humans truly interact with each other when it truly matters. And to take that premise in a story that is supposed to be focused on Joel and Ellie and make an episode like this NOT focused on them was a stroke of pure brilliance!!!
