It’s the attention to detail that made this episode so great. The plating of the food. The song on the piano. The strawberries. The never showing the bodies in the bedroom. The letter to Joel with that line about Tess that finally broke Joel’s defences. I was prepared for this episode, but in the end these little things got me.
You forgot the tissues Ellie hoarded after Tess made her use magazines to do her business. 😊
When they showed the window at the end I was literally saying "don't show the bodies. don't show the bodies. don't show the bodies". Was afraid they'd make a bad move and they did not. Masterpiece stuff.
They never showed the bodies because they were humping when they died lol lol lol that was what the "unpleasant sight" referred to, not just that they were dead.

The plating of the food, the way he poured the wine... the little hair flip as he sat down. It's the little details that you don't even realize you notice that make you forget your watching a show and feel like these are real people.
Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett definitely deserve recognition to this due to their performance of the storytelling, but the writers also deserve recognition for it. They created the story of course.

Nick Offerman killed his role in The Last of Us. We knew him from just Parks and Rec, as Ron Swanson, I had no idea he was capable that acting range. He reminds me a lot of Byran Cranston. From a comedy show to a absolute beast of a drama actor. Nick is on another level now.

They say great comedic actors can often give outstanding performances in dramatic roles. Another example would be Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems. (Unpopular opinion, but I also liked him in Reign Over Me)
Genuinely had me ugly crying for five minutes, such an incredible episode of TV.

I don't know anything about the video game - is this a big part of the game, and is it true to the story?
Nick and Murray absolutely OWNED that episode. The script was nothing short of a masterpiece. The level of detail that went into the staging of each scene was genius. And the cinematography and music were perfect. If this episode doesn't win awards, I don't know what's wrong with people...

The cast and crew have done so damn good so far. They’ve put so much care and detail into this series
Big part of that is because the head writer of the whole first season was the director of the game. He's critical. I really hope he's back for season 2.

@@billywashere6965 Yes Straley's not involved, but you should read about Druckmann's contributions and the awards he got. He was also integral. And since he worked closely with Straley and knows him, he can use that experience in conveying his vision.
Straley not being there doesn't seem to be a problem. That's 3 banger episodes in a row.

Dude the scene when Nick is crying towards the end on the couch and he has the frown is just crushing.
It was truly amazing at how his awkwardness towards relationships and opening up on screen transferred out to me while watching. It was palpable towards the beginning of the show and then as the show went on I honestly forgot about it. Some of the best acting, writing, and visuals I’ve ever seen on a single episode of a show! I CAN NOT WAIT to see what else they have in store for us in the rest of the season!?!
I had the same reaction and in the end I was like wow it wasn’t just my emotions but it was me feeling theirs. It was unreal!

Thank you HBO for being brave enough and giving this episode a chance! It was brilliant! From the story line to the outstanding performance, I watched with my friends and we all cried! It showed so much love and respect for another person, selfless and genuine caring for each other! In a world that is crazy and falling apart, with death and despair everywhere, love, compassion and fate worked its magic and it was AMAZING! Thank you Megan for encouraging your husband to do this episode! I was blown away, never expected this episode from a video game. Well done!

The game is brilliant. There are actually a ton of fantastic stories in today's games, they just need the right person to adapt them. Having the director of the game working on the show means the broad strokes of the story are all the same. I'm so glad that non-gamers are getting to experience this story, because it's stellar.
@@seansean8008 brave because it was a departure from both the main storyline and the game that was focused mostly on two unknown "side" characters. A lot of times that can be greeted with mixed reviews from fans. They took a chance and it paid off brilliantly.
The way they went out at the end was such an existential crisis inducing, yet beautiful moment. I didn’t think I’d ever end up teary eyed over this show. You are a national treasure Nick!

One of the most moving episodes of TV I’ve seen since the series finale of Six Feet Under. Such a touching story about two people that genuinely love and care for each other.
For me it was the most moving episode after Jurassic Bark from Futurama

I have been crying about this beautiful beautiful love story for 5 days non stop. I can't pick up myself from the emotion and somehow I feel I don't really want to because such a great thing to watch their relationship growing. Those two gorgeous men show me what true love is even in the end of the world. Thank you Bill and Frank. Thank you Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett.

I just watched the episode and I cried so much. Such a moving episode. Bill and Frank will forever have a place in my heart. Nick Offerman always surprises me because I always seem to forget what a powerhouse he is.

This episode was nothing short of masterful. The writers, directors, producers, the actors, the set designs. Every single detail about this episode played together to make tl watching it so deeply emotional it had me ugly crying for 10 minutes after the credits rolled. We know Nick Offerman as a stoic man and craftsman (a man's man, with the facial hair to prove it 😂) his performance in this episode show the depths of his range so beautifully. They're absolutely right, even if you don't want to watch the show as a whole, this is a must-see episode.
Episode 3 had the best love story i've seen in years, and they managed to give it to us in an episode of an horror TV show. Shows how much the writers want it to be more than just a game adaptation.
EDIT:I have a suspicion that you have not played the video game.
They are doing a very good job of adapting it, in the case of Episode 3 ____edit___ incredible (not egregious, because I've discovered that in English it has bad connotation)_____edit____, but the narrative source material of the game is already very good and at times excellent in itself.

My husband played the games, probably one of his favorite games and i watched him play because I loved the story line. He loved this episode as well. We are both just blown away by the show so far especially this episode.

"These people must be on the coasts", lol. Nick Offerman is a national treasure. I've never seen him do anything but comedy but he *nailed it.* I don't usually get emotional watching fiction and I don't like romance but episode 3 had me feeling their love and pain. It was a diversion from the main story but really captured the spirit of *surviving versus living* in a fungal post-apocalypse. He deserves an award for that performance and Murray was so damn charismatic

If you only saw him doing comedy, i strongly recommend you check him out in the series Devs. He plays a head of a San Fransisco tech company in a pretty special way, with serious drama and some humor, but critically a real human factor in a convincing way. I think one of his main strengths as an actor is bringing the humanity to his characters in a way that hits home. Became a fan for the Ron Swanson gold (pun intended) and Movember activism (when i participated in that 10 years back), stayed a fan for the seriously underestimated acting skills and depth of someone known mostly as a meme character.

@@k.l9468 my brother text me this: 'I'm halfway through ep 3 and I think it's gonna be one of the greatest TV shows ever'. When he finished he text me 'maybe one of the best TV episodes I've ever seen'. He's not on social media so he's not being influenced by the amazing hype this show has. A lot of other people I know have had similarly grand reactions.
I think it deserves the high praise, but I also think the fact that it was almost like a feature movie within a TV show lends itself to why people were so blown away. It was spanning like 20 years and took aprox 45 mins of screen time cus they paced the time jumps really really well. It was pretty amazing

I just finished the episode and had to come here to watch interviews of Murray and Nick to ground myself and stop crying. It is the greatest love story I’ve seen probably since The Notebook and surpasses it.
I bought a bottle of Lagavulin 11yo Scotch Whisky, Nick Offerman Edition, a couple weeks ago. Then 2 nights ago I started watching this episode and when I saw him I cracked open the bottle and poured a glass. Both the episode and the whisky were fantastic!
I never knew it till this episode, but the role of Bill felt like it was made for Nick Offerman. Terrific job.
Totally, I replayed the game and during the cut scenes I just picture Nick

It was him crying on the couch coming to grips with saying goodbye to his soulmate that hit me like a truck. I couldn’t hold it back.
My wife and I are still just......stunned. What an extraordinary, magical, beautiful example of story-telling. TLOU recognizes that, for all the high-concept of the premise, truly riveting story-telling is in the relationships, and in our need for human connection. Nick Offerman is a stunningly gifted actor.
Please give this man an Emmy. I cried from his performance. So touching and so not what I expected.

they do have an Emmy for it, "Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series." Nick will be nominated opposite Murray, but Nick will win. Murray is great as Frank, but it's really Bill's story arc--he is the one whose character goes through the biggest transformation. Add to that the fact that he played a legendary character for 7 seasons on Parks and Rec but never won, he's a shoo-in for the win.

I signed up for a fun show about zombies! Literally me. I didn’t cry in ep5 but I sure as hell did with this one. The scene where they got married by the piano was the one that got me to shed a tear or two.
This episode kinda reminds me of The Green Mile - it’s so well done, very emotional, damn near impossible to get through without crying, and you kinda never wanna see it again because it just wrings you out emotionally like a sponge.
Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett gave a tour de force performance. If either of them got an Emmy for guest actor in a drama series, I’d be supremely happy.
Nick Offerman absolutely deserves an Emmy for his performance in that episode. From the way he laughed when he tasted those strawberries to the way he cried while holding Frank's hand...

I swear I thought this dude was Gary Sinise as soon as he came on my screen in The Last of Us. He could easily be Sinise's son. He looks just him.

Nick is a national treasure, I've loved him in everything, but he hit a new level in The Last of Us!! He brought out every emotion in me and goddammit he just nailed it.
There is no way this doesn't win awards next year. Such a great show and in particular, such a powerful episode this interview revolves around.
As many other people in this comment section, I'm sure we all love Nick Offerman, one of the reasons I personally adore him, is the way he talks about his wife

Best episode of ANY show I've ever seen in my life. I don't think I've ever felt so much for 2 fictional characters ever and they were only in one episode. Absolutely BRILLIANT performances and writing. I only really knew of Nick Offerman as Ron Swanson, what an incredible surprise.
Nick's performance was AMAZING and it was one of the best TV moments EVER! My whole family, three generations, was watching it and having the most intense emotional response to the episode and the actors' (especially Nick's) performances.

Last Of Us and its sequel - all fav time games. The show is doing justice - the small details - like the workbench in the 3rd episode, the clickers, one person climbing up to open the door for the others - Amazing.

Bill & Frank’s possible love was only hinted at in the game, and Nick and Murray brought it to life, it was truly beautiful and heartbreaking to watch 😭😭😭

On the one hand, you're right that this is narrative filler to the main narrative of Ellie and Joel, but I'd consider it narrative filler in the same way as the intro episode was filler. It informs and contextualises the world of The Last of Us, and the characters within in it, while also telling an effective and emotionally evocative story.
So yes, it's filler, but most of a story is filler when you can just read a synopsis online if all you care about is knowing what happens. What matters more - at least to me - is whether the story is interesting, engaging and evocative, not whether something immediately and completely serves the central plot.
One of the best episodes of television ever. Would absolutely love to see Nick in more post apocalyptic style forms of media
I've said for years that shows like Walking Dead and The Last of Us are not so much about surviving the zombies or whatever ended the world, and is more about how humans truly interact with each other when it truly matters. And to take that premise in a story that is supposed to be focused on Joel and Ellie and make an episode like this NOT focused on them was a stroke of pure brilliance!!!
This episode was something! The letter reading and adding “Hehehehehehe” in the Offerman laugh was a great plug!
An incredible couple for television history. Powerful human experience, we all shared. The way Murray’s Frank disarmed the literal and emotional guard Bill had built was so charming and beautiful. Still stunned by what they captured. Thank you.
I have never cried as much at a piece of film/media than I did during his episode. Cormac McCarthy’s book The Road came close at times but this really did it for me. And I live in the Midwest for what it’s worth.
I sobbed watching this show so far. With the first episode, I knew what was going to happen but ON GOD!!! I wasn't expecting episode three. Great job to everyone involved!
Nick deserves all of the awards for this episode. Absolutely incredible performance with such a beautiful story. Get your tissues ready if you haven’t seen it yet.

That episode floored me... I wasn't expecting such a sweet, perfectly expressed love story in the middle of a zombie apocalypse! Everyone I know cried a little.

i love how they portrayed Bill and Frank’s story much different than the game. i love the shows ending instead. the episode was so beautiful and i cried my eyes out. 😢
